The service was some of the best I have ever seen. The lady behind the counter was wonderful. Go here for the "Norm" kind of feel (5 for friendliness). However, the food was dreadful. I ordered a simple breakfast of eggs, home fries and bacon. The eggs were bland and had to be salted and peppered by me. The home fries were made from unfried, rubbery, boiled potatoes with zero spice. The bacon was....well, it's bacon. Can you go wrong with bacon? (1 for food). read more

We were looking for a good, non-chain restaurant for breakfast while in Harrisonburg. This was the place! You cannot get any more local than L&S. No tables, only a counter full of locals. We sat down at the end and feared that we took someone's spot . The food is simple but delicious. Hubs had the garbage omelette and I had biscuits & gravy. You never know what conversations you may hear coming from just a few stools down the counter and the staff is alway on top of things. This is the quintessential old timey diner with a basic diner menu made with farm fresh products. The waitstaff and cook are friendly and persoanable and welcome all the locals by name. I had 2 eggs over easy with home fries and bacon and I have to say...the eggs were SO delicious & fresh! The bacon was crispy and cooked perfectly. The homefries were real potatoes but I think ai would ask for them to be cooked crispy next time. Coffe & tea pours were frequent & generous. The pancake was delicous but huge & I could not finish it. One pancake is a meal in itself. The hubby had two eggs sunnyside up and country ham and although his eggs got a little over done for his liking, he also said they were delicious and that the ham was exceptional. We did not have a bisquit but we witnessed a fresh batch of truly homemade bisquits coming out of the over from the back kitchen and they looked divine! This is a great stop with really delicious food bit space is limited and is diner-counter seating only. Nice little find. We were looking for a local location for breakfast and found one. This place only has stool at the bar but the folks eating were willing to move without us asking to allow us to sit with our children. The service and food were great. I use to go there every day for breakfast and lunch until I moved away 6 years ago. Service was always excellent and the waitresses were always pleasant. I never failed to see the owner there every morning making sure everything was moving precisely. I move back 6 weeks ago and everything has gone to Hell. The manager is the owner's daughter who shows up whenever she wants to show up. She uses "fuck" every other word. I know more about her dating life and who she's sleeping with more than I know about mine. Rarely is there a special on the board anymore. Friday is usually hamburger steak. I've lived here in Harrisonburg for over a year and I had never been to L&S Diner! It wasn't until my dad and two brothers came to town from Utah to visit me and we found this place through Yelp and we had to try it out. It was like walking back in time to the 1960's! The building looks like an old train car style diner and the only seating is bar style which made it even better! We each ordered something different in order to try as many items of food as possible and we were all thrilled with the taste and time it took to get into our mouths from the grill. The waitress was a sweet lady who has the perfect Virginia accent to match the ambiance. I enjoyed my hamburger steak, but next time I'll get the biscuit sandwiches. I tried one of the two on my daughter's plate--the biscuit was big and fluffy, the eggs, bacon and cheese rounding it out for a great breakfast sandwich. A professor recommended L and S to me last spring. A year later my boyfriend and I finally got around to trying it. It is super small inside and there is only counter seating. The wait staff is so friendly and a lot of regulars come in so the atmosphere is very homey and welcoming. We both had eggs over easy, bacon/sausage, home fries, toast, and split a pancake. Eggs were cooked perfectly which is always my main criticism for breakfast. The homemade sausage was delicious! Bacon and pancake were good. It was a traditional greasy diner breakfast done right. The chips were obviously a knock off brand stored in a Tupperware box, which could not of helped, cause they were too stale to eat. when you ask for pickles on a burger, if you're like me, you expect the classic crisp dill pickle slices. However, if you order the gravy (Monday & Friday chipped beef other days sausage), you will find little meat in it.
