Mai's Kitchen is a great place to go to for a nice cozy bowl of noodle soup. I got the Wonton Egg Noodle soup, and it was delightful. The broth was savory, it had great notes of pork/chicken. The BBQ pork was sweet but also savory, and the wontons were the perfect size and tastes. I like to make mine spicy so adding the pepper paste and some fish sauce made it hit the spot. I also got That Iced tea, really refreshing! Not too sweet! Service was a bit backed up because there were two big parties, and as it's a smaller establishment, it is understandable! I was craving soup--especially now that fall has officially started. It was late on a Saturday night, and if you're from Union City, you know nothing good stays open past 9 p.m. Luckily, Mai's Kitchen saved the day with their seafood pho. I wasn't expecting much, but the portion size was perfect to satisfy my late-night craving. I do wish it had more shrimp, but it came with imitation crab, an oyster, and fish balls. It was flavorful, satisfying, and had plenty of jalapeños and toppings to fill me up. I didn't get to experience their service since my husband picked up the order, but overall, I really enjoyed the pho and the fact that it's open later than most places around here. I don't usually write yelp reviews but I have to make an exception. I live really close to this location and come here often because of it. The last time I had come here I had to get a new bowl of pho because I had found a small fly, gnat, in it. After making the initial demand for a new bowl I found another gnat in the second bowl. I decided not to make a fuss, pay, and not come back. After a couple weeks, with an intense craving for some pho I decided to come back, mainly because of how close this location is, and how late it stays open. After receiving the first bowl, I took a bite of the meat and noticed a small black dot in the soup. I identified that it was an insect and told a server, dumping the insect onto the plate of toppings, as he took my bowl away. A few minutes later, a different server comes back and tells me that they could not find any fly inside the bowl (what a weird response). I showed them the fly I had dumped into the plate of toppings to verify my claim and about 5-10 minutes later received another bowl. After finishing the pho I happened to find another insect floating up from the broth. I knew how it would look, but decided to point it out anyway. The server looked at the fly and took the bowl back to the kitchen. Not even a minute later I hear "He's lying, he's lying" from the kitchen staff. Shortly after the server came back out and told me that it would be IMPOSSIBLE for an insect to be in my pho, that I was mistaken, and that it was actually a piece of pepper instead. I decided not to make a scene but I did ask others at my table if I could possibly be mistaken. They had also confirmed it was a fly. I left paying full price for my bowl of pho. Which I dont nessesarily mind. However, to claim that I was lying twice and to not even offer to rectify the situation after its happened again? Whether the fly had entered my soup afterward or had been inside since the beginning, both are unsanitary and this whole situation was handled incredibly poorly. I'm genuinely never coming here again. There are other pho places that are just as good, Pho Mama and Pho Ga 88 are both just a street away. read more

We came on a cold, wet night after spending an afternoon out in the rain watching a track&field meet. The boys both ordered the filet mignon pho, while I had the Mai's combination sandwich. The quick and easy meal hit the spot! The pho broth was comforting, with a twang of heat that lingered coupled with the tender meat and crunchy bean sprouts, the spoonful was just the perfect bite. There aren't many viet places around union city that accept card so I'm glad to know this is one of them. We ordered some pho bowls, a pork rice plate, and beef patty spring roll to go. Our favorite item ended up being the beef patty spring roll. Very fresh with a fried middle, tasty beef patty and yummy veggies dipped in their yellow sauce. So good! Soup and rice plate were solid, but will definitely dine in next time to enjoy it hot. Pretty cozy inside and saw a few others having dinner. Came here for my Vietnamese noodle fix and it didn't disappoint! Located in a small strip mall (among other strip malls), this place stands out for their nicely sized portions, good noodles, and generally pleasant vibes for a low key, relaxed dining experience. When we came on a weeknight to try the menu, there was only one other party in the restaurant so service was quick and easy. I can see how they might struggle with a crowd given their small staff, but it wasn't an issue when we went. We tried the spring rolls as an appetizer and I ordered a side of garlic noodles to pair with my bun bo hue (what can I say, I like them hot and cold) and my friend ordered a rice plate which he licked clean. I thought the garlic noodles were pretty good though I would have enjoyed them even more if they had just a tiny bit more kick. Overall, I'm going to add this to my list of places the next time I'm craving pho or spicy noodles! read more

We recently moved to Hayward after living in Berkeley for 28 years, so we had access to some great places for pho. We tried Mai's Kitchen today, and they didn't disappoint! We ordered two of the combination beef pho, one without tendon and tripe, and one without tripe. We ordered them to-go and asked for the noodles to be uncooked. I also asked for extra cilantro and they really gave me extra (see pictures)! I heated up the broth at home, and cooked the noodles for about a minute, then poured it over the meat and vegetables in our bowls. The broth was delicious, and they were very generous with the sliced brisket and rare steak. The ONE thing I could complain about is I only got one piece of tendon in my package, but it was very large and the perfect texture, so I really can't complain. Mai's Kitchen sure scratched the pho itch we had, and the food was good quality, reasonably priced and absolutely delicious! We will definitely be back, and maybe even dine in next time. We also had smoothies to go with our pho. My grandson had a mango smoothie, and it had really good and colorful gummy squares at the bottom. I had a "Happiness" smoothie that had mango, pineapple and coconut. It was SO good, and my little jelly/gummy things at the bottom made it even better! Thank you Mai's Kitchen. read more

Review for customer service -- Believe, it was the owner who we spoke with, but that person was running late today in the morning, we had ordered door dash. Thus the place was closed rouhgly 30 min after opening. Nonetheless the owner did make the food, and had it ready by the end of the window of estimated pick up time which was 30-40 min after they opened. Nonetheless, we had got there at opening and waited, and called but no answer since again they were closed. Ultimately left thinking they were closed that day. We brought up the miscommunication and confusion with door dash who declined to help us out initially but the owner was kind enough to cancel the order and thus able to get our refund. Speaks volumes of their character, and we were very appreciative! Will definitely have to come back again to try their food. As based on the reviews they have amazing stuff! read more

I get it, the regular probably know, but it's my first time here. I got the pho combo, it came out quick. Flavors was a little bland, and noodles wasn't fresh at all. I'd say it was just a satisfactory pass. NOTE: steak on the side cost .75 cent extra. That was not conveyed when the request was made. I feel like you should be told if something would cost extra to do. Here are the two pros: 1) They open late til 11pm 2) Combo pho was under $15. Upon arrival, there was a line at the register where people were paying or picking up their to-go orders. After getting seated and looking over the menu, the husband opted for the House Pho Special Combo and I ordered the Grilled Pork Vermicelli. Food came out quickly and was appetizing; the pho was good, but I have to admit my vermicelli was slightly underwhelming despite all the fixes. The restaurant is on the smaller size with limited seating. Staff was nice and welcoming, service was quick despite only one person working the floor when we were there. We tell him we'll just order to-go, out of respect since this guy is having so much difficulty running the store. He just looks pressed and tells us to wait outside. Another 40mins goes by, still waiting.. when he just yells at us. "What your order? What you waiting?" Like seriously? My order is on paper, process of elimination. Current pending tickets and new ticket orders can be separated. After he tried to defend himself and insult me, turns out the food was just sitting behind the counter. I requested a refund, but the staff there doesn't know how to use a simple POS system. These guys dropped the ball so hard. They couldn't even issue a refund on card and had to give me cash.
