We shared a takeout "max plate" for our group of 9 (kids and adults) as well as some salads, clam chowder, and mac and cheese. The meats in general were flavorful, tender, and juicy. Incredible BBQ for Maine. Especially after we were so hungry from camping in Acadia, this place absolutely hit the spot. Outdoor seating and indoor seating available, and it's as if pub met beer garden (which is the other half of this establishment). Our server was absolutely fabulous attentive, but not too attentive. Our food and drinks came out fast, but let's get down to business. How was the meat? I know I'm in Maine and I'm supposed to just eat seafood, but I had a hankering for bbq and this is the closest I saw to bar harbor. It was moderately busy on this Wednesday evening and we were seated pretty quickly. We ate inside. The servers were all friendly and helpful. The parking outside looks like a lot, but it fills in quickly. We ordered the Max Plate for $75 and it more than fed four of us. It would probably feed 5-6 people amply. We got checked into our motel and while my wife was showering I zipped over here for some takeout for supper. I ordered the sampler with the all 3 sides box to pair with it($25). This was a great deal! This included 4 oz of pulled pork, a quarter rack of ribs, 1 hot italian sausage link, 1 piece of chicken plus a cup of beans, a portion of coleslaw slaw and portion of potato salad. I placed the order at the hostess station about an hour before close and was told it would be 25-30 minutes and left my number to be called. I decided to wait in my car and it was less than 10 minutes before the hostess waved to from inside the building. When I got back to the motel everything was still nice and hot. It seemed like they gave us double portions of all the meats except for the sausage as the portions were large. The meat slid right off the bone on the ribs and the pulled pork was some of the best she's ever had. The sausage was spectacular, rich with flavor and juicy while the chicken was still good the other meats overshadowed it. Lastly, the sides...the beans were some of the best I've ever had. They were meaty, smoky, sweet & savory...damn they were good! Unfortunately I can't say the same about the coleslaw and potato salad. This could be due to the time of day when we got it. The coleslaw was a bland and a little dry while the potato salad was very dry and very eggy...both were helped by adding salt and pepper to them. If you like BBQ and get tired of the amazing fresh seafood out here it is a must stop! read more

Super laid back place on the outskirts of Bar Harbor that honestly makes you feel like you're in a cookout out in Texas or some other place south/southwest. Staff is lovely and even they embody some of that southern charm. We got the full rack of ribs and the Mixed Platter to really sample everything they have. All delicious - wonderfully seasoned, perfectly grilled, my ribs literally fell off the bone, sides are all 100%, what more can I say? Mainely meats is a must stop every time we come to Mount Desert Island. We've come here numerous times with little wait or parking problems. It's a rustic setting with a cool outside seating space. Next door is an ice cream shop and across the road is mini golf. We make an evening of it! The restaurants sits on the north side of the island about 15 minutes from Bar Harbor. If you like BBQ this is your place on the island. We love it and the fact that you can try a sampling of most of their offerings. Each table usually has a variety of sauces. I really enjoy their mac n cheese and baked bean sides . I love their ribs and enjoy most other offerings. Best of all the price is fairly reasonable, a phrase seldom said on MDI, at around $20-$25 per person. It didn't affect us, but we were sitting near the door and heard them turning away folks. The food was excellent. Ribs fell off the bone. Chicken was excellent. Spicy sausage was just that: spicy. Pulled pork was delicious. (I got the sampler platter). Potato salad is a bit on the yellow, mustardy side (which I prefer), but it disappointed my wife. Just be aware. The only thing mediocre was the baked beans. They were "meh", but they were also just a small part of an otherwise very fine meal. Prices were fine. We shared 1/2 rack of dry rubbed ribs, 1/2 whole chicken (yeah, I know that's a little confusing), fries and macaroni and cheese. We enjoyed the tender ribs and found that they were better with sauce. As for the chicken, it was super moist and didn't really need any sauce. Mainely Meat describes their two barbecue sauce as sweet or spicy. We only used the sweet sauce which was like a typical, reliable barbecue sauce that will satisfy many different pallets. The French fries were rather thick compared to most french fries but they were cooked properly and were tasty. The mac and cheese was average. We could not have asked for friendlier service! We enjoyed being cozy inside on such a cold, wet day. If the weather had been cooperating it looks like Mainely Meat has lots of outdoor seating as well.
