We were looking for a place OTW home from the airport, we wanted sushi, and we wanted to be able to park ok. MaguroGuy had decent reviews and was not too far off the highway, so we decided to detour there. We overordered (as you can see from photos) but since we're used to things being tiny and unsatisfying, we had no idea what we were getting into. The lunch special is great, and my companion didn't need the extra rolls with it, though they were really tasty. I ordered a smattering of rolls, and was quite full. The fish is good, there are slightly heavier on rice than other places, but at least there was a good variety to choose from. We opted to skip the sashimi platter as it was $80, way higher than anywhere else we normally go. The parking is fine, it's in a lot, and it was daytime but had a decent number of lights. Service was quite friendly, and the ambiance of the restaurant was very cozy, despite it being a decent size. There are a hundred other sushi places in the area to try, but MaguroGuy was a solid experience and I would go back. read more

This used to be a great restaurant. But the owner sold it (quite some time ago) and the new owners went from top quality fish to discount save-on fish. The hamachi nigiri was large, with a strange yellow/orange coloring (I have had hamachi hundreds of times and never ever seen it look like this). The texture was mushy, the flavor unlike any hamachi I have had before - a tough one. The salmon oshi was cold and the salmon tasted fishy/old (again, have had this many many places, so it isn't like I am judging against the first time trying oshi). Lastly, the old owner used to have a Banana Crunch Roll that was the bomb. Why this owner didn't learn how to make it and keep it on the menu is a head scratcher. I came here for lunch today, and I am upgrading my rating from 3 stars to 4 stars. Yes, I still feel that they sushi is mediocre the best, their food is not very authentic,they lack in service, but the lunch I had today allows me to look past those shortcomings. I didn't even know they had lunch specials (from 11:00am to 3:30pm). I ordered the sushi lunch box, which came with 2 pieces of nigiri sushi (salmon and tuna), a California role (6 pieces), 4 pieces of tempura (one yam, one sweet potato, two pieces of shrimp),two piece of gyoza, sunomono with shrimp "vinegared vegges," and karaage "fried chicken." Tempura (4 stars) - 4 pieces total (one yam, one sweet potato, two pieces of shrimp) - I liked it because it was crispy and not oily. California role (3 stars) - 6 pieces -As I have always felt about their sushi, it is mediocre but it's more than adequate as part of a lunch special. Nigiri sushi (2 stars) -Salmon and tuna -Same comment as above Karaage "fried chicken" (4 stars) - 4 small pieces (boneless) - It was good. It tasted like the kind of karaage we can find at a convenience store in Japan. Sunomono with shrimp "vinegared vegges" (1 star) - It didn't taste good and it scored very low on the authenticity scale too. There was way too much vinegar and other liquid; the ingredients were swimming in it! Gyoza (1.5 stars) - 2 pieces -Trader Joe's frozen pork gyza tastes much better than this. I liked most of the main items, like the tempura, the karaage, and to a lesser extent the California role. All of these for only $18 (in CAD), including the tax and a 20%+ tip, which is only $14 (in USD). I think it is a great deal for a decent lunch set. Yes, the service is still virtually non-existent. You would have to wait for a long time to be seated and to place an order, but once your order is place, the food comes out rather quickly. There's virtually no interaction with the wait staff until the time you pay, but that's ok. Not great service, but at least they are not obnoxious waiters. I was satisfied with my meal here, although it's kinda just your average sushi place. With a party of 9, we made reservations before hand and the table and all was ready for us when we arrived. After placing our orders, we got our food promptly. To start: -They pushed the fresh uni they had just received that day and it was alright, not very impressive. -The dragon roll was cutely presented, with eyes and ears and all. Picture below. -age tofu was quite good, but I've had better still. Entrees: -I had the shrimp tempura udon soup(forget the precise name) but it was yummy! Decent portion and flavorful, not too salty either. -Super Bowl for 14$ was humongous! Everyone at the table was surprised by its shear size, and it was also packed w fish and veggies. Failed the first time when I came on a Monday, when they are closed but happy I made it for their Lunch Special (11:30am-3:30pm) this Thursday. When we entered the place was buzzing with business but we got seated right away. The atmosphere is a little dark but it has a cozy, Japanese bar-like feel - especially with all the empty Asahi Beer can lined up on the walls and the booth seating. I ordered the Sushi Lunch Box ($13.95) and it was a plethora of Japanese goodies. The Miso Soup wasn't as salty as most miso soups, which was nice. The Chicken Karaage was a little dry inside but it was all white meat and the crispy outside wasn't oily. The Tempura was light and airy, and the ebi was fresh and the yam and sweet potato were cut thin. The Ebi Sunomono had a delicate vinegar taste, not super sharp or overpowering but the best part, it was topped with a ton of fresh baby shrimp - there was more shrimp than noodles, which never happens! The Gyoza was typical, I wish it was pan fried a little longer since it was a little soft. The Nigiri was fresh and had a delicious melt-in-mouth Salmon and Tuna, no fishy taste here! The California Roll was typical. Phew... yeah all that for $13.95! My boyfriend tried to order the Japanese Homemade Burger but they said they no longer serve due to not many people ordering it. Super sad, we wanted to try! They should really take it off the menu to not tease people. My boyfriend ordered the Beef Teriyaki Lunch ($9.50). The Ebi Sunomono that came with it was huge and like mine, it was overflowing with ebi! Like a shrimp pool party! The Beef Teriyaki was impressive, because we weren't expecting it to come on a sizzling hot plate! The beef had lots of flavour and plenty of it to eat with your bowl of rice. The sizzling veggies were a great balance to that protein rich meal. Overall, it was a really great meal and the staff were friendly, though they were quite busy with all the customers. We used to love coming here but lately the food seems to have gone really down hill. The last few visits been lacklustre but this last time the fish in my sushi smelt very fishy which was very off putting. I still ate it and it tasted okay but I just don't want to get it again. The other foods we ordered were again just okay, the flavours left something to be desired. The miso soup seemed saltier than it had been in the past. The service was pretty slow, two of us had gotten all our food and eaten most of it by the time the lunch box arrived and a miso soup was completely forgotten about. It was also very cold inside, it just felt like the staff working there no longer cared to be there and see burnt out. It was my favourite sushi restaurant 3years ago. Now the food was good , but not so special , instead the size of the sushi meat is smaller. The price went a little bit higher. Today's highlight is MaguroGuy tower, very special dish out. Artistic! However, the flavour of each ingredient is separated. There's no harmony in the overall taste. In my humble opinion, the most gorgeous Japanese resto in White Rock---and I've been to a lot, obviously due to my eating habits. For business meetings, I love their layout: they have a section off to the left as soon as you walk in that I usually request for. Been here so many times actually that I'm surprised I didn't write before haha (sarcastic to those who question hehe). Today I tried their Red Dragon roll, love the crunch and spicy tuna. their signature rolls highly recommended. Their hot stone beef is also a signature. MaguroGuy was recommended to me by, of all people, the Canadian border guard as we crossed from the US. He was perplexed, he said, that we would drive all the way up to our fave sushi spot in Burnaby when there is a perfectly great place much closer. So on our next trip north we headed there and were pleasantly surprised. Located on a busy-but-nondescript corner off the King George Hwy, MaguroGuy offers traditional Japanese fare, a variety of sushi, and some yummy-sounding specials-of-the-day displayed on a rotating board on the main wall of the restaurant. We weren't hungry for a huge dinner, so my daughter and I ordered a few of our standards: tuna roll, salmon roll, miso soup, sashimi, and some nigiri to share. All was fresh and delicious. The toro sashimi was especially good, and the HUGE chunks of toro were tender and silky. I also enjoyed the nigiri immensely. The hamachi - the standard by which I tend to rate all nigiri - was fantastic! My daughter enjoyed her rolls, and her tuna/salmon sashimi combo. We have been great supporters of the original owners but we were sorry to see that they sold the business. Under the new ownership the quality has gone down to one star. Portions are smaller especially in the Susi, Sushimi boxes and the prices have increased. We expect prices to go up as long as the quality and portion sizes remain the same. It is called inflation. They have noticibly changed from wild salmon to farmed salmon. Shame. they did not supply wasabi and ginger as expected in our take out and they got rid of those wrapped candies at the cashier when you leave. I went here in a group of eight and the only way we could be accommodated was in an extremely poorly lit table; it was hard to read the menu, let alone enjoy a meal. I asked one of the employees if it could be brighter or if we could sit elsewhere and they suggested I use my phone flashlight. Fast forward, my order was a plain and simple California roll along with salmon sushi, and 20 minutes later i was still waiting. Everyone else at my table got their orders already which were katsu's and ramen so my order should've been faster. Even my cousin who ordered five minutes later got his order. I talked to my server and he told me that there were a couple more orders ahead of me and that it'll be right out. Let me begin by saying the food was okay at best! The service was sub par. Once we walked into the restaurant, we weren't greeted by anyone as a lot of staff just walked by. We stood there for close to 5 minutes without knowing what is going on. Then another customer rushed passed us and went up to one of the waitress's and she was told to wait and that we were ahead of us. A busy restaurant is understandable but not having a system to actually welcome your guests in is just not acceptable. I do not mind waiting but it's hard to wait without knowing what is going on? I would have appreciated if someone greeted us and said the wait was.. however long. I hope it's something they can work on. Even though the place was buzzing, our waitress was prompt and took our order quite quickly. The food came in an acceptable time and was okay. This place is a gem! We found it by accident and it's totally worth it. The restaurant itself looks nice and the servers are very attentive. Wait is not too long and food is plenty. We were served soups and tempura(ordered Sashimi for two) and had plenty of food to keep my husband and I happy. My kids each ordered bento boxes. One of them has sushi while the other one came with teriyaki chicken. Everything was cooked pretty well although my kids weren't as excited with the chicken karaage & this salad with clear noodles, cucumber, shrimp & vinegar. I took my son (2 years old) for dinner at 5:45pm last night. The restaurant was not overly busy. A couple of spread out tables. I asked for a high chair and the pointed server pointed towards a stack of them. We were then left for what seemed like an exorbitant amount of time. Other tables around us were sat, placed orders and food was delivered. I eventually started waving my arms in the air to get some attention. After finishing taking ANOTHER order and delivering another order the server came over. We ordered what I would consider ($25 worth of food) a small order. It came out in shifts. The octopus tasted funny. I currently have the poops The salmon and avocado roll which was on their elevated maki price section looked as though it had been stripped off the skin of the fish and clumped together. The gyoza wrappers were horribly bland and gummy. The insults don't stop there. When we had had all we could stomach of this incipit food. We cleaned up our table and waited and waited and waited as 3 staff members served the table next to us. At this point my 2 year old had reached his capacity for being lodged in a high chair so we made our way to the front. When asked how our meal was I explained the above issues. Her response was I'll speak to the staff. No "I apologize" NOTHING WE WILL NEVER GO BACK TO THIS RESTAURANT AND I WILL TELL ANYONE WHO ASKS HOW FOUL IT IS. read more

Disappointed from the food to the service. We were seated immediately on a weekday around 6pm. The server took 15 mins to come to our table to take our order even though we had told them we were ready to order. The ambiance is very dark and there is a layer of dust on the lamps right next to our food. I had come here before for the yaki udon chicken noodles and they were delicious so I decided to get them again but this time the vegetarian version... very very disappointing. The noodles were just drenched in sauce with literally 2 pieces of broccoli and carrot. There was more cabbage than noodles, and the cabbage tasted so sour. No flavour besides the sauce in the noodles. The servers are consistently giving people the wrong food and super slow... either they are over-worked or just unorganised. Regardless, I don't think I'll be back. They were also quite rude when we requested certain things - like asking for a fork or telling them about my peanut allergies which I did not appreciate at all. read more

A great local spot for sushi! I got the party platter which was more than enough for four people - we were all full by the end! The sashimi was fresh and delicious and all the roles also tasted great. My only complaint is that they were hard to get in touch to place the order and I had to actively seek out the staff to pick up my order. Also, I waited more than 25 mins longer than the estimated amount of time they said it would take, so be aware of that! Overall, however, everyone was really nice and the food was good. The steamed rice was not good .. my husband usually eats two bowls of rice at dinner and he did not finish his rice. Sunomono was served with too much vinegar. Tempura was on the oily side. This is our "go to" sushi restaurant on the peninsula and the food quality is consistent and fresh. The one downside is they get very busy around dinner time so we were pleasantly surprised when we arrived with some non-sushi friends on Friday, January 11 and were able to get a table immediately. Our friends were impressed with the creative options which included the dragon roll and new-to-them the salmon/tuna sashimi. I haven't written a review for a while but after visiting this new restaurant in South Surrey, I just had to share with you how wonderful this sushi/ grill restaurant is !! Many of you might not know about it as it has just been open 2 months. They are located beside Starbucks in the location where Knight & Day once was. I have to admit that we hesitated to go inside for that silly old reason that we didn't like the previous restaurant which was there. That IS a silly reason, I know..... Were we wrong !! They have done a super reno job inside, and created a very nice ambiance with black & red brick, as well as lanterns which muted the light somewhat. A very comfortable and beautiful place that we found very relaxing. Their menus are gorgeous black & red. In an area with many sushi restaurants, their food rated amongst the best. For lunch we ordered a Vege lunch box & a side order of Chicken Karage which was more than enough for two of us. Very tasty. It's a fairly big Japanese restaurant with booth seatings. I think it would be good for large groups. We went in on Mother's day for dinner and it was pretty busy. There were several servers working. All of them were pretty attentive and was quick to refill our tea mugs. We ordered Dynamite roll combo, nigiri, salmon rolls and avocado roll, a fairly standard menu items at a Japanese restaurant. The first roll we received wasn't very appealing looking. Taste wise, it was fine but the rice was falling off and looked very unevenly rolled. When the next few rolls came, they were much better wrapped even though the rice still came apart when I picked up the nigiri. First let me preface this by saying that I am no sushi connoisseur. But I have been to plenty of sushi joints to know what I like and what I don't like. For me, you can see whether the sushi chef is skilled or not by looking at the rolls and how they are wrapped.
