I tried courage bagels nearly a year ago and didn't enjoy my experience. It was a long wait and my order was wrong. I thought it could have been an off day and tried again today. The bagel is mid/overpriced and the wait is crazy. Even with a short line today we received one half bagel and drink then had to wait another 30 mins for the other half bagel. Staff have the worst attitude but I probably would too if i had to deal with nonstop customers. We came on a Monday slightly before closing and the line was still pretty long. The wait time was not that bad and luckily a table cleared up for us but it was still quite busy. I have to say that the bagel itself was personally one of my favorite bagels. It isn't very doughy but rather thin and crispy. The sesame bagel was really good. Perfectly crispy texture which paired really well with the cashew spread which was very mildly flavored and had such a creamy texture. The hand sliced salmon bagel did not live up to its expectations in my opinion. It wasn't unique, it lacked some acidity to it, the salmon was not particularly good and the overall flavor didn't quite come together. Other less hyped up places have a much better take on this simple bagel. The tomato was also not properly salted. The seasoning could have helped but there was very little of it. I would also avoid getting the everything burnt bagel just because there is no acidity to this dish so the Burt flavor is just extra saltiness. The simply perfect or simply something bagel was similar to this. I would also avoid the everything burnt bagel for that one. I would come again for a plain bagel and maybe try another spread but the salmon bagels are just not really worth it, especially since they are not cheap either. I do appreciate you can only get half a bagel. The place itself is quite nice and the service is efficient. Super cute and trendy bagel spot in Silverlake. The parking situation was a little bit difficult, and we ended up parking along the street near the LACC Parking Lot, around an eight minute walk from the shop. There was a pretty long line of around 10-12 people, but a worker came down the line and took our orders on paper to make the process move faster. The storefront is relatively small, with no indoor seating but several small tables and benches for outdoor dining. They do have a restroom inside with some merch to purchase, but there's no photos allowed inside. We were able to find a seat around five minutes after ordering, and sat at the table waiting for around 20 minutes to receive our bagels. We ordered 3 halves to try as many different flavors as we could. We ordered the cream cheese with tomato on the burnt everything, salmon on the sesame bagel, and the run it through the garden on the onion bagel. The worker was super nice in recommending flavors and corresponding bagel pairings since it was our first time here. They also had several exclusive bagels, like a cheese one and a sweet option with almond butter that looked really good. My only complaint is that it is quite pricey, especially for the amount of food you got. Our total ended up being around $33 for the 3 halves of the bagel we got. The bagels themselves were very good. Our favorite was the cream cheese with tomato - the burnt everything complimented the flavors really well and added a satisfying crunch, and the tomatoes and cream cheese had contrasting acidity and freshness that balanced amazingly. The salmon bagel was a classic as well - they definitely load up each bagel with a lot of dill and capers which we weren't really a fan of. The run it through the garden was more on the messy side, with almost too many components. Again, a lot of dill and capers, and the cucumbers and tomatoes lost some of their freshness when mixing with the cream cheese and warm bagel. That one was not our favorite but it still has unique components and tastes. Overall, I'd recommend this shop. They have super unique bagel flavors, which are definitely very Instagram worthy. My husband has been going to Courage Bagels for years, and I finally went with him on Good Friday, when he had the day off work and we suspected the line might be reasonable. We went at 9:30, and we were correct: we got parking right in front, and there was no wait to order. Courage is famously busy, and it wasn't exactly chill while we were there. The sidewalk patio was almost full when we sat down, and by the time we were done eating, there were people waiting, as well as the usual line stretching down Virgil. I don't like bagels enough to wait in line for them, but I kind of enjoyed the scene. A fun mix of Angelenos, trend chasers and bike dads (my Matt B.), and also like Korean church people in need of wholesome social outlets. I ran into a producer I know who was there with her cool dog, who (the dog) had on a Courage Bagels hat. Window service was friendly and efficient. I ordered a latte and a half size of the salmon roe bagel. This came with wild Alaskan salmon roe, cream cheese, dil, and red onion, and I got it on (half of) an everything bagel. I don't usually drink coffee or eat breakfast, but this was a nice treat. The bagel was great, Montreal-style with a bit of crisp to each bite, and I loved the briny roe and fresh dill. Like I said, I'm not really a bagel person, and you will never catch me waiting in a long line for this or any other bagel. You order at the window and they'll call your name when your order is ready. You can buy the bagels whole or half. I got the hand sliced smoked salmon with burnt everything (everything bagel that's slightly more toasted) and it was sooo delicious - it perfectly hit the spot. I liked Courage Bagels so much, I've been back twice in 3 days. Lucky me, I've been able to work my way through a lot of their menu (with friend assistance) and just love it. I had heard the bagels were the best in the city---better than New York even! How could such a place in East Hollywood exist, I questioned!? It simply can't be! But alas world, you were right, I was wrong. Courage Bagels is the best in LA. Insert a cliche review line questioning why I waited so long to go here, please. Now at Courage Bagels, you'll always be met with a line but I only waited 20 minutes on a Saturday morning to order and then on a Monday around 10am I had no wait to order. Saturday morning moved fast, they were taking your order while in line to keep things speedy, so then once at the register they just rang you in. After ordering, drinks come out first and fast, which is very nice so you can sip while waiting. That being said, their drinks have all been mid that I've tried - the Mexican Mexican Heirloom Hot Cacao, Hojicha Latte, iced coffee and Vanilla Paste Latte. Next time, I'm trying one of their juices! Those look legit! Now after ordering and sipping on your drinks, it could take some time for the food to come out. I saw someone complain after waiting 20 minutes today, but that is totally normal here. Both times I've gone now it took about 30 minutes for the food to come out, so just keep that in mind and keep yourself busy while waiting. They have a few tables for old people like myself to sit & wait or enjoy their meal. Now onto the eats, the Simply Delicious is my #1 stunna and it's just as it's name says. A burnt everything bagel is nicely topped with cream cheese, capers, olive oil, pepper, lemon and a healthy serving of salmon on top. I want this every.single.time. i'm at Courage. The Cave Cheddar touts it's great return apparently, with a sign saying "It's back!!!" on the side of the building. On a dark toasted sea salt bagel, topped with tons of bandaged cheddar cheese, freshly sliced tomatoes, olive oil, sea salt and wild oregano - it's another banger. The Roe! ~ you must add the exclamation mark in its name~ has a thick layer of Wild Alaskan Salmon Roe on top of a generous cream cheese topping, some dill, and some onion. This is the most expensive combo on their menu clocking in at $26 for a full size portion, but if you love little fish eggs, this'll have you in Heaven. I truly enjoyed this but honestly liked the Simply Delicious better for my salmon fix. And then, a bit more basic but another favorite of mine - the Crunchy California. It comes with almond Butter and Sqirl Strawberry Rose Geranium Jam for a nice PB&J style bagel. I like this one a lot because you can really see just how good the bagel is. Their bagels are seriously other worldly with an almost mochi-like texture to them. I've never had such a chewy interior on a bagel, let alone one with such a contrasting crispy exterior. Came here early and I'm glad I did because a line definitely started forming right after. Timing seems to be everything with this spot. The bagel itself was really good, you can tell the ingredients are fresh and there's real attention to quality. Everything tasted clean and well put together, not overly heavy or sloppy. It's the kind of place where the simplicity works in its favor. That said, I don't know if I'd be willing to wait in a long line for it. It's very good, just not "stand around forever" good in my opinion. Also wasn't a huge fan of the seating situation. I went when it was probably peak time - late morning on a weekend. They have a hand-written menu taped up on the glass, but it's been the same menu for a while I believe. I love that you can order halves and wholes of bagels so you can try a variety. You order at the counter, you can't go inside nor is there indoor seating. We got a whole of the Hand Sliced Smoked Salmon on an everything bagel. Then we got a half of the Roe! Wild Alaskan Salmon Roe on a sea salt sesame bagel and half of Run it Through the Garden on sea salt sesame. We're dairy-free and they luckily do have a cashew cream cheese option, but it's $2.50 extra for every half that you order. So our total came out to over $50 which for a total of two whole bagels is pretty astronomically high. They have tables off to the side and it's up to you to pounce on a table when one opens up. They call your name when your bagels are ready and bring it out to you. The presentation of everything was beautiful, very photo-worthy. The Smoked Salmon bagel was definitely the best one of the bunch. It's good but it's also not incredible? It's a pretty standard lox bagel. At least they don't skimp on the amount of smoked salmon. The run it through the garden had fresh veg ingredients that would make any vegetarian happy, but I'd pass on this next time. For those who like salmon roe, you'd like the roe bagel. The bagels themselves are quite crispy and not overly doughy, so if you're into that, this place is your jam. They also hardly put any cream cheese on the bagels, I thought they could all use a bit more. Overall, ingredients tasted good and fresh and it doesn't make you feel heavy at all. Parking was impossible and I had my wife drop me off. At the end of the long line, you put in your order for their bagel sandwiches at a window in the wall. Everything on the menu is thoughtfully constructed and well-balanced. Their Hand Sliced Smoked Salmon comes on top of a nicely toasted bagel, with a light spreading of cream cheese, a freshly ripened heirloom tomato, red onion, capers for salinity, dill for freshness, lemon, pepper, and a liberal pour of olive oil. The sum of the parts is greater than each of the perfectly chosen ingredients. If you don't like salmon, you can get their vegetarian version, which basically subs the salmon for cucumber. My wife likes this vegetarian version, which is incredibly refreshing and crisp. This visit, we went with two of their specials. They had a "cave cheddar", which had their toasted bagel that was topped with a generous portion of funky, hard cheddar, tomato, oregano, olive oil, and sea salt. It doesn't sound like a lot of things, but they flawlessly dress the flavors to make it taste complete. I have been meaning to try this place for a while now but the line has just been too long every time I passed by. On a Thursday morning around 9:30 AM, I was determined to try Courage and prepared myself to wait in line. Luckily, there was no wait yay! I got the salmon lox on the everything burnt bagel and now I understand why people line up for this place. The burnt everything was the perfect choice and the bagel was very flavorful and everything just paired well. This place is definitely expensive but it was very delicious. Would I wait over an hour for this? Probably not, but I would definitely return to try their other bagels! My boyfriend got the same but with their vegan/cashew cream cheese and it tasted practically identical to regular cream cheese. read more

OK, this is one of my favorite spots to stop off when I visit my daughter in LA. The bagels are absolutely delicious. Everything that they put on the bagel if you order whether it's salmon fish just plain veggies is so tasty so fresh the bagel itself is crunchy outside and soft inside. I ordered the garden bagel with a mint tea. My husband ordered a plain bagel with cream cheese. We're both very happy and our belly is content!! You have to try this bagel spot whenever in LA. The best bagel in LA hands down. Will choose this place over and over and over again. The everything burnt bagel with smoked salmon has been the bagel I have always gotten since first coming here. The line can get long, and the parking is little hectic. But it is so worth it. The people here are always so friendly. S/O to Olivia, I usually get to see her when I go, and she makes it so personal when you finally get up to the front. In addition, get the OJ (so fresh!) We tried a few items: * Queso crema + tomate (surprisingly really good, light and fresh) * Smoked salmon bagel (generous portion, solid choice) * Sea salt sesame bagel -- probably my favorite, great texture and flavor One thing to note: the onion bagel with cream cheese was a bit over-toasted. This is my absolute favorite bagel place, the wait can be long but that's fine considering the bagels come fresh from the oven. The ingredients are quality and I've liked every flavour I've tried so far. Their hojicha latte is delicious and the staff is very friendly as well. I wish there was a bit more seating, but I also understand their limitations in that regard. Woke up early and was one of the first 5 customers of the day at their very charming location. While the reputation and smell seemed like indicators of something sublime, I spent $8 after tax and waited 20 minutes for a single everything bagel with plain shmear. While I can tell the bagel quality is excellent, I wish I got more of it. In LA fashion, it seems their bagels had been scooped, leaving me with a crusty shell jam packed with a (very sadly) unappetizing shmear. As you can see in the photos, it's practically 90% shmear, getting everywhere and completely eclipsing the craftsmanship, flavor, and texture of the bagel. I brought it home and gave the remainder to my roommate, and they fully agreed with me. TLDR - scooped bagel with way too much cream cheese for even more money. Would skip. read more

Courage Bagels is located on a very busy street and in a very inconvenient location. There isn't parking directly in front of it so you have to either park within the narrow residential streets adjacent to it or a few blocks down on the same street. You order from a small window in the front and usually there is about a 20 minute wait just to order. After you order it's probably about another 25-30 minute wait for your food. The entire process of ordering before eating took almost an hour itself. There is no indoor seating, but they do provide a few tables and stools on the side of their shop. Seating is very limited however and turnover is very slow. If you do manage to get a seat be prepared to have eyes watching you from every corner. Seating is a premium here but worth enjoying if you are able to find them. As for the food I can see why Courage Bagel is an icon for locals and tourists alike. You can smell the bagels and fresh ingredients through the swinging doors as the employee's run out to give customers their orders. I ordered the hand sliced smoked salmon over an everything bagel and asked for it burnt. It was delicious, but was it the most life changing bagel? Absolutely not. But was it worth trying at least once? Sure. The flavor profile of this bagel was very light and very subtle. If you're asking for a punch this one might not be for you, but for me it was perfect. The only thing I may want to change is asking for the bagel itself to be toasted versus burnt but other than that the fixings were on point. Staff here all hustle and are very diligent. There are orders coming out almost every other minute and if you get a chance to go inside to use the restroom, you can see the entire production line from bagel creation to order assembly. It's quite a sight. At the end of the day I wish I could give this spot a higher review, but based on its accessibility I had to knock it down a few stars. It's not wheelchair friendly, you can't order online, no proper seating and parking was a pain. Was it worth trying? Sure if you have no other plans besides trying this place for yourself. I get the hype now. Courage Bagels is a standout bagel shop on the corner of Virgil and Monroe on the edge of East Hollywood that has been lauded by both food critics and food influencers alike. So I finally got the chance to try: 1. Loose bagels - the poppy and sesame seed ones are my absolute favorite. 2. Jamon beurre - this was probably a one-off limited edition flavor, which were given in exchange for a toy donation during their holiday toy drive. This particular bagel rendered me speechless. From the airy, perfectly chewy sesame bagel it was on, to the French butter, and the impeccable jamon - devouring this bagel was a whole experience and a half. 3. Hand-sliced salmon bagel - perfect proportions of everything; no notes. 4. Roe bagel - while the roe was spectacularly fresh and delicious, I'll be brutally honest here. The burnt everything bagel is not my favorite vessel for this delicious topping. A poppy seed bagel would be my personal preference, and bring the best out of this topping. Parking was fairly easy on a Saturday morning - we found street parking on a perpendicular block. Service is fast and courteous. Will absolutely be back for my bagel fix! read more

This is my first visit to Courage Bagels. I had really high expectations due to various culinary and home cook influencers claiming that these LA bagels are better than NY bagels. I've had NY bagels so I was kind of skeptical, but after trying them fresh I have to say they're not wrong! These bagels are soft and fluffy, while maintain a bite in the crust. First of all, what an insane line if you go in the afternoon I waited 1.5 hours to order and get my food. It was definitely worth it, but I think I'd rather wake up earlier next time. Parking is atrocious of course, and seating is all outdoors. The staff are really kind and patient despite their business. Hand sliced salmon bagel - 10/5, lox is always my favorite. I love that they loaded this with the classic toppings and I put some of my roe on too. Every bite was chef's kiss! Roe bagel - 4.5/5, honestly really good but more one-dimensional in flavor. They are very generous with the roe! Tomato bagel - 5/5, underrated and must go crazy in the summer when the tomatoes are actually in season. Orange tomatoes are SUPER sweet! Sardinia bagel - 5/5, not for the faint of heart. The sardines are strong, but the flavors are well balanced by the lemon, capers, and dill. read more

this place completely changed that. I went in once just to try it, and it was so good that I ended up coming back three times within five days! The bagels are incredibly fresh -- perfectly crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. Everything tastes homemade and high quality. You can tell they really care about what they're serving. Courage bagels must be blowing up or something because the line here was going around the corner. It's in a difficult to navigate area with only street parking in residential neighborhoods, which took around15 minutes to find. Luckily, the line moves fast and we had someone get out of the car to order while we found parking. Lots of outdoor seating but in a cramped space and you're fighting for a table. Bagels were good! I love the dill on top of any lox bagel. In my opinion, there was way too much oil topped on the bagels and the bagels were rather toasty for my liking. Best bagel experience in LA! Perfectly balanced flavors. I finally checked out Courage Bagels and tried two of their signature items: the Run it Through the Garden and the Wild Alaskan Smoked Salmon. The Run it Through the Garden was incredibly refreshing--the cucumbers and herbs provided a clean, crisp taste, and the seasoning was spot on. As for the Wild Alaskan Smoked Salmon, it was perfection. At some shops, the salmon can be way too salty, but this one was just right. I paired them with an iced kombucha, which was a great choice. Low key, I wanted to find these bagels average because the wait is always 30+ minutes with people wrapping around the building, and I'm just not about that life... but lo and behold, I guess you'll find me lined up 7 AM sharp because sometimes, a bagel strikes the most impeccable balance between crispy and chewy and convinces you that you ARE about that life. My first "Run It Through The Garden" sandwich, I actually hiked it up Griffith and ate, watching the sun rise over the city. I mean, I don't think any other experience will be more Los Angeles than that. No worries, though; hiking not required. It's just as good sitting in the car, idling at a red zone, and dropping capers all over the driver's seat. That's also as equally Los Angeles as it gets. The second time I visited, it was raining. (Like flood watch pouring rain.) I really thought I'd gone pretty mad for some holey bread. But listen. When the friendly bagel man handed me a bag of a dozen warm loosies, and I hugged it tight under the umbrella, all was well in the world. Honestly really good bagels! The bagel itself was super toasted and really crunchy. There wasn't an overwhelming amount of cream cheese and the smoked salmon was pretty thinly sliced. I think the best part of this bagel for me was the tomato! There was no line when we went on a Thursday around noon but the wait for the food to come out about 20 minutes. We also got their matcha.
