Since my first encounter with this business I have had a great experience. I stand by all my previous comments, but want to add that they also worked very hard for us in communicating with Apple (as the iMac that we originally brought in to repair turned out to be irreparable) and advocating for a replacement when it became obvious that there was no way to make our original machine work properly. Through the whole process they kept me informed of what was happening and did everything they could to help solve the problem. Terrible, they charge you a diagnostic fee to tell you something that Apple told me over the phone. They got back to me in 2 days with the answer I already knew, "your motherboard is defective" --- DUH, I know that! I told them "since I'm paying for a diagnosis I wanted to know what EXACTLY WENT WRONG" (ie Chipset failure, video card failure, etc) all of which would leave your fancy Mac as a nice paper weight but can be repaired with an actual computer repair technician. I gave them a week to figure out what EXACTLY went wrong. A week goes by and they called me to tell me it's ready to be picked up. I asked if they figured out the issue, the lady said "it's in the paperwork" I trusted them and sent my wife to pick it up (she works near by). Here is what my invoice said. "machine will not power on or boot, client needs data. technician confirmed client's observations; testing isolated issue to be defective logicboard - unit has failed and needs to be replaced. client declined logicboard replacement. Thank you! Really? what a waste of time and I could of used my money towards half the cost of the repair of my logicboard with people who actually fix problems and could of been fixed within that time. My general consensus of this place is - If it's not a cheap replaceable item they send you home with a bill for telling you what you already know or could have gotten free from the Genius Bar. They should take "repair" out "things they do". If your Apple flat out doesn't respond to the power button, it's obviously a mother board issue and if you want to pay money to hear it from their mouth, go ahead. They don't know crap about repair, probably only know how to swap ram and hard drives and then charges you an arm and leg to perform that. By the way, if you need new ram or a hard drive, Apple makes it user friendly to change those components, a simple google search will yield you to the Apple site with easy instructions to perform the swap. My suggestion if you are having Mac problems, go to Apple and let them tell you for free what the issue is, then go on Ebay and find a reputable computer technician who specializes in apple "REPAIR". read more

Used them under Apple contract -- they never answer the phone -- won't commit to when they will be there -- you have to give them a window of time when you will arrive -- not convenient. They replaced keyboard under contract but warranty is only good for 90 days on their work. Now it's 5 months later, I no longer have contract, and the keyboard is no good. read more

Since when does anyone look forward to a computer repair? Since yesterday, for me, after finding macVolks via Apple Support. I haven't had a particularly a negative experience with Apple, but I certainly have never enjoyed their assembly line type of customer service and also the amount of time it takes just to get an appointment--sometimes more than a week. So I was thrilled when I found macVolks Icn, an Apple authorized repair shop, had an appointment immediately available for keyboard repairs my MacBook Pro needed. I was even more surprised when I discovered there was no line or really any kind of waiting involved. The front desk person just had me filled out some forms and left my computer with them--I knew the repairs might take as long as a week because that is what I had been told by Apple previously--all in less than 20 minutes. I don't remember the name of the front desk person, but she was really pleasant to talk to. Then even more surprising is when I received phone calls from Chyara to keep me informed of what repairs they needed to do and to double check to make sure I had backed up my hard drive. She also called me to let me know that they discovered additional problems with my computer and to let me know what they were and that they would need more time to make them (understandably). She was courteous, knowledgeable, and very professional. This is the kind of personalized service I had not seen from a business in years and possibly decades. I was glad I took my computer to them before my Apple Care expired because they found several components that were failing and needed to be replaced. They did a meticulous diagnostic work up of my computer and probably prevented me from having to buy another computer sooner than I had to. I'm more than overjoyed with their work. My computer looks and works like new, including the keyboard! macVolks sets a new standard for mac repair. The bottom of my MacBook Pro started to bulge and macVolks was 10 minutes away with no lines and great parking. Dropped it off on Monday morning and that afternoon received a message that the battery, 2 fans and the peeling AR coating needed to be replaced under the extended warranty. I ignored the recall of the Seagate hard drive in my iMac until in actually failed. With my iMac being a work machine I needed to be up and running ASAP. I spoke with Sharmin--who is super nice--and she got me checked in really easily. Chiara--who is also super nice--confirmed the hard drive failed and quoted me a reasonable price for the repair. I gave them the green light in the AM and picked up my machine at the end of the same day. The trackpad on my macbook pro went irradiate causing my computer to become unable to use. I use this computer for work and needed it repaired asap but the Apple stores couldn't get me into the genius bar for 5 days. I took my son's MacBook Pro in for a screen-freezing issue (he had the issue on-and-off for more than 3 months) that I was hoping the technician at macVolks would be able to reproduce and be able to figure out the root cause of it.... and indeed, he was able to pin-point the problem (main logic board). Additionally, he noticed the screen had an issue that my son didn't tell me about, but since the laptop was still under warranty, they replaced the main logic board and a new screen. The MacVolks folks did a great job of fixing my 2012 iMac. I give them 5 stars and two-thumbs up. I had a failing Apple 'Fusion' hard drive inside my iMac. After trying repeatedly to get an appointment at the Walnut Creek Apple Store, I gave up. Apple/Walnut Creek had nothing for weeks and weeks. (What a joke.) But the Apple.com website also listed other authorized repair centers and I saw that MacVolks was only a mile away. So... what the heck. Well Chiara (pronounced Kee-ara) and her company did a great job. First, she responded with an email carefully detailing every option I had available (many). She also thoughtfully included pricing and approx times on everything. So I brought it in. Another woman checked me in and was very professional (the owner). Chiara the next day confirmed my diagnosis (failing hard drive) and I gave her the go-ahead to put in a 1TB SSD drive. She was also able to leave in Apple's own 128GB SSD and 'fusion' it with the new SSD. They installed the OSX I wanted (Sierra) and applied all the newest updates before I picked it up. At every turn, Chiara kept me informed by detailed emails. In short, I am now taking all my Mac gear to MacVolks! read more

My MacBook Pro is my office. When the hard drive went south, I was dead in the water. I have Best Buy and Apple support plans, but both required me to send in my computer and wait two weeks to get it back -- way too long. The Apple rep pointed me to macVolks. Sharman and the team team ordered the part overnight and had me back in business the next day. They're obviously very busy, but there wasn't a second of delay. In fact, they had the job done before the promised time. Who does that anymore? Great service. I vote for raises all around. Their knowledge and candor also impressed me. I spent some time chatting about Mac stuff with Sharman and Chiara, and found them to be extremely smart about Macs and technical issues, as you'd expect. More important, while they're Apple's biggest fans (me too) and have a vested interest, there was no spin. They were candid in discussing challenges Apple is addressing -- MobileMe with certain types of email, in this case -- and able to offer solutions as we talked. The Geek Squad took more than a week (and hours holding my computer hostage) before stumbling across a blog that explained what turns out to be a common problem. Apple was equally dumbfounded, but sent me four white papers where they thought I might find an answer. Sharman knew the answer as soon as I mentioned the problem. (In fairness, in all other instances, the Geek Squad has done a terrific job and Apple has had its act together as well.) I had a serious problem with my iMac, which Apple Tech Support was unable to diagnose correctly by phone. They then proceeded to do nothing to repair it at the Walnut Creek Apple store. I went to Apple Customer Relations, who offered me an onsite examination of the computer that it turned out was covered by my extended warranty, and furnished several phone numbers. MacVolks was one. I was extremely impressed! Lan Bui, the MacVolks technician, spent almost 2 hours thoroughly putting my computer through its paces in my home recording studio. He then took it back to the shop for overnight bench testing. When I picked it up, Sharman Corleto, in the MacVolks office, told me that the computer was not the problem (though Apple had thought it was), and that "as a courtesy" she would not charge me, even though she anticipated problems with being reimbursed by Apple now that the problem had been diagnosed as coming from an external hard drive. I have to say that I am not used to being treated like that! It's almost normal these days for a business to assume that "the customer is always wrong." This is a class outfit!! I will gladly call them if my computer needs anything in the future, whether it's under warranty or not. Based on my experience so far, I trust them to do their business RIGHT!! read more

i found this company five years ago when the first laptop I had ever owned(I'd had Apple desktops before then) fell off my desk after the cords connected to it got caught around my power wheelchair's footrests. The pulling of the cords rendered one of my USB ports inoperable and being a college student at the time, i had very little money and only a week in which to get a very needed USB port fixed. Add to that that the laptop was out of warranty and you found me opening up the phone book and dialing macVolks because I thought their name sounded interesting. What I got in return for the random pick, was the best business I have ever had the pleasure of working with. That first time, the lead technician/owner drove to my house and when she looked at my computer announced that instead of me replacing the logicboard out of pocket, the standard procedure when USB ports are broken, she could attempt to bend the USB port back into place manually, making the repair affordable for my budget. I opted for this choice and the company was able to bend them back into place, so that they worked perfectly for the remainder of the time that I had the machine. Over the years since, the company has helped me set up computers,, advised me about software and memory decisions and been willing to take calls if I had questions, further cementing my confidence in them. I have recommended them to numerous family and friends. Additionally, in the the last four months and especially in the last two weeks, they have even gone beyond the exemplary service that I'm used to and even that of my first experience all those years ago, and dealt with my newest MacBookPro which suddenly began to fail without provocation.They replaced the Trackpad when it failed, then took it back when the computer still refused to work properly, replaced the logicboard multiple times over three months, sometimes within days of each other, when new issues kept cropping up with the parts and wiring, resulting in various kinds of screen flickers and even replaced the screen in an attempt to return my computer to working order and stop these known factory issues for my model. Over the course of these repairs, they kept in excellent touch and worked to return the computer in a timely manner. Moreover, each time i called to report that the unit still had a problem, they came out quickly to pickup the machine. When it was it determined that these reoccurring issues were do to a defective machine, the staff worked hard to get a replacement from Apple. This process from including repairs to replacement took hours of their time over many weeks and, yet, they never tired of my inquiries about my machine or of detailing the process. Now, they are helping to get the defective computer shipped back to Apple and will help show me how to select and restore the parts of my backup data I want on the replacement machine. Making what could have been a stressful situation into one where I felt I knew what was going on and where there was a resolution possible. The value of macVolks' service extends beyond the ordinary in one other final way. As I mentioned when I began this review, I am in a wheelchair, add to that that that I have a speech impediment and I can be very difficult to understand and in need of my machine always being picked up rather than dropping it off myself. I also have motor coordination issues as well, those sometimes necessitating help in setting up my machine so that I can use it independently. macVolks' staff have all always been willing to take the time to understand me, to see me as the competent customer I am when doing business and have been willing to take extra time to set up my machine as I have needed in order to be functional in using it.. For a business that doesn't specialize in technology for the disabled nor specifically market to non able bodied customers, they are the best across the board business I have ever come across at making sure that all patrons, no matter their needs, succeed in purchasing and maintaining their computers. That truly makes them not only a company I recommend to all, but one I trust and for their work as well as their humanity. A true Bay Area business. read more

I was working on my iMac desktop when all of a sudden it went black. It had been giving me issues for a few weeks, but I have never had a computer crash, so I just thought it was too full. I found MacVolks in Yelp! and took it to them, not sure if they could do anything. They were honest and told me they weren't sure what if they could retrieve anything, but the hard drive didn't look fried, so they asked me to buy a back up hard drive and they will see what they could do. A week later, they called and told me they were able to retrieve almost everything! I was thrilled, needless to say, because I had so many pictures and important docs on that computer. They were unable to fix it, but as long as I got all my important data, I was happy! I couldn't be more thrilled and highly recommend them. Plus, the gal I worked with was really nice and patient with me as I asked all kinds of questions. I took my Mac Book Pro to macVolks thinking there was no hope since the nerds at the Apple Genius bar basically said "buy a new machine" for the cost of the repair. I took the machine to macVolks and Sharman patiently listened to my description of what was happening, then clearly explained the possibility of different issues that could be causing the problems. I left the mac with her to look at in the afternoon; the next morning I received a call from the office manager, Chiara, who politely told me that the machine was repaired and I could come anytime to pick it up. I was blown away! After hours wasted with Apple tech support and genius bar kids, macVolks fixed the machine overnight! The icing on the cake was when i picked up the machine, Sharman told me they had another identical machine in the back that was used for parts that had a stronger battery than my machine (my battery would not hold a charge much past an hour) she swapped the battery for no charge! Amazing service! Annie was super nice and polite the whole time I was working with macVolks. My laptop wasn't turning on, and Apple recommended I get my data recovered before turning it in for work covered under the warranty. When I contacted macVolks about the recovery, Annie thought macVolks could fix my computer without needing to wipe the computer clean--so I wouldn't have to pay extra for data recovery. And it turned out that was the case! They replaced my motherboard and even set up Time Machine on my external hard drive so I would have my backup ready to go. The motherboard and hours worked were covered by the warranty, and they formatted Time Machine and backed up my data free of charge! After I got home, I was confused how Time Machine worked, and Annie took the time to send me a detailed email with screen shots, showing me exactly how everything worked. So pleased!
