This hidden gem is right Main Street in Front Royal. Nestled in a building that has a brewery, we stopped in after enjoy some lunch and beer. The wonders were very generous and helpful. They offer local drinks, preserves, jams, desserts of all sorts, and homemade sauces. Honestly, it was really hard to choose something to try. The owners spent a few minutes with us goin over their menu and everything looked SO good. We settled on the Strawberry Shortcake and the owner's own concoction the Nutty Professor. The short cake was ALL homemade (the sauce, whipped cream, and sponge cake). The cake was very light and refreshing and not too sweet. This was HANDS down the best Strawberry shortcake I've ever had. We ate the entire thing in the car. The nutty professor is very unique and SO good. It's very rich but is a cross between a peanut cup and a snickers combined. My husband was attempting to go to the Vibrissa Beer next door with his boss, but they got distracted by the smells of cinnamon and deliciousness coming from here. This place smelled good enough to distract two grown men from beer... Hubs thoughtfully brought home some lemon bars and chocolate whoopie pies and they were both hands down the best I have ever had. The lemon bars were flaky and crisp on the bottom, but soooooooo creamy on top. Delicious. The whoopie pies were awesome. The filling is just... better. It is almost coconutty. How lucky was I to come in at exactly the right time and get a hot fresh pecan sticky bun?? To set the scene, it was about 3:30 in the afternoon on a Saturday. We had just got done having a few beers down the hall at Front Royal Brewing. Walking back out to the car and then BAM a captivating whiff of something so sweet and beautiful. We popped into here after lunch and grabbed a couple of treats for dessert and breakfast. It's a quaint spot that has a variety of jams, jellies, hot sauces, and all kinds of local goodies. They also of course have a variety of baked goods. While there were a lot of things I wanted to try, I went with their Drunken Professor, a peanut butter and chocolate pie with bourbon. This was a good dessert--we nuked it for a bit to get it a bit gooey and it was quite tasty. It had whole peanuts in there in addition to the peanut butter but I think they should've been (more) finely cut. The crust was very crumbly and overall tasty. The cinnamon role was delicious. It wasn't overly sweet, had great, fluffy texture w/ the right amount of cinnamon and sugar and a cream cheese frosting. Again, popping it in the microwave for a few seconds was delicious. There is a slogn on their door that states "Just like grandma used to make" and they are not lying, love must be an ingredient because you can actually taste it in the cinnamon rolls. The triple berry connamon roll was made with Maine Blueberries, the best money can buy, blackberries and strawberries. I'm not the first, nor will I be the last person to talk about the cinnamon rolls here. They are TO.DIE.FOR!! Especially when you get them straight out of the oven! (You'll definitely smell them as soon as you walk in). The icing is absolute perfection and just melts in your mouth. We picked up a couple of them, along with their sticky pecan bun (also delicious) and enjoyed it outside the gazebo area in the beautiful autumn weather. I have no pictures of anything that i bought from here and that is because I ate them. They were delicious and I do not feel bad about this. Walking into the store you felt like a trip back in time one of the owners was sitting at a table talking to a goo friend of his and had such great things to say about the baker and her baked goods. Well the baker was his wife! But marital love aside he was speaking so highly of her because everything there was delicious. The whole place smelled like sugar and love and i wanted all of it. When we walked in we were greeted by a lovely older gentleman who told us all about the delicious items they had and then called his wife from the back. A cute little bakery! Welcoming vibe and superb employees! But unfortunately, the pastries I tried were not to my liking. I tried the pecan roll and the chocolate pastry that seem to be their selling product. I was expecting a 1000 cal pecan roll, but it was rather light. Some people like it that way better, but I prefer my pecan roll to be drench with the good stuff. The chocolate pasty honestly seemed a bit bland to me - but my friend who got the same pastry absolutely loved it, so to each of its own. The owners were real nice, helpful, and welcoming as we entered their store. It was like we had stepped into their home. The store reminded me as if we walked into a farmhouse kitchen. The bakery had a fresh aroma of baked goods. They offered us to try their homemade cinnamon rolls, in which they only make on special occasions. It was delicious. The roll was moist and the frosting was really tasty. My son stated the frosting tasted liked a milkshake. The homemade cookie was made fresh and packaged to keep fresh. Down Home Comfort Bakery is owned by Ms. Maureen and her husband, Mr. Keith; this bakery has only been around a little less than a year (their 1-year anniversary is on 7/11), and they offer pies, cookies, brownies, cupcakes, breads, and Garber's ice cream (a local ice cream company based out of Winchester). When we walked in, we were greeted right away by Mr. Keith :D The hubs and I each got a scoop of Garber's ice cream - I had the Coffee Toffee Crunch (coffee ice cream with bits of toffee throughout; Ms. Maureen asked me if I would like to be topped off with her homemade chocolate sauce - UM, YES, OF COURSE! The chocolate sauce wasn't overly sweet, and it was a nice little complement to my scoop :D The hubs had the Cookies n' Cream, and this tasted fresh. We also tried the breakfast bar (recipe of Mr. Keith's; a granola bar with nuts and berries); an Old-Fashioned Soft Molasses (I liked this as it was nice and soft with a hint of spice); a Fro-Ro (their signature cookie that some toasted coconut and made with oats; also tasty); a sugar cookie with toasted coconut; a cinnamon bun (only offered Fri/Sat/Sun; with a luscious amount of frosting; this was not overly decadent, and I really liked the frosting); a Pecan Sticky Bun (only offered Fri/Sat/Sun; large whole pecans with a nice cinnamon/brown sugar glaze); and, a mini cherry pie (one of the best cherry pies we've had, the whole cherries within had a slight tart but still sweet, and the crust was delicious). They also have coffee and tea, and carry local/Amish goods, such as preserves and jams. They have a store anniversary part on 7/11, so keep that in mind! So something about driving home from Shenandoah put my wife in the mood for pie. Located on the picturesque Main Street of Front Royal, the Down Home Comfort Bakery delivered. As soon as we stepped in, the owner popped up and explained that it was run as an Amish bakery, and his wife made everything by hand. There were several cakes and pies available as well as other treats, but we selected one of the personal-sized apple pies from the display case. We also picked up a bottle of honey since they carried that as well. We could have stayed there to eat at one of the small tables, but we opted to walk down the block to eat our pie in the little park.
