UPDATE: the aftermath of this meal was quick. My mom and I both started having stomach pain and nausea. It has been 5 hours now of stabbing abdominal pain and nausea within 30 mins of finishing our meals. I'm not gonna drop my 3/5 score to 2, but this made me consider it. I thought that perhaps the 3/5 star average on Yelp for this place might have been superficial, due to the grimy appearance of the place, the barely functional bathroom without soap, etc. (side note here: how are employees all washing their hands if the only bathroom here doesn't have any hand soap and just has a watered down hand sanitizer? That made me uncomfortable.) However, I unfortunately have to agree with 3/5. The food was really not very good! I got the vermicelli with grilled shrimp. The veggies were unwashed, they put a very small amount of the pickled carrots, and the noodles were room temperature not hot. The shrimp were the worst offenders. Literally flavorless, I've never experienced a shrimp devoid of all flavor before. It wasn't even fishy tasting. It just tasted like nothing. The texture of shrimp, but no flavor, not even a grilled flavor despite it being grilled. It was only grilled on one side as well. The only flavor of the whole dish came from the fish sauce. This is a mom and pop place. I think the low reviews are for the decor. It's very outdated, like from my grandma's house, 80s vibe. The egg rolls were crunchy and good. My go to spot for Bun Bo Hue. They have a nice balanced broth that's spicy, herbaceous , and delicious. I've been frequenting this families pho restaurants for over 25 years and always enjoy their BBH. BBH comes with sliced beef, and lean pork, Vietnamese pork cake, and blood cubes. Their vegetables and herbs look like they're leftover from the previous table! And who doesn't serve water??!! You are FORCED to buy bottled water?! That's just tacky and penny pinching! Desperate to find a place to take mom for lunch because Elite Dumpling didn't have dine in and another dim sum place was closed, I arrived here. It's"cozy" with hanging curtains and feels like you are in a living room because you have a child sitting in a high chair glued to a screen watching a video, and older woman sitting around and the young lady doing it all surrounded by lots of homey decor. The bowls are expensive! $15 for mostly broth lacking in flavor. The Thai iced tea was good and that's it. I feel for the local shops and always want to support but not be ripped off. I had the beef stew with ho fun. Noodles were sparse and beef too lean. Nice plate of bean sprouts and basil. Had to ask for the little condiment dish twice and finally got up to ask for it. Parking is easy and there was plenty of it. The restaurant had a nice atmosphere, loud and casual. There was so many choices of banh canh it was ridiculous but in a good way. We had the banh canh cua (crab noodle soup) and the coconut one. We were amazed by how traditional and how it brings back memories of eating this soup in Vietnam. Like why is the xL the same price as a medium bowl in some cases? And why is a Kirkland water bottle $1 (they don't serve water on tap)? Nothing raw or under cooked but some were more well done than others with some having huge wads of fat attached or just floating on its own. I just had to put that lone fatty piece out to the side.
