I was coming home from the Homestead and stopped off in Harrisonburg. I asked AI for the best breakfast sandwich in town, and boy was it right! Simply put, the bodega breakfast sandwich might be the best breakfast sandwich I've ever eaten. I took it to eat on the road and was startled about how delicious it was. The freshly baked (you can tell) brioche bun with everything bagel seasoning on top added a great salty taste to go along with the tasty stuff inside. Eclectic energy! We were steered here for lunch, based on its Yelp reviews. Thank you, again, Yelp. The waitstaff was more than pleasant, they were fun. I think it was because they enjoyed working there. Or, at least it give them a chance to eat some really tasty food. I had their Cubano Tartine. That's kind of like an omelet with the ingredients of a Cubano sandwich, except for the roll, mixed in. (And yes, I get that the cooking process is a bit different.) ' Anyway, this Cubano Tartine shows up on a plate in front of me. I dig in and keep digging. The ingredients, ham, cheese, pickles, etc, were plentiful and delicious. They were sitting on an ample slice of their sourdough bread. That was the first issue. It was IMPOSSIBLE to cut. I guess I could have asked for a steak knife or maybe a power tool. But, there was so much other stuff that I was able to have a very filling meal without it. The other issue was that the lightly dressed side salad was doused in dressing. I bounced back and forth about this review for the better part of a week. I was never going below three but ultimately decided on four stars. This place is just cool! The vibes are amazing. One the day I was there it was an all female staff and possibly female owned but I can't confirm that. It was vibrant, bright, and welcoming. The food is very niche' so if your looking for a traditional southern breakfast, this isn't it. What we had was pretty good though, the strawberry french toast, and the chorizo bowl WITHOUT AVACADO (this is important) and the freshly pressed OJ was the thing dreams are made of. So why the debate on stars? What's the the avocado?? Here's the thing, I don't like avocado, never have and never will. Not saying it's bad, it's just not for me. So when I ordered my chorizo bowl I specifically asked for no avocado, this annoyed my server somehow and she committed the service sin of trying to convince a guest that they want something they don't. After I said no twice, she walked away and said I'll just put it on the side. Like seriously lady WTF are you paid by the avocado people? No means NO!!! What a lovely experience! I can easily see why there is a long wait here. We added our name to the list and were told it would be a 45 minute wait. Conveniently, there is a coffee shop, bookstore, and flower and gift shop across the street in a really new and cute warehouse to pass the time. We probably could've spent even longer in that cozy bookshop! Our meal consisted of strawberry tahini waffles, green poutine filled with fresh herbs, and a few made in house baked goods from their bakery. We also thoroughly enjoyed our mocktail (they offer a fun variety with fresh juices). The space is light and airy and looks into the bakery. Absolutely 1 of 2 best breakfast spots in Harrisonburg. Our other favorite is Heritage bakery... the theme of bakery lets you know that both places make all their bread and baked goods fresh! They don't gave thousands of dishes but every dish is thoughtful and each ingredient necessary to pull off the perfect bite. I think the fig pig tartine might be one of the best things I've eaten in a long time. The fig jam on freshly baked sourdough with fresh prosciutto and white cheddar, nutty arugula and the perfect sprinkle of lemon jest completes the dance in your palate. It's a must get. If you want something hearty... the sweet and hot breakfast biscuit will hit the spot. The jalapeño mixed with pear jam on a freshly baked biscuit... and the gooey white cheddar... so so good! Everything is fresh and delicious! A lot of breakfast places serve burnt industrial coffee... but they serve the coffee from Chestnut Ridge which is just across the street in the basement... but it's amazing! I appreciated that they were able to give me half/half on the greens and roasted potatoes as sides for the frittata. The Okay: service fell a bit short at times. They forgot about my partner's coffee. But I'll chalk this up to them being really busy. My partner wasn't too crazy about his breakfast sandwich, stating that the bread used was a bit too fluffy. My friend and I came here for brunch on a Tuesday around 12:30pm as we were passing through Harrisonburg. You can sit inside or outside, and we decided to sit outside since we had my dog. It's a boujee diner for sure, and they had a somewhat limited menu option with some interesting specialty options. I got an iced dirty chai with oat milk which was okay. For breakfast I did the soft scramble egg toast which was on sourdough and came with cherry tomatoes, bacon crumbs, and chives. The sourdough was way too buttery for me, like it overpowered the rest of the meal. My friend did the strawberry rhubarb french toast with a side of 2 eggs over medium which he said was good. Service was slow though for not a super buy time, we had 3 different waiters. I'm not sure if that was because we were sitting outside and they weren't sure who was responsible but it took them awhile to come take our drink order, food order, and then my friend had to go inside to ask for the check. Cute cafe though, I wouldn't necessarily call it a diner though. It's cool, the building was an old car shop so I like how they remodeled it. There's a bakery attached to it too which is cool. Amazing stop during a weekend getaway to Shenandoah National Park. Arrived at 8:50 and was able to get a perfect seat indoors. Our server was so attentive and was able to accommodate any additions/substitutions to our orders. We ordered the Seasonal Frittata (Smokey Succotash Frittata) and the Cinnamon Swirl French toast. Both items were phenomenal. The French toast had a balanced flavor profile with both savory and sweet notes. The seasonal frittata was outstanding. We wanted to eat at the cafe on a Sunday afternoon on our road trip from Roanoke to DC, but there was too long a wait. Instead we picked up a fruit tart, double chocolate scone, a cruller, and a chocolate chip cookie from the bakery side. All were good. Magpies was a 50 minute trip from our holiday getaway spot. It was also one of the nearest attractions outside of the many caverns lining route 11. The wait was my least favorite. Definitely should have called ahead. Once we were seating everything moved quickly. Ordered and they served us shortly after. Food was good for the most part. The eggs weren't really my speed but I enjoyed the holiday cinnamon swirl French Toast and my husband had the blueberry pancakes. The little one pretty much ate her share of both our meals. I don't recall being offered a kids menu (or cup for that matter). Ambiance was great, super chill and relaxed. The loudest thing there was our baby of course especially after waiting an hour to eat. Everything was fine, folks were super courteous. Probably wouldn't double back, the menu boasted local pork options which wasn't great for our non-pork eating, preferably halal family but I am sure those items were just as delicious! Happy eating! Came to Magpie on a Friday morning to fuel up before leaving Virginia after a week-long visit. There was a wait of about 25 minutes, but the wait is not a problem because right across the street is a collective of little shops/boutiques you can browse in the meantime. Once we were notified, we headed back and upon sitting down, I realized they have little blankets near the front you can grab if you're cold! (It was very cold outside and you got a chill every time the door opened and closed). I'm from Florida and had never seen anything like that before which I found very thoughtful! The menu is limited which is great for someone like myself who has trouble deciding what to order. Immediately I knew that I wanted the sweet heat maple biscuit. We also ordered the cinnamon swirl french toast with a side of two eggs, a cup of coffee and an americano. We had Jess as our server who was hustling the whole time due to being busy, yet never failed to check in on us. The coffee was just okay, which was a bit surprising. I figured since this seemed more like a "hip" and "modern" diner that the coffee would be a bit more robust, but tasted just a tad better than coffee you'd expect at a diner. Albeit it did warm me up, so I'm thankful for that. The sweet heat maple biscuit had such a unique combination of flavors. The honey mustard and maple chile drizzle worked surprisingly well together. The biscuit wasn't too dry, but the bacon could have been a bit more crispy. The homefries it came with were pretty standard. We also got the cinnamon swirl french toast which was pretty good. The only wish would be that they served real maple syrup, that really would have allowed this dish to shine as its not something you find in many places. With this dish we also ordered a side of eggs which were nice and fluffy, and garnished. Overall this meal came to $39.78. The most expensive item was the sweet heat biscuit which was $16, which was definitely overpriced. I dont know if I'd go back to Magpie diner if I was in the area again, HOWEVER, I would absolutely go to their bakery next door again which we visited after our meal. I had the best spinach and feta croissant of my life. They also made a very beautiful and tasty sourdough. read more

My service experience was not great, as I waited a solid fifteen minutes at my table without so much as a water before someone finally got around to me. I choose to focus more on the food however. Options included sweet baked goods, but I was tempted by the option to get a vegan breakfast bowl. Flavor can come from freshness or from a ton of salt, and here it's really both, as a delicious mix of ingredients included both fresh greenery and some very salty soy-based fake meat. The ultimate result was pretty good in my book, and I can certainly think of a lot of times where I was on the road and wished I could find such a breakfast. I honestly don't know if you could put more things I love into one space; a diner, that serves brunch, with a in-house bakery, and a coffee roaster next door (until recently), and cocktails, with their own coworking space, in an historic building (formerly a tire shop and garage)! My foodie heart (and stomach) was about to explode before I ever entered the place. But enter I did. I began with a cup of Chestnut Ridge Coffee and began my gastronomical journey down the menu. As I read, I would occasionally take a look around and found a deep appreciation 1) for their restoration and conservation of the space and 2) the immense amount of sunlight pouring in through the windows (including those of the bay doors). Of course I'm sure this is appreciated even more during the winter months. It is a beautiful place. And though there are many restaurants-cafes-coffee shops-etc. that I speak highly of, concerning quality of menu, I cannot always refer to their space as one of remarkable design. Magpie, I can. And without reservation. I will not go into the exact menu items I ordered, as most were seasonally, but I will speak to their level of quality. This is no run-of-the-mill diner. Their kitchen is producing what I am sure will one day be award winning food. I say this in regards to both their brunch and dinner menu. I look forward to returning soon. read more

Delicious food. We decided to go here because we had time to spare before going to some farms and we had heard it was good. We were able to get parked nearby and had to get on the waitlist, which was 60-75 minutes. We had the time so it wasn't an issue. Once we were called we were seated outside but with great weather, it made for a great experience. The staff was friendly, and the food great. My wife and I started off with spicy passion fruit mockeritas. For my meal, I went with the lemon blueberry waffle, which was so good. This reminds me of places in the south I have visited with garage doors that open in the summer. Beautifully decorated diner, clean, and service is prompt. The food tastes as good as it looks. Stopped here for Brunch today after church. We had about a 20 min wait but we just walked across the street and did some shopping while part of our group waited. The hubs ordered the Cinnamon Swirl French Toast and I ordered the Key Lime Coconut Waffle. My husband said the cinnamon sugar butter on the toast was awesome. The waffle is thin which i had never had before but actually really liked it. If you want a thick fluffy waffle, this is not for you. They were both delicious(I snuck a bite of the hubs lol)! Both our plates with bacon and drinks was around $30. I didnt catch the young girls named that served us but she was very engaging, professional, and took great care of us. The atmosphere is casual. Wanted to love this place, but never got the chance to even try it. Went inside and got set up on the wait list by the hostess. It was morning and freezing cold outside. We were asked to wait outside, to which we responded it was too cold. We were instructed to wait inside the building next door, but we advised we had already tried to go inside prior to arriving at the diner, and the doors were locked. The hostess insisted it was open. We left and again tried the building but it was indeed closed and locked. At this point, we decided to try a different coffee shop that was open and welcoming.
