Okay, you know those gift shops that seem like they're going to be so fun and look so cute, but once you go in there's nothing that you truly want that badly? This is not one of those gift shops. I had to stop myself before I bought the whole store. The curation of handmade pottery, clothing, decor and other gifts was so beautiful and unique -- I haven't seen any other stores with the items they carry. I ended up buying gifts for people 2-3 months in advance of their birthdays because I couldn't resist!! Seems like I was not the clientele they were interested in, as I was ignored the entire time I browse the shop. Other customers came in and were greeted, welcomed even offered drinks. My recommendation is to not shop here based on a really upsetting experience I had. I'm going to include a lot of detail, just to be sure I cover anything the owner may bring up in response. I went into this store and noticed a bag with the state of Israel on it, colored in as a watermelon, a symbol commonly associated with the call for a one-state solution where Israel no longer exists. As a loyal Jewish customer who genuinely liked the store, I thought it was worth respectfully sharing that the imagery offended me. I spoke kindly to the manager and asked to write a note to the owner. The manager acknowledged my approach and thanked me for being calm and respectful, she mentioned someone else had yelled at her about this same thing. The owner, rather than engaging in a civil dialogue or even simply ignoring my note, which honestly is what I expected, decided to text the manager that she would "wipe her ass" with my note (before even reading it) and then made the strange choice to take a screenshot of their text exchange and post it to the store's Instagram account. I was shocked.  A few others have left reviews about this situation, and the owner has been deflecting, trying to paint me as the bad person instead of addressing her own behavior. She literally chose to publicly share a staff exchange where she said she would "wipe her ass" with a thoughtful note a patron left her. Someone who included the words "coexist" in the note. I 100% respect that everyone is entitled to their own beliefs, but her actions reflect blatant intolerance, and her behavior was unhinged and unnecessarily cruel. It's exactly the kind of behavior that makes people like me feel the need to post under an alias, out of concern for unnecessary hostile responses. Following this incident, a friend of mine attempted to speak with her over instragam, and the owner called us "genocidal fucks" (mainly referring to me, someone she had never met) and again made the strange decision to post that exchange to the stores Instagram account. In addition, she told another person "best of luck to you in the second round of The Hague Trials".  I simply do not agree with this behavior. In addition, the owner has lost the plot. You can't say you advocate for peace and behave this.   2 things brought up in previous responses by the owner I want to address... In a response below to a review here on yelp, to someone else about these events, Heidi claimed, "She called the store later to berate the staff." She also wrote, "Why couldn't this woman just choose not to engage?" Let me clarify, because she's clearly confused. I called the manager and simply said: "I saw the exchange the owner posted to Instagram. I noticed you reacted with a 'haha,' and I wanted you to know that I was hurt." I believe in dialogue, particularly when it's not aggressive. Also, I may be mistaken, but I thought I'd had a positive interaction with the manager. That was it. I didn't berate anyone. Did it make her uncomfortable? Probably, but that's not the same thing. As for "not engaging"? Funny the owner should say that given she chose to publicly post that she was going to "wipe her ass" with my letter? She has also told people that I said there are "bigger genocides." To clarify: in a flustered and emotional moment while speaking to the manager, I misspoke and said something along those lines. That was not my intention, and I do not believe there is a genocide Gaza. That is my personal opinion and no one has to agree with me. What I meant to convey is that there are many other conflicts around the world where large numbers of people are dying, yet I did not see the store carrying items making political statements about those issues. My point was about the inconsistency, not to minimize anyone's suffering. I am not denying I fumbled my words, I was emotional and anxious, but that doesn't change that the owner, again, is trying to deflect attention away from her own hateful behavior. Choose respect, kindness, and dialogue--or simply don't engage. Unfortunately, that's not how ThreadSpun has chosen to treat shoppers. read more

Instead of responding professionally, or just not engage, she posted a surveillance photo of the customer with crude and mocking comments on social media. I consider this bullying, and can put someone's safety at risk. I hope Encinitas stays a place of inclusiveness. Businesses like this have no place here. read more

The person that "helped" me was so no interested in answering my questions and just doing the bare minimum. I was looking for a place nearby to buy a greeting card, & Yelp had a review for Thread Spun, so I went there. What an adorable little store! You wouldn't think it from the low-key exterior. One side had cards, jewelry, & "kid stuff". I bought tees for 2 of my grands that had a face made out of the word Leucadia, which the owner had designed. I didn't have time to explore the other side, which looked to be adult clothing, but I will be back. Shop local, & support a great business! read more

Thread Spun is one of my favorite shops in Encinitas for cute gifts and other home goods. This is always our first stop when we need a gift for a friend, new mom, or really anyone! They also have cute artwork and greeting cards, among tons of other items like jewelry, clothing, and pillows. The kids' section is always well stocked with adorable clothing and other toys! Stopped in here the other day when I had a few minutes between appointments. Love this cute store. I bought a hand painted map called, "Keep it Funky. Leucadia." Had to have it as I went to kindergarten in Leucadia at Paul Ecke Central School in the mid 60's. I emailed the owner of Thread Spun to ask who had painted the map as I wanted to thank the artist and tell her my story. She got right back to me. Now that is customer service! First off, this place is so cute. Aesthetically pleasing and the clothes were so cute. However, the staff blew my mind at there behavior. Walking in, they looked at me and my friend and never even said a simple hi. As we were shopping, they proceeded to talk about there current sales and disclosed information about the stores income which I thought was a little unprofessional. Not only that, but they were drinking alcohol out of the can so the customers could clearly see they were drinking on the job. I have bought several items online through the store website which has always been a positive experience; delivered quickly and wrapped sustainably- can't ask for more! But I just visited the store in person for the first time last week and... I'm in love! It's probably best I don't live in the area because I would go there ALL THE TIME. It is such a soothing and creative space, is perfect for gift ideas, self-care, home goods... the items are so wonderfully curated that everything you touch is soul-quenching. Not to mention it's ethically sourced and helps support both refugees from afar and the local community. You're bound to leave feeling good. The staff is friendly, helpful, and following strict covid policies, which I very much appreciate! I couldn't find the right size in a matching top/pant set, but the staff kindly checked their back of store inventory and then ended up ordering it for me and couldn't have been nicer in helping me find what I was looking for. The first time I went to the store I met the shop owner, Heidi. She was such a joy. She helped me find the right sized sun hat. I went back in a second time to pick up my hat that she special ordered for me and one of her employees was working. Again, such a positive experience and ended up buying some jewelry.
