We visited the restaurant after having a great time at the drive-through zoo nearby. The service was great, and everyone was friendly. Everyone enjoyed their meal. I really don't have any complaints. Definitely will visit again if we're back in thr area.

Delicious barbecue place near the mountains in Lexington! Wonderful service very friendly staff a definite go to if you're in this area and looking for some yummy BBQ.

Jersey native and this is the second time I have chosen to stop by this place in two months on the way to North Carolina. It's a very cute little place that has great local ambiance and the service is great. Our waitress was the same person we had in December. Super sweet and never once did we have to ask for something. I got the fried Southern Catfish again with a side of mac and cheese and coleslaw. Don't forget the cornbread because it was nice and warm when we got it. The pictures below are from the first visit. Ribs, sausage plate, fried green beans. Let's just say the food is on point. I forgot to take the pictures for this trip but my daughter got the grilled PB&J with mac and cheese. My mother got the cheeseburger and my husband got his first ever Cuban panini. Everyone was happy. We got fried green beans and homemade onion rings and I couldn't finish my food. Right before we called it quits our waitress started talking about dessert. I became super curious about the homemade banana pudding because I have always wanted to try it. So I just pretended I was at Italian Xmas Eve Dinner of the Seven Fishes and I found room and damn I was glad I did. First time we were here we talked with the waitress about the fact they were trying to get more foot traffic and I told her how when we were on 81 South we saw their new sign. This place is definitely a little hidden gem that is a must to go and try. Food is on point. Service is above and beyond. You can tell that the food is made with love.

BBQ after visiting the Natural Bridge, yes please!!! Stopped by for lunch and sat inside! The ladies working were so friendly! We sat down and they grabbed us our drinks immediately, and were quick to take our food order. The food was fantastic!!! I ordered the ribs, which I was told they just took them out of the smoker!! And I got two sides, mashed potatoes and baked beans. It also come with corn bread. The ribs tasted so good and their honey BBQ sauce was a wonderful complement to the meat!! The baked beans were delicious and had pulled pork in them. I thoroughly enjoyed the mashed potatoes and cornbread too! My fiancé got a platter with pulled pork and chicken. He also got two sides Mac n cheese and broccoli. He loved their Mac n cheese!!! Stop by for some great BBQ!!! I recommend it!

My family and I were passing through from West Virginia and decided to give this place a shot and I'm glad that we did! Great food, great atmosphere and great service!

As a rule, I try to avoid fast food and corporate chain restaurants. This leads me to small restaurants and roadside BBQ joints everywhere I travel. I rolled into Foothill Momma's BBQ while driving through Lexington, Virginia. As the last section of a strip mall, it didn't seem like a BBQ joint. Clean and well lit with ample parking doesn't feel very old-school. I looked over the menu while the blues played in the background. All that changed when the appetizer arrived. Hand cut potato chips were crisp and hidden under a mountain of cheese, pickled candy jalapeños, sauce, and real deal smoked Pulled pork. Main course was ribs, more pulled pork, garlic smashed potatoes, Mac and cheese, baked beans, and hand cut fries. (3 people in the party and we traded sides.) Portions were big. The sides were homemade and delicious. But any BBQ is measured by it's smoked meats. Mommas's leaves no doubt that they are authentic BBQ. The ribs pulled clean off the bone with great smoke flavor, the pulled pork was tender and flavorful, and the chicken breasts were juicy. If you stop by Foothill Momma's you owe yourself a dessert. The carrot cake was very good, but they have an amazing taste in my Peanut Butter Cream Pie. I've eaten way too many pies in my life, but this is the best peanut butter pie that I've had. The bill was average for a BBQ joint. The great care and generous portions make it a great value. This BBQ. Joint needs to be on your list if you're ever in the Lexington area.

I love barbecue so whenever we travel I alike to find these non-chain barbecue options. This place did not disappoint! Everything was delicious, the staff was friendly and attentive and it was VERY clean. Will definitely stop here again when traveling this way again!

Came in town from Jersey and wanted BBQ, glad I stopped here. Everyone was friendly and the food was on point, they put a few sauces out as condiments. Vinegar based sauce as well as tomato based. Honey as well as a sweet spicy sauce. The portions are a little small but oh so good !! I had collard greens and mac n cheese. Probably best i have had. Ribs were nicely done but would like more.

Pulled pork is awesome. BBQ Nachos with cowboy candy are great. Beware the ribs...they aren't KC, Texas, or any other style I know of.

The rooms were perfectly clean, and lovingly furnished, each one different in size and looks. But we heard and smelled the kitchen under our beautiful room with the red wallpaper. If you do not like train sounds , better do not take this room but take a room overlooking the front of the house with its impressing, well taken care of oak tree. Also, be aware that the mattress in the red room is very soft. The overnight price was fine, but all the extras chosen by us, like food, wine, and flowers were rather pricey. We would like to return to this friendly BnB - but would choose a firmer mattress - we are sure the charming owners could help us choose!

The design is pretty ornamental, in keeping with the time period of the house (late 1800s). I had the Havilah Room, done in Persian blue with a burgundy area rug. The bed was wonderfully comfortable, with a perfect mattress and high-quality linens. There's a balcony on the front of the house that all the guest rooms have access to. The first-floor restaurant will send up dinner if you just call down and request it. I was in the mood for a steak and they had a terrific ribeye available the night I was there. Simply seasoned with salt and pepper and perfectly grilled, with flavorful garlic mashed potatoes, it made a satisfying dinner. There's plenty of complimentary parking right onsite and the Appomattox National Park is less than ten minutes away by car. The innkeepers here know what they are doing and everything runs very smoothly, for a reasonable price.

The cocktail and mocktails were flavorful and well priced. Our waiter was great. Very knowledgeable about the menu, town and ingredients. We started with the Chicken Liver pate. This was well prepared, although I hate when a restaurant provides an odd number of toasts for two people. We asked for an extra piece and thought it was funny that they gave us exactly one. FYI- it comes with several accoutrements which were tasty, but the mustard was really the most satisfying. My wife had the brisket, which I would call a must have. Fantastic Asian spices, fried rice ball and Kimchi. Just an explosion of flavors. I was glad she shared. (This is uncommon) I had the pork chop and it was really pretty. Unfortunately, it lacked flavor and I had to carve off the fat which made up about 1/3rd of the chop. The bone was the other third...so it turned out to be a thick but modest cut. That said, it was on a lovely bed of mash and some of the best blue and white carrots I ever had. We finished with the carrot cake. (All of the desserts are made onsite.) which we learned was gluten free. Honestly if it was marked GF I wouldn't have ordered it. Anyway, when it arrived I thought we received the wrong thing. It looked like a decorative cliff bar. Once we took a bite we were blown away by the flavors and texture. It was delicious. Such a great experience. We were near the kitchen, so we got to see the head chef get orders out. There were some highs and lows, but the overall experience was really nice.

We stopped in Thursday February 5, 2026. The cozy space, complete with a locally painted on the wall, gives it a warm, welcoming feel. In speaking with the matrade we learned the name of the restaurant comes from the Native American word that has become Shenandoah. After 20 years in business it's clear this place has deep local roots. The staff was friendly and attentive. Kyle, our waiter, did a great job and worked seamlessly with his teammates to make the experience memorable. We started with cocktails -- my wife had the Sage Advice and I had a classic Manhattan. Proper cocktails for sure! The crème brûléed cornbread and sweet potato bisque were standout starters. Probably could have stopped eating after those starters...For mains, my wife loved the pork loin and I enjoyed the pan-seared trout. We finished with the banana mousse, which was absolutely amazing! Great food, great service, great atmosphere. Highly recommend if you're passing through Staunton. definitely worth the stop.

Every time I dine at this restaurant I have a memorable dining experience. One of my favorite items…read moreon their summer menu is their R&R Hanger Steak. A Hanger steak is a long, flat, flavorful cut reminiscent of flank steak and skirt steak, only more tender. In the US, hanger steak is most commonly called "hanging tender" or "butcher's steak." It gets the latter nickname because it was historically a "secret" cut that butchers would keep for themselves rather than sell to the public. Other names you might see on menus for this cut are Hanging tenderloin and Bistro steak. All that I know is that it's the best piece of meat that I have ever eaten and it has been at this restaurant. So that was the main reason I came to dine here today and my expectations were completely fulfilled. When I arrived, I was greeted by a friendly, young lady with the warm welcoming of a regular guest. She happily took me to the table I had requested when I made my reservation online. It was a table facing the bar with their open kitchen on the right of me. I like to watch the bartenders and chefs in action as they create their amazing drinks and culinary masterpieces. Immediately after I was seated my server Tim came by with the usual familiar greeting, welcoming me once again for returning to dine there and thanking me for being such a loyal customer. I had the usual cold water and this time started off with one of their Butterfly Kisses Mocktails. It both looked and tasted amazing. For appetizer I had their VA Oyster Wraps, followed by their special salad of the day. And for the main entrée I had their R&R Hanger Steak. Everything was timed appropriately and was served at the right timing. I invite you to view my photographs accompanying this review to get a better sense of the place and the high-quality of their food and drinks. For dessert I had my favorite, their Dark Chocolate Panna Cotta. What a way to end a spectacular dinner. I highly recommend this restaurant for an exceptional fine dining experience.

While The River and Rail has many things going for it: great location, adorable atmosphere, fancy…read moreand delicious cocktails and delicious food, one thing they don't have going for them is their ability to stay true to their operating hours. My friend and I walked in at 9 o'clock EXACTLY on a Thursday night to have a drink. The sign on the door said they were open until 10:00. There were 4 or 5 tables seated, enjoying dinner and cocktails. 5 or 6 people at the bar. There was no one to start with at the actual hostess stand and servers saw us standing at the door but did not approach us even though there was an hour left on their operating time. So we walked directly to the bar and sat down. We had just eaten at Fork in the Alley so all we wanted was one drink and we figured an hour was plenty of time to get that done. The first thing the bartender said to us was "The kitchen is closed." Not "hello" or "Hey what can I get you?" but the kitchen is closed. I said "oh I'm sorry I thought you closed at 10:00." He said "well, that's up for debate we were actually discussing that right now. We're basically closed but you can have a drink because it's not like the rest of these people are going anywhere." What do you mean that's up for discussion? Your hours say you're open till 10 o'clock, it's 9 o'clock I have an hour to eat and have drinks! The other bartender, or perhaps he was only a bar back, gave us a very disapproving look. I get it, I work in the food service industry. I'm a server at a 4 diamond restaurant, and I hate when people walk in minutes before we close and want to sit down. But if we post that we're open until 10 and you walk in at 9:45 I'm going to serve you and treat you like anyone else that walked in at 6:00 because it's your tips that pay my bills and put food on my table. It's definitely not the hourly wage I get from my employer! And as a server I never walk into a restaurant with less than 30 minutes to close. And it's more like an hour if I'm looking to eat a meal. I know you want to go home. When it's the end of the night and I'm at work, so do I! But there's an hour left and I wanted one drink. That's it! We continued to get disappointed looks from a few other employees even though we weren't the last people in the place. I told my friend (it's 9:45 at this point) that we obviously need to go since servers are standing around looking at us like we've got the plague. We paid our bill and promptly left. Two couples still at the bar. It's 9:59 right now as I'm writing this at home (you're still technically open btw) but I left feeling like I had stayed hours past your closing time. It's a real shame because we really enjoyed our drinks! They were super yummy! And I'm always getting asked by guests where's a good place for a late night cocktail and I used to recommend The River and Rail right along with Lucky's because we had a shuttle that would take guests out, but after tonight I won't be doing that anymore. Because there's nothing worse than feeling unwelcome at a restaurant that is still open.
