We stopped in at the Dogwood Cafe for a late lunch while traveling home on US 29. It's a local place in a shopping mall serving very good local fare. When we arrived we noticed a tastefully decorated dining room and were seated promptly. They have some lunch specials and a full menu. You'll find something you like. We ordered off the lunch menu. My wife had the chicken wrap and loved it! I had the cheesesteak. I grew up outside of Philadelphia and cheesesteak purists would be unhappy with this sandwich. I thought it was very good. The sandwich comes with steak, Swiss cheese, onions and mayonnaise. I asked for peppers and they only had jalapeños. They were a very good addition to the sandwich. This isn't a cheesesteak per se, but it's a very good steak sandwich. We'll be back when we travel US 29. read more

This restaurant is one of the best we have here in Amherst, food is good, and belive me you won't leave Hungary the prices are the best. You can eat real food, clean place prices are right. Not like McDonald's where it takes 25 to 28 dollars to eat for two people. If I'm going to pay that price I'll eat at Dogwood. GREAT PLACE. read more

We started out down the road at The Filling Station and wasn't impose impressed. Called The dogwood cafe and decided to give it a try. What a great spot!!! It front doesn't look like much from the outside but what a wonderful surprise inside!!!! Our waitresses name is Keiana and she was LOVELY!!! The food was so good! Wonderful gem in Amherst. Clam strips hush puppies and great service. What more can you ask for?

Good, decent down home cooking with fast and friendly service and even better prices. Seems to be popular with locals and both the server and the cook (maybe also owner?) were chatty and amiable. The country fried steak was tender and crispy, the mashed potatoes were great with brown gravy, and the fried okra was perfectly cooked. Restaurant was also homey and clean. If you're ever passing through Amherst and want a solid lunch/ early dinner I highly recommend stopping in. I wish I lived in town so I could eat here again but I'll definitely be keeping it in mind if I'm ever in the area again. read more

Visiting the area of a tour of Sweet Briar College. We decided to try this spot for a local lunch choice. It was unclear if we were meant to seat ourselves, but we did. We were greeted as we sat down by a friendly, but busy server. She pointed out their lunch menu and took our drink order. They have a large menu, but the lunch special menu isn't as extensive though it is cheap, $6.40. I ordered the Krabby sandwich with fried okra, thinking it would be like a crab cake. My daughter is a vegetarian so she ordered their vegetable platter which let her get 4 sides as her meal for $5.99. Our food came shortly, and I was immediately sure that I wasn't going to eat my sandwich. It was not what I was expecting and didn't taste good at all. I didn't send it back, because I thought I'd just eat my okra and call it a learning experience. The okra was fried fine, but lacked any seasoning at all. I grew up in Georgia, and fried okra is a favorite - so I know it should be seasoned. Her vegetable platter was okay. The portions were generous but the taste was bland. Her baked beans tasted like they came right out of the can and her green beans had zero salt. The fries were undercooked and lacked seasoning. In short, should she choose SBC as her college this isn't a spot we will be visiting when we visit her. Very disappointing. read more

Tucked in a strip mall, this little jewel of down home Southern style cooking is worth a drive to visit. My mom and I got there in time for the lunch special, which is an entree, two sides and a drink for $7.15! I got flounder with fries, hush puppies and macaroni and cheese. Mom got country style steak witnessed potatoes and gravy and coleslaw. I hardly touched my fries, but devoured the perfectly cooked flounder, home made style mac and cheese and yummy little busy puppies. Mom made me try her coleslaw and I'm glad she did: fresh and delicious. The portions were such that Mom took some home in a container, and she vowed that the restaurant 's owner added some more country steak and mashed potatoes to the container! The place is tastefully decorated, the server smiling and pleasant the food served quickly and accurately. I honestly couldn't ask for more. We'll be back! read more

I have been to the Dogwood Cafe between 3 and 5 times with my family and children. The food is okay, and the prices are okay too. But yesterday, 1/20/19, there was an incident at the Cafe and because of this I am no longer comfortable eating there. What I assume to be the owner of the cafe was standing over a group of customers holding court loudly about the furloughed workers affected by the shutdown. The owner was attempting to explain how the furloughed worker's jobs were of the variety that the public could really do without, and how they are overpaid and an example of government waste. Everyone in the restaurant could hear him.He indicated he could do without the mail every day, and maybe the National Zoo could be open only a couple days a week as well. At this point I spoke up and said that I was a worker affected by the shutdown, that I was a firefighter, and that important training was also being impacted. He then said to me, in front of my kids, that maybe my job was important to me but that doesn't mean it's important to everyone. My family takes on significant sacrifice to support my career, which requires a lot of time away from home. They also supported this sacrifice when I was in the military. We believe my job is important. Now, all politics aside, my family of 4 were eating in his restaurant. It doesn't take a business degree to understand that it's probably not good business to insult customers and their families, although I do have a business degree. It's a shame that this had to occur in our small community. read more

The food here is amazing and the staff is pleasant! The waitress would engage in conversation and check on how our food was. She also kept our drinks filled when they got low. The food that was brought out was hot and accurate to what we ordered. This was also not an extended period of time to receive our food. Our food came out quickly and hot, everyone was pleasant even with the small rush that was currently going on. This restaurant is trying to offer cheap, clean, friendly food in a convenient location - and they nail it. It's right next to the Amherst DMV office and in the same strip as the Food Lion - not too far off Highway 29. The service was very friendly, the food well prepared and the place very clean. There hasn't been a large amount of capital investment in ambiance, and yes the bathroom was plain - but clean! That's all these folks are trying to do, and it's done well. I think the low-star reviewers were having a cranky day and had expectations too high. Our burgers were tasty! read more

Nice, clean, pleasant local cafe serving standard sandwiches and platters. Very reasonable. On Rt 60 in the far end of the Food Lion shopping center. Locals seem to like it. Good service. read more
