I received a few discount coupons via email so I decided to stop in to take a look. I have a few Madewell items that are staples in my wardrobe and I really like the quality of those items. They had a lot of items I liked. The staff was present in the store, but I had to ask for help. The girl I asked took the time to look up an item I was interested in, but it was mostly sold out in store and online. She said that they could order it but there was a chance they would not get it due to the fact that the online quantity was so limited. I appreciated her candor and did not order the item. I tried on a few items and decided on my purchase. I had heard the previous cashier tell someone that they did not have much change in the register so if the person was paying cash they couldn't take any large bills. When it came time to pay I decided to pay cash, but apparently they had to use a different register for that. I had exact change, so she moved over to the next register. It took her awhile to figure it out and she had to call for help. Eventually, she figured it out but I felt bad for the person waiting behind me. I will definitely be back. They had some really nice items and are not far from me. read more

I don't usually try on clothes at this Madewell but there was a sale going on and I found some great deals. I usually opt for jewelry, bags and accessories but the sales ladies were encouraging and inspired me to try on some items outside of my comfort zone. The quality of their denim is unbeatable. The staff were attentive and helpful, and Stacey at the register was SO wonderful. I forgot they had my birthday on file so I got an extra discount on top of the sale items and she absolutely made my day. Her energy was so contagious that my friend and I walked out of the store literally beaming. Thanks Stacey!!! read more

Emily was super helpful from the start. I'm really grateful to her for helping me find a great pair of jeans and sharing that they had a 40% off sale that ended at noon but they were honoring it all day. Then it went downhill. I waited in a line for 10-15 minutes even though the line had manufactured in a different area than they preferred. Nobody was in the correct line and I didn't want to cut the many people in front of me so I stayed in the wrong line. Then another helper came and asked everyone behind me to move to where the line was supposed to be. When it was my turn to be next and I proceeded towards the cashier with the long, dark and wavy hair she looked up and firmly told me I was not in the correct line meaning I now had to go back to the end of the new line which was now exceptionally longer. Even after one of the ladies in line kindly offered for me to go in front of her because she knew I had been waiting longer than she had the cashier with no effort to do the right thing proceeded to take customers in front of me. I initially put the pants down and walked out because of my frustration but I was leaving soon for a trip and wanted to take them with so walked back in and proceeded to wait in line again. Of course the girl rang me up without the discount and I had to remind her. She said oh well the sale ended at noon but we are honoring it still. Ok, well if you are honoring it then why didn't you ring it up that way? In any case, I feel like I should give a higher rating because of Emily but I won't step foot in this establishment again after this experience. read more

The associates here have been great -- friendly and helpful. However, the lady with the long, dark hair with glasses (she was condescending to the associates so I assume she's the manager based on the way she was acting) is HORRIBLE. She was unfortunately working the register both times I went and she was so curt and dismissive, I left the store with a bad taste solely because of her. read more

Nice and clean store .. BUT the service .. omg .. it was disappointing. Not one single person on the floor asked me if I needed assistance. This was so odd. Fashion Valley Mall's Madewell is the exact opposite and has great customer service. I don't know if it was an off day or the team just needs to up their customer service. There were two representatives on the floor near the Jean area just chatting away acting as is they were at brunch rather than work. To make matters worse. The line took forever. The customers in line with me were just looking at each other. We were all thinking the same thing.. the two cashiers were just as slow as molasses. I get it, you have to wait in line sometimes. But, customer service 101, acknowledge the 8 people in line at least once.. not a peep from them .. I was in line for 20 minutes. When I finally was able to pay. I will say the cashier seemed friendly and surprisingly I was out of there quick. I didn't take pics, which is ironic since I was bored, waiting in line forever. read more

I'm a Madewell Insider, have shopped at Madewell for years, purchased several items, shop here regularly and return items as needed. Today I had a return of 2 items I had purchased a week ago. One of the items did not have tags on it, as I thought I was going to keep it and had removed the tags. The item was unworn and had not been washed. Today I was informed that they don't accept returns without tags, but they accepted the return "this one time". Over the years, I have returned several items, some of them no tags and no one has ever informed me of this policy until today. It was unfortunate how the sales person and manager treated me. They were both quite cold, glaring and unpleasant. So much so that I really don't want to step foot back in the store. It could have been treated so differently by sharing with me instead of acting as if I'd been wearing the clothes and returning them. Madewell: teach your employees to have Nordstrom customer service and if a person is going to be treated like this because there's not tags on a return item. The policy needs to be in large lettering in the store. Honestly, your competitors are more classy. read more

I felt like I was a burden, and I was already heading into Madewell nervous and anxious about trying on jeans which is maybe once a year because it's always been a horrible experience. I was recommended to your store for great quality jeans by a friend who went with me to support me. The associated Mary made feel like incompetent for not knowing the differences in the jean types instead of educating me and taking the opportunity to truly help me find the best pair for my body type. I also felt she was sharp in her tone and annoyed, which is unfortunate. I hope Madewell as a company invest in your Jean associates to seize the opportunity to uplift women with a mission statement that speaks to doing better for people. I felt like the dressing room associated was focusing on making a commission on jeans sold versus providing knowledge and assistance to a new costumer. read more

I was ignored the entire time I was in the store!!! When I finally hear one of the employees say, "Hi! How are you doing?" It wasn't to me, of course, it was to a "different" lady. These employees must be racist and prejudice. I spent more than 10 min browsing the store and passed them many times. They did not even acknowledge me. It was so uncomfortable. I didn't want to spend my money there so I went to the one in Mission Viejo. The employees were much nicer there. I have also shopped at UTC and never experienced this. I absolutely love Madewell. It is very unfortunate that this store location is a bad representation of the brand. I placed an order in store and the associate did not verify my address and sent it to the wrong address. I had just completed a return with her where she could clearly see my correct address so I trusted that she would send it to the right place. The day I was suppose to receive the package I realized it was being sent to an address I no longer live at and have no way of getting the package back. I called the store to have the mistake corrected and spoke to an employee that was extremely rude to me and made me feel like it was my mistake to correct. I called customer service and they fixed the problem (thankfully). The next day I received a call from the store director who started off the call by telling me they pulled up camera footage of me the day I placed the order in store and even though there is no audio on the recording that it seems that her employee verified the address. I'm shocked that a Madewell would operate this way and as a loyal customer I would be treated like I was a liar. I would avoid this location if you can. read more

Great store with quality clothing items. I purchased a couple of shirts, a pair or pants, and cute low boots. I'm really happy with their styles, especially the pants. The fabric is durable, forgiving, and keeps my pants feeling tight in the right places. I was in the area with my sister to try on dresses at BHLDN in Anthropologie across the street. We hopped on over to Madewell to try on jeans after finding her wedding dress (major life moment!!) and were not greeted t by store associates upon arrival. Ok, so we disregard that and enjoy our time perusing the store. When we finally want to try on clothes, the sale associate was kind and helped us and even recommended that we order online in size tall. I went to checkout to buy them online to be delivered to me, and then they were sold out of my size. It would have been best practice in my opinion to have had the associate who was helping us check if they could order the jeans I wanted online before recommending it to me. It felt like a rollercoaster of emotions to just get some jeans. However, I finally got my size in tall ordered online, through months (seriously five months) of checking Madewell online. I had them delivered here, and went to pick up my jeans in store and yet again no one greeted me, there was no one at the front register or desk, and there were shoe boxes strewn about on the floor. The same super kind sales associate (maybe Joan?) was there and I got to tell her I finally got my jeans after five months which was fun, but overall the experience was only successful based upon my own efforts to get these jeans. I went in on the hunt for either a great pair of joggers or jeans but I had to return a Christmas gift first. I wasn't greeted upon entry and there was no conversation on the cashier's end during the return and no offer to help while I browsed from either the cashier who was arranging jewelry or another associate working in the back of the store. I have only experienced this type of customer service once or twice in my life but it's enough to put me off a brand entirely. I thought it was prejudice till I noted the other reviews. I am surprised their boss doesnt say something. I was shocked. I did retail and always made sure to make eye contact, and say hi and offer help. I asked for help and finally got some. It got a 2 as they have great dresses ($118-138) omg right? but they are always full price and I can't wait for sales as my size (M, L or XL)is gone by that time. They also need to get more stock of their popular shoes. they had a camel leather sandal/maryjane which was $138 and I would have bought as it was well made but sold out. The sales person noted they don't make much. Madewell don't frustrate your fans/sales target customers. We want to be satisfied. Take note. The online customer service is excellent. This store is immaculately organized. The staff are so helpful, and their suggestions were great. They helped me for over an hour while I tried on tons of jeans, tops and shoes. When they didn't have my size, they were able to ship the perfect the top i wanted to my house. The clothes are classic and simple with trendy tailoring: cotton everything, a myriad of tees, stripes, skinny jeans, leather, and simple edgy jewelry. I purchased something at the location in Los Angeles for a trip. But unfortunately it didn't fit me and as I returned from my trip I realized I was one day outside the return exchange period. I went to the store in Carlsbad since I live there and Robbia immediately took care of me. I appreciate that they made an exception and stand behind their brand. I am sorry to hear the poor reviews. I have had the opposite experience. Two of my favorite, well-worn black everyday shoes are Madewell as well of my two favorite jeans. Well not long ago the blue jeans ripped in a strange spot- not on a seam and near the upper region. Anyway, the manager was kind enough to offer me options rather than make me feel terrible about bringing in jeans that are clearly a year plus old. Great customer service! People saying "hi" when I walk in is banal (as repeatedly stated by other reviewers); what I need is someone to respond with solutions when I have a problem with the product. That they did. I stopped in for my first time today, and based on the other stores in the forum, I expected to be ignored and shell out a ton of cash. I was so pleasantly surprised. I was helped immediately by Claire and Lauren. And not in a pushy, salesy way. These ladies were genuinely kind. Normally I'm not one to seek or take the advice of a sales person because I'm picky, but damn they knew what they were doing. Lauren took the initiative and stocked my fitting room with a random pair of high rise skinnies and I didn't even try on the ones I selected. In the end, I spent close to $200, which is really nothing at Madewell but I do not feel bad about it in the slightest. I'm looking forward to many more great experiences. read more

She even went on to assume that I was stealing, even though I only came in to make a simple return. The only reason I am giving two stars instead of one is because only one other associate greeted me when I walked in, but even then she was still constantly checking on me and assuming I was going to shoplift.
