Oh Max & Helens, woke up at 6:45 am for ya to drive over and wait in line before ya opened. Was it worth it? Yes it was but would I wait more than 30 minutes-1 hour or even more. Absolutely not! I would most definitely come here again but the hype just made the expectations way higher and thats why the reviews here aren't good. The bar is just set way to high to be the best waffles, pancakes ever. We got sat right away outside and didn't have to wait, the line wasn't long at all before they opened. Got their classic waffle and larchmont slam. We wanted to get their tuna melt but it qualifys at lunch for 11am. The waffle was crispy and really damn good but the honey butter made the waffle. Classic diner food done right. Everything we had was great and the staff behind the counter were super friendly. We sat at the bar, so I can't really speak on the full table service experience, but the atmosphere definitely had that old school diner feel. Only thing that felt a little odd was the 8pm closing time. Dare I say this is the best breakfast in Los Angeles. Went right at 8 a.m. on a weekday to avoid the line. An absolutely stunning experience. Seated right away. The waiters were refilling our water and coffee every five minutes. So attentive! The waffle with the Guinness? Just wow. The butter was decadent, and I slathered it all over my other food as well. There were multiple moments of silence during the meal when I was just smiling at how good the food was. Each component of the Larchmont Grand Slam was a standout. The velvety, fluffy orange eggs. When I went for dinner on Friday at 6pm, I waited about 20 minutes to get a table for 5 people, which was shorter than the 45 minutes for lunch on Tuesday at noon. The restaurant's small and located on a busy street, so I parked in the nearby neighborhood. There's indoor & outdoor seating, classic diner decor with a modern twist, and overall friendly service. I thought their menu was a bit pricey, but I'd come again just for the presentation, quality, and Tallow French Fries ($8.00), which were fragrant, well-seasoned, and perfectly fried. I had been to Max and Helen's before and was excited to go back to try lunch. Unfortunately, this visit was disappointing. We ordered a club sandwich, a BLT, tallow fries, and the celery root coleslaw. The sandwiches and fries were good, but the celery root coleslaw missed the mark. When it was set on the table, I honestly thought it was a pasta dish. There was no crunch and very little flavor. The bigger issue was the service. It took about 10 minutes before anyone approached our table. We ordered, the food was brought out, and that was pretty much the extent of the service until the check came. Nobody checked on us, nobody refilled our waters, and nobody cleared our plates. Midway through the meal, I started wondering if our server had left for the day. What made it stand out even more was the table next to us. When they sat down, I overheard an employee mention to the server that he had worked with one of the guys at that table at a previous job. As the meal went on, I couldn't help but notice that the employee was at their table at least once every five minutes, constantly refilling water and OJ, clearing dirty plates, and removing used napkins. Meanwhile, less than three feet away, we sat with empty water glasses and dirty dishes. At first, it was almost comical, but it really just highlighted the poor level of service we were getting. When it was time to pay, we had to wait again. I was just about to get up and approach the hostess when our waiter finally appeared. He never asked if we wanted dessert. I left disappointed. This place got so much buzz when it first opened, which was to be expected since it's helmed by OG chef Nancy Silverton and Emmy-winning producer/writer ("Everybody Loves Raymond")/foodie Phil Rosenthal. Located in charming and busy Larchmont Village, it initially had purported waits of up to 8 hours. The place is narrow and pretty petite; they added a good-sized patio later. About 6 months in, the waits have lessened, especially on weekdays. I visited twice and had no waits, but I was solo so was seated at the counter. They serve breakfast all day (8am-8pm) and lunch/dinner after 11am. The day-to-day operations are run by Phil's daughter Lily Rosenthal Royal and her husband Mason Royal. The decor and menu scream classic retro diner. The prices and food quality are of course more upscale. The bottom line for me is the place is totally fine as a local diner or if you're in the area, but I question the value of driving a great distance to dine here, or waiting more than 2 hours. There are plenty of quaint shops along this part of Larchmont Blvd, plus a lot of other eateries, both independent and chains. Since these were my first visits to Max & Helen's, I ordered the dishes that have received the most buzz. Breakfast was: the waffle, the Larchmont Slam, the hot chocolate. Lunch was: the patty melt, the tallow fries, the vanilla egg cream, the sour cherry pie. Waffle $17. From what I ordered, this was the best overall dish. The waffle was appropriately golden and crispy. The taste is not too sweet, but the dollop of maple butter makes up for that. Larchmont Slam $27--2 eggs, bacon or sausage, home fries and a pancake. The eggs were nicely soft-scrambled and had nice deeply golden yolks. I chose the sausage patties (you can get links too) and they were quite herb-y. The home fries are diced potatoes with lots of crispy edges, topped with sour cream and green onions. Reminded me of the potatoes at the Original Pantry Cafe, but crispier and with the toppings. The pancake also has nice crisp edges, a close second to the waffle. Hot Chocolate $9.50. Very thick and not too sweet, a bit reminiscent of the chocolat chaud at Angelina in Paris. Topped with a bruleed marshmallow. More like a dessert than a beverage. Patty Melt $27. High quality meat. The bread had little rye taste, it was very toasty/crisp, therefore quite greasy from the flat top. Nice caramelized onions and Gruyere cheese. Couldn't taste the spicy mayo. Note if you order the Cheeseburger Deluxe $27, tallow fries are included. Tallow French Fries $8. Very good, thin and very crisp. Vanilla Egg Cream $11.50. My first time trying this New York classic. Chocolate is the more traditional flavour, but I'm not much of a chocolate-lover. This was a fizzy vanilla soda, not to sweet. I'll try the vanilla milk shake next time. Sour Cherry Pie $12.50. The cherries were nicely tart. The crust was flaky, a bit over in my opinion, and a smallish portion. There was nothing wrong with the meal at all, but for the price I left feeling like I was paying a little extra for the popularity and location. The restaurant itself is absolutely beautiful though and has that charming old Los Angeles feel, almost like it has been sitting there for a century in the best possible way. We added our name to the waitlist & were told it would be an hour wait. Ended up being a 2 hour wait & were not given an update... Let's say it was demolished in under 2 minutes. I got the Larchmont slam with soft scrambled eggs, pork sausage links, a blueberry pancake, and the leek breakfast potatoes. Perfectly balanced and was a huge portion. My fiancé got the patty melt with a side of fries which were amazing. Do NOT skip on dessert, you must get the hot chocolate!! The main character was definitely the hot waffle with the honey maple butter. The hot and crispy waffle with a dollop of melted butter was one of the best things I've had. It was wildly good it took me on a rollercoaster ride. I'll go back just for the decadent waffle. The service was basic yet good. We got there at 11am on a Thursday and only waited a few minutes to be seated. I started with the hot chocolate, which was mind-blowing! So incredibly rich and sweet! Pretty much dessert in a cup, I recommend sharing! We shared the Omelet Florentine, Home Fries, and Waffle. The omelet was solid and simple. Big fan of Somebody Feed Phil here so the expectations were high and they were met! Chef Mason and the rest of the team were super welcoming and the service was attentive despite being super busy. Wait time for a single diner checking in around 8:30 am on a Saturday was 50 min (Feb 2026), but luckily the food came out fast once I was seated. It would've been nice to get a more realistic expectation for wait time since they told me it should be 20-30 min or less when I checked in. You can walk around the neighborhood while you wait. I found cheap 2 hr meter parking which worked for me but you may need to find longer parking in the neighborhood. Here's the important part: THE FOOD WAS GREAT! It tastes even better than it looks. Fluffy eggs were soft and seasoned, the potatoes with that sour cream kick, the bacon that just smells exactly like how some hot hickory smoked bacon should smell, and a giant pancake with a whimsical lemon poppyseed flavor and REAL maple syrup! And don't get me started on the hot chocolate with fire roasted marshmallow whip on top. Just wow. This is not your average diner food! This place lives up to its hype! But at the cost of a 2 hour wait haha. This is your typical diner fare food at 2x the cost. We were able to try the patty melt, tallow fries, waffle, a breakfast platter that came with eggs, bacon, and toast, and a hot chocolate. The eggs were super fluffy and even the bacon had a nice peppery flavor and thickness to it. My favorite has to be the waffle. It was perfectly crispy on the outside and nice and fluffy on the inside. It didn't even need syrup because the maple butter was to die for! The patty melt was kinda too oily and greasy but that is typical for a patty melt. However, I wasn't a fan of the hot chocolate. It was too sweet for my taste and it was like I was straight up drinking chocolate syrup. Would I go back again? Maybe not due to the wait and price but I do recommend at least trying it once. I came by the opening week and had the lovely time of waiting a good 2 hours BUT I'm efficient w my time, so I filled in w activities while i waited for my text that my seat was ready. I'm not sure if the wait is still crazy these days, but with Nancy Silverton and Phil behind this one I would assume its still a bit of a wait to get in these days. The wait aside the vibes here are immaculate diner vibes. Nice and cozy and staff to match. I had to come here to try the waffle after seeing a bunch of pictures of it, AND IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT. Perfectly crispy and nice bounce of chew on the inside. Pair that up with the Maple Butter they serve on top and some syrup and we've found one of the best breakfast bites in all of LA, and I'll die on that hill. GET THIS. I also got a little bit of lunch and tried the Pastrami Reuben. This was stacked with pastrami with an almost extra sour sauerkraut. Lots of flavor here, and make sure to wash it down with some of the vanilla egg cream soda. Ever since we found out about this restaurant opening up we've been trying to find a day to make the trip down. And I gotta say the wait was so worth it. The staff was super friendly and answered all the questions we had from food to merch. The feel of the restaurant is definitely a classic diner especially since you can see into the kitchen and how they're preparing the food. Everyone inside is talking and having fun while enjoying their food. I was a little bummer because I didn't look into the menu beforehand and realized that lunch didn't start until later. But nonetheless their breakfast items are so good. I wish I had more room in my stomach because I would've ordered more. read more

Came here on a Sunday around 10am and yes, it was a 2 hour wait BUT - the farmer's market is going on so check out the vendors in the meantime! When we got seated, we got seated on their outdoor patio which was a cute vibe. Our server was very attentive and we got our drinks out quickly with food coming out just moments later. Although it was a hot day, I still got the iconic hot chocolate and I REGRET NOTHING! It was smooth, rich, and delicious. With a dollop of marshmallow on the side, it soothed me and made me feel like it was Christmas time again. For my main, I got the tuna melt with tallow french fries while my friend got the patty melt with a tomato soup. Both solid choices but I preferred the patty melt ngl. I would probably come again if I were to go to the Larchmont Farmer's Market but I'm hoping the wait goes down at some point. read more

WHEN: Sun @5:45pm We lucked out on a 2-hour limit metered parking spot that costs $1.50/hour. After getting on their 45 minute waiting list, we walked around the area, checking out lots of wonderful shops. So passing the time was easy until we were seated. While there was seatings both indoors and outdoors, it was a chilly evening and we sat inside. The decor was simple and nice, and service was great. There we shared: WAFFLE W/MAPLE BUTTER - $17 Hot diggity this was good! Wow, we inhaled this dish in 3 minutes. That Maple Butter was magic and the waffle was made to perfection: Crispy on the outside and fluffy in the center. Perhaps the best waffles I had in my life! Ignore the price tag and get this--share it to justify if you need it! Don't miss out! LARCHMONT SLAM - $27 Two Eggs, Home Fries, Pancake, and choice of Bacon or Sausage. We chose sausage, which is one link split down in half, which was good, just like the rest of the dish. While my soft scrambled eggs was not soft, it was fine. I really enjoyed the Home Fries because they were crispy, cooked with onions,and topped with sour cream and green onions! Pancakes were good too! It was an easy and simple breakfast staple even though I felt it was on the pricier side. I love breakfast for dinner, and I'm glad we came here for that! Our entire evening in Larchment was under 2 hours because this spot is efficient and the food was so good you just did not want to slow down! read more

I had not heard of Max & Helen's previously, so was unaware of the hype. I don't usually go out to this part of town (though when I do, I do love the area). We went on a crazy hot day, so was glad we didn't have to wait (may be why there was no wait). The server was very friendly and made sure we had waters right away. Normally I think their outdoor area would be very comfortable, but like I said it was abnormally hot. The food was great! It seemed like the fries were a little hit or miss in some reviews, but I really liked them. Great flavor and very crispy. Definitely loved their homemade ranch! Being hot, it felt like burger weather to me. Solid burger, good sauce. Nothing overly remarkable but all around done well. The table also split a waffle, definitely see why lots of people recommend it. If I remember it was a sourdough waffle they make with their own starter. The maple butter was also fantastic on it! read more
