A soup and sandwich joint with lots of baked goods -- that's Blue Sky. It was a cold and drizzly day when I visited, and a bowl of butternut squash soup was the perfect thing. I also got The Yardbird sandwich after the server recommended it. It's basically just chicken salad and lettuce between a ciabatta roll, but it was simple and great. And what the heck: I can't visit a bakery that has multiple sweets without getting one. I also listened to the advice of the server when she recommended the orange scone. She was right again! It was tender and tasted like a Froot Loop. Blue Sky is located on the corner of a busy street. Unplanned but fortunate lunch stop on a road trip from NoVA to NOLA. If you're traveling I-81, it's just 5 or so miles down Rt. 11, which snakes back and forth across '81, so it's not really a "detour". It's in Lexington, home of VMI, and the shop itself is diagonal from a post office built in 1911 with large columns lining its edifice. Sometimes, when college students leave great reviews, that means good food that isn't too expensive. True here, especially for what you get: generous servings on amazing bakery breads. I had the "Sorry Charlie" on a slice of focaccia -- topped with tomato slices and melted cheese and a satisfyingly crunchy, warm crust, with a simple but nicely refreshing black bean and corn salad. My wife and I were recently in Lexington, VA and found a very nice bakery and had lunch there. Their menu is full of the most delightful sandwiches, the soups are also delicious from the very first spoonful. Their trademark sandwiches are made from an old recipe for Focaccia bread. All of their desserts in the bakery are delicious also. We even had to take some of the bread home with us. If you are in the area visiting or a resident don't pass up the opportunity to stop it and try a sandwich with some sort of dessert. The sweet tea is also very good. Yummy read more

We have had many great meals at this restaurant. Unfortunately our lunch today was not one of them. My salad was fine, but my husband ordered a sandwich and side salad, and easily half of his salad greens were rotten and slimy, and when the server carried our plates over, her ungloved thumb was on his sandwich. She was only wearing one glove for some reason, even when we saw her cooking. It was a disappointment to say the least. Blue Sky is agreat casual lunch spot on the fringe of the VMI Campus. This lunch one spot is also billed as a bakery but we were interested in sandwiches and soup. On the walk up to the restaurant one of our friends were saying how they enjoyed gazpacho. After we got our table and looked at the menu we were all pleased to see gazpacho as one of the soups. I went up to the counter and put in our order: gazpacho, tuna sandwich, veggie melt, avocado toast and Greek salad. The gazpacho is very pleasant with a nice tomato flavor, chunks of cucumber, and a mild flavor. However my only recommendation was to tone down the sweetness a bit. The tuna salad sandwich was just perfect. The tuna had a great flavor. It was a simple sandwich, consisting of only tuna and a nice slab of lettuce. My wife enjoyed her veggie melt, and avocado toast got high raves as well.In summary, the food at blue sky is fresh and the sandwiches and soups are expertly prepared. Now, I love sweets. There are few desserts in this world that can best me, and this week I met one of those at Blue Sky - the Buckeye cake. A thick, fudgy, brownie-like cake layer, topped with a confection not unlike the peanut butter inside a peanut butter cup, all covered in chocolate. Someone hold me. Five bites, and I was unable to go on! Fortunately, the spouse stepped in and took up the gauntlet, vanquishing the pastry. GLORIOUS. The broccoli-cheese soup was one of the best I've ever had outside my own kitchen, the vegetable foccacia put pizza to shame, and the pimento cheese sandwich was Southern quality. A Greek salad with plenty of feta, olives, and mixed greens completed the meal to perfection; everything was fresh and delicious. Prices? Let's just say you couldn't get one of those bone-dry, stale-pile-of-frosting, trendy cupcakes you find at 'boutique' bakeries for the price of that monumental slab of cake! Vegetarian options aren't plentiful but the ones they have greatly outdo the usual limp iceberg salad and sad cheese sandwiches that are usually pawned off on meatless eaters in many cafe situations, with plenty of filling choices for the meat-eating crowd as well. The little bakery itself is charmingly shabby-chic, with very friendly staff and a menu which, though certainly not haute-cuisine-creative, takes the usual soda counter standards and makes them a step above the rest. Traveling here from the West (Arizona), so this is our first time here-- unfortunately, we probably won't be in Virginia again; if we could, we'd come to the Blue Sky EVERDAY! Wowzers! Blue Sky Bakery was a perfect gem hidden in a small town. A friend who went to W&L suggested I stop by and try this small bakery/cafe on my way to a business trip. I am so glad I did! On her suggestion, I tried the open face chicken salad melt, which is a HEAPING portion of chicken salad on focaccia with a slice of tomato and a slice of cheese, all warmed and served with chips or bean salad. I'm not an avid chicken salad fan, but this sandwich made me want to be! It was sweet (but not too sweet) on the most delicious, presumably homemade, bread. I devoured this sandwich in no time and wished I had room for a second. I barely had room for the cashew brownie I also got -- but managed to enjoy it throughout the day. The base (fudge brownie) is rich but goes well with the saltiness of the nut butter. Perhaps even better than the delicious sandwich was the kind, warm service. The group of cafe workers were so warm-hearted and clearly knew so many of the people who came in, greeting them with hugs and friendly greetings. If I lived anywhere near Blue Sky, I would most certainly be a regular. For now, I'll have to be okay with getting another sandwich on the way out of town for my lunch tomorrow. read more

Blue Sky is only minutes away from W&L university. We ordered by phone and was able to pick up before our school tour. The BLT sandwich with avocado spread and blue sky grilled cheese sandwich were just made right with fresh bread and ingredients. We came when the soup of the day was minestrone, which was loaded with veggies, pasta, and beans- which was fantastic. Blue Sky Bakery is a cute little place in a quaint little town. On a suggestion from a Washington & Lee alum, I headed over here with my girlfriend for a bit of lunch. The place is a bakery obviously, and the staff were hard at work! As I do love freshness for lunch, I ordered a sandwich with some chips - I got a med veggie sandwich. The cashier accidentally double charged me and for my "troubles" gave me a free chocolate chip cookie! What a nice surprise...and delicious too. The food was juicy and fresh and the seating was old school living room-like where you have chairs and tables and couches that might look like a bunch of dorm rooms combined. It's a nice look and makes the place feel homey. If you're ever in the little town of Lexington I'd head over to Blue Sky for sure. read more
