I've been to this local coffee shop a few times and have enjoyed. It's a busy UVA student haunt off The Corner. The small gabled building that sits on a dead end road by train tracks is cute. There is no street parking. However garage parking is across the street. Staff was friendly as I walked in. I ordered an ice coffee variety that was pretty good. Right off the corner and a convenient way for students to get some boujee coffee. The place is very nice to sit and work in- they have an entire upstairs area as well as patio. Apparently all the pastries come from cou cou ra chou which is the best in town. Definitely think they should expand this collection though because the food wasn't my favorite. Grit is a hip coffeehouse. So much so that you might not be greeted if you're milling around the register.  Now to the nitty gritty. Grit Coffee has a variety of seating options: inside, on the sidewalk next to Elliewood, outside on the back deck. I was really fond of the deck since I was able to absorb some sunshine and admire the verdant veggie garden down below. From skimming other reviews, apparently there's an upstairs too which I totally missed.  I ordered off the fall drink menu, sipping on a small Fog Cabin ($3.50) which was cinnamon spice tea with some maple syrup and steamed milk in there. Mmm. Despite the t-shirt weather, I was getting cozy, cooler weather, lost-in-the-red-orange-yellow-leaved-woods feels from my warm beverage. I also had a bite of an Albemarle Baking Company morning glory muffin, and it seemed delightful. Be sure to put your used dishes in the tub or you might get mildly chided about that. read more

Stumbled upon this spot on a recent visit to Charlottesville. The staff were kind, friendly and chatty -- which is so refreshing (not always having the same experience in DC, where I live full-time.) I even got to have a conversation with one of the baristas about what she was studying in school at UVA. I love it! Great staff makes all the difference to me. I ordered a large iced coffee. It was strong, smooth and absolutely hit the spot on a hot afternoon after a long drive down 29 South. This spot was tucked away, off the main area of the corner. There was a bit of outdoor seating. It seemed like a perfect spot to catch up with friends or get some work done. I've gotten this lavender honey iced latte multiple times this week so I thought I'd review it because it's so good. It has a subtle lavender taste, not to strong but you can taste it. The prices here are comparable to Starbucks, which is amazing considering that Grit is local. There's paid parking nearby, but if you don't have to drive, walking is a better alternative. read more

The coffee is pretty solid for a Corner joint. I'm pretty impressed with the consistently friendly service, delicious cold brew, and the chill atmosphere. Doesn't hurt that this place is self-professed dog friendly and that on occasion my dogs have been allowed inside as I wait in line. As far as coffee goes, I'd recommend the cold brew or the the iced mocha which is a go-to for hot humid Virginia days. Their espresso is generally well made, smooth and mixed well in your drink of choice. If you're wondering about the interior: I'd describe it as functionally trendy with wood floors, a chalk board menu, and plenty of mason jars to go around. It's a mix between the perfect place to study or meet with friends. The first floor is rectangular with the serving counter running parallel with the seating which can make it crowded on high traffic days. However, if you're looking for a bit more quiet, I'd advise going upstairs. The space above tends to be quieter with space to spread out. All in all, this is one of my preferred go-to spots for coffee, especially because it has a great outdoor patio for those mild Cville days. The people here are generally easy going and the coffee is refreshing. read more

Stumbled upon this place at a dead end after we parked the car - looks like they've rebranded to "Grit Coffee", which I quite enjoy. Small coffee shop, but plenty of options. Their cold brew (with peppermint syrup) was delicious. We bought their medium Guatemalan whole bean coffee - I'll be sure to update my review once we try that! Great pricing, only one guy working there, but he was very helpful. Wasn't very crowded but I could see that it was nice and quiet, which allowed for people to get some work done. Great cup of coffee and tea.. not too much of a selection in Charlottesville for coffee houses, but this one takes the cake. Definitely the best I've experienced in this town. Their staff was really friendly and let us in, even after they were technically closed for the night. Ah Para Coffee, my favorite study spot on grounds. I'm usually here 3/7 days a week. My go to: 12 oz. of dark roast coffee posted up next to a bright window on the second floor looking out on blue skies, green trees, and the train tracks. I love it. Para Coffee has a great ambience. It's always warm and cozy, perfect for cold winter days, and I love the wooden decor. I brought my friend here, an average Joe, one afternoon and he described it as the "most hipster place" he's been to during his time at UVA so there's that. I love coffee shops that ask you "for here or to go?" and Para Coffee is certainly one of those places (hem hem Starbucks). They have a wide assortment of mugs, so it's always a little exciting to see which mug I'll end up with this time. As for the coffee itself? I'm embarrassed to say I actually haven't ventured that much through its coffee selection. I've had an Americano a few times but mostly opt for dark roast brewed coffee instead. The Americano was rather disappointing and not as deep or complex as I am used to. It tasted like a medium roast brewed coffee. The dark roast is great. A lot of depth and flavor with the perfect amount of acidity. I take my coffee black but I love that they have brown sugar as an option. I've also tried the iced earl grey tea which, of course, is served in a major jar. It's very refreshing and crisp, but was lighter than I anticipated. Para Coffee also sells Sweet Haus cupcakes, which are delicious as well. But above all, I keep on going back to Para Coffee for the perfect study environment it is. It feels much more relaxed than the library. However the internet is really shoddy and unpredictable. read more

My friend and I ordered coffee to-go from here recently. The coffee itself was decent, but the service was lacking. We ordered and waited by the end of the counter. After we waited for a while, we noticed that the baristas had all stopped working (were turned towards each other, texting and chatting), but we still hadn't received our coffees. One barista finally noticed me staring and then told us that our coffees had been placed down in an area of the counter that was hidden from our view. It was nice how they hadn't announced anything when they placed it down, so our coffees got cold. Go to their location downtown if you really want Grit. Their service is 100 times better. read more

I am a coffee shop fanatics and a sucker for beautiful interior design - just so you have the background before reading my review. Drink- I got a cold brew - my first cold brew too. It was quite good; cant tell if this is exceptionally good as it's my first, but I am satisfied. Interiors - mehhh!! They've got plenty of space upstairs - perfect for working/studying but I think they could have done a better job with the space. It looks bland, old, and dusty. The sofas are even torn, the tables are crooked (at least the one we sat). This space has a lotttt of potential to look significantly better with a few changes to the furniture (white tables, get rid of the sofas, maybe a few hanging lights). I understand there is a budget involved but something to consider. read more

I HATE THAT I HAD TO GIVE ONE STAR! I will never step foot in this place again. I was walking with my service dog who did not have his vest on. Sorry but just because you have a service dog does not mean he has to wear it every time you leave home, ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE ON A WALK! Not all Service dogs WORK 24/7!I have gone in this place several times before with my off the clock service dog and never had a problem until today! I was told that only service dogs are allowed in. I told them he is a service dog. I had to leave. In addition, there is no sign stating only service dogs allowed. Go to STARBUCKS! The are very kind and understanding regarding dogs. I discovered Para Coffee on yelp and from the great reviews, I decided to try Para coffee out today. The ambiance of the place is very nice and cozy. However, the place was packed and b/c it was super small, I felt claustraphobic. Not only that, it was VERY hot inside. It felt like they didn't turn on the AC or there was just too much body heat inside :( Nevertheless, I ordered my medium-sized iced Vanilla Latte ( for a total of 4.09). Pricey but around the same price that you would pay for a cup of Latte at Starbucks. My expectation of Para Coffee and their drinks wasn't not very high to begin with b/c i've had my share of bad epxeriences in trying new coffeeshops and each time, i've gone back to Starbucks. After about a 5 minute wait (there was quite a few people a head of me in line), I received my drink and I was pleasantly surprised! :) It was one of the best vanilla lattes I've had, maybe even better than the ones I've had at Starbucks (Starbucks tend to be inconsistent at times). From my experience today, Para Coffee is definitely worth a try. Though I've only tried one drink, I would go back for more. Hopefully, they are all as delicious :) read more

Besides the lofty prices, Grit is a UVA favorite, serving a wide variety of drinks and local bites in a charming, friendly, and convenient setting. Whenever I've come here, the staff couldn't be more inviting; they greet you at the door, remain patient and attentive when ordering, and quickly change out empty creme containers and dirty dish racks when notified by customers. Their coffee is also pretty good; I usually order an iced latte-pretty basic-and it comes out consistently delicious. If you're hungry, they also have great food options from around Charlottesville. For example, I've ordered their breakfast tacos from Brazos tacos, which have saved me on more than one occasion when late for classes or meetings (don't tell my parents!) Even if you aren't in the coffee mood, their upstairs and outside dining areas are great for studying, chatting, or enjoying the seasonal weather. Overall, Grit gives a really nice ambiance away from the traditional UVA chaos and dining scene, serving up local coffee and delicious food.
