This place is super popular and I can see why. The menu isn't huge but it's got some heavy hitters for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Don't expect too much healthy options here but you could get an omelet with veggies and cheese and be very happy. Expect some wait times but they move tables pretty quickly. I'm surprised they don't leave coffee carafes at the table but service was consistent and pleasant. I had the sausage and biscuits and yes- the biscuits ARE that special. It's rare you get a fluffy huge buttery biscuit that's really as good as they say but yeah worth getting some to freeze. The sausage gravy was well balanced but I think maybe getting old. The majority of my family (9 of us) stopped by the Thunderbird around 9am on a Sunday morning. When we arrived in town the day before and I spotted the Thunderbird and felt that was a place we should certainly visit. I'm glad that we did. Service was truly outstanding. Our waitress was amazing and attentive. The restaurant is a decent size but not huge. I was surprised they were able to accommodate our party of nine. I had the sausage with two eggs over medium, a biscuit, and home fries. Food was fantastic and everyone in our party enjoyed their meals. I highly recommend the Thunderbird for breakfast or lunch. Even though the restaurant wasn't crowded, it took way too long for someone to acknowledge we were waiting to be seated (we almost left), and then it took way too long for the waitress to make an initial appearance at our table. However, once the waitress appeared at our table, everything went fine. I think they were understaffed. My dining companion noted that the omelet was overstuffed, which is a good thing. Eggs are cheaper than the filling, so she felt like she got a very good value for her money. Last time we were there was a few years ago, and it felt like it has a different vibe now. Came to Thunderbird for a quick bite to eat before hiking in Shenandoah. Definitely has that small town diner look and feel. We were seated promptly and Lou was our server. She was very sweet and attentive. We ordered a cup of coffee, the sausage and eggs meal and a blueberry cream cheese waffle. With the sausage and eggs meal, I also got toast and homefries. The homefries were nice and crispy, the eggs were fluffy, the sausage was nice, had a little kick to it, and the bread was thick cut with not too much butter. The waffle was a standard run-of-the-mill Belgian waffle, the blueberry cream cheese almost had a cheesecake taste. Creamy, light and a mixture of whole and blended blueberries. Overall, this was a nice meal to start the day before a long hike. However, the meal was $32. Seems a little steep for how small the portions are. Also important to note, you do pay a little extra if you pay with a card. So if you want to save a dollar or two, you can pay with cash. read more

But the chicken fried steak with gravy was delicious. The actual stars of the show? The tomato/sausage thing and the grits. Put them together and you have magic in the mouth. The collards were also nice and vinegary and very tender, and the apples were like a very good apple pie filling (I'd eat that with ice cream. ) Service was warm and attentive. Took a small staycation with my partner and we decided to stop by here as our last meal before leaving the Massanutten/ Harrisonburg area. This spot was recommended by a few friends who live in the area/ have visited Massanutten. It was busy inside, there was a wait for parties of 4 or more, but if you were a party of 2, then you could get seated by their counter. Cozy vibes, really friendly staff. All the food looked so good! We had a difficult time figuring out what to eat. I ended up picking the salted caramel cold foam latte and their Andre The Great, while my partner selected their cured ham & breakfast combo. We also got their famous biscuits and gravy to-go to bring back home. The cured ham was kind of salty, but it's cured ham. I really liked the Andre The Great, excellent flavors and their sausage was nicely spiced. Once we tried the biscuits and gravy at home, it was quite tasty with the spiced sausage in the gravy. What a gem! Whenever we travel I try to find a great breakfast spot to start our morning off on the right note since we usually end up grabbing fast food for lunch. Thunderbird was a bit out of our way but so worth the extra time in the car. I kept it simple with two eggs over easy, homemade sausage, a biscuit, and fried red potatoes. I also got a plain waffle for a little something sweet (and took 3 of the 4 sections to go for another morning). My husband got the Sticky Chicken - tenders stuffed inside French toast with a spicy maple syrup drizzle - with a side of cheese grits. And our daughter got the cinnamon apple waffle with a side of homemade sausage. Everything was delicious, well seasoned, and came out quickly. It was awesome to get homemade breakfast sausage. It had tons of sage and a nice kick to it. Service was helpful and friendly. Our waitress offered us drinks to go and was quick to refill waters and get us anything extra we needed. It's a small thing but I loved that they had plenty of parking and I love a diner style restaurant with a counter. The whole place was well themed and comfortable. Clean bathrooms, too.
