Mai's has been around for a little while now and for good reason- the food is good, it's not crazy pricey, and they have good hours. I had ramen for lunch so I went with 2 banh mi for dinner- one special, and one sardine (may turn off some but ifykyk). A bit out of the area for me but not a bad option if you're in the area.

I was craving soup--especially now that fall has officially started. It was late on a Saturday night, and if you're from Union City, you know nothing good stays open past 9 p.m. Luckily, Mai's Kitchen saved the day with their seafood pho. I wasn't expecting much, but the portion size was perfect to satisfy my late-night craving. I do wish it had more shrimp, but it came with imitation crab, an oyster, and fish balls. It was flavorful, satisfying, and had plenty of jalapeños and toppings to fill me up. I didn't get to experience their service since my husband picked up the order, but overall, I really enjoyed the pho and the fact that it's open later than most places around here. This might just become my new go-to pho spot near home.

This is a very good place! I like every dish that I've tried but my favorites are the Combination fried rice and the Beef spicy pho. The portions are good for the price!

Came here for lunch on a weekday. Ordered #28 Beef Stew with Noodles. The pieces of meat were nice, big, long chunks, and tender. The carrots were big too. The broth was just okay. I could taste the bell pepper in the broth but other than that, not much flavor. I had to add hoisin sauce to give it some flavor. The price seemed a little high compared to other places.

Excellent food! Service was very good: attentive and friendly. Small space with a few tables, but seem to have a few regulars. Everything we got was delicious. Good music playlist too (R&B). We will definitely return.

Updating my review 3 years and many visits later. This place has been reliably good for a lunch date here and there. The quality has been consistent and the portion sizes large enough for two. Must tries: grilled pork patty roll, smoothies, & lemongrass curry chicken noodle soup.

Reasonable prices, clean utensils, and open until 11 PM -- this place is a cozy spot for many office workers heading home late at night. Every time I go, I always order their #21 Beef Pho -- the slices of beef are delicious, and the broth is rich and flavorful. After a long day without food, a hot bowl of pho really soothes my stomach. I personally highly recommend it.

Love going to Mai's Kitchen. The spring rolls and vermicelli bowls are the highlight. I think they hired a new waiter - he was super nice and attentive and has made the experience at this restaurant better :)

    The "piece of pepper"

I don't usually write yelp reviews but I have to make an exception. I live really close to this location and come here often because of it. The last time I had come here I had to get a new bowl of pho because I had found a small fly, gnat, in it. After making the initial demand for a new bowl I found another gnat in the second bowl. I decided not to make a fuss, pay, and not come back. After a couple weeks, with an intense craving for some pho I decided to come back, mainly because of how close this location is, and how late it stays open. After receiving the first bowl, I took a bite of the meat and noticed a small black dot in the soup. I identified that it was an insect and told a server, dumping the insect onto the plate of toppings, as he took my bowl away. A few minutes later, a different server comes back and tells me that they could not find any fly inside the bowl (what a weird response). I showed them the fly I had dumped into the plate of toppings to verify my claim and about 5-10 minutes later received another bowl. After finishing the pho I happened to find another insect floating up from the broth. I knew how it would look, but decided to point it out anyway. The server looked at the fly and took the bowl back to the kitchen. Not even a minute later I hear "He's lying, he's lying" from the kitchen staff. Shortly after the server came back out and told me that it would be IMPOSSIBLE for an insect to be in my pho, that I was mistaken, and that it was actually a piece of pepper instead. I decided not to make a scene but I did ask others at my table if I could possibly be mistaken. They had also confirmed it was a fly. I left paying full price for my bowl of pho. Which I dont nessesarily mind. However, to claim that I was lying twice and to not even offer to rectify the situation after its happened again? Whether the fly had entered my soup afterward or had been inside since the beginning, both are unsanitary and this whole situation was handled incredibly poorly. I'm genuinely never coming here again. There are other pho places that are just as good, Pho Mama and Pho Ga 88 are both just a street away.

    Kid happy with drinks.

Omg! I ordered number (21-Pho house combination). Super delicious!! We also had the mango smoothie and Thai Tea. Upon arrival we got seated and food was ordered in 5 min. Fast service with quality food, best combination!! Would definitely recommend this joint..

This is my local go-to spot for Vietnamese sandwiches and drinks for take out…read more I've visited for over a decade and appreciate how their food is no nonsense and solid. They are consistently very good at what they do! Sure, this isn't cutting-edge, fusion type of Vietnamese sandwiches and drinks but through all these years their tradition of delicious foods are stellar. In addition to their various selection of sandwiches and fresh-made drinks/desserts, they also have hot foods at their hofbrau section for various sides of carbs (rice/noodles), proteins, and veggies. Tips: - no credit cards establishment so bring cash for easiest transacting. - try to visit during non-lunch windows as the store gets quite busy. - their rice rolls with pork or shrimp, in addition to their vietnamese rolls are sneaky addictive. I recommend to try this spot if you're ever in the mood for yummy Vietnamese eats!

Their bánh mì is simple in the best way: really good bread, the perfect amount of meat, and a generous amount of fresh, crunchy veggies. Nothing feels overdone, and all the flavors just work together perfectly. $8 for a large sandwich. I also tried nem chua for the first time, so I don't have anything to compare it to, but I thought it was really yummy. Next time, I definitely want to try their shrimp rice rolls. I sat in there while I waited for my sandwich to be ready and watched what other people were getting. Everything looks really good and fresh. Pho VN is located in one of Union City's popular Asian cross street malls, sharing a large parking lot with other outstanding eateries. The space inside the restaurant is large and can comfortably fit small and large parties alike. Reminiscent of the classic Vietnamese restaurants in this area, you'll find each table stocked with utensils, napkins, and sauces and staff scurrying around with bowls or trays of them toward their hungry patrons. As we walked in, we were motioned to sit at any of the open tables; the staff greeted us with menus and got us started with waters. Their menu is comprehensive and includes all your Vietnamese staples including popular appetizers like spring/egg rolls, noodle dishes like pho and vermicelli, rice plates, and delicious iced drinks featuring the traditional phin filtered Vietnamese coffee. For the pho bowls, you'll have the option of a medium or large portion with the primary difference being the amount of noodles you'll get and a slightly smaller protein portion. I ended up getting a large and it was plenty filling but the medium seemed reasonable as well. With each bowl, you'll get a platter of bean sprouts and basil leaves to spruce up your meal. Highly recommend dumping those in right when you get the steaming hot bowl! I also ended up getting an ice coffee - the flavor was strong and balanced out as the ice melted. It was a delicious indulgence! When it came time to pay, we did so up front at the register. They are cash only but I believe cash apps are also accepted. The staff were quick, friendly, and thorough in their service. You'll have a pleasant time here with your party and minimal interruptions from the staff unless you're looking to refill on waters. Overall, Pho VN checks all the boxes for when you're craving a hot bowl of pho and meaty pieces to go with those bites. I haven't had a chance to try their other dishes yet but this location is conveniently located, easy to get to and park, and accessible to other activities and eateries nearby making it very likely I'll be back soon! This watering hole will surely host someone you know if you're a local and if not, get to know the owners as I hear they have origins in the community!

My partner called in two orders of chicken pho soup to-go. We were working from home with a sick child, so he rushed to pick up the order on his lunch. When about to eat, we discover they gave us 2 orders of beef pho soup in error. We're short on time so it's annoying & inconvenient, but no big deal, we'll just call them & surely they will make it right. WRONG. The lady employee said to come back & she'd give us the right order & throw in an extra soup. Given our time constraints for work, we were not able to go back in that moment. We asked if they could door dash the correct order to us. NO was the answer. Just give us a refund, since we don't eat beef & can't go back right now. Lady TOLD US SHE COULDNT GIVE US A REFUND. "WE DONT DO THAT" she said. I work with credit card machine so I know she could indeed give us a refund without the card present, but maybe she meant as a policy they do not. She kept insisting we go back in that moment to get the correct order even after repeatedly telling her we couldn't. It was not an option for us with work meetings & a sick child. She then told us to come back later if we couldn't go now. With gas prices so high, this was just impractical. After spending 10 mins on the phone with the lady who wouldn't accommodate us, I told my partner we would file a credit card complaint & will eat the soup without the meat because we had no other food readily & had to feed our sick child. In the afternoon, my partner decided he would drive there instead of filing a complaint, high gas prices & all. We call the lady again to let her know. SHE ASKS US TO BRING HER THE WRONG FOOD ORDER FROM EARLIER. Are you serious??? This is the first time she mentioned this to us. We took pics earlier & could show her as proof, but we explained we had eaten the soup BECAUSE WE NEEDED TO EAT LUNCH, but could bring her the beef, but it was just so petty & gross (HOPEFULLY THEY WERENT GOING TO SERVE IT TO SOMEONE ELSE 6 HOURS LATER????), I was outraged but kept my cool. I asked for her manager. She said the manager was not there. Again I asked for a refund, she insisted we bring her back the food. The conversation was so petty my partner told me to forget about taking her the old food, he didn't trust they wouldn't tamper with his new food at this point. I told the lady that we would be filing a credit card complaint to get our money back. She said "okay" and hung up. No apology. In fact, she never apologized for the ordeal. When this has happened with other restaurants they have made things right, EASILY. Which is what PHO MAMA should have done. Never going back again. We only went cus Red Chili in Hayward is currently closed. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE. Not to mention I'm still hungry cus that soup without meat was not filling. Plus, imagine the work environment there if employees are not at liberty to make things right in a practical and logical way.

TWO PHOS AND TWO RICE PLATES…read more The first time I came here was about a couple of months ago for Sunday dinner with my family. I'm not a fan of pho so I decided to order a rice plate, which was Combo Plate #2 that included one grilled pork and two fried chicken wings. The rice plate I ordered was ok. Even though the chicken wings were cooked inside the meat tasted bland. I wasn't planning to come back here anytime soon. On the menu however I saw a pho item that consisted of chicken quarters. The next time I came here was a couple of days later for lunch. I ordered the pho with chicken quarters. With the addition of the ginger scallion sauce the dish is basically Hainan chicken pho. I've had this type of pho at another eatery and is the best chicken soup I've ever had. Since the chicken isn't shredded, the meat isn't dry. Usually for Hainan chicken I would dip the chicken in the ginger scallion sauce. I did something different for the first time. I added the scallion ginger sauce in the broth. This brought more flavor to the broth. I'd rather have scallion ginger sauce in the broth than sriracha. I'm not a fan of pho. Having the chicken quarters pho provided me a different perspective on pho. When I started having pho I would order get rare steak and beef tendon. What I noticed is that the rare steak changes the texture of the broth, which becomes murky. Maybe that's why I never craved for pho. I find well done beef atrocious. After having the chicken quarters pho I thought why not try the well done brisket. About week later I ordered the well done brisket pho for lunch. From the outset I noticed the broth from the well-done pho is clearer than any beef pho before. How did the broth taste? The broth was the best tasting pho with beef ingredients. I think that has to do with not having raw slices of beef. The blood from the raw beef makes the broth murky. Since the brisket was well-done there was no blood that made the broth cloudy. Also the flavor of the broth enhanced due to the fat from the brisket. The well-done brisket give me a different perspective on pho. Maybe in the future I just order well-done brisket for pho. My last visit I had another rice plate. As I already ordered the chicken leg quarters pho I wanted to try the rice plate version. This dish is Pho Nation's version of Hainan chicken. Even though the scallion ginger was served this dish is different from Hainan chicken as chicken at Pho Nation is steamed and served hot. I ate two phos and two rice dishes. Normally at pho eateries I tend to like the rice dishes more, but at Pho Nation I enjoyed the phos more. If I want to eat pho with a clear yet tasty broth I would come to Pho Nation for either the chicken quarters or well-done brisket pho.
