FAST AND FURIOUS RAMEN: KOKIYO DRIFT We drifted over to this ramen spot after a brisk ride on the Newport boardwalk nearby. Resembling the ramen stalls in Japan, this small shop is very limited in seating for 10 patrons max. You order via self-serve kiosk like in Japan. But there was a worker that was kind enough to walk us through the ordering on the kiosk. The menu is also very simple, concentrating on a couple variations of ramen and some sides and appetizers. The food came out pretty fast, so I didn't get furious from being hangry. RAMEN WITH CREAMY BROTH- was mild in flavor, the broth was not thick as you would think being creamy, it was thin and runny, very liquidy. I wish the soup had more umami taste. When you have a lot of neutral flavored toppings in the soup, the broth should be well seasoned have extra deep richness to flavor the other ingredients. The chicken had a nice char that gave it depth of flavor. A mouthful of all the ingredients together made it a decent dish. CRISPY CHICKEN TENDERS- So good, I would come here just for these. Crispy, they were indeed, and a little kick of spice to boot. The meat was juicy with a crunch on the outside. Dip it in the semi sweet sauce and I am lovin this Asian version of Raising Cane's. These are a must if you come here. Because the shop is so small, it does not have its own restroom. So you have to use the bathroom at the neighboring Japanese restaurant with your receipt as proof of purchase. So plan accordingly, since you are consuming soup, after all, you might end up driving too fast, too furious, back home to relieve yourself.
This has been our go to place for ramen when the team at work is craving for it. This is right off PCH in the same plaza as Jack in the Box and Doughboys Donuts. We usually place our pick up order online. The creamy broth ramen is good, we substitute the chicken for the pork belly chashu (way better in my opinion). It comes with bean sprouts, a whole egg, and green onions. I love their to go packaging. They separate the dry items from the broth so it's fresh when you get it. We tried their chicken tenders and that was okay. Creamy broth is made with CASHEW MILK, so it's good to note for nut allergies. Otherwise, the clear broth will work.
Came across this restaurant in the corner of the shopping center just randomly. We stopped at the mini mart to grab some soda and noticed a few different restaurants actually. Visible from the street/corner, it is behind the Jack In The Box. Feels like a neighborhood restaurant, based on the crowds in the area and the open kitchen dining space. I could not wait to try the dumplings. First time here I came right when it opened. The parking gets filled easily at this plaza. It is a small restaurant, seems more like fast pace, order and eat type. Inside fits average of 10-12 people. Ordered the creamy broth with Pork Belly Chashu and the crispy cilantro garlic chicken tenders. Big portion, and the meals were very good, tons of flavor, a lot of toppings are included. Service is fast, and staff were very friendly.

A highly rated ramen place in Newport was what I was craving after a day in Balboa. It is located in a plaza on PCH, and it is small with ability to seat maybe 12 people. Owner is super nice, and ordering was easy. Since the creamy ramen uses nuts, I ordered the clear ramen. The broth was light, and it was okay. Their fried chicken used really good garnish as spice, which I appreciate. If you are in the area, it is worth a try.
It's a limited menu but oh my gosh the ramen is so good! Just beware that it's quite a wait for your food. The staff puts a lot of effort and insane amount of dedication to preparing each order and ensuring it's perfect in terms of presentation and quality. We saw one of the restaurant staff blow torching our pork belly to perfection. Highly recommend you order ahead by like 40 minutes to make sure you get your order on time. People tend to bulk order. Was not disappointed by the ramen broth and pork belly at all.
Nice cute establishment. It's small but they work with what they have. The seating is unique and it makes you remember it. The presentation of the ramen is incredible. My only huge concern was that the eggs were cold-ish in the middle AND the broth was not hot hot. It wasn't even hot enough to need and wait to eat it. I spent the whole day in Newport Beach and had walked and ran for miles so I was wet, cold and tired so i really needed a hot item to pick me up and this was mid just because of the heat. They had cucumber lemon water available for self serve which was a neat touch. The employees were great and the speed of food was fast considering they had many online orders they were working on. I stayed an extra 15-20 minutes recovering from the day and it felt cozy to do so. I am thankful
One of my biggest guilty pleasures is eating ramen. Consequently, I eat them often from many different places throughout the year........and Kokiyo became one of my favorite places to eat from in recent times. The soup both creamy and clear is absolutely delicious! The noodles come in just the right texture and portions. I love their pork belly chashu toppings. It has a nice aburi flavor along with melt in the mouth texture. And in terms of karaage available in the area, Kokiyo serves one of the best! The batter, the texture, the flavor is just perfect. Coupled with easy parking, friendly atmosphere, and efficient service, I can't find anything to complain about. I look forward to returning again in the future.
I've been to Kokiyo 4 times now and it's one of the best ramen spots around. Food is great and they are quick and friendly. I highly recommend checking them out.

Found my new go to spot whenever I'm near the beach! The place is small, with only four tables inside but I saw many people placing orders for to go. We ordered their clear and creamy broth ramen the latter containing cashew milk which I was pleasantly surprised by as it was my first time hearing of a ramen broth using that type of milk. Noodles were perfectly cooked and broth was delicious. We also ordered their gyoza and their spicy chicken tenders which in my opinion was the star of the show. Their house made sauce for the tenders really topped it off and I would come back just to get these again. We tried both the strawberry lemonade and thai tea slushie both which were surprisingly really good with our meal as the thought of having slushies with ramen is kind of a weird concept. Service was amazing in all aspects and cleanliness of the place was spotless. I'd recommend this place to anybody that would be in the area

Noodles were a good texture. I also ordered some chicken pot stickers. While I thought they were good. The wrap was falling apart when trying to grab them to dip in the sauce to eat. Service was quick and nice. There is an order kiosk for orders and it's a small space with spaces to eat.

I got the creamy ramen substitute chicken for tofu. The ramen was amazing and the tofu was fried and flavorful. The person taking our order was super helpful with helping us pick out what we want as-well. Super cute place there's just not a lot of seating. Would definitely go back. read more
We were in the area and decided to try ramen from here. They serve chicken bone broth ramen, and you can choose to have it either creamy (rich and milky) or clear (fat-skimmed and clean). You also order in front via a kiosk. When I asked the server what the difference was between the two broths, I didn't get a clear answer. The difference in texture does create unique flavors, but they both use chicken bone broth. The ambience was decent, but I did notice some noodles on the floor underneath our table. I got the clear broth ramen ($15.50) with extra chicken ($2.85), and it was delicious and fairly rich in flavor. The chicken comes thinly sliced. If you're hungry, ordering extra meat is a good idea. read more

This small and hidden ramen spot has a simple menu that includes ramen, pot stickers, and tenders. Their ramen packs a lot of flavor with its rich broth and packed with fresh ingredients. I was really impressed with their ramen and I'd come back for that. Their pot stickers are made fresh daily and come out with a steamed top half and crispy on the bottom. They use a ponzu sauce for dipping which gives it a nice citrus touch. Their tenders are cooked in a wok with garlic and chili peppers. They come out with a nice crisp on the outside and juicy on the inside. They have a self service model to order and they'll pick your bowls and plates up when you're down. Overall rating is C. Not bad. But not that good either. Small restaurant with 5 tables. Ordering is at the register but they bring you the food. Im not sure how these reviewers are giving this place 5 stars. They either never been to a proper Japanese ramen restaurant or were bought reviews. Ramen. The broth was okay. Noodles were good. The pork was chewy. Im used to tender melt in your mouth pork. Overall the ramen felt like a cheap imitation. Gyoza. Not bad. But for $8 for 6 i expected more. Chicken strips. They are not seasoned at all. Very very bland. I guess u need to use the mayo sauce but that wasnt good either. The workers were friendly. But i could tell they arent experienced and were fumbling in the kitchen. I also saw them taking out chicken from the fridge and microwaving it. I was going to give this place a 2 stars but considering the friendly staff im giving it a 3. I will not be coming back. For the money there are superior alternatives. Took this to-go! My husband picked it up and said the place was small but popular. We basically got one of each item. Love the small menu, 3 items with small variation. For example, we got the chicken with creamy ramen but we had the option of chasu or a clear broth. They also give a good variety of sauces. The spicy one is my favorite. They pack the ramen separating the broth so it doesn't get soggy which was great. Nice runny yolks too. Good amount of toppings. Pot stickers were on the smaller side. It seemed healthier than typical potstickers. Chicken had a nice batter. Good texture and good chicken ratio. There are chili but it didn't make it spicy. Needed a tad more salt for me. Overall really enjoyable. It's not like the bestttt thing ever, but it's solid and tastes homemade to me. Pretty affordable too. This fed me and my husband for about $30 roughly. read more
Had a nice late night fall dinner here and enjoyed all the warm comfort! We came for the ramen and tenders that did not disappoint. The ramen was creamy, full of ingredients, amazing flavor and beautifully presented. The tenders were very unique and had an amazing crunch outside. They are extremely rich and greasy so I wouldn't want to eat them as my sole entree but I'd recommend sharing! And of course could t pass up the dessert dumpling. So good! read more

This review is purely based on the food. Pork/Chicken creamy ramen- 2/5 broth was fatty, however it lacked flavor, even salt. noodles and ramen egg cooked to perfection! however nothing else notable to this dish. The meat, also cooked well, tender, but once again no flavor. Chicken Dumplings - 3/5 outside was cooked nicely, sauce was salty, but worked well. filling itself was a mushy Chicken tenders - 3.5/5 large pieces! it was the most flavorful out of the bunch, a bit dry, but the sauce was nice Overall it was not flavorful. It was around 60 dollars for this, but I would recommend going to santouka ramen in Mistuwa food court instead for overall better ramen for the same price. read more

Found this little hole in the wall ramen spot and was pleasantly surprised! Small joint with a few seats and water! I am assuming the owner is very sweet and was extremely helpful at giving us the "best thing" to get and the chicken ramen was phenomenal. You can tell there is good quality broth that has been marinating for a while and thick goodness! Potstickers were great and had some good crunch around it! Was unsure of what it was but again didn't matter because it some great flavor! Solid ramen spot and definitely recommend in my opinion! read more

Flavor was really good and the place is cute. I would recommend greeting the customers in and letting them know that you have to order it yourself. Had a little bit of a stomach ache afterwards, but it was totally worth it. read more

Came here out of desperation because my son was hungry, and I regret it. Easily the most overpriced and worst ramen I've ever had. Over $40 for cold noodles, cold broth, and absolutely no flavor whatsoever. The broth tasted like something straight out of a supermarket carton and microwaved. How this place has a 4.1 rating is beyond my imagination. Nothing about it resembles authentic ramen. I would love for the owner to reach out and refund me my money, because this feels like pure robbery. Do yourself a favor and stay far, far away. read more

After a beach day, my party and I decided to go grab some ramen and this place was the highest rated in the area. We decided to try it out to see what this place was like and got a tonkotsu ramen, a cold ramen, and some potstickers. The person who helped us was very nice and recommended the cold ramen. We got seated in the pretty small dining area, but it was still really cute as the decor had nice color palettes with good layouts overall. The cold ramen was pretty good and definitely an oddball. I recommend trying this place for sure. read more

I just left and was so impressed I had to write this right away. Their gluten-free options are amazing, offering gluten-free rice noodles, protein edamame noodles, and sweet potato noodles--all of which happen to be gluten-free. The owner even tested a new dish for us: chicken tenders made with rice flour instead of the usual half-and-half blend. They were perfectly tender on the inside, crispy on the outside, and topped with caramelized onions and peppercorns--absolutely delicious! We live right next door and can't wait to see these on the menu permanently. My boyfriend was equally impressed with the attention to detail, especially their to-go container. It's high quality, custom-made with their logo, and has a design similar to a Starbucks container with a ledge to catch any liquid. It's thick, durable, and has a pulp tab to keep everything secure for transport. The top layer holds the ingredients separately, and there's a tab to easily dump them into the ramen broth below. After the first bite, he made an "mmmhmmm" sound, saying, "This is ridiculous, oh so good!" The egg was cooked perfectly, and the flavors were just as impressive as the presentation. read more
Oof. We (my pet cactus and I, jk my partner) ordered clear broth and thick broth, chicken tenders(??), and gyoza. The chicken broth was nice and light. The clear broth had lots of flavor while not being overly oily. My partner ordered the thick broth, tonkotsu style, but mmmm the broth was so great! A little sweetness, savory, rich, but not overwhelmingly thick, I think the cashew milk helps with that. SO GREAT. The gyoza was light~ just like the ones in Japan, I really wanted vinegar to dip in~ I've not been impressed by chicken gyoza in a while!!! OKAY. THE CHICKEN TENDERS?!?!?! A MUST TRY. I was imagining more karaage style, but no. JUICY chicken, the batter like fish n chip fish batter, and I would love to bathe in the dipping sauce pls. I was first confused bc when you order, you order through self order touch pad, but I waited in front of the touchpad for a bit, but alas, I am a bit slow. Mediocre Ramen that lacked flavor. Both the clear broth and creamy broth were just okay. They do have outside seating available next door which is nice as the restaurant itself is really small with only about 4 tables. Service was decent. The highlight were the potstickers. With so many good ramen options, will not be visiting this one again. read more
