First time trying Kenney's and it was pretty decent. We order 2 burgers (basically regular burgers with some kind of sauce on them) and fries. The burgers were great had a sweet taste with sauce. The fries were just right, not over or under cooked, and the salt amount was just right. The staff were ok, nothing to report good or bad. The ambiance was great felt just like a mom and pap dinner. Only complaint was they could maintain the building better. But is clean and safe. Overall, very good and definitely worth a stop. read more

Visited Kenney's while traveling from Washington D.C. to North Carolina. It was easy enough to get to off of 81 and equally as easy to get back to 81 after your meal. It was a Friday at lunchtime and there was almost a line out the door. The line moved relatively quickly. I'll say it is kinda hard to see the whole menu from the far right side of the counter where you place your order. The order process itself is quick and easy then grab a seat and wait for your order to be called. This is one of those places where they shout your whole order to the restaurant when it is ready so...just be aware. LOL I got a snack pak with mac and cheese and a hot dog with chili and mustard. The hot dog was pretty basic but good. Chili was slightly sweet and the bun was super soft. In the snack pack, I got a wing and a big thigh, mac and cheese, and a biscuit with honey. The mac and cheese was ok. This is runny mac and I prefer mac that holds its shape a bit more. Also, the side serving is pretty small. The biscuit is not what I'd typically call a biscuit but it was good especially with the provided honey. The meal so far would just be three stars but the fried chicken took this up a whole extra star. That's great fried chicken. Incredibly well-seasoned and SO crispy. I will definitely be getting Kenney's next time I'm passing through Lexington. read more

Not sure how I haven't reviewed this place before. It is the second best fried chicken in Virginia. It is my go to place for chicken in bulk for house parties and gatherings. While I agree it's not fast, you get the personal touch, and orders are held up a little more behind the counter -- depending on how complicated it is. QUALITY We had a large and varied order. This place is a local well kept secret. If you didn't know it was here you would never find it. The place isn't much to look at but it was full of locals ordering lunch. The prices are quit reasonable. This place is not fine dining, but the food is usually cooked fresh, so it is hot and has great flavor. It is fast food but don't go there in a hurry because you will wait for your food. It beats the hell out of any of the fast food chains and the staff is always friendly and helpful. We never it inside but they have the best fried chicken in our area. Anytime we have company come in to stay for a few days we always pick up their fried chicken for one of the meals. The serving size was ridiculously small, it's says 1 big & 1 small piece with their 2pc, it was a leg & a thigh, I would've thought for the price it would've been a breast. This is a little run down, but it's clean, and the food is very good. This is a 60's and 70's burger joint. If you grew up with one you know. I had the Kenney Burger which is basically a hamburger that has been dipped in their special sauce after the burger has been cooked. It's a good burger only $1.95 and it really reminds you of a burger dipped in something similar to manwich sauce. The hot dog comes with chili, mustard, and onions. I absolutely love hot dogs and get one at any restaurant that serves them. The chili sauce is meat only (no beans) and is on point, only $1.99. Fries are thick crinkle cuts, saw them cooking onion rings definitely getting those next time. Someone at table next to me had ordered fried chicken and it looked delicious. Lousy customer management skills; they would do well to invest in a rope line. As it stands now, be prepared for some chaos if they are busy. An altercation with another customer in line left a very bad taste in my mouth. I think everybody around me was embarrassed. The poor cashier was pulling a Sgt. I am a fried chicken junky.. popeyes, KFC, Mrs. Winners, Churches, Pollo Campero, Home made, hi brow, low brow, i don't care... i love it! And Kenney's is LEGIT Y'all! It's most like KFC original recipe.. Moist and tender, Super flavorful, great herbacious flavor.. man i can't say enough good things about it. The sides were mediocre, food service fries and onion rings, the cole slaw was really good, cold and sweet with a light mayo dressing. Apparently Kenney's is famnous for their "Sauce" burger, so i had to get one too.. If you can imagine a sloppy joe hamburger (the size of a McDonalds regular hamburger) you are pretty much in the ball park.. delicious, but no match for the exquisite fried chickeny goodness. Wow this is some yummy chicken! I have a thing about fried chicken on road trips, I have to have fried chicken anytime I'm driving more than a couple of hours. Luckily for us the stars aligned that my husband was getting really hungry as we approached Lexington. I quickly scanned the available restaurants on Yelp and the high rating for Kenney's jumped out at me. After clicking on it, the fateful words "FRIED CHICKEN" in the first review were a sign from above. We headed that way, mind you I thought Google Maps was playing an evil joke on me as I turned onto the road where it was supposed to be. Dangit, got my hopes all up for fried chicken and here we are lost in the backwoods of Lexington! I turned to the left into a parking lot so I could stop and consult my phone, and there up at the top of the hill was the oldest, most beat-up looking neon diner sign that you could just barely make out the faded word "Kenney's" on. Aha! In we go and place our order then wait in the old formica booths. Food arrives and holy smokes, I am in fried chicken heaven! This is the stuff here. The fried biscuits were a nice surprise, bad for your coronary arteries, but hell, you're already eating deep-fried meat, who cares? Slaw was fresh, mac 'n' cheese and green beans as expected. Bad: don't go near the restrooms if you want to keep your appetite, not because they are dirty (they are run-down, but clean) but the sewage drain smell back there? Whooo EEE! If it lunch time you may want to call in your order to be picked up. It gets slammed and can take a while to get your food. Pretty damn good for a place that we stumbled into offer route 81 in southwestern Virginia. Considering that the other options are Taco Bell, sheets, and the like, this place is a hidden gem.
