My family doesn't get there very often, but every time we do, we are treated with such a level of respect, kindness, and friendliness that you just don't find everywhere anymore. The food is good--nothing fancy, just good, old-fashioned, home-cooked country cooking. My only complaint would be that the diner is small inside and parking is limited. It's often busy, so definitely plan ahead. But even when they are very busy, the wait usually isn't long, and the service is still wonderful. I really appreciate places like this--good food, friendly people, and that comfortable "come on in and sit a spell" feeling. That's what keeps people coming back. If you want to experience authentic, rustic, and FANTASTIC food, you need to try this place. We were here for the first time and it was clearly a local spot, so it is fair to say we were noticed. Not sure how to feel about that, within just a few moments, we knew it was going to be great. The regulars engaged with us and started making recommendations from more than one table. As it turns out, the sausage gravy is in the top two I have ever enjoyed and I am 100% a gravy snob. Ha! The sausage is locally made and simply tastes heavenly. The biscuits are made by someone that knows what they are doing and the eggs have the prettiest deep-yellow yolks, not to mention cooked a perfect over easy. The waitress was a delight and made sure we felt right at home. The regulars are treated like family, including a breakfast birthday stack, complete with a candle and the entire restaurant singing " Happy Birthday" to Bud. He was delighted and even got a few hugs from those close by. Restaurants like this a disappearing from the landscape far too often these days. Be careful you don't pass this place up as the sign is small and does not look like a typical north east diner. The customers were super friendly as well as the staff. We had lunch as they stop serving breakfast at 11. I had the grilled chicken club (no bread). It came with tasty fries. It was the best grilled chicken (with cheese and grilled onions) I had in a long while Hubby had a club sandwich and it was huge. He enjoyed it. Kid had chicken tenders and fries which he enjoyed. It seems as though breakfast places are limited where we're staying here in Luray, but after reviewing some reviews here we decided to take the trip here and I'm glad we did! The service here is wonderful, they make you feel right at home. I wish I remembered to ask for our servers name because she was really sweet. She loved our thick Massachusetts accents and really provided stellar service and made us feel right at home. The prices are phenomenal and the quality and portions of food are great. My husband and I both got a biscuit with gravy, he had a pancake with an egg and bacon, I had an egg bacon and white toast and we split corned beef hash and scrapple, I told my husband he had to try scrapple while we're here for the experience as they do not offer scrapple where we're from. The biscuits and gravy are so delicious I'm getting hungry again as I type this. The corned beef was great, I'm not a huge fan of scrapple but I made my husband try it the pancakes are delicious and everything was fresh. The coffee was nice and bold and hot. Perfect breakfast spot at the foot of the mountain. A quintessential country diner with friendly service and stick to your bones home cooking. We stopped in with the family we were traveling with to fill up before the long drive home to Michigan. It looked packed when we arrived but the seating accommodates more than you would think. Half of me says not to write this review because I don't want to expose my secret place. The other half says that my love for it should be shared with others. So here goes. If you ever find yourself way out near Stanley (probably because you're visiting Luray or Shenandoah National Park), and you have a hankerin' for quick, cheap, yummy down home country cookin', you have to stop in here. Be advised, there will be regulars here who have been coming in for oh, say the last 50 years of their life, and they may look at you strangely because you obviously "ain't from around here." But these folks are friendly so fear not. I have been eating at this diner my whole life, and on visits home I started taking my out-of-towner boyfriend to eat here. Nowadays he pretty much requests that we stop in every single time we're in town. Getting to the point.....the food here is what you might expect at a country diner....hearty and filling. Their menu always has an insert with the "vegetables" of the day, a list which can often include such things as macaroni and cheese, cole slaw, and rice pudding (because of COURSE those are veggies). My elder kinfolk swear by the breakfast plates in the morning and country fried steak for lunch or dinner. And don't leave before scarfing a slice of cherry or chocolate pie. They only accept cash, but a typical dinner should pretty much never cost you more than $10, including a drink. Can't beat that! read more
