Mama Mania
Tanny D.

This place sounded so intriguing to my husband and I that we drove from an hour away to try it, within minutes of it closing. They close a bit early (4 PM) even on Saturdays. I ordered the Mama Mania and my husband got the Port Ruby. The port ruby felt pretty light because there was no meat, and we didn't even miss it either. The sauerkraut was not too strong and worked well with the thousand island sauce. Felt like a good faux ruben sandwich. The mama mania was so delicious, the mozzarella was so nice and soft, and perfectly melty. The pesto was so perfectly balanced and not too strong. I really liked the panini bread as well! I wish we had one of these locations in Northern Virginia! Please open one! Also wish the hours were a little bit more convenient.

Grilled cheese sandwiches; what could go wrong? Or in this case, what could go right? Such a simple dish, but such a plethora of factors affecting the final product. Choices of bread, cheese, mayo or no mayo, butter or no butter, griddle or pan. These all make a huge difference. And then there's the anticipation. Like many, I grew up on the winter/sick day meal of a grilled cheese (or two) and a bowl of soup. Sunbeam bread, buttered on the outsides, in the pan, and flipped. But I fell in love with these sandwiches when I took up bowling as a teenager. There the griddle had a permanent coating of every food item from the menu. The cook ensured that the bread was so coated in butter the sandwich could glide across the griddle like a hockey puck. I always ordered two, with a side of fries. This culinary ceremony had to wait till I completed every game for the day as my ball would have slid off my fingers and thumb constantly. And so, knowing I would be heading to Harrisonburg in a matter of weeks, I began my foodie preparation plan. This begins with a combing of Yelp then social media and between the two, building a Yelp collection to work from. When GCM popped up, I knew this would be a first stop. For lunch I made a visit to the food truck location, in downtown. Kathleen was onsite so I got to hear the story of GCM (her maiden name was "Mania") and the time (months!) she took perfecting her sandwich and soup recipes. I started with the "Mama Mania" and a homemade rice krispy treat. She had recommended the soup, but 1) I am not a big fan of tomato soup and 2) I wasn't sure I could eat an entire bowl (I know better). The mozzarella cheese melted and enmeshed with the basil pesto, tomato, and drizzle of sriracha sauce was a work of art. The creamy and floral notes of the cheese were a perfect complement to the basil and heat of the sriracha. I had to go back for more. Next was the Classic Johnny. American cheese, butter, white bread. More like Momma's than bowling alley. And that was just fine by me. She brought out a sample of the tomato soup and let me tell you, I had instant regret I didn't purchase an entire bowl. Get some when you go! I ate my krispy treat (so gooey and delicious) then made the arduous walk back to my hotel. I could have had lunch there every day. And so upon my next trip to Harrisonburg I knew it was time to visit the main location (just minutes from the JMU campus). There I ordered the "Triple Lindy" (cheddar, Monterey jack, spinach, bacon, butter grilled on white bread) and a side of "Mickey's Mac & Cheese" (has a hint of nutmeg and spices). Can I move to Harrisonburg?! Or can they open a location down here in Georgia? Because I need GCM in my life! Friendly team, amazing menu, and (for me) many more visits to be made.

I had the loraly? Sandwich was great, i added ham n avocado. I missed the soups, but my wife had tomato soup was amazing. Not a cream based tomato soup. Quite a lengthy line, to order. But was worth the 20 minute wait. Service was awesome, Thank You.

Service was friendly. Small establishment but with good outdoor seating. Food was really good! Prices were reasonable as well. It seems like a fun place to go with friends or kids.

Trotta-Cado Friday Special with Sweet Tea

Grilled cheese - YES PLEASE! This grilled cheese spot is absolutely adorable! There's seating both inside and outside with cornhole set up to play while you're waiting for your food to be ready. We dropped by here on our way down I-81. It was the perfect spot to grab lunch! I ordered the Trotta-Cado sandwich, a daily special only on Fridays. I made it a combo, so it came with a sweet tea and a bag of Route 11 chips costing about $10. The sandwich was so warm and fresh being filled with avocado and mac & cheese. But I think the highlight of the meal was the sweet tea! Maybe it was because I don't drink sweet tea too often and it was a pretty warm day, but that tea tasted so good! I think for the size of the sandwich and meal it wasn't entirely worth $10 especially being located in Southern Virginia. But that's not going to stop me from going back again! I'd definitely recommend this spot if you're looking for a quick lunch spot to drop by while taking a trip down I-81!

4/5 for the good grilled cheese sandwiches & tomato soups, but rounding it up to a 5/5 for the exceptional service! The lady taking our order was super kind and helpful and gave us stickers. I noticed that she was really patient with customers and made sure to tell customers to enjoy their food and/or have a good day. This place is popular for both sit-in and take out orders, so there's a bit of a wait. I tried the "Classic Johnny" (which is just your typical American cheese in between two buttery & toasty white bread) and added "Taylor Ham Pork Roll" to it. Apparently, the tomato soup here is also extremely popular so I knew I had to try a cup of that, too. After about 20 minutes, we got our food which came in one giant tray. The grilled cheese was phenomenal. The bread was crunchy on the top, soft in the center, and buttery. The ham wasn't overly salty and was flavorful. And cheese on bread or meat is always the move. Overall, the "Classic Johnny" is a simple sandwich and is a great choice if that's what you're looking for. But if you want something more complex, they have lots and lots of options for that. The tomato soup was more chunky than creamy and you can taste every element of the soup. Pretty strong tomato broth which was enjoyable! I definitely prefer a creamier tomato soup, but this one was good, too. Overall, this place was a great place to stop by and grab food during a car trip. It definitely beats grabbing a quick bite at fast-food chains if you have 20 minutes to spare.

Amazing food! We got Mama Mania, Triple Lindy, and Pepperoni Strips with tomato soup and Strawberry Limeade. So good! Our favorite was the Triple Lindy.

Wrapper stuck to the sandwich, had to peel it off

The grilled cheese was alright but definitely not worth the price, it's a pretty small sandwich too. Flavor was a little bit dull and overall just an average grilled cheese. I was so excited to try this place but left kinda disappointed. I ordered the Mama Mania to-go and the wrapper stuck to the sandwich. Staff was friendly though, and the decorations/ambiance was quaint and cute. I'm not sure if i'd go here again. I love grilled cheese and I really wanted to love this place, but my experience just was not good.

We also ordered the Reuben sandwich which was served with a hefty portion of corned beef and served on marble rye. I told her I don't want another bowl , as I didn't want the food to go to waste and didn't have time to wait for a new one. Here is were the service turned south; - Molly didn't come back to check on us or fill the water cups - We didn't get a discount of any kind in the check, as you would normally expect! - I expected the chef or the manager on duty to come out and apologize, but that didn't happen. - Finally, Molly brought our check when we finished eating and didn't ask if we are interested in desserts, as typically the case! Lots of prom kids and college students filled the place. We were quickly seated in a nice booth and Nate our server helped us with some stout beers. We had a milk stout and a caramel macchiato stout the latter of which was the best. Looking at the menu I have to say it was not your standard ale house fair. It was definitely "elevated" in this regard. We asked to split a 2 soft shell entree with broccolini & seasoned mash, a bowl of crab bisque and a pierogi sampler. We also asked for an extra plate, to which Nate said he would take care of it. When the food arrived it was divided perfectly. Nate had split the bowl of soup into 2 small bowls and he divided the entree and sides onto 2 plates. The soft shell crabs were HUGE, the largest I had ever seen, and crisply fried to perfection. The sides were equally exquisite in their flavor and preparation. The crab bisque was loaded with fresh lump crabmeat and perfectly seasoned. The pirogies were also excellent in flavor and presentation. It was the most satisfying meal I'd had in a while (could be because I was craving soft shells) Needless to say we were very happy with the food in every way and were stuffed as we asked for the check. Nate/Nathaniel really made the experience as he was highly attentive, though caring for many tables, and was quick to take care of our every need. The place was really rocking with customers and everyone there was having a great time.
