Visited Kenney's while traveling from Washington D.C. to North Carolina. It was easy enough to get to off of 81 and equally as easy to get back to 81 after your meal. It was a Friday at lunchtime and there was almost a line out the door. The line moved relatively quickly. I'll say it is kinda hard to see the whole menu from the far right side of the counter where you place your order. The order process itself is quick and easy then grab a seat and wait for your order to be called. This is one of those places where they shout your whole order to the restaurant when it is ready so...just be aware. LOL I got a snack pak with mac and cheese and a hot dog with chili and mustard. The hot dog was pretty basic but good. Chili was slightly sweet and the bun was super soft. In the snack pack, I got a wing and a big thigh, mac and cheese, and a biscuit with honey. The mac and cheese was ok. This is runny mac and I prefer mac that holds its shape a bit more. Also, the side serving is pretty small. The biscuit is not what I'd typically call a biscuit but it was good especially with the provided honey. The meal so far would just be three stars but the fried chicken took this up a whole extra star. That's great fried chicken. Incredibly well-seasoned and SO crispy. I will definitely be getting Kenney's next time I'm passing through Lexington.

This place is a local well kept secret. If you didn't know it was here you would never find it. The place isn't much to look at but it was full of locals ordering lunch. The prices are quit reasonable. This place is not fine dining, but the food is usually cooked fresh, so it is hot and has great flavor. It is fast food but don't go there in a hurry because you will wait for your food. It beats the hell out of any of the fast food chains and the staff is always friendly and helpful. If you are passing through try the place, and if you are looking for a unique piece of history to eat at y look no further. Buy local cause you won't be sorry.

Fried Chicken was tasty. I would have like it a little more crispy. The biscuits look good, the sides were too small. Overall all 4 stars.

This restaurant is located in an industrial area. The people are great, the food was very good, and I would try again.

The chicken was fantastic. Cooked to perfection. Had fries and potato salad. The white meat was moist and tender. Very Good!

All about the fried chicken for me! Love getting chicken out so I don't have to make it. A chocolate shake to go with it is perfect.

Hardens - Salad with chicken

Hardens

O.M.G. This place is simply divine. Owned/run by a local husband/wife who are both super cool…read morepeople. No reservations (like most places in town) so there might be a bit of a wait on busy nights -- but soooo worth the wait! The house specialty cocktails are all great (LOVE "Leaving Lex Vegas") -- especially if you are lucky enough to get the husband as your bartender! The tuna tostada app with matcha salsa was insanely good - the blend of flavors and textures was mind-blowingly good. Wedge salad with fried chicken and homemade ranch rocked! Lamb with pistachios was superb. This place is a true local gem!!

I visited Hardens with a group of people who all ordered several different things from the menu…read more Luckily, these people also didn't mind sharing food, so I got to taste a lot of things. The ahi tuna tostada blew everything out of the water. I am not even a big ahi fan, but this dish converted me. The fish was tender and was like biting into a marinated gum drop, if that makes sense. Your teeth just sink into it. Then there's the crunch from the fried tortilla tostada, and crunch from the radish slices and daikon strips. It's a textural experience, for sure. The next best bite was the fried Brussels sprouts, which were crispy on the edges and dressed with a dijon-rum glaze and studded with sweet rum cherries and candied pecans. Lots of rum happening in this dish, but you can't taste the alcohol -- mostly just the sweetness from the fruit and syrup. One order is a big enough appetizer for four people. Other notable appetizers were the Thai wings (covered in sweet chili sauce, chili oil, shallot, green onion and cilantro) and the mac and cheese, which is served in a small cast iron pan. Circling back to the ahi: Hardens has an ahi sandwich on the menu, and in my opinion, it's not as good as the ahi tostada. The tenderness of the ahi gets lost within the big roll they use for the sandwich. If you love ahi and really want to taste it, get the ahi on a tostada. The restaurant itself is nice, dark and open. It got really loud when we were there and every table was occupied. Everyone is basically sitting all in one room, so the sound carries easily here.

There is also a ready to bake option for those eating at home. They also kindly provided us sets of utensils and paper plates for our meal. We got two family meals: Pork carnitas and blackened chicken penne pasta. The pork carnitas meal came with tortilla, rice, lettuce, pico, cheese, sour cream and carnitas. The pork was perfectly cooked- extremely flavorful and juicy. The meal for 2 came with 6 tortillas. The portion sizes are good for the price. The blackened chicken penne pasta was AMAZING! So flavorful and filled with delicious blackened chicken. The pasta came with a salad. This pasta dish for 2 was on the pricier side ($40). Both meals were delicious. The complimentary tomato basil bread was also great!

We decided to give it another try but this time will also be our last. We ordered the chicken and dumplings. What we got was 2 big containers of chicken broth with little scraps of chicken floating in it. It was like lousy chicken soup. The dumplings were not bad but when I found that some of the "chicken" was skin and even a bone I was disgusted. There was not even a half chicken breast total in the 2 orders. I don't know who is really doing the cooking for this takeout service but it is not good.

It's in Lexington, home of VMI, and the shop itself is diagonal from a post office built in 1911 with large columns lining its edifice. Sometimes, when college students leave great reviews, that means good food that isn't too expensive. True here, especially for what you get: generous servings on amazing bakery breads. I had the "Sorry Charlie" on a slice of focaccia -- topped with tomato slices and melted cheese and a satisfyingly crunchy, warm crust, with a simple but nicely refreshing black bean and corn salad. Dessert treats are also worth a splurge. The people couldn't be friendlier with customers of all ages enjoying themselves. (And they have a coffee bar. And a "speakeasy"!)

I also got The Yardbird sandwich after the server recommended it. It's basically just chicken salad and lettuce between a ciabatta roll, but it was simple and great. And what the heck: I can't visit a bakery that has multiple sweets without getting one. I also listened to the advice of the server when she recommended the orange scone. She was right again! It was tender and tasted like a Froot Loop. Blue Sky is located on the corner of a busy street. There are lots of tables, but if you can, sit at the bar that looks out onto the street to see the hustling and bustling college town.
