What a waste of a beautiful restaurant and bar. The staff and food are barely fit for a bland college crowd. That being said, what hurts thisbplace is not the food as much as it is the horrible service. Our server could not give a shit, and even when we chased after him and begged for service, he seemed even less interested. Did not get to experience the food at all because we were never seated. We walked in and stood for 10-15 minutes this afternoon. We were acknowledged by two ladies who appeared to be servers, both told us that a guy would be right with us. My boyfriend is currently thru hiking the Appalachian Trail, so when he hit Virginia, I went to visit him near Lexington. I Googled a bunch of spots in the Historic district and saw the menu for Macado's, which was just what we needed for dinner. There's seriously like a million sandwiches, but I got the Dietrich's Delight, which was turkey, muenster, bacon and mayo on a bagel, which in my opinion was awesome. My boyfriend, who is slowly wasting away on the trail from hiking a MARATHON everyday, got his fill with Chicken Parmesan, which he said was delicious. We got the Salsa con Queso app which was tasty. They had HUGE beers for like $3.50 on happy hour, which was the best part. We went back again for lunch the next day to watch college football and grab food, and this time he got a gigantic bacon, onion ring burger, and I got a pretzel hot dog, because why not? (Yum, fyi.) We're really laid back people, and this place is a casual, friendly place, which is exactly what we were looking for. It's pretty cheap and a great place to relax and watch the game. We're planning on going back to Lexington when we have more time to enjoy it, and we'll totally be back to Macado's. read more

What a shame. Prime location and lots of potential. Unfortunately the staff kills this place. We walked into a nearly empty bar on an early weekday afternoon - literally three people sitting at the bar. No bartender to be found. Over 5 minutes went by and two other couples came in to sit at the bar. The bartender shows up (Lisa?), checks on the existing customers and waits on the two other couples before us. Closes out another customers tab while eyeballing us from the register. Now nearly 10 minutes have gone by and no service so we left. Guess we had "Yankee" written all over our foreheads. You have plenty of other eating options in the town - suggest you avoid this place. read more

It is a sad, sad day if this is the only bar in a collegetown. Where shall I begin? How about waitresses only lamely flirting with the (old) regulars while ignoring a new customer? Or having someone leave their dustpan collections on the table unless dust and 3 differently-colored hairs on the table has become a standard condiment? How about the faux I-want-to-be-worse-than-Chevy's-"Mexican" food? Maybe the interminable wait for any service? Macado's does redeem itself with the happy hour specials, I guess, with decently fair pricing. Four dollars for a domestic pitcher isn't half bad. Great Place & Wonderful Food!! Me & my wife went there while we were on vacation in Natural Bridge VA. The outdoor seating is wonderful, New Orleans feel. I see the other reviews but my service was fantastic & will definitely go there again when we visit. The food was great & nice size portions. I hate this place. Unfortunately because it's one of the biggest places in town, it can accommodate large groups, and thus I spent a lot of time and money here (only thing that saves it from a one-star review). Almost every time I've been here I've had to wait for a table. Lots of W&L and VMI students. The wait staff is super bitchy, and I've at times waited 30 minutes after I've finished my meal to get my check, mainly because we couldn't find our waitress. Maybe this is why everyone's always waiting to get in - they aren't turning over tables. The food generally sucks. I've never put anything in my mouth here and thought "Oh, this is pretty good." The drinks are just as bad. One time someone ordered me a cinnamon drink on special that made me want to puke. While Lexington certainly needs more bars and places for students and townies to hang out in the evening, it's a real shame this sham moved in. I'd love to see someone local take over this beautiful old building and make it something really great. Fun fact: When Brian Richardson, W&L journalism prof, was a student at our fine institution, he lived upstairs. While visiting Stonewall Jackson/ Rob.E.Lee sites we got thirty and a bit hungry. It was also starting to rain and we needed to duck in some where. Our group of 4 got a high booth and ordered the Nachos Grande ( Much ado about nothing...lots of cheese whiz, or Velveeta?). and a Pitcher of beer. Our waiter was pretty accommodating! He let us have the Happy hour price a bit early, and continued to check on us. Horrible service, if I can rate this place zero stars I would, I waited for 15 minutes before anyone even acknowledged that I was there, I had to say HELLO before I got anyone to ask if I wanted anything to drink!! I really really did LOVE this place!! The ambiente was so nice - both, in and outdoors!! This is exactly what we were hoping for. It felt unique, wasn't as over-priced as all the other places on that street... and oh my god, I had the best Burger of my life there! I have to add - I am from Europe and am so picky with Burgers, since it's something that we don't eat over there a lot. No - give it a try if you travel through that area! I told everyone here in DC about it and hope that people will be the same pleased as we were (group of four people). Oh - one more thing: We didn't pay attention and the place was already closed by the time we wanted to pay. And yet nobody came and tried to kick us out or make us leave. We were visiting VA from FL and wanted to check out the Lexington area. We stopped by their little downtown area looking for food. Most of the restaurants were closed BC it was Sunday, but not Macados. We sat on the second level. Our waitress was so nice and really made our experience great. My son has a severe gluten & diary allergy but they did not have many options for him, so we improvised. He got a bacon burger no bun with fries. My hubby ordered it but accidentally said bacon "Cheese" burger. When it came out we informed our waitress, which was so apologetic even though it was our fault. They made him a new burger so quickly. I was so impressed & grateful. All of the food was great. My daughter got the kids Mac and cheese and it was top of the line- no easy Mac here. I was pretty jealous that they serve that on the kids menu. I'm happy we stopped in, we had even read the reviews on there with it only have 3-stars we were hesitant but so glad we decided to go against the wind and try it for ourselves. Love the food here. Always been happy with that! Huge menu that can sometimes be a little overwhelming, but you really can't go wrong with any of it. The restraint's atmosphere can't be beat. Built in an old mansion, much of the house's original detail are kept intact. The walls are covered with Lexington/Rockbridge County memorabilia. Very fun! The reason why I don't give it a full 5 stars is, the service is sometimes pretty slow depending on the time of day. Excellent sandwiches at reasonable prices are far overshadowed by the most predictable and consistently terrible service imaginable. I have been to this restaurant perhaps half a dozen times in the past year (2011-2012) and have only experienced service that reached the level of barely adequate once. Several weeks ago we arrived mid afternoon and were told that the computer was down and they would not be able to serve us but that we were free to have a seat and wait until ... well, I'm not sure until what, actually; probably until IBM or someone came to fix it. Apparently when there is a computer problem the wait staff and kitchen aren't smart enough to write an order on a piece of paper and take it to the kitchen to be prepared, or maybe they're all just too lazy. As we were leaving a manager or supervisor was chewing out the hostess for telling us that the computer was down and telling her they just should have seated us and let us wait. Most recently, we arrived one evening at about 8:30 p.m. and stood inside at the hostess desk for ten minutes waiting for someone to wander by and offer to seat us. Nobody came, so we just left. We will not be back. These people are unconscionable. read more

Food was tasty. Beer was wet & cold. Two entrees & 2 beers for under $30. Waitress was also the bartender so she was understandably busy on a Saturday night. Located in a charming part of town. My husband and I chose this restaurant after our walk through Lexington. We were very disappointed. The food was not good quality. We ordered the nachos and they were stale, no crunch, and they were drowned in cheese. I order the fish tacos and the taco tasted stale, as well, with little flavor. There were a great deal of flies in the restaurant, and my husband stated the bathroom was disgusting and dirty. I chose not to use it. I watched a waitress put her hand in a container of lemons and pull out two and put them in people's drinks, with no gloves. We were looking for a dog friendly place to have dinner on the way home from camping near Natural Bridge and we're surprised by how few places had outdoor seating in Lexington. Luckily we found this place which has a good sized front porch with two large round tables. Glad we did! Menu was tavern fare with an overwhelming selection of sandwiches on the menu. Two kids had Mac n cheese which was NOT out of a box, another had a hot dog, wife and I had sandwiches...all delicious. Dog just hung out and people watched (and waited for the kids to drop something). Seems like it could be a busy place with the college crowd and they don't allow reservations on weekends which complicates things if you're traveling with kids and a pup but if you can get in I'd recommend it. read more

It was ridiculous, I'd look down at my arm and there would be 3 or 4 flies resting on me. They were on my head and in my hair. I showered this day, I promise! We were in the area on vacation and stopped by for lunch. First off know that portions are large here so if you order the Macado's Club as I did you'll find it's enough for two meals. The potato salad is something made in heaven by the angels so if you enjoy good potato salad you should give it a try. We stopped in for lunch and adored sitting out on the balcony! The waitress was very sweet and although we had a slight miscommunication about my order we enjoyed our experience very much! The food was pretty darn good and hit the spot after a long morning at the safari park. If you find yourself in Lexington on a nice day, do yourself a favor and sit outside here! The fried green tomatoes were yummy and cooked perfectly and the Mac and potato salads were great. My club sandwich wasn't extraordinary but it was tasty enough. My husband did say the men's room was pretty dirty and the stairs probably haven't been vacuumed within the last month but meh. The balcony view was worth it and our server was very good. read more

Macados used to be one of my favorite places to go in Lexington, but in the last few years it is not the same. They constantly have a sign on the door looking for help, and from what I hear from the local young adults who have worked there, it's because they aren't given any hours when they are hired. There is constant turnover and the food and service has suffered. The last few times I have gone, the food was just average, and the last time it bordered on bad. My favorite sandwich used to be the Big City Jazz- turkey piled high with bacon and avocado. In the last year, the avocado has been reduced to almost nothing and the bacon (which I didn't even get on my last visit) is little to nothing and the precooked stuff like you see at Subway. My bread last time was not fresh and the fries, which are normally good, were cold and chewy. I didn't complain because we were tired and the server was new and looked petrified. I will go back sometime and try again, but I haven't been able to tell any visitors to try it out. It's just not a safe bet anymore. read more

HORRIBLE: drove 7 hours from out of state to visit Lexington for volunteer work. Decided to explore the town on the last day and have a drink. Rap music was so loud you couldn't talk to the person next to you. Drinks were incredible overpriced but expected. Over heard the bar manager bad mouthing my friend and I about our presence there to the bartender. Spent a whole lot of money there and got treated horribly for no reason. Giving one star only bc the one bartender was nice. Not a good way to attract out of towers. So if you are, avoid the bar portion. read more

Bad decision, we should have reviewed here first! Service was terrible! Mediocre food. I asked for 1/2 and 1/2 tea (1/2 sweet half unsweetened) My server never heard of it. So I asked for unsweetened and I would add sugar, she brought me sweet. We had an appetizer and a quesadilla and asked of they could both be brought out at the same time since we were sharing (party of 2). She asked us upon walking away if we would be sharing the appetizer since it was coming out first. (What just happened? ) midway through lunch she asked if I would like some more tea, I said sure ...unsweetened! Well a glass of sweet tea showed up.
