The sushi was really good but our service lacked. Our table was sticky, I wasn't asked if I wanted a refill at all. From my understanding, working in food industry for many years, the customer shouldn't have to ask for a refill, but the server should be on top of the customers drinks. If a customer has to ask, they're not paying attention. My miso soup was less than half way full. My husband said that's because they probably use a ladle and that size ladle is all you get. He was a chef for many years. He says if the head chef thinks they're giving too much soup out and is getting at them about portion sizes, that could be why I got so little, still it was rather disappointing. It was also not very warm. My salmon skin roll was amazing, and the other roll I got, I forgot to take a picture, but it was called the lollipop roll and it was gigantic and delicious. Like almost too big. It was wrapped in cucumber instead of seaweed. The other two rolls were good also. The green tea ice cream was really good. I guess they make it in house. Beware they put chocolate syrup on it tho! So if you don't want it, ask! I don't like it with my green tea ice cream, I feel like it drowns out the flavor of the matcha. Over all, the food was pretty great, the service definitely needed some improvement. I know people can have their off days. Our server wasn't by any means rude or neglectful, just not attentive at all. Didn't ask if we needed anything extra, we found ourselves needing to ask more than we should have had to. read more

We ordered three rolls and a teriyaki chicken plate: Spider roll Salmon skin roll ....and the third might have been a house roll _The spider roll had a cool presentation _The salmon roll was SUPER TASTY _The 3rd roll, whose name alludes me, tasted light and fresh. Now, the chicken teriyaki is where my 5th star was taken away. My plate was practically fajitas. But, we found all of the rolls lacked in flavor and quality of ingredients in comparison to our favorite spot in Tempe. Cleanliness also says a lot at a restaurant. But, the windows, doors, and rug were dirty. Not a great first impression. Elbow grease needed to get this place spic-and-span. I came here with a group of 7 coworkers for lunch on a Friday right when they opened at 11:30. There was no hint of the smell of fish like some sushi restaurants in the Phoenix area. The interior is clean and decorated nicely. The friendly host immediately jumped to action to move things around and combine two tables to make room for us to sit together. We were given a small bowl of Miso soup, which was a lovely gesture, one which many sushi restaurants are now charging for as an option. I ordered a Las Vegas roll and a spicy yellowtail roll. The Vegas roll was good, but not the best I've had. The yellowtail was fresh and delicious. I tried a bite of one coworker's Dynamite roll, which is a california roll topped with baked scallops and crab mix. It was delicious, creamy and satisfying. I have now been consistently eating at Makitto for over 2 years and they still have yet to disappoint. The salmon is best in town and we loved to it on the shiso leaf appetizer instead of spicy tuna as well as on simple nigiri or sashimi. The spicy scallop hand roll is another simple delight that I highly recommend if you're a fan of scallops/hand rolls, and as always the so sexy roll is still one of my favorite sushi rolls of all time. Food aside, the service here is incredible and personable. Edson is our favorite waiter but you really cannot go wrong with anyone because they're all so wonderful. The ambiance is great as always and since the reopening there are even dividers between some tables to allow for a bit more privacy. All in all, we've tried many sushi places across the valley but Makitto is the one that we always come back to and we can hardly wait for more. read more

Wow! This place is a hidden gem. When I say hidden I'm mean literally. I drove by it 3 times before I found it. Their happy hour is superb. Just when you can't think of a good place to go for happy hour. I hit the jackpot. I haven't had everything on the menu but their sashimi yellow tail and tuna is fantastic. Hellz yeah. I was a big fan of J's Sushi in the beginning, and then J's Kaiyo after the split, so I was stoked to hear that Jay opened another place after that closed down. Our group of four headed over here on a Saturday night around 7:30 and were happy to find that we could be seated immediately. Though I hope this was an odd occasion, because I would really hate to see this place close down. Some of the freshest sushi I have had in the state, without a doubt. I had the layback roll and the geisha roll, as well as some agedashi tofu to start. The agedashi tofu here is my favorite of any AZ restaurant; the thin batter is perfect and crispy, and is so good with the tempura sauce. The layback roll is a little outside of your standard roll, in that it's wrapped in rice paper rather than sticky rice (the past few restaurants had options similar to this as well). It was so delicious! The tuna poke on top was seasoned perfectly, and so fresh. The real crab inside made all the difference, and paired perfectly with the seaweed salad and ginger garlic sauce. Definitely recommend this roll. The geisha roll consisted of real crab, shrimp tempura, avocado, and tuna. Topped with a tasty yuzu sauce, all of the flavors went perfectly together. Again, the real crab made the difference! Definitely do not skimp and go with the surimi crab options--real crab is super hard to find in sushi in AZ!! The dude had a couple of the sashimi specials, and said they were both excellent. We also shared the lemon cucumber soju, which we both liked a lot. A bit steep on the price, but it came on ice with a ton of soju! Our friends had a couple rolls as well--I can't remember which, but it was one of the special rolls and then a few basic ones (spicy tuna, avocado, etc.) and they said they were all fantastic. Pro tip: DEFINITELY get the fresh wasabi (off menu). It's a $3 upcharge, but so so different from the normal wasabi paste you get at other sushi places, and is an absolute game changer. This coming from someone who doesn't even normally like wasabi. My one complaint: the price tag. It's very good, and very fresh. But still. I get it, we're in a landlocked state and I'm sure it's super difficult to get fresh fish at a reasonable rate, but it's still definitely an expensive meal, especially for west Mesa. It's the only thing stopping us from becoming regulars. read more

I selfishly don't want to write this review as it's still a relatively hidden gem. Alas, I need to let people know about how great this place is to ensure the sushi keeps flowing. Jay, formerly of Sushi J and J's Kaiso Sushi in Old Town has resurfaced at Makitto. Since Jay left Sushi J and J's Kaiso, they have both gone to crap. Jay is likely the most talented sushi chef in AZ. The fish he gets is always the best and there is probably nowhere in town I can get better sushi. The scallops are out of this world. Good luck trying to take them down in one bite. I always sit at the sushi bar and order omakase. It's not cheap, but neither is good fish. I like to order a special roll that Jay makes up with rice paper. The rice paper is slightly gummy and gives the roll an awesome texture. Basically everything is amazing and I go here as frequently as I can. Jay is an awesome guy and his crew always provides great service. Parking is extremely easy as it's by the movie theater in Mesa Riverview. If you're OK with the price, I highly recommend getting omakase here. Date night and decided to try this place before the movies. It's a small establishment with a sushi bar and a few tables...but the atmosphere is clean and to the point. There is happy hour. I think it's Sun-Thu? But it's a basic and small menu. They also have special sushi that's written on the board in the restaurant. Pretty pricey but I'd like to try that another time. I decided to try the Seafood Poki $15.50. Delicious but not a huge portion for the price but the quality is pretty good. It was fresh and tasted good tho. Miso soup was $1.99 and was also good. He ordered spicy salmon rolls which were yummy! The salmon was not grinded up like in mist places but were in small chunks so I appreciated that and the taste was great! I was $7.25 i think for the spicy salmon and it came in 8 good sized pieces and not too much rice! Overall... I had a great experience with this place. A bit pricey but quality is good! We absolutely love this place! We've been coming here since they've opened. We actually heard of Jay when he worked at Sushi J and ended up following him to Makitto! Before COVID we used to come monthly, now with COVID it's been a bit more sporadic. His fish selection is always fresh and we love everything on the menu. Every time we come we try to get something new and off his specials board. This time we ordered sea urchin, yellowtail toro sashimi, salmon sashimi, stuffed jalapeño, fire dragon roll, spider roll and miso soup. My new favorite roll is the spider roll (soft shell crab). If you're open to bursts of flavors, my other favorites are the crunch bay, dragon roll and lobster roll. This place is a must go! If you have a refined sushi palate, come here. One of the best sushi places in AZ by far! So happy to have found Makitto. Chef overnights the highest quality fish from California & Japan and takes the best care of each dish that he puts out. Fish was such great quality, amazing color/taste great portions. Chef also had great recommendations last time when while we were sitting at the counter, including aji (which he says he only gets 2 at a time and made the most AMAZING special plate of it so we can try the bones as well). AMAZING! My wife and I were looking for an AYCE Sushi place, and ended up here after reading some not so great reviews of Mido. They don't offer All You Can Eat here, but GO! They have "Happy Days" instead of Happy Hour, with great specials on Sunday-Thursday(see Menu). The sushi was phenomenal, not to mention the miso soup, gyoza, and mochi ice cream! Our favorite roll had to be the Tootzzy Roll, with a very close second being the Geisha. The Las Vegas Roll is my favorite preparation I've ever had. In the Tootzzy and Geisha, the shrimp and tuna were on par (or honestly even better) with some of the best quality fish I've ever had - and that's coming from a Southern California native who just moved to the valley a few months ago! Needless to say, we found our new Sushi spot. Between the manager regularly checking in on us and giving us 5 star service, to the quality preparation, and creativity of the sushi - we'll definitely be back for more! Also, the chef even modified a roll or two to our liking - like preparing the Marilyn Monroll as a traditional roll, and offering to add cream cheese to another, or even preparing a regular roll as spicy. It was a genuinely pleasant experience. Didn't even take a picture of the sushi because we were too busy enjoying it... But here's one of the mochi ice cream!! I've followed Jay, the owner and head sushi chef, for years simply because his sushi is excellent. His new establishment, Makitto, is small but comfortable, and it pains me little to make the drive across town knowing that his sushi is the destination. He's very particular about the fish he orders (i.e., making sure that certain species come from specific regions) and is happy to make recommendations or create something special for you if you feel like trying something new and different. Their customer service has been excellent, even in these early days, as the staff has always been genuinely friendly and very attentive. On the weekends, I'd recommend arriving as early as possible as they're likely to fill up quickly although I doubt a wait would be very long (as others have noted, its located right next to the Cinemark 16 movie theater, so it's a great place for date night!). Makitto is quaint, clean, comfortable, and the kind of place that one goes to when the priority is really great sushi. I could make no greater recommendation - I just cannot think of any sushi restaurant in the Valley where the quality and presentation compares. Highly recommended! read more
