I'll use one of my favorite dishes as an example, Pad Krapow. Pad Krapow consists of meat such as pork, chicken, beef, and seafood stir fried with Thai holy basil and garlic. It is served with rice and topped up (optional) with fried eggs . The main seasonings are soy sauce, Thai fish sauce, oyster sauce, cane sugar, and bird's eye chili. This dish is typically somewhat spicy due to the bird chilies. When it's done authentically, the flavor of the basil and the garlic are dominant. Lastly the flavor works best when the pork or chicken is ground. In almost any Thai restaurant in OC this dish is sliced chicken breast in oyster sauce with no chilies and some bell pepper. If that sounds bland, it is. The food at Ma Dee is authentic Bangkok street food. Everything from the noodle dishes to the soups are amazing. It's a hole in the wall but so good. read more

I ordered takeout and waited like a half-hour even though I was the only person in there which was a bit frustrating because I was trying to get home. I got the pad see ew with tofu for myself and a chicken teriyaki bowl for my fiancée. The pad see ew had great flavor, but it was really oily. The chicken teriyaki bowl was mostly rice and didn't have a lot of chicken, but I guess that's why it was only like $6.75. Overall, decent but I'm not sure if I'll come back. read more

The couple who ordered the food there seemed to wait for a while.. Only one person in the kitchen (Tony is Thai), and they had many calls for to-go. Be more patient and understanding. Visa and master card only! Minimum credit card usage is $12. Bring cash! Parking is very small but no problem to park. - Gluttony Expedition - Eggplant with spicy garlic sauce: $7 for one of the meats/tofu, $8 for shrimp. It comes with rice and salad, but I opted out for tofu instead of salad. I picked "beef". Beef was a bit chewy but tasted good. Basil Tofu: I'm a big fan of "Thai basil", so this was a winner for me. It had fried tofu, onions, red bell peppers, Thai basil and green onions. Nice spiciness. I like it. Coconut ice cream: It was a bit lighter than usual coconut ice cream at other Thai places. Very good, indeed. Jasmine tea (Hot): $1.50. It's in a plastic foam cup. This is very small whole in the corner Thai restaurant that can be mistaken for a take out spot. We stopped in at 8PM on a Saturday night to get some hot Thai food and saw that there only four tables seated out of the six and a gentleman waiting for his pick up order. Be sure to avoid the dinner rush unless you don't mind waiting almost an hour for your food. We were lucky to the rush that came in right after us but nonetheless it was still a long wait for the food to come out. From what I noticed there were only 2 cooks and a lady running the register. RED CURRY WITH CHICKEN - $9- Aromatic, rich, and not unbearably spicy. I love how generous they were with the amount chicken, bamboo, peppers, and basil that was given. Even better was that this came with a PLATE of rice, not just a little scoop. Let me make this clear: They give rice at no extra charge! KAO SOI WITH BEEF - $8 - Prior to ordering this I've only had Kao (Khao?) Soi at Noodle Tramp over in 4th Street Market. Dare I say this is better? The Broth provided that comforting, heavy red curry flavor I was searching for on that cold evening. Squeeze out that piece of lime they provided into the Broth and you have yourself heaven in a bowl. In comparison, MaDee's broth wasn't too heavy like Noodle Tramps but as flavorful which is a plus in my book. Unfortunately I didn't get to try the Kao Soi with egg noodles as they ran out. Luckily the rice noodles, bean sprouts, beef, and red onions all worked in symmetry to provide spoonfuls of smiles. The thin crispy noodles also add another layer of flavor as well as texture unlike the crispy but plain wonton strips you get at Noodle Tramp. I only wished they gave pickled cabbage or peanuts to add more depth. My only complaint about our first visit at MaDee Thai Kitchen was the fact that we waited 50 minutes to get our food order. They never warned or mentioned that the food would take that long and we had a few groups come in and leave due to this. MaDee Thai Kitchen is a pretty legit place for Thai food! I only know this because my Thai friends have taken me to Thai town in Hollywood and had the un-Americanized version of dishes and some more home style cooked dishes that aren't served at Americanized Thai restaurants. These not so common dishes aren't really on MaDee'a menu either, but we happened to see some pictures and descriptions of them on Yelp. Thankfully they were able to make them after refreshing the dish names! Pad Kee Mao (drunken noodles) is one of my favorite dishes! If you like pan fried noodles (the thicker, flat type of noodle) and a kick of spice this dish will not let you down!! The Boat noodles are one of my favorite noodle soup dishes. I can't even think of another flavor or soup base that could describe how amazing the soup is! Maybe it's just unicorn crack? Either way, it's a very magical soup that MaDee makes well. Even though they only opened a couple of months ago, MaDee is officially my favorite casual Thai food place in Orange County! I am in love love love with their Tom Yum Noodle Soup! The soup is nicely sour and each sip is so deliciously refreshing. You can choose between rice noodles or egg noodles; I prefer the rice noodles because they compliment the soup better. My mouth is just watering thinking about it. Their Pad Thai is so great as well. They are really generous with the amount of meat they put it every order. The noodles are also really soft and chewy and covered with delicious sauce. Om nom nom. Did I mention how nice the people who work here are? If you ever eat there, they are always cheery and ready to strike up a conversation. Last time I was here with my boyfriend, they even let us try some coconut ice cream for free. Went to the beach. Oh! got so hungry. Craving foods from the motherland! So I hit up my best friend, Yelp! There is no spectacular Thai around the area, so we decided to get the old faithful, nem nuong cuon from Brodard. But then we drove right by this unassuming Thai place that we are not recognized from Yelp! My GF gotto have her Thai foods, so..whatever..bye bye Brodard T_T As we walk in, I kind of figured that they'd just open recently. Everything looks new and the wall still blank. I looked at the menu and surprised to see some 'authentic' dishes that I don't really see at typical Thai restaurants. They have Thai Beef Noodle, Kao Soi Noodle, Mee Krob Lad Nah. We ordered the Thai Beef Noodle (with meatball in beef stock soup) and Kao Soi Noodle (topped with crispy noodle in Northern Thai Style curry)..ohh!! These made me feel at home. We had a little talk with the nice couple who ran the restaurant, and they gave us a free squid salad for being a first Thai customers. It's like a squid ceviche serve on a wonton crisp. I will be back when i'm in the area. Gotto try Mee Krob Ladnah, maybe Pasta Green Curry, and definitely have more Kao Soi Noodle! read more

I've been here many times now and each time I find myself leaving with a very satisfied tummy. The portions aren't big which is fine by me which means I can order more dishes to eat. I love their salads and my favorites include the squid and the beef salad. The fried tofu is also really tasty. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside served with a sweet chili sauce. The curry noodle soup is also delicious, although I thought the noodles were a bit overcooked. I like to put a little of the "prik nam pla" in it. You have to ask for it -- it's a chili garlic sauce even though prik nam pla is chilis in fish sauce. The pad kee mau is really good too, not too greasy and very flavorful. We also tried the chicken satay which was just okay. The other thing I really like about this place is that they also offer sticky rice and brown rice apart from the regular white. Service is really slow because there is only one person cooking back there, but if you are patient and not in a hurry, you can get some really tasty Thai street-style food in OC. read more

This is by far the best Thai place in the Newport area. The only other places in close proximity are Diho Siam and Thai Tasty, which in my opinion are both gross. The wait for food is typically anywhere from 15-30 minutes, so make sure you have time to either wait for your order or call it in beforehand! Some of my favorites here include: Pad see ew with beef (make it spicy) Kao soi noodles with chicken: think yellow curry turned into a noodle soup Tom yum noodle soup And yellow curry with tofu for when I eat vegetarian. The only thing I wouldn't recommend ordering is shrimp in your dish. I've had it 3 times in different dishes and it always tastes fishy and gritty. Maybe it's frozen? Not sure. I just love Ma-Dee. The food is so good and fresh! I always get the Healthy Brown Rice which is rice that's dipped in the fryer with veggies, tofu, and cashew nuts (I'm a veg) and the BF gets the Chicken Pad Thai. Sometimes I get a Fresh Roll too. So yes, the food is wonderful! They have a vegetarian section on the menu which makes me a happy little vegan. A few things that would give it 5 stars instead of 4... When I call in my order they say 20 minutes but it's usually 30. They really could use another hand at the front desk...the lady always seems super duper busy between taking phone order, ringing people up, and bringing food out. I mean i like this place in terms of the tastiness of their food but there are several things that i dislike about 1. They use everything in plastic like plastic containers and Styrofoam plates. They do not use washable bowls, plates, utensils for people who are dining in. I greatly dislike this because it is really bad to place hot food on those cheap bowls and plates instead of the normal ones. First of all, when high temperature food comes in contact with the plastic containers or styrofoam would melt. This means that once it melted into the food and we eat it, we are eating all the toxic into our body and those melted chemicals are cancerous. I don't understand why they don't use washable plates and bowls for people dining in, wouldnt it be cheaper so they dont have to keep buying those throw away materials? Also i think its wasteful and they dont even recycle those plastic containers, which is bad for the environment. 2. There is not enough table. There is only 3 or 4 sit in tables with 4 chairs 3. The location of this restuarant sux. Its at a random location thats really inconvenient. I also don't think its worth all the drive to come here when my experience here is only so so, not super great Overall their service is good, but some of the Thai spicy spices are missing which all the other Thai places have. The food is good but i dont know if i would come here that often when some other places are also good or even better with good location. Small hole in the wall establishment tucked away in the corner. You order at the counter and take a seat. There are about six tables, half being a table for two. On my experience, we came at 8:15pm(an hour from closing time), and five tables were occupied, but no food on their tables. There was one lady running the cashier stand while being the server. This was an indication that this place was busy, but also understaffed. Due to shortage of space for indoor seating, a lot of people were ordering take out. Many orders were coming through and we haven't even ordered yet. Dishes began to come out slowly, so tables were not getting served all of their dishes at the same time, but instead in intervals. It was clear that there was lack of workers here, or they were just really slammed this night. Regardless, it was a wait of 50 minutes before my order came out. Red Curry with Chicken: $9 for a generous portion of rich, spicy curry. It was quite watery, however. AND a plate of rice. At no extra charge nor a scoop, a heaping portion of white rice is provided. Kao Soi with Beef: $8. The broth of this dish was comforting and flavorful. It came out hot, the rice noodles delicate, and plenty of beef and bean sprouts in the bowl. The thin crispy noodles add a nice texture to combine it all together. Add a spritz of lime and this dish is a winner. I enjoyed the Kao Soi most and don't see it on menus often, so I'm happy they offer it and do it wonderfully. Not a lot of options for Thai food in the area aside from Thai spice and Fusion near the airport, so the lady and I were excited that a new option just owned up! We arrived right before they were closing so we decided to take ours to go. The owners were so nice! They ran thru the menu with us since it was our first time there and even gave us complimentary Thai iced tea! I had the pineapple fried rice which and my girlfriend had the pad see ew. Both where very good and they give large portions so we were able to share with each other and still had some for lunch the next day. This is a great, authentic place. Being of Thai decent, I am very particular about Thai restaurants or "Americanized" dishes. My favorite Thai place is a simple food stall named Malee Thai Food in the Maunakea Marketplace food court in Honolulu. This is up there with that beloved food stand. I love it when Pad See Ew is made with Chinese broccoli! Little things like that make me happy. The kids love the grilled meatballs (dipping garlic sauce is AWESOME), chicken satay, pad see ew, moo ping and fried rice. Hubby loves the beef panang, along with the other dishes mentioned. I LOVE their Thai beef noodle soup. Truth be told, being a garlic addict, I added the leftover garlic sauce from the grilled meatballs and moo ping to the soup. LOVE it. Now, if I can get them to add funky organ meat, that will just put it through the roof to make it Ono Kine Grindz! I wonder if they offer non-menu items that may not appeal to the general public. We had the sticky rice and mango last night...so good. Can't wait to return to try Kao Soi and other goodies. I've been having Thai Town withdrawals ever since I went home to Irvine for break. I didn't think I would be satisfying these cravings any time before I went back to L.A... until I found MaDee Thai. If you're looking to eat here, you don't have to worry about putting on your Sunday Best. I wouldn't call MaDee a dive, but it looks like your typical take-out joint. A quick glance at their menu, however, will suggest the complete opposite. Yes, there are the classics like pad thai and papaya salad, but there are also items that you wouldn't normally find at a Thai restaurant: Grilled Squid, Pork Jerky, Soft Shell Crab... it all looked so good. Because we were limited by the size of our stomachs and our wallets, we decided to go with the Pad See Eew, Soft Shell Crab, Eggplant and Boat Noodle Soup (keep in mind that the Boat Noodle Soup is not on the menu). The Pad See Eew was absolutely delicious... the flavors were all there. The Soft Shell Crab was crispy and meaty and went so well with the citrusy sauce that came as a side. The Boat Noodle Soup had a rich, deep broth flavor with delicious fish cakes. The eggplant with spicy garlic sauce was SO tasty (and the sauce definitely packed a punch). My husband and I jokingly say that we're "spoiled" when it comes to authentic home-cooked Thai food. Perhaps it's because I've been eating my mother-in-law's amazing Thai cooking for the past 17 years. However she lives in Las Vegas and unfortunately, we can't conveniently drive over there whenever we crave her food. Having said that, we've been searching for a "decent" Thai restaurant in South OC for quite some time now. We actually gave up for a while because we found ourselves comparing them to what we like. A few times, we ended up just driving all the way to Thaitown (in Hollywood) when we were craving authentic dishes (a few places over there are mama-in-law certified, lol!). Anyhow, my co-worker had told me about this place. I usually never get too excited whenever someone recommends a Thai restaurant, but we gave it a try because my coworker said it was, "a hole-in-the-wall place with food that tastes just like I had in Bangkok". This place far exceeded our expectations. At first we didn't see green papaya salad on the menu, but when my husband asked the lady if they can make it (spicy please), she was taken by surprised maybe because she was tickled that my half-Caucasian husband could speak a little Thai, lol! She was so kind and happy to make it for us! Their's was quite flavorful compared to many places we have tried in the past. That was actually the first time I've had it with bits of lime zest in it before, which added an extra burst of freshness! We also ordered pad prik king with chicken (it's the green bean dish on their menu) which was delicious...just the right amount of sweet and spicy. Personally, I was impressed to see makrut (kaffir lime leaves) in the dish because a few places we've been always seem to leave that out of this dish (it's just not the same). We also didn't see beef salad on their menu (but I didn't ask), so we tried the classic Crying Tiger...always good and great dipping sauce! I wanted to try their pork jerky and rice, but according to the lady, the pork had just been marinated and she said it wouldn't taste good if she cooked it now (bonus points for honesty and that's totally something my mother-in-law would say, lol!). Their Thai tea was also very refreshing because you could actually taste the brewed tea, and there wasn't an overkill of half & half/cream. All in all, we almost had the feel like we were in"mom's" house eating her cooking. We were satisfied, grateful, happy, and most of all, left there with full tummies! :)). OH - MY - GOD...this place is amazing. The only thing I don't like about it is that it closes on Tuesdays, but that amazing staff needs a break! Pretty sure it is a husband and wife team that run it, we see the same 2 people in there every time we go... My husband and I tried it a while back and haven't been to another Thai place since! I cannot get enough of the curries and my hubby loves EVERYTHING he has tried (pad Thai, kao soi, mu ping, the list goes on). We always get an order of the potstickers...they are incredible. Overall, the food is always fresh, flavorful, and authentic. Like I said earlier, the staff is also great. Always the same man and woman, so they get to know you. They are always friendly and willing to customize an order. Literally one of the best restaurants in Costa Mesa, Thai or not!! We eat here at least 3x a month and you should too!!! read more

Come hither. Wait what? **[There is a shorter version at the end]** I saw this restaurant a few months ago on the "hot new business" list and I was obligated to try it because the reviews were actually good. Look I usually don't like going to a restaurant based on the stars because ever since Yelp started, I've noticed that many people mark down or up an establishment, especially a restaurant because of its service. Ethnically I'm Chinese, and I grew up going to a ton of Asian restaurants, and it comes down to, if they acknowledge that you exist, its pretty good service. Aside from that small side story, I combed through the reviews and everyone said the food was fantastic, and personally I LOVE Thai food, like I can die happy eating Thai food from a fine restaurant, so I gave this place a shot. A few tries later, I'm still going back. The owners, I'm guessing since they're always there are so nice and genuine, I hate going there and only leaving like a $1 tip since most of the time I to-go my orders. I feel so guilty, but I'm also a poor student, I can't afford leaving 10-dollar tips, and not having lunch the next day. Anyways it's a small establishment, it seems they didn't do much decorating, but what does that matter? They usually have clean tables, and decent seating, and isn't that what matters if you eat in? So far the handful of time I've been there, I've ordered: Pad See Ew with Beef Pad Thai with Chicken Chicken Satay Kay Soy with Beef Shrimp fried rice Thai Tea I absolutely love everything on the menu I ordered. Everything is always pippin' hot even by the time I get home. Nothings ever too salty, lest I can say for some other Thai places I've been to and there isn't the metal taste that you get when the chefs screws up and turns up the heat too much. They know how to cook their food, and its so awesome each time. The Kay Soy with beef is a little on the spicier side, so be warned but the crispy noodles included makes the experience of eating it wonderful. Pad See Ew, I can't complain, neither for the rest of the items I have ordered. They also accept credit cards, I think Visa and MasterCard only, but I have yet to try with AmEx. It doesn't seem they have a minimum charge too, unlike most Asian places. A big plus especially for a small establishment like this. **Dear I made this story too long, but as promised the shorter version:** Yes it Is a hole in the wall, but the owners are fantastic, always genuine, and nice. This is probably your best choice for authentic thai food in Costa Mesa. Its reasonably fast, reasonably priced and has friendly people. I generally get to go, so I guess the fact that they do not serve beer is easily remedied. I have gotted the Pad Kee Mow with pork (not on menu and really good), the Pad See Ew with beef (a classic dish done well), and the Pad Thai with chicken.
