I was hesitant to write this review--not because it's not deserved, but because I didn't want to share this hidden gem. However, Bearrr Appetit truly deserves the spotlight. While returning from a family mountain weekend getaway, we needed a spot for a late breakfast/early lunch. Just off the main highway, Bearrr Appetit appeared tucked into the beautiful Lydia Mountain Lodge. The drive up is scenic but very narrow, so expect to slow down and enjoy the drive. The lodge itself is cozy and rustic with a touch of elegance. The actual dining area feels intimate with gorgeous mountain views appearing both inside and with outdoor seating. Outdoor seating is highly recommended--though it was raining during our visit and mostly wet, with some covered tables and seating. Service was excellent from start to finish. The staff was warm and attentive, and Sidney, who served us, was especially accommodating and friendly. Everyone that was working seemed to be focused on service. As for the food--it was fantastic. We ordered a mix of breakfast and lunch items (eggs, biscuits and gravy, pancakes, sandwiches), and everything exceeded expectations. Overall, Bearrr Appetit combines breathtaking views, great service, and delicious food in a charming mountain setting. It's a true hidden gem worth the detour. Three stars is based on surrounding natural beauty and quality of food. Over vibe of the place and attentiveness of staff is just off. The inn in which the restaurant is located is in a beautiful spot, it just has the feel of a place that offers you a good deal if you listen to a time share spiel. Our server was incredibly friendly, but incredibly inattentive. We hit right at the end of a Sunday brunch rush, and the place was virtually empty, so it actually more amusing than annoying and how little the staff seemed to care about the few tables that were seated. Food was actually excellent. Our party had salads and sandwiches and it was all very good. If the service could get it together, this could easily be a 4-star spot. read more

The food was hilariously bad. I'll start with the good - the lodge is lovely and the view is beautiful. But clearly they just skate on that because the food is beyond disappointing. For a place where people come to unplug and likely don't leave the property, they really need to up their food game. Nevermind that they host weddings. We were just in for a wedding this past weekend, and we had two meals at the restaurant that weren't a part of the wedding festivities. One was terrible, the other, we learned from previous mistakes and ordered something they couldn't screw up. The first meal we had asked what the "seasonal vegetable" was - and were told it was green beans. When it's advertised as a seasonal vegetable, you'd assume it would be fresh and in season, right? Nope. Canned green beans. The salmon was cooked fine, but it was advertised as a glaze and instead it just had jarred sauce slathered all over it. My husband ordered a club sandwich and asked for cheddar instead of swiss. It came with shredded cheese, which was just funny at that point. Lunch the next day we both got a BLT because it's so simple it's impossible to screw up. It was fine, despite being bathed in mayo and needing to remove a lot of it. The wedding food was only passable because the couple got a ton of food from elsewhere to supplement. What was provided by Lydia Mountain Lodge was rough. It's such a beautiful place, they really need better. read more

Nice ambiance, poor service, very limited beverage selection, pretty good food. The restaurant is in a big lodge on a gorgeous wooded property with fantastic views from the deck. The wine list consists of common varietals followed by prices, like "Sauvignon blanc ... $7." It says nothing about any of the wines, like where they come from, their vintage, or label. Our waitress had no idea whether they were local or from another state or country. When asked about the Cabernet Franc she said she'd check and upon return informed us it was "local." Nothing more. So sad in a burgeoning wine country. We waited over 40 minutes for a burger and a brisket sandwich and fries. Our waitress never stopped by to apologize for the delay or let us know when our dinner might be coming. When our meal finally arriver, the food was very tasty, the burger medium-rare as ordered. The presentation though was nothing special. The waitress never came by afterwards to check and see if everything was okay or if we wanted more wine, which we did, but didn't get a chance to order. Do these restaurants not care enough about making a sale to teach their wait staff to ask their customers? read more

If you are out at Shenandoah national park, you might pass by Lydia mountain. I have SO many times and finally decided to check out whats beyond the bigfoot store at the bottom of it. At the top is the Lydia lodge which also includes the bearrr appetit restaurant. Ive come here twice, for their breakfast and lunch menu. They are serving up some delicious bites. I prefer the breakfast slightly to the lunch because of the prices and portions are better. Besides the food, even better is the beautiful backdrop of the mountains! The patio is must when the weather is nice. It's also dog friendly!! read more

Service was great! Scenic views are beautiful. The cheese curds were addicting. The rest of the food was just average. I got the burger and it wasn't that great compared to other burgers at the same price point. My wife got the brisket. Admittedly, I'm pretty harsh critic on brisket but it wasn't worth the cost and it was a bit tough with little flavor. Maybe the chef was having an off day. The dessert was good. The breakfast was amazing , big portions so flavorful. I got this coffee hot chocolate drink with whipped cream and it was just what I needed to start my morning. The sausage takes home made and delicious. The pancakes were so fluffy and the maple syrup is my favorite so far. Our server was nothing but polite and so kind ,you can just hear it in her voice. Amazing experience. Only complaint would be the sandwich was a bit small but it did come with a nice salad (not pictured). The breakfasts seem to be the highlight and the majority of the breakfasts are under $10 (I just didn't want breakfast). I came after 11, right after the breakfast rush, and it was so nice and quiet and beautiful. Everyone else outside was also quietly polite and we were all just enjoying the amazing view. I will have to find time to make my way back here while in VA, it's one of the very few places near Shenandoah that really showcase the beauty of the mountains with some great food and friendly service. read more

What a neat and unexpected little find. My family was heading home and looking a place to eat and we found this beautiful lace on yelp. As we drove up my wife and son were convinced I was taking them somewhere to murder them. It's not exactly on the beaten path but worth it. Melissa was a great waitress and extremely attentive. The views from the restaurant were beautiful. Our Breakfast was very good, fresh house fries, French toast and omelets. As we left my wife, son, and his best friend were all commenting on how happy they were we had found this place. read more

Bearrr Appetit has it all- delicious food, from the local pasture raised beef burgers to omelets made with local eggs, incredible views of the valley and mountains, and friendly service! Came here for breakfast and dinner while staying nearby. Both times we ate on the patio overlooking the mountain - a gorgeous view. The menu was more wide ranging than I'd expected and overall reasonably priced. Everything my group had was tasty. WAY TOO EXPENSIVE. I paid $14,50 for a cheeseburger and a salad. Nothing special about either of them. The restaurant is in at a lodge in the middle of the woods about 30 miles from any other place to eat. I suppose that is why they can charge so much. The poor guests staying there have nowhere else to eat. As to the wonderful views mentioned in other reviews there is nothing to see but trees. I WILL NEVER EAT THERE AGAIN., read more

Updating review as we had a very poor experience this past Sunday (Father's Day 6/18/23). When we arrived at 9:50am it was not terribly busy, but there were only two waitstaff present for the 7-8 tables with customers (one a large party). We were seated outside and after about 10mins our drink orders were taken. Another 10mins passed before our drinks came and we ordered food at that time (two orders of pancakes and an omelette). We then proceeded to wait.. and wait... and wait. After 40mins our server (who had not been back to our table) came and apologized for the delay and said our food would ready shortly. Another 30mins then passed with no sign of her or our food. Our kids by this point were antsy and hungry. We found our server to ask if our food was coming before leaving only to be told our order was "in the kitchen". She then proceeded to bring us a plate with 4 BURNT biscuits for "while we wait", so we decided to leave. In the meantime, tables that were seated well after us had gotten their meals. We were there over 1hr and 40mins. No food. No drink refills. My husband asked to speak with the manager on our way out, but the server said no one was available. Another server directed him to the chef who apologized, but apparently didn't have the order either. They scrambled and gave us to-go boxes, but when our original server handed us the food said, "I probably wouldn't eat that" !!! Another server apologized and said they'd have the manager contact my husband. It's been 36hrs and no one has followed up. We try to support local businesses whenever possible. Unfortunately, we probably won't be back to Bear Apetit in the near future. We appreciate everyone is short-staffed these days. However, the lack of service here was an avoidable issue and not one we care to repeat. read more

What a locals spot and I say that in a heart warming way. You can tell the locals know the owner and staff and it was so great to feel the welcoming vibe. Tons of parking and the restaurant is on the bottom floor of the lodge so enter from the main lobby. Gorgeous woodwork everywhere and the staff were very friendly and informative letting us know there was a wait since it was fireworks night. Or server greeted us right away to say he'd be back. He was so friendly and took all of our orders. Lots of hugs from the locals to the staff which was so sweet to see. Our drinks came out really quickly and our kiddo was a bit hyper but people were chatting with us from another table so I knew it was family friendly. I ordered a glass of rose and all their wine is $6 but it's each of the varieties but the menu does not tell you what's the names are, only Rose. I should have got a local beer! Atmosphere is relaxing and beautiful in the Greene County mountains. Beer selection is pretty good. There is a good variety of food and everything I have had has been good. It's much cooler there than in Charlottesville, so a great retreat on a super hot day. Places for the kids to play while you're waiting. read more

Absolutely wonderful. We arrived knowing nothing. We were greeted by the friendliest welcoming cat on the sidewalk leading up to the lodge while I took a phone call. Christmas decorations and fading twilight made the perfect conditions for warm glow and gorgeous view. We strolled around the beautifully appointed lodge- each room its own carefully crafted personality. We were invited to go in and check them out! Then we went downstairs to Bearrr Appetit. Our very attentive server answered our questions and checked in with us frequently. I ordered the honey pot, greens, and house salad. Honey pot is a half chicken with a great crust of herbed skin and a oat of honey butter served on it- spectacular. Greens were great and salad was perfect. For dessert I got the bread pudding. My spouse and I traveled 30 to 40 minutes to eat here based on some pretty decent reviews. Unfortunately, our experiences were pretty much the opposite of what we read. Granted, there was a wedding going on at the same time we stopped to eat, but the restaurant was 2/3 empty and there were plenty of servers, it's just that nobody really seemed to know what they were doing except for the young lady who first greeted us. After being seated, we waited at least 10 to 15 minutes for somebody to bring us a menu and even then that only occurred because I got up and walked over to three servers who were all standing behind the cash register talking amongst themselves and asked for one. Even then it took several minutes for someone to bring them over. When the server brought the menus, she tried to justify "not bringing one for the first 10 minutes we were there" because they weren't sure "how long it was going to take our food to get ready because of the wedding and that we might have to wait for up to 30 minutes for our meal". I didn't really understand what this had to do with ignoring us for 10 minutes and thought that if this was the case they probably should've mentioned it when we first walked in. She then left us to check on the "back up" in the kitchen and when she returned told us we were in luck that there was no back up at all. We ended up opting for two appetizers, neither of which was impressive in the least (see below). The first to arrive was a relatively tasteless onion and mushroom dip with warm pita chips. My guess is that these were fried because some of them were much browner and crispier than the others (although they may also have been baked just prior to bringing them out). Unfortunately their taste overpowered the dip, especially the ones that were really brown. Next to arrive was the short rib appetizer which looked super great. Unfortunately, they seemed to have way more fat than meat. The third picture accompanying this review wasn't even all of the fat that was in my serving because I know I ate quite a bit of it in addition to what meat there was. After we finished eating we had another long wait to get our check, again, even though I asked for it several times. At one point I turned around and again three servers were huddled around the cash register. At least one of them appeared to be counting her tips (I'm pretty sure her shift was ending). Eventually, the young lady at the register called over to me and told me it might be faster if I were to simply walk up to the register and pay there rather than waiting on someone to bring me my bill, which I did. I will say that appearance wise, it is an exceptionally nice venue but I think the wait staff needs a little more experience. read more

I had coffee (we were trying to catch brunch) and crab cake sliders with french fries. Thought the crab cakes were pretty good; not amazing, but good for sure. The menu should be a little broader in my opinion. Since we missed brunch, the lunch menu seemed to have few options. The sliders were an appetizer I added fries to; my better half just got sliders because even though she was hungry, she didn't care for the sides and didn't want a sandwich. The fries had some sort of seasoning on it that made me wonder if they were frozen (I assume now that they were). That said, the lodge looks new and like they are still trying to figure out what works for them. I would like to return sometime and see how they are doing. read more

Although our experience with our stay at Lydia Lodge was incredible, I am sadly unable to say the same regarding our dining experience at Bearr Appetit. I'd like to mention that I have worked in various restaurants, bars, and food service in the state of Virginia and North Carolina. I understand the demands of being a server, host, bartender and I tend to be very patient in the event of long waits.  The first thing I noticed when we sat to dine for dinner on 6/16 was that there were only 2 maybe 3 servers on the floor for 10 active tables, I did count all of the tables. The young woman acting as host was visibly very stressed out so we offered to sit in an unoccupied area and assured her that waiting a couple of minutes for menus was fine. Over 35 minutes went by and we decided to go back inside to sit again because we were forgotten about. Through our dining experience we experienced long waits which were fine, and expected. When our food came out mine was completely wrong from what I had requested ( due to food allergy )  from more than 1 of the servers and I waited another 15 minutes for it to be corrected. By this point, my partner had finished eating and was waiting on me to begin. Though this was not ideal we understood that you all were short staffed and it would be okay. Not once were we offered a free dessert, 10% discount, anything at all would have been appreciated, especially because we were guests of the lodge. Though we had a bad experience, on 6/17 we decided to go back to enjoy a bottle of wine and a slice of cake at the end of the evening to share. The servers were more concerned about the dirty tables and stray cats  than helping the guests who were there to eat, resulting in an extremely long wait for drinks + dessert. Our order was taken twice, once by a younger woman, and once by Wendy. We loved Wendy and she was fantastic BUT there was a clear line of miscommunication between her and the other server. As we ordered a bottle and were brought a glass (that we did not ask for), we were brought 2 slices of cake (we had only ordered one and disclosed that we'd like to share it). After we explained to Wendy what we had actually ordered, she brought out our wine and check. We were charged for everything that touched the table that we DID NOT even order. We decided it would just be best to pay to avoid any animosity with complaining as they were getting ready to close. Again, we were never offered anything for our troubles, which would've made up for the entire experience.  This left a very bad taste for us, as much as we wanted to enjoy it.. we just weren't able to. As I stated, I have worked in food service for a long time and I am more than understanding when it comes to delays and mix ups. We hope to visit Lydia Lodge again and we will refer all of our friends there for their stay, but Bearr Appetit needs to do better if they want guests to enjoy the entire experience as a whole. read more

It was my birthday and I thought it would be fun to go have dinner and listen to music! It was horrible! It took an hour and a half to get our meal! We ordered 2 steaks which were definitely not 24 oz or even close and very fatty and tough! My hamburger was dry and tasteless, the mash potatoes were cold and the fries were definitely frozen and coated! The music was too loud! And it was very overpriced!
