This place is real, though it can be real hard to find. Tucked in behind the gas station we almost missed it our first time. But yes, it is there and open. Ordering is informal but efficient. You'll get a beeper and your food is done quickly. Some items like the Jerk Chicken Wings take time, but hey frying wings takes time and you don't want them done ahead. Sauces are authentic, portions are good sized, the salads are fresh, and the folks are sweet. Definitely worth supporting them and getting a quality, fill-you-up meal. read more

Bare bones Caribbean fusion spot. The crab roll was probably the most disappointing - very salty and briny without much crab flavor. The jerk chicken sandwich was good - a touch of heat, saucy and messy. Surprisingly, the cheese burger was the favorite for our meal - juicy and sizzling fresh. One would think that behind a gas station would not be the best food, but that person would be wrong. We drove by the Sunoco at the fork in the road at the entrance to Mount Desert Island countless times and never noticed this place until we knew to look for it. It's a takeout joint with some picnic tables out back. It's not exactly a place I would stay to eat at, but you're not here for ambiance. We placed an order online while leaving a tour from Bar Harbor, and it was ready in exactly 20 minutes. We ordered lobster bisque, two burgers, the Bravo Me, sub side salad, and the Mule, and chicken tenders, 6 piece. Everything was absolutely delicious! The lobster bisque came with a claw and extra lobster meat and was outstanding flavor. The burgers were perfectly cooked to order, juicy, but not dripping with grease, on a nice brioche bun with some heft. The side salad was anything but the size of a side. They stuffed the rest of the takeout box full of it. The lettuce leaves were crisp and fresh, no wilted leaves. The chicken tenders were enormous, taking up the entire takeout box, and earned top marks from my kids. The speed of service, portions, freshness, and flavorful food, as well as a location that is ultra convenient, almost make a stop here inevitable for anyone venturing onto Mount Desert Island. If you're looking for some New England food mixed with Caribbean flavors, then this is the perfect place. Island Take Out is an unassuming place tucked behind a gas station in Bar Harbor. As the name implies, it's geared mostly for food to-go, but they do have some covered picnic tables. We sat there, and they even brought the food out to us with utensils. The hospitality here was so friendly. The staff was very nice, the service was fairly quick, and the food came out fast. They have a decent sized menu, and I was surprised to see offerings like rum cake. We ended up ordering the lobster mac and cheese and the jerk chicken. I was very happy with the portion size, they definitely did not skimp on the amount of lobster they put on the mac and cheese, and the jerk chicken was also plenty of food. While it's certainly not cheap, I'd say the cost is competitive for what I'd say is a pricier town. The food was tasty (it had a lot of taste), but I will say that it did not taste like authentic Caribbean food to me. It was more like American BBQ style. That being said, I'd recommend giving this hidden gem a consideration if you're in the area. read more

Simply perplexing to find some of the best Cajun seafood hidden behind a random gas station between two busy highways. But here we are. Drive behind the gas station, uphill, where you'll find some unmarked space for cars and a pop-up canopy with picnic tables. A door propped open with signage for today's specials beckons - Po'Boys? Here? Is this place legal? Yes, yes, and yes. The offerings at Island Take Out are actually greater than you'd think capable of coming from the small kitchen, but the employees we met seemed unfazed by our bewilderment and were quick to laugh when we asked whether the Po'Boy had oysters. "This isn't Louisiana," they said smiling, quick to recommend the Jamaican jerk style instead. When in Maine, you get lobster, so we settled on a Lobster Roll and Blackened Haddock and Shrimp Po'Boy (the special of the day), then settled in to wait and get feasted on by mosquitoes outside while we waited ourselves to feast. The neighborhood picnic theme somehow enhances the flavor, trust me. Time seems to dilate when waiting for that first post-hike meal, and we were ravenous by the time our food arrived. It was all worth the wait from the humble team. This is messy fare, and you'll be wise to keep the napkin box nearby. The lobster and haddock both possessed something so nourishing and soul-warming I almost forgot I was surrounded by Acadia fog. We arrived in the area after a long drive, hungry and too tired to cook. Island Take Out to the rescue! This is a small place tucked behind the Sunoco gas station (we actually drove past it the first time). No frills inside, you can order to eat there or take your food to go. The kitchen was bustling but the person takinf our order was polite and quick. There is no indoor seating but they do have outdoor seating in the form of 4 picnic tables under a tent--this was the such a peaceful place to relax on a warm summer evening while waiting for our food. I'd estimate the wait was about 25 minutes, so call ahead to order unless you have some time to spare. This is not really a quick grab-n-go type of place. Now, on to the food! My family ordered the fish nuggets, pulled pork sandwich, and kids chicken tenders. Everything was good and the pork was especially flavorful. Went here for dinner this evening and it was absolutely fantastic. First, do not let the location scare you. Yes, it is behind a Sunoco gas station at a busy intersection but that wasn't a big deal for us. There are 6 picnic tables under a pop up and you can always get it to go. They had a couple beers on tap including an excellent Orono/Wymer's blueberry ale. They also have Maine Beer Co Lunch in a bottle. Yum! Our party had the fish and chips, blackened haddock sandwich (x2) and chicken tenders (kid). We also ordered the jerk chicken wings. The absolute standouts were the blackened haddock and the jerk chicken wings. The haddock was super flavorful with just the right amount of spice as were the chicken wings. Just be aware that the chicken wings need to be prepared from scratch and will come out with the main meal. The fish and tenders were also good just not as great as the others. But still solid. Everything came with fries (there were other options but didn't seriously consider). The fries were great too. Perfectly cooked. We also grabbed a piece of blueberry pie to eat back at the house. That was obviously made by someone else but still tasty. Verdict from the family: Best meal we've had so far in Maine. Do yourself a favor and give it a try. Camping in Acadia, arrived late afternoon and wanted a quick bite. I had jerk chicken sandwich. There was like one other person and I got my sandwich and fries in like 5 minutes. It was really good. Perfect fries - thin, freshly fried food.. and the sandwich was amazing. Toasted, and topped with fresh tomatoes and lettuce. and the chicken was juicy and sauce amazing. After a long drive from Portland to Bar Harbor July 2025 we were very hungry. We stopped at Island Takeout which sits behind a gas station with limited parking. Don't let that deter you it is worth the stop. We got the jerk chicken (thigh and leg portion) which came with coleslaw, the Spinach salad with pecans, beets and the mango dressing (DELICIOUS), and a slice of blueberry pie. Seating is outside only. We sat at one of the picnic tables at the back of the building and thoroughly enjoyed everything we ordered. The chicken has a great coating, is cooked just right; the spinach salad with the mango dressing hit the spot and the pie just topped everything off. We felt it was a great dinner for a good value. We were exhausted and wanted something easy, casual, and non touristy/ not crowded, on a Saturday night in busy season. This place had good reviews and seemed casual, so we checked it out. I'll admit, despite the good reviews, I didn't have super high hopes. I thought it would be decent but nothing super good. I was wrong. It was pretty delicious! We rolled up about 5:50p and saw it was connected to the back of the gas station. Hmm okay, different. We parked back there with only one other car- right off Highway 3 off the main road. We ordered and went and sat outside at one of their four green picnic tables under their covered tent. Within a few minutes, tons of people showed up. Some to-go orders, and the rest filled the other three tables. We had just beat the rush. More cars came in but had no where to park. I'm not sure how they do it when they're busy-- and I read it's busy often. We ordered the jerk chicken sandwich- delicious! On a bun with onion, tomato, lettuce and It has a pineapple sauce (ask for it if they forget it). Tons of flavor and moist chicken. Simple, flavorful, filling. With a side of ruffle chips. We also got the island salad: fresh greens, onion, fresh bell pepper, tomato, honey mango dressing. That dressing was so good!! And the veggies were so fresh! We all loved it. We ordered the appetizer fried calamari w the spicy marinara dipping sauce - pretty good. Flavorful. Not the best I've had, but was good. We Also ordered the pulled pork sandwich. Came on a bun with Cole slaw and ruffle chips. It was good and flavorful. My son got the side order of Mac and cheese. It was a large portion and super delicious, creamy, twirly noodles that he loves, and we all shared it and loved it. The kids portion would've been smaller, but maybe bigger than I thought, and I didn't expect the side order to be that generous-- was great! We enjoyed sitting outside and they played good music. The service was good and the lady sweet who brought our food out. It did take awhile, I think due to togo orders prior to us, but we had patience. Mosquitos were going wild but we made the most of it and ate quick to make room for people anyways. Decent prices for the touristy area. They have a vast menu, from lobster rolls, lobster Mac n cheese, creative burgers, many sandwiches, salads, sides, and of course since they're Jamaican, they have Jamaican jerk chicken, jerk and bbq wings, jerk chicken sandwich, fish, sweet potato mash, and other things. It all sounded good. For the 2 sandwiches $15 each, side Mac $6, small island salad $8.50, and appetizer calamari $16.50, and tax, it came to $79 after our tip (my mom tips well).
