I had an excellent experience at The Crucible Coffee Roasters in Staunton. Everything -- from the drinks to the atmosphere -- felt thoughtful and dialed in. I ordered the El Diablo Latte, and it was phenomenal. The cayenne and ancho brought a gentle warmth, the cinnamon and vanilla rounded it out, and the chocolate and espresso tied it all together beautifully. Spiced, smooth, and perfectly balanced. I also had a V60 pour-over of their seasonal Costa Rican single origin, and it was incredibly clean and expressive. I genuinely tasted the pomegranate and hibiscus notes, with a subtle cocoa finish. Bright without being sharp -- just a really well-executed cup. The triple ginger scone was the perfect pairing with the latte -- tender inside, lightly crisp outside, and warmly spiced without overpowering. Service was friendly and knowledgeable, the space was welcoming, and the quality across the board was top-tier. My only suggestion? Stickers. I'd absolutely put one on my laptop. Wow, what a nice coffee shop in Staunton, VA. Stopped in while I was visiting my sister from out of town. This place has delicious coffee & plenty of seating. Nice coffee shop for a quick drink or to sit down and do some work. I wish there was a visible menu somewhere. When standing in line, I had to wait to get to the front to finalize my order. Unfortunately they don't train their barista and the coffee we ordered was awful. The milk wasn't steamed properly and it tasted bad.

Came to Staunton for a quick break to eat and rest. I saw Crucible Coffee Roasters pop up on my Yelp and Google as a good option for coffee so decided to stop by. It is located a little further from the exit/entrance of the highway. There is a good amount of parking outside. The cafe had a cozy vibe with the barista station set up in the center and seating on the edges of the building. I got an oat milk latte (hot) and it was pleasant. Yes, yes, and yes! Finally some good coffee. We had been on a road trip and while I do like my Dunkin, I really couldn't go for another cup of their coffee. I searched for a local shop and this one popped up. There were so many great reviews and now I know why. I ordered the honey lavender latte and it did not disappoint. It was smooth, rich and delish. Not a bad cup of coffee, but far from what I'd expect from a small batch roaster. Dark roast is...well, not really. I want that nice, syrupy liquorice hint of a French roast or a dark Sumatran. What I get is not that, but it's not hateful. Baristas rarely make eye contact and the service seems a bit on the not-so-friendly side. I've been served day old pastries at fresh pastry prices but I will say that when their pastries are fresh they're bangin--I freaking love their danish when it's not old. The space inside is nice and welcoming. You can hang out for hours and poach wifi or, if the weather is fair, enjoy the creek side outdoor seating. My biggest gripe with Crucible is how they sell their whole bean coffee. They sell a 12oz "pound" for like $16. That's a huge ripoff considering that a similar POUND bag of organic, single source beans at Traeger Brothers in Afton goes for the same price. I find better service and a whole lot more food options at other coffee spots in Staunton, but if I'm in need of a decent cup of coffee, and I'm willing to roll the dice on their limited pastry selection, well, Crucible it is. It's veteran owned, which, if that matters to you I guess that's cool (it's a turnoff for me because I'm not a military rah-rah person). I'd rather they focus their energy on crafting a better dark roast and upping their food game. TLDR: decent coffee and good espresso drinks. Limited menu which can also be stale. Service borders on hostile at times. Whole bean prices are obscenely high. Wifi is free and the space is nice. Overall: meh. read more

What a beautiful coffee shop in the heart of downtown Staunton... it's not in Mainstreet but a little walk or drive... It is a legit roaster and they sell their own bags of roasted coffees. They offer pour over coffees and lattes but it's hard to find coffee shops that will offer Single Origin pour overs at this price. The decor and atmosphere is open and beautiful and it's worth driving over to enjoy these beautiful cups of coffee. read more

*This review is for the service alone. I hope the owner will see this and can speak to their staff about customer service. The woman taking orders was pleasant but that's where it ended. She let me know a pour over would take 5 min, of course, no prob. 10 min later I wanted to check my order was received and got an snippy response that it was coming from the woman who seemed irritated I was interrupting her conversation with her friend sitting at the bar. Ok... not great but I still had hope for a good experience as this was my first visit. I receive my cup. 15-20 min later. After my date has finished his coffee and we have eaten all our Muffin(which was good I will say) I receive it filled to the BRIM! "Oh I asked for room" I say. The barista comes back after pouring out HALF of my $5 cup of coffee that took 15 min. . Will not be returning. Too bad, the space is beautiful and the coffee was good. *the barista did offer to fill my cup more but when she found out it was a pour over gave me a blank stare. I swung by here while up in Staunton dealing with some family matters. I'm from Richmond, so I'm a bit spoiled on high quality coffee shops and cafes, and Crucible met those standards. I got an oat milk latte that was excellent - well made, not too sweet, and well-pulled espresso shots. I also got a blueberry muffin that was exceptional - it had a crumble crust on the top that was like having a cookie at the same time. The interior was pretty cool but felt a bit unorganized and messy (read: not dirty, more just cluttered). Service was unremarkable - nothing to complain or rave about. When I stay overnight in Staunton this is my first stop in the morning! Crucible is a great coffee spot that's located in a quiet corner of downtown Staunton. (From my experience it seems that all of Staunton is quiet, but what I mean to say is it's not in the heart of downtown). There's plenty of parking and outdoor space to bring the dogs and sit outside. I believe they're closed inside (I was there second week of March) but they have a window you can order at! I love their specialty drinks -- I can't resist a fancy latte -- but I've also been impressed with their beans. I did a 3-month subscription (coffee + vinyl!) and was very happy with all the beans I got to try. If I lived here I would get coffee from them every day. read more

First of all, this shop is gorgeous. The murals and decor draw you in. It also seems to be a magnet for Queer folx, which made me feel right at home. There is a plethora of outdoor and indoor seating that's comfortable and inviting. The staff were friendly and helpful, and our drinks were made exactly as ordered, and very quickly. We didn't order pastries but the looks delicious. My one wish would be that they offer coconut milk for those of us who are allergic to nuts/soy/dairy/grains. read more

This place has done a really job adapting to the COVID environment. Everything is super distanced and safe, and they offer ample outside seating. They roast their own beans, and sell a wide variety of them in whole bean bags. I'm sure they will also grind them if you need ground beans. If you aren't sure which roast is for you, I highly recommend getting a pour over. I have tried their Burundi and Ethiopian pour overs, end think I prefer the Ethiopian. It's probably their lightest and most fruity roast, although it seems like they tend to prefer darker roasts. Of the Ethiopian roast I've had, theirs was one of the darkest. That said, I still enjoyed their coffee and am eager to try more! read more
