For years, I was all about Lululemon's special "luon" moisture-wicking, butt-tightening super fabric. Seriously, their clothes are C-U-T-E. But I'm kind of down on Lulu for switching production to China a few years ago (I understand after they grew, keeping it all in Vancouver would be $$$...but seriously, child labor & sweat shops? Not cool. Plus, I think charging $98 for a pair of yoga pants keeps you making enough profit even with domestic production. In the end, it's about making more money with cheaper labor... It sickens me.). Not to mention, the founder Chip seems to be a real stand-up guy - note the extreme, dripping sarcasm in my statement.
While I justify spending serious dough on serious quality and style, I think Lulu's products have decreased in quality over the years yet stayed in price - or INCREASED even.
Not to mention, this Carlsbad location is way weird. I have been to some outstanding Lululemon locations (SF really stands out to me), but this one borders on creepy and annoying. You get asked if you need help every 1.3 seconds. It's great the attention they give, but all the employees there have such fake smiles and annoying persistence that it makes it an unpleasant experience to shop there. In fact, since it's opened over a year ago, I have only brought myself in 3 times despite their awesome array of free fitness classes. And EVERY time, I wonder why I came in because I leave feeling bombarded and attacked.
Not to mention, I get annoyed by the fact they always try to fit you into some category. Are you a runner? A yogi? A cyclist? What if I just like to work out, and am just looking for some freaking clothes! I don't need the girl at the counter to comment when I'm looking through the "running section" rack for running tights, then have another girl on the floor comment on my selection of running tights, then have the girl at the fitting rooms exclaim, "we have a runner!" when she's opening my dressing room. I get it. It's annoying, guys.
I mean, I get why they must train their employees this way - to create a more personable and interactive experience with the customers. To relate to and engage with the customer. But seriously, it's so rehearsed and fake, we can all see through it! They need to not give them a script, because it's really transparent when 3 employees in a row say the same phrases over and over. Instead of making me feel welcomed, I feel like I've entered some Lulu twilight zone with wide-eyed, smiling, vacant drones. And it also makes me feel like they don't give two cents about me as a real person, only as someone who might drop a few hundo's for a new yoga outfit.
You're seriously best going somewhere else for yoga clothes. Prana warehouse sale. Maybe even the Lululemon locations in downtown SD or La Jolla, if you really need some Lulu pants. Or go organic with natural fibers! read more
