Shannon, the owner and I chatted for quite awhile on how "Ollie Cat Cafe" came to be. The restaurant location on how many different things it was previous was quite fascinating, soda shop, pharmacy, opera house. Loved, the vibe and feel from this small town cafe. The atmosphere, passion, and dedication of Shannon , as one of the owners is something; I personally haven't seen in quite awhile in a restaurant. I ordered the Panko seasoned flounder sandwich that was outstanding, delicious, light and flavorful. The sandwich came with the side, and was delighted that they were fresh vegetable medley with the perfect amount of seasoning. Wonderful staff and dining experience. If you are local to Luray, VA , Harrisonburg, VA or surrounding areas; support Ollie Cat Cafe, youll be happy you did. If your on vacation, and looking to support, a local hardworking couple and a unique flavor palate menu, that Tim & Shannon bring with their Florida background, this is your cafe.

The local…read moreneighborhood vibe was there, the eclectic decors was really on point and I loved the vintage booths. The waitstaff were very friendly, and the place was really well kept clean and presentable. The down side... right off the jump, the water they served us was not drinkable. I'm not being pretentious here, I was legitimately concerned after taking that first sip if I was going to spend the night over the toilet. I did not take another sip, and told my family not to ether. The food took a while, and I don't mind a wait for good eats. But the other reviews on here were right, it was tasteless and seemed to be served right out of a frozen food box. I had the chicken parm sandwich, the scolding hot marinara sauce was burnt by every measure, and the fried chicken patty was still cold in the middle. To the restaurants credit, they did not mess up the fry's. My family's meals were similar, with my wife having the cordon blue with similar results in the fried chicken, and my daughter who loves chicken fingers, not eating more than the one. Overall I think this place has the potential to be good, but they need to fix their kitchen before they do anything else.

You need to treat yourself to the sublime. I did that on Saturday night. I had dinner at Porch & Vine Restaurant in Luray, VA. The Ambiance is warm and welcoming, as is the staff. The menu is creative and prepared to perfection. Everyone LOVES what they do and it shows in their attention to detail and the service they provide. I had been messaging the owner, Tony, weeks prior to arriving and he had seemed very supportive and excited to have us. We had planned to have a printed menu with catered specifically to us and when we arrived all we got was a tacky birthday balloon on the table. The hostess was definitely treating us differently and we were some of the only people of color in the restaurant. I have been to other places in the Shenandoah area and I have never experienced something like this where I just felt like I wasn't welcomed at all. I highly recommend Rhouse Wine if you want a similar vibe with very accepting and friendly staff. I had gone up to tell the hostess about my previous emails with the owner and she said "oh I forgot I got a text about something but the printer is down". She was being very dismissive and condescending towards us but very friendly towards everyone else. I really feel conflicted about this because the food was great (except the short ribs were too salty) and our server seemed nice. But I felt rushed on my way out when we got our bill just after receiving our dessert and I had noticed that people kept getting little gifts from the server with their bill and that never came. We didn't even get a candle or anything on the dessert. What was supposed to be a special night, turned into a terrible experience I hope no one ever has to encounter.

Wonderful pancakes, egg sandwich, and avocado toast. My eggs were a little past over-easy but it was the only thing that wasn't perfect (and the host offered to have them redone but I said it was fine). We got a blueberry cream cookie and a lemon bar as an appetizer because sometimes we're a little extra and they were SO GOOD! I love a good pastry case and theirs was top notch. There were plentiful refills on the coffee (nice and hearty brew). Our server was so attentive and nice that we tipped extra. Just an all-around surprisingly excellent experience here.

That tells me I've discovered something, since locals know the best places to go. I changed my plan from a soup and sandwich to a sandwich with a side based on my (outstanding) servers' recommendation. I selected the 'Monaco' but all the options looked good (and I love the names). Since it's a coffee shop I stayed for a cappuccino, which was served in an adorable tiny cup Great service. Not a fancy place but doesn't pretend or need to be.

So, this place had awesome service. The waitress was polite, attentive and yet her broken English worked perfectly for the position she was in. She knew the menu and came back to check on us more than a few times. 4/5 stars for the service. She was the best thing about the place. For the food, 1 star. The pictures on the yelp site showing the food explain it all. Notice some images show the food with excess liquid, I mean watery beans without any flavor? And then the rice was served without any seasoning. The guacamole came with huge chunks of tomatoes and it was hard to separate the avocado from the tomatoes. When we sat the waitress brought out chips and salsa. Half the chips were going stale. The salsa was good but more of a liquid consistency. We asked the chips be sent back and new ones brought out. The waitress did without a complaint. Then the things went downhill fast. My wife ordered the Chicken Fajitas for two, "Meh." I asked her about the beans and rice, "Meh." At least the margarita was good. It was sweet, but that is common and can depend on someone else's palate. She requested the corn tortillas because she forgot to order them at the beginning. The waitress brought them out without a problem. They tasted, "Meh." I ordered the Deluxe Burrito, it came out looking like a Picasso done by a three year old, filled with beef from a chef who used to work at the Bell. I tried to eat it but, "Meh." Long and short, nothing had seasoning unless it had the wrong seasoning and nothing was done right. This place deserves a 1 star.

The building is not much to look at from the outside, but it is super clean inside and the bathrooms are spotless. We started with the House Chips as an appetizer, because it looked different and interesting. I'm a sucker for garlic knots and a Caprese, but we were up for trying something different. The menu says "house made chips, specialty sauce, mozzarella and Parmesan cheese," so we were thinking maybe an Italian style nachos maybe? It wasn't that at all. I'm not sure what the specialty sauce is? I'm guessing some kind of really mild queso. Whatever it is, it was tasty and definitely tasty. The house made chips did NOT disappoint. At first with the top layer, I was thinking it was lacking a little seasoning, but the more you got into it, the more it shined. Still unsure what made it up, but it was good. Check out the photos. Then we ordered a large extra cheese pizza. Wow!! These people understand extra cheese! First the cheese was abundant. So much cheese (which is exactly the way we like it)! Here's where other places get it wrong. They cook the pizza the "regular" time, without considering the extra ingredient on top, so it comes out undercooked and/or soggy. Not here!!! It was so yummy! Done to perfection. I didn't take a pic, but I finished my meal off with a scoop of espresso chocolate chip ice cream. Oh so satisfying! Our server was amazing! Friendly, her timing was fantastic and she was just super nice! We would definitely stop here for pizza again when in the area. And yes - try the House Chips. They are really different, but totally worth it.
