tl;dr the food is not worth the trek to this French coffeeshop; the prices are high for bland baked goods and petite, inconsistently-executed sandwiches When the French-born Daniel Matho moved to America to pursue his passion for cooking, he admitted to missing the simple yet solid sandwiches of France. Four years ago, in the midst of the pandemic, he aimed to address that unfilled niche through his humble takeout window, Maison Matho. This French-leaning coffee shop specializes in French breakfast fare and baked goods, and plenty of Angelenos are braving the bumper-to-bumper Melrose traffic to try them. Matho set up shop in the street-side room of a multipurpose complex sandwiched between apartment buildings. Colorful abstract murals are painted directly onto the salmon-toned walls, and the wide, raised ordering window is shaded by a black awning. To the left, a dedicated dining space is set up within the gated, canopied patio. The hum of a ventilator unit blends with the buzz of street traffic. The sandwiches each featured Matho's crisp house baguette. However, the simplicity wasn't met with consistency. I preferred the Bresaola Sandwich, loaded with plentiful parchment-thin slices of meat. The best bites incorporated salty-and-savory bresaola with zesty lemon and crunchy whole pistachios; however, just as many bites were devoid of one or multiple key ingredients, ending up falling flat. Meanwhile, the Jambon Buerre (a classic Parisian ham-and-butter sandwich) felt relatively tame and one-dimensional; only the few bites with the tart sliced cornichons were anything more than standard. Lastly, the signature Pink Praline Brioche Bun was mostly forgettable. The dry, sweetened bread was only slightly enhanced by a thin glaze and scattered sweet-and-crunchy pralines. The service has always been prompt, and my order pick-up has been a breeze on both occasions. Unfortunately, the portion sizes feel modest for the premium price -- a single "half" sandwich is just too small for a satisfying lunch, but still runs near $15. Ultimately, with inconsistent execution even across a single sandwich, I don't anticipate paying Matho a future visit.
Located on Melrose and Kingsley, Maison Matho is on a very busy section near the 101 freeway entrance on Normandie. Is there parking? Street parking can be a bit tough I think. I did see some folks pull up and pick up their orders so I believe ordering ahead for pick up is an option. Fortunately for me, Matho is just two blocks from my childhood home, so during a visit to my parents, following our late lunch I was struck with an urge for a good latte and some fresh air. "Let's walk to Maison Matho" What did I order? The Pink Praline Latte is a 5/5 stars in flavor. Sooo good, it crossed my mind to order a second one, even before I got halfway through the one in my hand. Service with a smile :-) The folks here are so nice. We arrived just 30 minutes before closing. They noticed we were enjoying the street side bench seating while sipping our lattes and allowed us to sit a bit longer past the closing. In comparison to other coffee shops pricing is def a bit on the high side but in my opinion, what they deliver on flavor and quality definitely makes up for it. On this visit I didn't try their food but will definitely be returning and looking forward to reviewing one of the savory offerings very soon
I would consider this place a stand, not a restaurant but nonetheless it was really good. Really chill vibe. Parking can be an issue but we got lucky and found a spot across the street. French themed with different pastries and sandwiches available. Coffee options available as well. Price was on the higher side for lunch but we also ordered the most expensive items from the menu. I had to try the omelette with trout roe and the pink praline late. Once we ordered at the window we found a spot under the shaded patio area they have right next to the stand. There are like 3 little round tables. Once our order was ready, they brought it to us. I really enjoyed the omelette. It was placed in a baguette, so it was technically a sandwich. The eggs were soft and the trout roe added a touch of saltiness. The coffee was equally tasty, not too sweet.
Fulfilling my own promise and coming back for their sandwiches! Not to miss the opportunity, we tried both the Jambon Beurre and Daniel's Favorite which was basically the Jambon one but with prosciutto instead of ham. Both were soooo good just like what everyone's been shouting, and it's indeed the butter which became their secret sauce! It's impressive how the simple meat, butter, cornichons combo could turn out that tasty. If we had to choose one, our pick was the prosciutto one just because it's more salty so it balanced the butter well. We pre-ordered to be secure that we're not spending long time waiting but the time we arrived on Sunday noon it's not like insanely busy. We waited a bit for the seat at the side patio, and could quickly get one. And ofc, we didn't skip their almond croissant!
Although I probably wont be back, as $22 per sandwich is a little steep for me, overall the food was really good. Parking is limited but my husband and I found a spot not terribly far and walked up to the super cute and clean window. We ordered the Omelette Sandwich and Daniel's Favorite. The Omelette Sandwich had a tad muted flavor and was dry, but was overall tasty; I just about destroyed the roof of my mouth with the bread. The eggs were really light and perfectly cooked though. My husbands sandwich was better, it had butter on it which greatly helped the dry factor and the salty prosciutto was perfection. Portions were okay for the price point. It came out in a reasonable amount of time considering it's made to order.
I don't really care for baguettes or sándwiches with a lot of meat- this has both and I'm surprisingly obsessed. The flavors were so good/ different than what I'm used to. Service was fast and friendly and they have a seating area partially outside on the left.
Drove by on my way home from the city and found no line and easy parking. Grabbed a jambon buerre and Daniel's favorite before hitting the traffic-laden freeway. I really adore simplicity and that's exactly what the jambon is. A great baguette, lots of flavorful French butter, shaved jambon and some cornichons. I do wish there was more cornichons to help offset the butter and ham, but that's a small quibble. It's a sandwich and a darned good one. I found the Daniel's Favorite with prosciutto too rich and salty for my liking. It was good, but I'm more a fan of less is more in this case.
My sandwich was great. Everything I expected. I am a huge baguette fan and this one I will be back for.
Been wanting to go to Maison Matho for the longest! I had the Pink Praline Latte Hot and it was amazing! I would come back for this alone. Also got Ham n Cheese croissant. The exterior was amazing with cheesy crunchy edges and buttery layers but the ham was a lil in dryer side. Overall 5/5, staff was so nice. Will try one of the signature baguette sandwiches next time. Located down Melrose, you will find a small stand tucked off to the side. Don't blink or you might miss it--I almost did. Once you find it, though, you'll be glad you did. The menu is distinctly French, featuring fun specialty drinks and thoughtfully crafted dishes. My friend and I ordered the Omelette with Trout Roe specialty sandwich ($27) and split half of the classic Jambon Beurre ($12 half / $23 full). I was very tempted to add a pastry, but I'm glad I didn't--this was more than enough food for two. Both sandwiches were delicious and served on their incredible house-made baguette. Honestly, I could eat the baguette alone and be happy. The omelette sandwich was quite messy, so grab plenty of napkins. The French omelette itself was perfectly cooked--light, fluffy, with a soft center. I might have preferred a roe with a bit more pop, but the trout roe worked fine. The Jambon Beurre was everything you would expect from this French classic: a thick slab of salty butter, a generous amount of ham, and tangy cornichons to finish it off. Next time, I may ask for extra cornichons. There is a small patio area with tables, plus a couple along the sidewalk. That said, the sandwiches hold up well for takeaway. Since everything appears to be made to order, expect a bit of a wait. All in all, the sandwiches were excellent, and I will definitely be back to try more of the menu.
An interesting spot with a small menu but lots of personality! While I was around Hollywood, I stopped by here for a quick lunch. I got the Daniel's favorite sandwich (Prosciutto di parma, butter & cornichons on their own baguette) and it was so delicious and very unique. The sandwich is also a very good size and the baguette is yummy as well. The service is relatively fast from the window and most of the seating is outside. There isn't much, but I got lucky and landed a seat when some folks left.

Got the Jambon Buerre sandwich from Maison Matho. The baguette was delicious and I will give them credit! The cornichons were a necessity and the butter was good butter and all that is a good thing but the Jambon, what should be the star, was underwhelming to say the least. A good Jambon should be delicate and nearly melt on the tongue, silky in texture, and subtle in taste. This one was dry and "subtle tasting" would be generous to say. Had to doctor it up w a bunch of maldon and pepper. Oh well! read more
Probably rank it somewhere between 4 and 5 stars so let's round up to a 5. Got 2 sandwiches, the jambon (ham) and the Daniel Special (with prosciutto) with the latter a little saltier and richer. But both sandwiches lay on an almost perfect baguette lathered with rich butter. Every ingredient seems to be of top quality that creates a delicious sandwich. Absolutely the best breakfast I've had in California!! Everything on the menu is crafted for perfection, definitely get an egg dish, a pastry and coffee. The americano definitely hit the spot. OMG best Sunday ever! Can't wait to try the rest of the menu. read more
A small little French bakery spot located in what I want to say is the East Hollywood area. They have a pretty simple and straightforward menu with not too many items but they do specialize in some French baked goods as well as French style sandwiches. It should be noted that they have some sides and salads as well as well as a pretty good selection of breakfast beverages. The folks here are very friendly and I want to say they are legit French if my ear for accents is anything. There's a window that you walk up to and order and you wait for your food after. There's some seating on the side and a few benches out front to sit, but this place feels more conducive for takeout. I ordered the jambon beurre and it was such a tasty sandwich. The baguette is firm and has a great bite to it and the French butter is so creamy. The ham was of high quality and also very tasty. There are some pickles on top to give it a little bit of acid. They really do this French staple really well. I ordered the pink praline latte as well and it was such a great and tasty coffee drink. The street where it's located is kind of busy so parking could get a little hectic, but I was able to find parking along one of the side streets in the residential area. read more

A hole in the wall with awesome pastries. Layers and layers in the Chocolatine and the croissant. The Tomato Croissant is delicious. Cortado is great! Iced Latte tasted strong and not "watered" down by milk. There's a bit of a wait. No indoor seating. some outdoor seating available. read more

You can get some of the tastiest sandwiches from a French take out window in Melrose Hill, called Maison Matho. Ambiance is very chill. I loved their baguettes, which are baked in-house daily. I ordered the Jambone, Omelette, Daniel's favorite, & Braesaola. each so unique & made with high quality fillings. The fennel and pistachios in the braesola were a delightful twist of flavors. The omelette was creamy, silky and tasty. The jambon was my favorite, the thick butter and pickles were fabulous. Daniel's favorite had a delicate balance of savory and slightly salty notes. If you're in the mood for a combination of rich, creamy, tangy, and crunchy elements then Maison Matho is your place. read more

Prices a bit steep. Flavors work great together but my jaw hurts from 3 bites in. Bread is super chewy and rubbery and I ate it within 15 minutes of buying it. Maybe toasting it before the sandwich is assembled? Not sure what would help but if it wasnt for the bread texture, it would be the perfect summer sandwich with simple and delicious ingredients. read more

We went early on in the day to get our sandwiches, so the line wasn't super long and the wait wasn't long for the food as well. We got the Daniel's favorite and we really enjoyed the sandwich! There was a little too much butter in the sandwich, but the combination of flavors was delicious. They have a few tables as well so if you're lucky, you will find some seating near by! read more

Maison Matho has that tucked away, cozy neighborhood feel that makes you feel like you've stumbled on a local secret. It's small and almost easy to miss. They have a little seating area to enjoy your food. The real star here is the baguette: perfectly crisp on the outside and wonderfully fluffy inside. Honestly, I don't think you can go wrong with anything on the menu, but the fluffy omelette sandwich really hit the spot for me. Tip: ask for some hot sauce on the side. Just a heads-up, your sandwich might take a little while to come out, but it's worth the wait. Grab a coffee, settle in, and soak up the charm of this little neighborhood gem. read more

Finally got around to trying these sandwiches. The meat (prosciutto and ham) was incredibly fresh and tip top quality and so was the French baguette but the sandwiches had WAY too much butter in them.. like a block of butter.. every bite was like a mouthful of it and just felt so heavy after. I would honestly much rather have preferred some cheese in these sandwiches instead of all that butter. read more
We odered the daniel's favorite and bresaola which are the two popular ones and they both fantastic. They do use copious amounts of butter, so it can get heavy. If you prefer a lighter sandwich ask for lighter amount of butter. Parking: Free one hour parking on the street until 3pm read more
Love this place. I got the pink praline latte (delicious, give it a good mix), and the ham sandwich and omelet sandwich. Both are good and would get again. Ham sandwich - the butter piece threw me off. I've never had a sandwich that had so much butter, and it was good but was just odd. wasn't crazed on this sando. the bread was somewhat stale and a real struggle to bite into. the ingredients were fresh and delicious, but it was a bit too much butter in the butter ham sando. also, the price was exorbitant. :o i would not come back... read more

I arrived at 7 AM on a Thursday morning in hopes of beating all traffic and trying their sandwiches, which we had seen on Tik Tok. Unfortunately, on weekdays, sandwiches aren't available until 8 AM and I hadn't seen that in other reviews. Instead, I ordered one of each pastry available and the Pink Praline Latte. The chef/baker was welcoming and friendly- the service that makes you feel happy and appreciative. I got the almond croissant, ham and cheese, Tonka Bean Brioche, chocolate, Pink Praline, and the classic. I disliked the Tonka Bean Brioche; this was covered in a dust of sugar with a sweet cream center and while I like donuts and sweet pastries, I felt this one just tasted too artificially sweet. My favorites were the ham and cheese and chocolate croissants. They make them so perfectly, there's no need for anything fancy. I'm now salivating for a return for their sandwiches and I can assume the bread will be divine. read more

Once you taste the food, you can forget the challenges of getting it. The phone goes unanswered, and it's difficult to order online. And they have quirky hours (closed on Wednesdays for some reason). But it's worth it once you dig into the food. The half jambon buerre sandwich is enormous, a house-made baguette layered with good French butter and piled with fragrant shaved him and scattered with thinly sliced cornichons. The gem lettuce salad looks ordinary until you taste it. The lettuce leaves are lovingly layered with tiny, crunchy croutons, and the Dijon vinaigrette is out of this world. There are a few tables to one side, but I'd rather get something to go and enjoy it at home. You should, too. read more

I had a mixed experience here. The sandwiches were definitely the highlight--everything was fresh, flavorful, and well-prepared. You can tell the ingredients are high quality, but I did feel that the prices were a bit steep for what you got. While the dishes were good, I expected a bit more considering the price point. The service was not great, as the staff seemed slightly rushed and, at times, a little rude, and it took too long for the food to come out given that I only ordered two sandwiches. As for the ambiance, it was decent, but not quite what I had hoped for. There's no indoor seating, and the outdoor area was limited in space. read more
I only got to try Maison Matho via delivery (so glad they deliver!) so I will need to come back to see it in person. This small shop has been on my must visit list for some time. My guilty pleasure is a good French baguette sandwich w/ ham + butter + cornichons. There are several versions around the downtown LA area, but this one may now be my number one. The crust is the perfect crispy/crunchy without falling apart due to the soft inside. The amount of ham is very generous, and the butter inside is high quality French butter. You can taste the difference. The sandwich is topped with slices of cornichon and several grinds of fresh black pepper. Simple and perfect. Exactly what I wanted. I cannot wait to be back to try their drinks, other sandwiches, and pasties. Maison Matho, you have my heart. read more

Tried Maison Matho today for the first time and got the Bresaola Sandwich. While the baguette, the sauce and the toppings were good, the Bresaola beef itself was extremely salty. It was an okay sandwich overall, but I would say it's not worth getting out of the way for it. Pictured is half a sandwich, and it's a pretty good portion. Parking was a little challenging in the area too! read more
