We were tucked in down near Devils Backbone Brewing Company, enjoying the kind of getaway folks put on postcards. My coffee, however, was less postcard and more field exercise--Army strong, boiled on a camp stove, poured out of a percolator that's likely seen more campaigns than I have. My wife took one sip and gave me that look... the one that says, "I love you, but this is unacceptable." So we broke camp early and pointed ourselves back toward civilization. About three miles down the road she spotted Belties. Now I've driven past that place more times than I can count, back when it looked like an old house that had just given up on things. But somebody got hold of it and turned that sow's ear into something you'd be proud to show company. We pulled in, and right off the bat--you could tell--they knew what they were doing. Service was quick, friendly, no fuss. The kind of place where nobody's trying too hard, which is usually when things turn out just right. The food? Lord have mercy. Every bit of it. And the atmosphere--well, it had character without trying to beat you over the head with it. That's a rare combination these days. Most places either feel like a museum or a storage unit. Located in Nellysford, VA on the increasingly famous Rt 151, Belties is about the only place you can find breakfast food outside your own kitchen. Being near Wintergreen Resort it draws a diverse crowd of tourists and locals, and the prices reflect that. The day we visited (Sunday at noon) there was a steady flow of guests. The line would get long but diminish quickly. The staff was super friendly and brought the food out quickly. The menu includes biscuit and pastry centered creations. The biscuits are huge and flaky. The pastry I tried was also delicious. The atmosphere they are going for is farm chic. The downside is it all comes off a little contrived. A pen with 4 Scottish Beltie cows and a small barn in the back by the parking, but a glance to the left you see not a rolling farm, but a standard ranch style house that must endure the constant traffic. The food is good, but not $13 chicken biscuit good. I ordered the Whoa Nelly ( biscuit with fried chicken, fried tomato, pimento cheese, and habanero jam). Thankfully I got the jam on the side bc it was a bit too spicy for me. I also fear that it would have been the only thing I would have tasted. The biscuit was good as was the chicken, but I could not taste the tomato or the pimento cheese at all. If I had added that jam it would have overwhelmed everything. The Chicken Pot Pie featuring a biscuit as the crust was a good choice. A crusty biscuit resting atop a rich creamy chicken and veg filling. We visited on a Saturday morning and the place was really busy. They have inside seating, patio seating and you can also eat at picnic tables in the yard by the cows. You stand in line to order food right when you come in the door. They give you a buzzer that will buzz for food and coffee orders. They also call your name before buzzing and will deliver food to you once you tell them who you are after they call your name. They have a self serve complimentary water dispenser but it goes fast and we had to ask for it to be refilled. The drinks and food were pretty quick and we were able to find a table inside the cute farmhouse cafe. I noticed they had books on a hearth of the fireplace for kids to keep entertained while there. I really enjoyed my woah Nelly with the bacon habanero jam and pimento cheese. My son had the biscuits and gravy and I liked the scallions it had in there. My husband had a double order of egg bites that he couldn't finish. I would definitely return again. We probably spent about $50 for the three of us. The mocha coffee was great and they had oat milk as an option for my hubbies matcha latte We of course visited the cows and could see more inside. These biscuits are absolutely fantastic. Stopped here on our way home from Wintergreen Ski Resort and it was a highlight of the entire trip. I also got side of hashbrown patties. For drinks I got an iced dirty chai with almond milk and my sister did a large skim latte with 2 shots of vanilla. All of it was really good! The service was absolutely amazing. Everybody had a great attitude and really helpful and very nice and kind. The food was absolutely amazing. But this is a melt near your mouth butter biscuit. I had the Nelson which is a biscuit with chicken, hot honey mayonnaise and pickles. You can tell how much the chicken was that they cooked it. We had the pumpkin danish, and that was clearly fresh made crispy crust with fresh pumpkin. The ambience of the place is very cool laid-back cozy comfortable. This is a great new addition to Nellysford. My family enjoyed an outing here recently and loved the food - we appreciated the vegan waffle option. The coffee was also excellent. What a wonderful surprise! It's been a while since I've been to the Nellysford area, and my friends went here for brunch based on the positive Yelp reviews. What I didn't realize is not only is the food delicious, but there are free range chickens and actual Belties /cows out in the barn that you can visit. My friends had The Whoa Nellie and loved it. I had the salad with chicken added. Delicious! We opted to sit outside and were treated to visits from the free-ranging chickens, who are so pretty and very friendly. My first visiting Beltie's was on Saturday, August 9th, 2025. A beautiful farmhouse cafe with a huge front porch and amazing freshly made sandwiches and pastries. I got the Woah Nelly which was habernero jam, fried green tomatoes, chicken, arugula, and pimento cheese - it was fantastic!! The service was pretty quick given they were completely slammed. The Belties Calloway cows, the restaurant mascots are a must see. There is even an option to order while driving through the barn. It's a beautiful drive as well over to Belties. Got to meet one of the owners John and the staff were super friendly. It's nice the Toney being your order to you unlike every coffee shop. It was busy but the service was fast. Pros and cons from an honest reviewer: Pros There's no denying it, the place that took a year to build is aesthetically beautiful. There's ample seating. The employees are courteous, and ample. The location needed a place to get together over a coffee and or breakfast that is convenient. Cons The layout is definitely problematic if they do good business. I don't think a lot of forethought went into the What If's. Since it's new they are drawing a lot of customers. The place was packed when we went--and so was the parking lot. Here's a few big problems with that. You come around the back of the building to the parking lot and pull in looking for an open spot-you drive to the end nearest the building only to find it's full. Inconvenient but not the biggest issue. The big issue is there's nowhere to turn around. At the end there's two handicap spots to the right and a one-way drive-through on the left that brings cars through the parking lot to exit. You face that traffic trying to turn around. In addition the building is on the other side of that one-way exit which means adults and children must walk out of the building and through the exiting drive-through traffic to cross over back into the parking lot. The outdoor large and lovely dining porch has no outdoor exit back to the parking lot so customers must enter back through the inside dining area through tables and through people in line ordering and picking up orders. Congested and chaotic when the line is to the enter/exit door. People will begin to make a path through the grass from the porch down the side of the building across the exiting drive-through lane. Not very safe. There should have been an exit only road from the parking lot back out onto the road. There should be a sidewalk or established walking path from the front porch back to parking including a "Watch for and Yield to Pedestrians" sign and crosswalk. Sadly, and very unfortunately, the food is so bad as well as some of the coffee that I don't think the logistics of the above will be their biggest issue to overcome. Incredibly disappointing after waiting so long for this place to open and knowing the area really needs something like it. Everything we ordered was so dry and tasteless, and overpriced. We also ordered iced lattes that they forgot to make so it was challenging trying to eat the dry food. We asked a staff person about it and she was courteous and helpful to have them make them for us and brought them to us. The prices are very high. This is not a place you'd come and bring the family regularly. Not with today's economy at the least. Not affordable. If the food matched the atmosphere people may come as a novelty experience. Speaking of experience. We trudged through the deep uncut grass on uneven construction poor ground to get to the fence to see the 3 cows that were content to stay near the canopy and not venture near the fence. No paths and uneven ground under foot with too high grass is not inviting. There was a lot of hype and anticipation for this lovely spot. It missed the mark. It's equivalent to a beautiful package outwardly with no substance inwardly. I think we read that the owners are very experienced food service people with years of experience. It made this seem like it would be a sure success. I hope that their experience and willingness to assess what's working and what's not, and to make quick efficient adjustments based on honest reviews vs the fluffy ones that will only draw in more disappointed customers and negative word spread. Really. Make needed adjustments starting with the food. The iced coffee was bitter and expensive. There seems to be an over abundance of employees wandering around. Prices might be a little less though and more attractive if less overhead. There is so much potential for this place to become legendary. Kind, courteous and a beautiful building. The food & coffee were outstanding & were eclipsed only by the incredible customer service.
