Second year in a row we have stopped here on our January 1st motorcycle ride. They were very accommodating for our group of about 30. They moved a bunch of tables so we were all able to sit together. I was a little worried that they might be overwhelmed with so many of us but I was wrong. The service was fantastic, they made sure our drinks were never empty and the food came out surprisingly quick. I had Pappy's pulled pork bbq sandwich with fries which was really good. Paying was very convenient, the receipts had a QR code that you could scan and pay at the table. Over all great experience and I look forward to going back. read more

When you walk into this place you smell freedom appreciation. The decor is mainly firefighters stuff and seems pretty authentic. We were warmly greeted after striking out on two other places it was nice to have that. We saw a sign said due to hiring shortage please be patient. So we did. We were kept up to date and we admired the decor. Ordered the western bacon burger which was delicious. The fireman burger was calorie rich. The pulled pork with Mac and cheese don't recall the name but was fun flavors in the mouth. The chicken tenders were a little over cooked. Overall a great meal. Went here with my boys tonight. The food was average to good. I was expecting better. Not sure why. They advertise everywhere around here. The restaurant boasts firefighter decor: a ladder hanging from the ceiling, a firefighter coat hangs on the wall, a firehose wrapped around a room divider, another leaning against the wall. A bookcase shows off a lot of small scale fire engines. I had the fried oysters which needed some kind of sauce. They tasted fine. But they needed something extra. The hush puppies were fine. The coleslaw was very good! My sons had crab cakes (very good), and vegetables. One son ate all his overcooked green beans. (It may be a Southern thing to overlook green beans.) The other son couldn't eat them. He didn't like those at all. I will definitely be back and maybe become a regular. The menu has a lot of choices that sound very good. We did have to ask for appetizer plates for our onion ring appetizer. The wait staff does everything in a hurry - when they come to check in, they will hear 1 answer and run off before another request can be made. So when they come back, they now have another thing to do. It doubles their work instead of being efficient. Next time, I will know to ask ahead of time for ketchup and sauce for the onion rings and cocktail sauce. The sauces won't come automatically but the food definitely needs to have the flavor added. read more

Opened YELP and it was the first place listed. We decided to stop based on the ratings and appearance and selection of the food. Fire station decor and really quaint inside. People were friendly but on mountain time food came quickly. Meatloaf, hamburger steak and all the food was great-fresh cut fries! I would've given it 5 stars except I realized after a few bites the bottom of the meatloaf was red and not fully cooked and my meal was lukewarm. This place has a killer breakfast. Ordered one biscuit with gravy that comes with fried potatoes and ordered a waffle on the side. The one biscuit and gravy is the size of two most other places. Couldn't believe how much food it was. Couldn't finish it all and I very much hate to leave food behind. The prices are very reasonable and you are well taken care of while there. We had passed this place many times as we traveled up Rt 340. We finally decided today was the day to stop to have lunch. We both ordered the special (Hot Turkey Sandwich with Mashed Potatoes and Gravy). We both enjoy this dish when we get it elsewhere so we thought it'd be great to try it here. The results? Meh. It's was good but not outstanding. For the price ($8.49), you get the main dish, two sides, and a drink. Definitely a great value! The food arrived quickly and was hot. The flavor was good and the potatoes were pretty good as well. The disappointment came by having the sandwich served on plain old white bread, rather than a homemade bread or a Texas toast for example. And the turkey was a little on the skimpy side too. However, for $8, I know I can't ask for the moon. I'd be willing to try Rudy's again. I saw some other plates come out of the kitchen, and saw enough items on the menu that warrant giving this locally owned diner another try. read more

The diner is set in an incredibly beautiful location and the inside is all firehouse themed with gear like uniforms, tanks and ladders tastefully displayed. The whole diner was very clean and inviting. The restaurant has their obvious regulars but the waitress was super friendly and attentive. They have an extensive menu and the food came out in good time. It was all very good, though if I could change anything it would be adding seasoned salt to the fries, or at least adding it to the table. The grilled chicken sandwich was very good and the children's meal portions were very generous. We had an enjoyable meal and I am disappointed that I totally forgot to ring the "great service/meal" appreciation bell by the door on the way out. The kids would have loved it! I liked this restaurant at one time. They have adequate tasting food to stay in business with but they are not a reliable business when it comes to their open and closing times. There not open when they say they are open.. This is the second time this month that my wife and I had been in a lot of pain because of medical problems. So neither one of us was in a position to cook. So because we live in the big town of Shenandoah, we were relieved to find that we have access to an adequate tasting restaurant to be available for us when we need to buy a meal. We just need to place an order before they close and we will be fine. . You just need to order and pick up your meal before 8 PM. So it is 7:05 P.M tonight. Rudy's is open til 8:00 PM. So we spend about fifteen to twenty minutes trying to decide what adequate food we will enjoy tonight. We are finally ready to order and we are anticipating the food we chose when we call to order. Ouch, THEY ARE CLOSED. I should have ordered by 8Pm. Oh, I did. But they were closed. Surely you can get a meal if you get your order in by 7:45 PM. Oops, They closed 45 minutes early. Yea, I admit. I was cutting it close. We would have put our order in by 7:30.PM. But that is a no go. The new girl wasn't able to keep up with the orders. I tried calling several times but no one would answer. They must be closed. My wife gave me a different number. And she said she knows that she can reach them If only we had put an order before they closed. We could have picked it up by 8 PM. But Rudy's Diner is a business like no other. They are closed when they say they are open. But you should be fine if you get there or call them and get your order by 7:15 PM. You are guaranteed to get your meal before they close the next day. My Suggestion; Call Rudy's Diner before you look over the menu. Because they are like those funny business signs that will say we open at 8 but don't expect us til 10. We are open til 8 PM unless I have to work my other job. So don't look over their menu during their so called normal business hours and make yourself crave something from their adequate tasting food menu before you check if they are in fact really open for real. Make sure their business is going to be normal and actually be open from the time they open all the way til the end they say they close. That would be normal read more

We were in town today for a softball tournament, and needed lunch, so I called in an order to go. We were, to say the least, rather disappointed. We ordered club sandwiches, which were the bright spot in the meal; however, one of the sandwiches did not have the mayo on it as ordered. We also had macaroni salad, which seemed freshly made, but lacked simple seasoning like salt and pepper. And as another side, we ordered the Bacon and Beans, which were described on the menu as " House-made sweet and smoky beans with a hearty helping of bacon"; I had asked what kind of beans they were (wondering if they were based on mixed beans or pork and beans), I was told they used Bush's brown sugar beans and added to them. What we got was Bush's brown sugar canned beans, with, as far as we could tell, nothing was added , and our serving had NO bacon. So, the food was nothing spectacular, but service was badly lacking. We arrived at the ball park with no napkins, no flatware to eat macaroni salad and not-so-special beans with, no straws for our drinks (which my husband had to go back into the restaurant for before we left the parking lot. I had also requested salt and pepper- twice- and was not given that. The parking lot was full, so Rudy's must be doing something right, but they sure didn't with our order. If you want something other than a BLT or pancakes, keep driving. The staff is great but the food isn't. Breakfast offered potatoes that I thought would be genuine home fries but were just French fries they cut up. My husband ordered a cheese omelette but the cheese inside wasn't melted, as if they used pre-shredded stuff that doesn't melt. I apologize to the very nice wait staff and manager but this place needs to up their food game out of respect for the locals. I love the town and people. But we will eat elsewhere. read more

My wife and I stopped by today after driving the Skyline Drive. The service was great and the staff were sanitizing everything. This was a very pleasant surprise. My wife doesn't complain much but is quite particular with her food. The loaded baked potato she tried was , in her words, fantastic. My fried chicken was crisp, and juicy. Portions were massive. The list of mouth watering sides was difficult to choose from as everything sounded so delicious. We've eaten at Rudy's at least 4 or 5 years in a row and have brought other family members along to join us. I LOVE the Rudy's sauce. It's great that veterans are given priority parking. The price point and value for the amount of food you get is impressive. The servers are friendly, yet a little too busy to be thoroughly attentive, especially when spending extra time chatting with customers they know. Last night's experience changed our opinion of the restaurant. We would take a bite, swat flies, swat flies, and swat more flies before taking another bite (no exaggeration). This really turned us off. There was a table behind us that had not been cleared of dirty dishes from before we arrived and still was dirty when we left. There was another very large table by the windows that held dirty dishes shortly after we arrived through the time we left. I would imagine that dirty, unattended dishes help to attract flies. They have had many flies each year we've visited, but this time the flies were relentless. I recommend that the owner contract with an exterminator to keep the flies under control. I'm not sure if we will be back, which makes me sad. I really hesitated to write this review because I want this restaurant to do well, but needed to be honest about the fly situation. The North Side Diner in Shenandoah was a great surprise. The service is fantastic and our server Jessy took great care of us. The food was a huge surprise. Had a meat lovers omelette that was perfectly cooked and chock full of bacon, ham and sausage. Homemade biscuit was also delicious. Came in on a Wed morning. Mostly just locals. Sat at the bar and had a great conversation with some friendly folks. And when was the last time you saw a $.50 coffee? Seriously? Our entire tab was $14. Wife had the breakfast sandwich. Don't know if we'll pass through this area again, but if we do we WILL be eating here again. read more
