I give 7 stars! Former garage. Everything is fresh. Must go in Harrisonburg. My picture speaks for itself.

What a lovely experience! I can easily see why there is a long wait here. We added our name to the list and were told it would be a 45 minute wait. Conveniently, there is a coffee shop, bookstore, and flower and gift shop across the street in a really new and cute warehouse to pass the time. We probably could've spent even longer in that cozy bookshop! Our meal consisted of strawberry tahini waffles, green poutine filled with fresh herbs, and a few made in house baked goods from their bakery. We also thoroughly enjoyed our mocktail (they offer a fun variety with fresh juices). The space is light and airy and looks into the bakery. They also have a wrap around diner style counter thats fun. Overall, a fabulous experience from start to finish!

Absolutely 1 of 2 best breakfast spots in Harrisonburg. Our other favorite is Heritage bakery... the theme of bakery lets you know that both places make all their bread and baked goods fresh! They don't gave thousands of dishes but every dish is thoughtful and each ingredient necessary to pull off the perfect bite. I think the fig pig tartine might be one of the best things I've eaten in a long time. The fig jam on freshly baked sourdough with fresh prosciutto and white cheddar, nutty arugula and the perfect sprinkle of lemon jest completes the dance in your palate. It's a must get. If you want something hearty... the sweet and hot breakfast biscuit will hit the spot. The jalapeño mixed with pear jam on a freshly baked biscuit... and the gooey white cheddar... so so good! Everything is fresh and delicious! A lot of breakfast places serve burnt industrial coffee... but they serve the coffee from Chestnut Ridge which is just across the street in the basement... but it's amazing! Fresh squeezed orange juice is pricey but delicious and the decor is beautiful! Get here before the doors open and wait in line or you'll have to wait a bit. But you can get on the waitlist and go to the stores across the street.

The Plus: Lovely bright dining space, friendly servers, and delightful food options, some with a Southern spin. I appreciated that they were able to give me half/half on the greens and roasted potatoes as sides for the frittata. The Okay: service fell a bit short at times. They forgot about my partner's coffee. But I'll chalk this up to them being really busy. My partner wasn't too crazy about his breakfast sandwich, stating that the bread used was a bit too fluffy. All in all, would definitely give them another try.

We were skiing at Massenutten and wanted a change of scenery. I looked at local options and Harrisonburg looked like a cute city. I chose Magpie diner because it was in the downtown area. I'm so grateful I did! We got free parking just outside. The menu was so great, lots of unique options. I had the fig and pig sandwich that was ham and fig jam. I also got an apple butter latte at the recommendation of our server. The clientele was mostly JMU students which was really cool. Our server also made recommendations of shops to check out while we were in town. Magpie also had a bakery! But that's a different review.

The food was delicious cannot deny that. The environment was super friendly ! The wait was a little long, but definitely worth it by the time food arrives. It did feel a little crowded! The place was extremely cute though !

strawberry rhubarb french toast with a side of 2 eggs over medium

My friend and I came here for brunch on a Tuesday around 12:30pm as we were passing through Harrisonburg. You can sit inside or outside, and we decided to sit outside since we had my dog. It's a boujee diner for sure, and they had a somewhat limited menu option with some interesting specialty options. I got an iced dirty chai with oat milk which was okay. For breakfast I did the soft scramble egg toast which was on sourdough and came with cherry tomatoes, bacon crumbs, and chives. The sourdough was way too buttery for me, like it overpowered the rest of the meal. My friend did the strawberry rhubarb french toast with a side of 2 eggs over medium which he said was good. Service was slow though for not a super buy time, we had 3 different waiters. I'm not sure if that was because we were sitting outside and they weren't sure who was responsible but it took them awhile to come take our drink order, food order, and then my friend had to go inside to ask for the check. Cute cafe though, I wouldn't necessarily call it a diner though. It's cool, the building was an old car shop so I like how they remodeled it. There's a bakery attached to it too which is cool. Overall, food was okay but for the price probably wouldn't come back.

Wow! F'ing good! The ambiance is relaxing. It has an open space with plenty of natural light, and good music. The staff is friendly and helpful. The food was great!! Very creative and flavorful! I will have to bring my family next time. They will love it.

Cinnamon Swirl French Toast and Smokey Succotash Frittata

Amazing stop during a weekend getaway to Shenandoah National Park. Arrived at 8:50 and was able to get a perfect seat indoors. Our server was so attentive and was able to accommodate any additions/substitutions to our orders. We ordered the Seasonal Frittata (Smokey Succotash Frittata) and the Cinnamon Swirl French toast. Both items were phenomenal. The French toast had a balanced flavor profile with both savory and sweet notes. The seasonal frittata was outstanding. The ritz cracker crunch was a wonderful addition to the custard egg and vegetable filling of the frittata. I would absolutely recommend Magpie to locals and visitors alike. The atmosphere is so minimalist with the charm and character of a local restaurant.

    Fruit tart, cruller, scone.

We wanted to eat at the cafe on a Sunday afternoon on our road trip from Roanoke to DC, but there was too long a wait. Instead we picked up a fruit tart, double chocolate scone, a cruller, and a chocolate chip cookie from the bakery side. All were good. The crust on the tarte was flaky and buttery, but the creme was a little bland. The chocolate in the scone was delicious, though it was a tad dry. The cruller was tasty but a little sweet for my palate. I wish they hadn't run out of the chocolate croissant and I may have had buyers remorse about not getting the blueberry tarte...

The chorizo breakfast bowl made my week. It was soooo yummy. My friends enjoyed their dishes as well. I always love the bright and productive environment when I catch breakfast or lunch at Magpie. Can't wait to come back.

I stopped at the bakery section of Magpie Diner and tried the tomato bacon danish. I wish it was on their website because it was delicious! I also got a lemon blueberry scone, which was another wonderful treat. Looking forward to trying more next time!

Little one checking out the menu!

And of course more shops equate to more locations while walking around to discover (then continuously support) all things caffeinated. And such it was when I first visited the 'Burg over a year ago. I wondered streets and alleyways in search of a pour over, Americano, and of course a bag (or three) of beans to take home. And in doing so I stumbled upon Chestnut. At that time they were next door to Magpie (which was where I was headed) so I popped in. Chemex in use, beans being stirred in the back (part of the roasting process), and an aroma that feels like a warm blanket to my soul. Since that first visit they have moved over to Liberty Mercantile (across the street and in the basement) and expanded their space. But their quality remains top notch. I say that on behalf of their pour overs, espresso, and lattes. And beside it, their customer service. Always a smiling face and willingness to chat about all things Harrisonburg. I highly recommend you stop in and try them for yourself!

I got a great recommendation on a Mexican blend, which was only roasted a few days before my purchase. They were even actively roasting beans when we were there! I decided to get a freshly made latte while I was there for the ride home, and needless to say, the coffee was absolutely phenomenal! I ordered the El Diablo Latte, and it was phenomenal. The cayenne and ancho brought a gentle warmth, the cinnamon and vanilla rounded it out, and the chocolate and espresso tied it all together beautifully. Spiced, smooth, and perfectly balanced. I also had a V60 pour-over of their seasonal Costa Rican single origin, and it was incredibly clean and expressive. I genuinely tasted the pomegranate and hibiscus notes, with a subtle cocoa finish. Bright without being sharp -- just a really well-executed cup. The triple ginger scone was the perfect pairing with the latte -- tender inside, lightly crisp outside, and warmly spiced without overpowering. Service was friendly and knowledgeable, the space was welcoming, and the quality across the board was top-tier. My only suggestion? Stickers. I'd absolutely put one on my laptop. Highly recommend.
