Not one of my better experiences in Historic Lexington. I thought the service was slow. The beer selection was limited. The food was mostly bar food. If that is what you want...great..go for it. No other wait staff was in pajamas, so it wasn't part of a "theme night" Party of over 10 - they couldn't put tables together because it's a "fire hazard" Arrived at 6:30 and was told that the restaurant closed at 8p.m. (not 11 p.m. as posted) so we needed or order food by 7:30. We were planning on enjoying a drink first then ordering dinner, and more drinks, but after this announcement we finished our drinks, paid and left. Macado's brings back good fun college memories, although it's been years since.... Everytime I come down to visit, normally on a Friday evening, we invite friends to go get messed up at Macado's and that's exactly what tends to happen (at least on my end). Because do you know how easy it is to take down their shooters and amazing drinks? I'm a sugary drink fan and Macado's is my weakness. Plus those handsome VMI students that frequent this establishment... an added bonus. BUT I DIGRESS. Food-wise, I've heard about their legendary sandwiches but given the circumstances, we still to bar menu- tator tots, chicken wings, fried shrimp, nachos, etc as we knock down shots. Seriously, it's always fun times at Macado's. I'm in Lexington now for an extended period of time and it makes me sad I have to break with tradition. But there's always next time. Worst service ever and we didn't even order food. We were waiting for a table and my wife and I decided to grab a beer from the bar. We waited and waited to be be served as others were served around us. The bartend walked by us several times and even made some eye contact. When we finally got her attention we were told very short and slightly rudely that we needed to be sitting at a table in order to get a drink. Clearly the others at the bar were not sitting at a table but we're getting served. Decided that this place just was not for us as we watched other staff interactions and it was clear they didn't really want to serve as one made the comment that if he banged the trays again he would hope people would leave. read more

So many sandwiches! From Yelp we saw the portions are large so we asked our waitress. She said honestly, yes. So, we ordered Custers last stand which is a delicious chicken salad on croissant. We chose chips for the side & while we split this order, she brought an additional bag of chips w/no charge. This poor girl was one of 2 people waiting on tables and she was wearing a post-op boot!! Let me start by saying my wife and I walked in and the person who greeted us had the personality of a dead fish. We asked to be seated in the bar area so we could look out the windows, and see some of the unique decor. After we were seated we went through the menu figured out what we wanted, and then began to wait, and wait we did 10 to 15 minutes with no sign of the staff acknowledging our existence at the table even as they walked by us, and I know I at least made eye contact with one of them. At that point I said to my wife I'm done let's go somewhere else. Got up and started to walk out and got greeted by the dead fish and said thanks for no service. He just stared at us and shrugged his shoulders. I will never go there again and not recommend. read more

Absolutely worst service I have ever had in a restaurant. Our servers name was Amber M, she didn't check on us 1 single time during the hour and a half we were there. We were out of drinks, didn't get silverware, had to get our own napkins. Had to go get our own water refills from the bar.... From a pitcher that was sitting on the counter. Asked another server for silver ware after waiting for 10+ minutes for our server to come back. This one's name was Crystal she said " no just ask your server".This place is a joke. Also want to add the place was not busy at all. Our server had 3 tables. Order was also wrong on the table behind us and the table beside us was having to wave down our server. This was our first time at Macado's but it certainly won't be our last. Went for lunch on a Monday. Be advised that most of the restaurants in downtown Lexington are closed on Mondays. This worked in our favor because never would have made it here if others had been open. They have a huge menu of sandwiches, wraps, and clubs in addition to other items such as fish and chips. They all sound delicious so it made it difficult to decide. I ordered the Oriental Wrap with shrimp and absolutely loved it. Lots of flavor and light, just what was needed on a hot summer day. In town for an event at Washington and Lee, so we stopped for dinner. It was very busy and loud so the bartender and servers were very busy. However, the service was overall good, the beer was cold, and the food tasty. Let me start with the positive. The sandwiches we selected for the lunch specials were tasty. The soup accompaniment was average for a French Soup, rich in broth and with ample well cooked onions. The general manager was attentive when needed to correct an error; problem is it should not have been needed. The wait staff was poor. One was brisk and prickly, lacking smiles and customer service. The younger guy that took our orders started out fine but became argumentative. Neither knew their own drink menu or how to prepare them. For example, I ordered a Gator Bite shooter advertised with a souvenir glass. What I received was a generic beer tumbler full of technicolor juices and a maybe one shot in the mix. I told the server that it wasn't right and pointed it out on the menu. He returned after talking to the day bar keep and said "well thats the way we make it" and walked off before I could tell him to take it back. I tried it.... disappointed in the watered down taste and obvious lack of understanding on what a shooter is. Later when I told him to take it off the bill he argued that I took a drink. I told him I didn't want to argue about it and hence, the GM had to get involved. The GM understood and courteously struck it from the bill, apologized, and offered to get a correct drink. I thanked him but given we were paying the bill, opted to skip the corrected drink. In fairness, we'll try again on our next visit to Lexington. For now though, 2.5 is the best I am willing to give. They need help and can't rely on the GM to carry the day for each customer - the staff with a tiny effort could greatly enhance the appeal of this quaint local spot. read more

So...stopped in on a Sunday night for a quick sandwich. Been here since 6:35 PM, and it's now 7:25. We ordered a PB& J, (he's 11... don't judge) a cheeseburger, and a roast beef sandwich. In my kitchen, we are talking about 10 minutes of prep. Now...when the very pleasant waitress told us when we got here there was no salad, we should have left, gone to Food Lion, and we would have been done eating. Instead...we just got told that our food would be 5-8 more minutes. In our weakened and famished state, we should probably leave, but we won't. The waitress really was nice. Macado's was recommended to us by the clerk at the visitor's center as a family friendly dining option within walking distance. We started to head there however were detoured by all the dining options, picking up menus along the way. When we got to Macado's we honestly were only going to look at the menu and move on. First impression of the exterior didn't scream family friendly. However two customers exiting who saw us looking over the menu outside encouraged us to give them a try. They said they dined there three times in a two day time period and couldn't get enough. We decided that was good enough for us. Inside we were immediately greeted by a massive bar area. Since we had a toddler with us and the weather outside was lovely we chose to eat outside. The upstairs deck was full so we were seated on the front porch. With that being said if they are going to seat people out there they should make at least some effort to make it more inviting. Our table was dusty from pollen and street dust and there was nothing to prevent the napkins and paper children's menu from blowing away. In fact although it was nice there was a steady breeze and throughout our meal keeping things from blowing away was problematic. The chairs weren't quite right for a dining experience either. Service was attentive, especially considering we were at one of the the two front porch tables. She did check on us often. The menu had a variety of sandwiches, wraps and a few entrees and was rather lengthy. All of the sandwiches sounded so good that it was a hard decision. I finally settled on a sandwich called the Bourlesque, requesting it toasted. It came with a side;I choose a house made macaroni salad. We also ordered a mac and cheese kids meal with fruit and a chicken and broccoli mac and cheese entree with salad for hubby. Food came out surprisingly quickly as there was a steady stream of patrons coming and going. We really never got to see beyond the bar so I have no idea how many dining rooms they had but do know they have a second floor also. I was very happy with my meal although I did have to send it back for the toasting as requested. It was piled high with meat and had the perfect amount of crunch from the slaw. The Macado sauce was subtle and not overpowering. I wanted to save half for another meal but honestly it was so good I couldn't stop stuffing my face. The macaroni salad was delicious as well. If you like deviled eggs this is a must order! Hubby was very happy with his meal. Also impressive is that his salad was a spring mix and not a cheap iceburg lettuce variety. The kids meal was also home made and instead of a canned fruit salad they served fresh chunks of fruit which I very much appreciated. Throughout our meal however a drunk patron kept going around and pestering the customers, us included. He reeked of alcohol. At one point during our meal a couple from inside the bar escaped and hovered over our table to get away from him. We welcomed them to join us and they told us how he was going around bugging everyone inside as well. It was only 6 pm on a Friday night and his behavior and obvious drunken state should have been addressed by the staff but it wasn't. He was well past the stage of being "flagged" yet continued to walk around with shots of liquor. That spoke volumes and adds credit ability to my impression that this isn't the exactly a family friendly establishment. This would have easily been a 5 star review for us had it not been for the following factors; an uninviting outdoor dining space, lack of napkin holder or way to keep things from blowing away, uncomfortable dining chairs that weren't the right height for dining, the unaddressed drunken patron, and the dirty bathroom. Fix those things and keep your current menu and this place will really shine! We had no faults with the food or service thus prompting such a high star review. read more

Called two weeks in advance to make a reservation for 20 on a Sunday at 6:30. Arrived said Sunday which was a tradition for this group of young men who were biking across the country and on the home stretch. When greeted by the host she indicated that they close at 7. I asked to speak to a manager who again told me the same information. I told them I called in advance and they didn't mention that so I guess that Sunday they would be a little late to close. Did no one write down the reservation? I know I left my name AND number. We were seated upstairs with an amazing waitress who did the absolute best she could given ZERO help from her manager or anyone else. The only time someone came to help this young lady was to grab a couple plates and to see if we were done yet. This location doesn't know what it's doing and it can't keep servers, kitchen, or help because of it. If you go here lower your standards and it might not be a terrible experience. Some days the food is delish but some days you can tell no one held anyone accountable before the food it exited the kitchen to the table. Beautiful location with terrible management. read more

Not sure why this place doesn't have more stars, my fiancé and I loved our experience here! The server was incredibly kind and friendly and went above and beyond. In the age of covid, we appreciated that every member of the staff had masks. The menus were virtual, and we just scanned the barcode when we sat down at the table. The menu selection was very extensive! We started with the soft pretzels with beer cheese and they were so delicious we felt like we had gotten them from auntie Anne's pretzels or a fair! My fiancé got the wings, which were breaded and cooked to perfection. I got the potato skins which came with a a delicious French onion dip. There was a huge range of drinks and shooters to choose from, and we each tried 3. All of the drinks were so beautifully crafted and delicious! We stopped by on a road trip, but next time we pass through Lexington we will be SURE to visit Macado's! read more

Our table today come up with a collective 3.2 rating. After our experience and then reading reviews just now, it's pretty clear there are some pros and cons with Macado's. Our food was actually really good, salads, soft pretzels, hot dogs and burgers. Well prepared, large portions and served in a timely fashion. Our waitress was great too, attentive, humorous and kind. Wish I could remember her name. Also, pretty reasonable prices. On the flip side, some of the staff's attire looked like they walked in off the street. One employee had on a tshirt that was filthy from her chest to her waist AND she was bringing food and drinks to tables. She really ought to be wearing an apron that can be wiped clean, so as to not gross out customers. The stairs up to the restrooms could fill a vacuum bag, oh and the cobweb on the pepper shaker added a nice flare. LOL. Definitely some improvements need to be made in the cleanliness and presentation department. read more

This is my favorite sandwich place in Lexington. The vibe is very relaxed. Usually you can get a table pretty easily, but if you go on a weekend, there may be a short wait. If you go during the school year, you may see groups of VMI cadets eating there. There are specials that happen every day. Take advantage of the wings special. As for sandwiches, the Mcduffy is my fave. All of sandwiches are pretty decently sized and definitely filling. There are many different sandwiches to choose from, the drinks are good, there's a lot of seating, and it's conveniently located downtown. Love it! read more

This is a pretty popular spot for the college kids on the weekends. We went for lunch on a Monday. Two women were behind the front desk upon entry at approximately 11:30 am. We received the standard greeting of "we'll be right with you." 10 minutes later we were seated. One table of patrons was outside, two tables on the first floor and one table of seated patrons upstairs where we were placed. The waitress was awesome. Came right over and took our food and drink orders (water). We waited 50 minutes for one sandwich and one salad. The order was not at all complicated for such an an egregious wait. read more

Where WAS this when I was in college? Not to hate on the Palms, which I have fond memories of. I like how they've kept the integrity of the old Wilson Walker House. The front porches are awesome at night. They have a fairly ridiculous menu of sandwiches. All are pretty basic, but the variety is great. Appetizers are filling. Everything is very inexpensive. The beer list is pretty uninspiring, but they cater to the crowd. I've had great service (including after graduation) and absolutely terrible service. It all depends on the server. read more
