strawberry rhubarb french toast with a side of 2 eggs over medium
    Libby H.

My friend and I came here for brunch on a Tuesday around 12:30pm as we were passing through Harrisonburg. You can sit inside or outside, and we decided to sit outside since we had my dog. It's a boujee diner for sure, and they had a somewhat limited menu option with some interesting specialty options. I got an iced dirty chai with oat milk which was okay. For breakfast I did the soft scramble egg toast which was on sourdough and came with cherry tomatoes, bacon crumbs, and chives. The sourdough was way too buttery for me, like it overpowered the rest of the meal. My friend did the strawberry rhubarb french toast with a side of 2 eggs over medium which he said was good. Service was slow though for not a super buy time, we had 3 different waiters. I'm not sure if that was because we were sitting outside and they weren't sure who was responsible but it took them awhile to come take our drink order, food order, and then my friend had to go inside to ask for the check. Cute cafe though, I wouldn't necessarily call it a diner though. It's cool, the building was an old car shop so I like how they remodeled it. There's a bakery attached to it too which is cool. Overall, food was okay but for the price probably wouldn't come back.

We were skiing at Massenutten and wanted a change of scenery. I looked at local options and Harrisonburg looked like a cute city. I chose Magpie diner because it was in the downtown area. I'm so grateful I did! We got free parking just outside. The menu was so great, lots of unique options. I had the fig and pig sandwich that was ham and fig jam. I also got an apple butter latte at the recommendation of our server. The clientele was mostly JMU students which was really cool. Our server also made recommendations of shops to check out while we were in town. Magpie also had a bakery! But that's a different review.

Obsessed is an understatement. Service - wonderful. Atmosphere - such vibes. Really beautiful place. The food is astounding! Cocktails - strong and delish. So perfect. Everything was just amazing and the food came out SO fast. Flavors on point! About to be a regular here for sure.

The chorizo breakfast bowl made my week. It was soooo yummy. My friends enjoyed their dishes as well. I always love the bright and productive environment when I catch breakfast or lunch at Magpie. Can't wait to come back.

    Fruit tart, cruller, scone.

We wanted to eat at the cafe on a Sunday afternoon on our road trip from Roanoke to DC, but there was too long a wait. Instead we picked up a fruit tart, double chocolate scone, a cruller, and a chocolate chip cookie from the bakery side. All were good. The crust on the tarte was flaky and buttery, but the creme was a little bland. The chocolate in the scone was delicious, though it was a tad dry. The cruller was tasty but a little sweet for my palate. I wish they hadn't run out of the chocolate croissant and I may have had buyers remorse about not getting the blueberry tarte...

I stopped at the bakery section of Magpie Diner and tried the tomato bacon danish. I wish it was on their website because it was delicious! I also got a lemon blueberry scone, which was another wonderful treat. Looking forward to trying more next time!

Magpies was a 50 minute trip from our holiday getaway spot. It was also one of the nearest attractions outside of the many caverns lining route 11. The wait was my least favorite. Definitely should have called ahead. Once we were seating everything moved quickly. Ordered and they served us shortly after. Food was good for the most part. The eggs weren't really my speed but I enjoyed the holiday cinnamon swirl French Toast and my husband had the blueberry pancakes. The little one pretty much ate her share of both our meals. I don't recall being offered a kids menu (or cup for that matter). Ambiance was great, super chill and relaxed. The loudest thing there was our baby of course especially after waiting an hour to eat. Everything was fine, folks were super courteous. Probably wouldn't double back, the menu boasted local pork options which wasn't great for our non-pork eating, preferably halal family but I am sure those items were just as delicious! Happy eating! Food- 8/10 Service- 8/10 Ambiance- 10/10

Came to Magpie on a Friday morning to fuel up before leaving Virginia after a week-long visit. There was a wait of about 25 minutes, but the wait is not a problem because right across the street is a collective of little shops/boutiques you can browse in the meantime. Once we were notified, we headed back and upon sitting down, I realized they have little blankets near the front you can grab if you're cold! (It was very cold outside and you got a chill every time the door opened and closed). I'm from Florida and had never seen anything like that before which I found very thoughtful! The menu is limited which is great for someone like myself who has trouble deciding what to order. Immediately I knew that I wanted the sweet heat maple biscuit. We also ordered the cinnamon swirl french toast with a side of two eggs, a cup of coffee and an americano. We had Jess as our server who was hustling the whole time due to being busy, yet never failed to check in on us. The coffee was just okay, which was a bit surprising. I figured since this seemed more like a "hip" and "modern" diner that the coffee would be a bit more robust, but tasted just a tad better than coffee you'd expect at a diner. Albeit it did warm me up, so I'm thankful for that. The sweet heat maple biscuit had such a unique combination of flavors. The honey mustard and maple chile drizzle worked surprisingly well together. The biscuit wasn't too dry, but the bacon could have been a bit more crispy. The homefries it came with were pretty standard. We also got the cinnamon swirl french toast which was pretty good. The only wish would be that they served real maple syrup, that really would have allowed this dish to shine as its not something you find in many places. With this dish we also ordered a side of eggs which were nice and fluffy, and garnished. Overall this meal came to $39.78. The most expensive item was the sweet heat biscuit which was $16, which was definitely overpriced. I dont know if I'd go back to Magpie diner if I was in the area again, HOWEVER, I would absolutely go to their bakery next door again which we visited after our meal. I had the best spinach and feta croissant of my life. They also made a very beautiful and tasty sourdough.

Came to have brunch with my son while visiting him at JMU and they definitely didn't disappoint. We did have to wait about 15 minutes but they texted me when our table was ready. You can go across the street and visit a cute little bookstore and other little shops while you wait. We ordered freshly squeezed OJ and it was amazing and very tasty. We ordered their spinach stuffed egg biscuit with potatoes and their latte and everything was just fresh and delicious. Will definitely visit again and highly recommend.

3 's for Magpie! Crisp. Clean. Coffee. This modern, well laid out diner is the perfect place to meet friends, have a mimosa or good cup of coffee, and get a delicious stack of pancakes. The service was good but the coffee was better. I'd come here again - but next time I'd try one of the homemade pastries from the bakery attached. Indoor and outdoor seating available with street parking.

This brunch place is attached to a bakery. It has abundant indoor and outdoor seating, the latter of which is nicely shaded for breakfast. My service experience was not great, as I waited a solid fifteen minutes at my table without so much as a water before someone finally got around to me. I choose to focus more on the food however. Options included sweet baked goods, but I was tempted by the option to get a vegan breakfast bowl. Flavor can come from freshness or from a ton of salt, and here it's really both, as a delicious mix of ingredients included both fresh greenery and some very salty soy-based fake meat. The ultimate result was pretty good in my book, and I can certainly think of a lot of times where I was on the road and wished I could find such a breakfast. Perusing the bakery while I was waiting for someone to show up with my check, I found a sea salt chocolate chip cookie among many other more interesting and creative options, and it delivered satisfaction.

Being the mom of a freshman who is 3hrs away learning how to navigate special days where you can't be present is new and can be a challenge. Of course I sent a care package full of treats, but I wanted her to also have something fresh. I ordered a box that came with six cupcakes, two cookies and half a dozen chocolate covered strawberries. This was a large enough box for her to share with her friends (highly doubt this happened. My girl loves sweets lol) or to keep her satisfied all weekend lol. Ordering was easy and delivery was a breeze. They checked in with me the day before to confirm the delivery time and even snapped a really cute picture of her holding her surprise. I definitely plan on visiting them in person on my next visit to the Burg. If you're looking for a few sweet treats, I'd highly recommend Sweet Joy's.

Scones, cookies, tarts, doughnuts, just keep the carbs and sugar coming. And upon my last visit to the Burg, I walked up on this place. Upon discovering that you have to place orders ahead of time (for a Friday/Saturday pickup), I immediately added a reminder note to place a order before returning. Thus my first interaction with the team here. Due to other commitments on Friday, and leaving early on Saturday, I knew if a Thursday pickup wasn't a option then I would not be enjoying anything. I sent a email and within 24 hours Alicia responded and graciously said they could make it work. Then, I just started clicking. 2 of this, 1 of that, wait what flavors are those? I might of been a touch hungry while ordering, but honestly that wouldn't have made a difference. Knowing the two doing the baking (take a moment to read the "About Us" page) and what they offered (e.g. butterscotch bourbon oatmeal cream pie, cinnamon streusel coffee cake, gooey butter cookies, sugar cookies-with sprinkles, strawberry lemon scones...wait, this was my order I picked up!), I came with a high level of anticipation. I walked up to the window, rang the bell, and held my breath. What if they had forgotten me? What if my order had somehow disappeared between Augusta and the Burg? What if...almost immediately Alicia opened the service window. My order was boxed and ready to go. No disrespect to the photos they share on social media handles, but that is just not enough to fully prepare one for the sight awaiting in that clear top on the box. The multi colors of the sugar cookie, the thickness and weight of the oatmeal cream pies (yes, I ordered 2), and of course the heavenly aroma of it all as one deeply inhales. To save myself the embarrassment of shamelessly eating everything like Cookie Monster in the Nabisco factory, I waited till I was alone to open this treasure trove of goodness. The butterscotch and bourbon, they go together like the final couple of a dating series finale. I am soooo glad I didn't eat a meal before this. That alone almost took me out for the afternoon. Again, the heftiness of the pie is a baking wonder. But oh the moistness (no, I am not afraid to use that word) of the pie and the creme. You don't need milk or coffee to wash it down. But I do suggest a cup of something on hand as you might choke inhaling it with such a swiftness. Then the cookie samples began. My compliment? Everything; flavor, texture, airness. My complaint? Not purchasing more. There should be a nudge that pops up on anything you only order one of that reads, "Are you sure you only want one?" But I digress. And also take a nap. Can't wait for my next order in March. I will add that they do walk up items that do not require pre order. They also have a far more extensive list of pastries (sweet and savory), breads, and custom cakes that you can order. If you are anywhere near Harrisonburg (home or passing through), treat yourself!
