Above average quality food. Poor service depending on your server. Even if you phone in ahead and made reservations, they still won't make it ready especially on weekends and busy nights. Middle aged lady at the counter will not guarantee your experience there to be fully served, so heads up. The rest of the staff are generally kinder, especially the younger ones and the Japanese lady. There seems to be a major lack of staff personnel in comparison to how busy they are. Definitely agree that staff needs a morale boost from the look of expression and their enthusiasm. The rating of your food experience will much be dependent on which waitress serves you and how busy the night is. And mostly importantly (when you are being served by a friendlier staff), ask for recommendations for they will give you better suggestions according to their knowledge about the food. read more

I never review anything but I couldn't believe how bad my experience was. The food was okay but this has to be the worst service I have ever had. I was there for over an hour and nobody came to check on us once after dropping off our food. Our tea cups were empty after 5 minutes and no one brought us anymore. Multiple waitresses purposely ignored our stares and us trying to get their attention. One table next to us had to walk over to the kitchen just to order more food. We also could've gone up to finally get more drinks and our bill but we were so amazed by how bad the service was we wanted to see how long we would actually have to wait. Not one table has in the restaurant has been checked on either and everyone has empty plates and cups. I will never ever come here again. read more

Worst service experience I have never received from a place with actually good food. Story went like this. Ever since this place opened, I have went there at least 4 times. 1st experience was fine. 2nd experience was unpleasant but whatever. 3rd was best and we even received complimentary appie. My friend told me that if u tell the restaurant that you are a regular, sometimes the chef would give u something small on the house. So my 4th experience: my hubby and I invite 2 of my friends over for dinner and when we sat down, one of the Chinese server we always see came over and greet us. She said "hi, nice to see you again" I assumed she remembered us since we just came 2 weeks earlier. So I thought maybe I will try my friends tip. So after ordering, I asked about the free appie we received on our last visit and was wondering if the chef can prepare something special for us again since we have guests. Right after I said it, she gave me this " are you kidding me face" and said "oh last time the chef gave you the free appie because he chose to. I cannot ask him the question. If you want free stuff, you can ask yourself. So at this point I was like, okay so no freebie, no big deal. To my shocking surprise, this is what she said to me after "so this time you are asking him to give you free food. Isn't that like begging for food ? I don't think it's appropriate." Holy moly.... I have never seen a waitress who talks like this. Now that I think about it, I can't even call her a waitress ... Why in the world would you humiliate and criticize your customer ? Was she out of her mind ? Since my friends were there, I decided to keep cool and actually gave her face by saying "if it's too much trouble got you, dont worry about it " ... No Surprise, she wouldn't stop saying " I don't think it's appropriate and I will not ask for you" The woman didn't know when to shut up. I can firmly say that I will never enter maguroguy ever again. And I will pass this message to all of my friends. Sad to see a restaurant with good food that is being ruined by ignorant servers. I gave this place four stars only because the food is 5 stars and 3 wouldn't be fair to the food. I have eaten in twice and usually take out (over 10 times) because of the gong show that goes on inside the restaurant. The food is fresh and on point. Definitely a top contender for best sushi in the area. However, the service inside the restaurant is another story. I am actually not picky when it comes to service compared to some of the crap people complain about on here. When you attempt to enter the restaurant you will be greeted by a hoard of customers trying to cram into the miniature lobby. While being humped by strangers, push your way to the front and prepare to be ignored to the fullest. DO NOT wait politely! You will not be served! Be sure to interrupt the front desk staff who are only focused on placing take out orders over the phone. You can stand there all you want, the staff there are trained to not feel awkward or make eye contact when angry/hungry people are staring at them. This actually may be the only service training the staff receive. If you can get your name on a list after 10 minutes head outside and wait in the rain because there is nowhere to stand inside. Again great food, just take out. Bring cash to keep it it simple for the staff and run outta there with quality food. read more

I've been here a few times and we liked the food each time we dined there. The only thing is that they don't acknowledge you when you come in and they don't even ask the names so we can be seated accordingly. There was a time that there were lots of people waiting and some who came later were asked to sit first since they were standing near the person who came out. I wish they will at least acknowledge diners and have a system of listing the names as they come so everyone will be given a seat as they come. read more

My only negative is that it is often impossible to get through on the phone line to place a take out order and sometimes the service isn't the best. We made a reservation for 7. We are still waiting for a table half a hour later. The service is as lousy as usual. Never disappointing!

Not our first time but probably our last. We came in at 330pm and restaurant wasn't busy. We were seated and ignored for 15 minutes. We eventually had to call over a waiter for service. Very good sushi for the suburbs! It's our go-to place when we're in the area and craving sushi after months on Vancouver Island.

First time we tried this Sushi place last weekend. Place was very busy and seems that staff just don't acknowledge customers waiting to be seated. No word of whether they're taking names to be seated down nor any information whether there will be a long wait or not. BUT I liked the food and it has reasonable price too. They have a pretty wide selection of food and though we waited quite a bit till someone actually asked us if we're dining in but wait for the food to come after we placed our order was fairly reasonable. I heard that management has been changed and there were new hires, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. We definitely will come back to this place. A thumbs up. read more

Typical North American style sushi. Not very expensive, not very high quality. Good place to go if you're starving.

I always order the "chirashi don" aka chirashizushi which is essentially an aquarium over a bowl of rice (tuna, tuna belly, yellow fin tuna, salmon, snapper, tamago/omelette, seared tuna, octopus, squid, surf clam, pickled herring, delicious seaweed salad, refreshing daikon strings, lots of ginger and wasabi, and a huge pile of sushi rice with a special topping). NOTE: my photo does not show salmon because I ask the chef to sub it for tuna, but salmon is wild sockeye, NOT the Atlantic farmed kind. I hope I did not forget something... oh, yes, I did. Also, steamed tiger prawn. All for less than $15. If I were to get this dish in Vancouver, say Tojo, it would be $45 or more! More importantly, the fish is fresh, and I would know it because I am Japanese and my dad is a sushi chef :) Nope, this place beats my dad's homemade sushi for sure. I have read about this curt older server that seems to be spoiling the percentage for this restaurant. I have never been served by her, but if she were rude to me, I would still give this Maguroguy 100% and not leave her a tip :) Five stars on food. Love their spicy seafood noodles (huge breaded prawns, tender squid, and large scallops sizzling--veggies as well--in a red, creamy, red spicy sauce). RUDE HOSTESS AT DOOR! My wife and I thought the spot looked good from outside. After walking in the hostess kept ignoring me, it was busy but wasn't crazy, I was the only one waiting, after a few minutes of waiting patiently, she finally made eye contact and angrily made a GESTURE for "how can I help you", not even a sentence. I asked for table for 2 with a smile, she just ubruptly uttered 1 word "wait" and walked away... I was left standing and confused.. thought she was looking for a table. After a long while she just carried on doing her things and continue to ignore me. I attempted to ask again with a smile and said how long would the wait be, she simply waved her hand at me to tell me off and turned to someone else for conversation. I thought this was a joke for a sec, cuz there was no other way to explain this humiliation. If they didn't have a table all she had to say was we have no space, rather than being rude. At that point I just left and we went to Hanaya Sushi across the street instead, and had a great warm welcome and awesome meal. read more
