I have to say Los nísperos isn't what I expected. There are truly some hidden gems here. This place has both indoor and outdoor seating we sat inside. It's small not a very big seating area but I'm sure if you're with a group they can connect some tables. The food was freshly made and delicious large enough portions to share. Los Nisperos is truly a hidden gem in the heart of the South Bronx! Me and my boyfriend Carlos headed out to this culinary destination, after my immunotherapy infusion session ended after 4:30 pm. I've been already craving Peruvian food for several days, especially for ceviche and yuca frita. As the early evening progressed and it got increasingly colder, I was still hesitant to go that far... It was cold and I was leaning towards a soup. Anyway, long story short, we headed out to Los Nisperos. As soon as we arrived, people were standing before the food counter, waiting for takeout. As soon as we took our coats off, and we sat, we were greeted by a polite waitress. Although the restaurant is small, it was nicely decorated with pictures frames up on their walls, which gave it a much more cozy, homey feel. We had a can of ginger ale each. There was a small plate of Peruvian toasted corn kernels. I had the tiradito, which is a Peruvian-style chicken rice soup. It was a very delicious dish; arrived piping hot at the table, with a lime wedge. Carlos had 1/4 rotisserie chicken, rice, beans. We shared the shrimp ceviche, with a side order of yuca frita and also an order of fried squid. This establishment is very down to basics; it's a hole-in-the-wall joint that truly delivers a flavorful punch. The rotisserie chicken was delicious, very juicy. We also enjoyed the fried calamari. It came with a dipping sauce. I believe, by the taste, that it was ginger-based, with a slight touch of honey. I must say, that the highlight of our dinner, was the shrimp ceviche. They were plump, perfectly marinated in its citrus juice. It also came in a crispy bed of lettuce, and the classic, red pickled onions. The best part of this dish, was the citrus marinade or as they call it, leche de tigre, tiger's milk...I really wished I had a spoon to drink all that flavorful leche de tigre! It was so good!!! Carlos looked at me like, "wow, you really are hungry, don't you?" I wiped clean every single plate. I almost cried when the waitress took the plate with the tiger's milk! The calamari platter also came with a bed of crispy lettuce. Next time, there will be room for desert! Overall, we were very satisfied. Excellent food, simple decor, and great service. I would never thought of such a great place to eat, in the South Bronx! The staff are very polite. The Spanish music is great, not loud at all. Their customer's restroom is CLEAN AND SPOTLESS. It's a definite plus. I would definitely recommend this restaurant. I've been contemplating at the thought of returning soon. It also will be great to keep exploring this side of town, especially as the weather gets warmer. The portions are great. Not too big, not too small. They are perfect. Food was ok. Service horrible. But get this. They add a service charge once according to staff it goes over certain amount of money. Totally unacceptable. I've never heard of this. It was only my daughter and I. And they added more than 15% of a service charge. Definitely won't go back. First visit: Based on the slick web site, I was expecting the restaurant to have some decorating flare, the outside looked messy and in need of a paint. Didn't really have the time to go anywhere else--and the reviews were positive, So I thought what the... Well, the inside wasn't particularly nice either and there was loud American AM radio music playing. No one sitting, either (though people came and went for take out). But it was clean and the sweet server turned down the volume to almost nothing for me. I look at the menu and it's mostly seafood and steak. Nothing really grabs me except the tamales--which they didn't have. On the awning it says they specialize in seafood so I decide to try the $16 seafood with yellow rice, this despite the fact that I've had many prior experiences of rubbery, dry, reheated seafood in other places. I order and a small bowl of tasty crisp toasted large corn kernels and a little plastic dish of supremely flavorsome, rich, slightly spicy, green sauce were placed in front of me. The two of them worked really, really, well together too. Then, surprisingly (disturbingly?) quickly, comes this large, elegant, bowl of rice with a kind of dark brown color. I can see little bits of egg inside. I take one taste and it's tasty but it's been made with soy sauce which I'm not in the mood for and eggs don't agree with me. I infer--correctly--that this is the fried rice not the yellow rice. The server is apologetic and an equally large bowl of yellow rice with seafood and some onion salad appears shortly The seafood is not only tender and moist, but abundant: 5 good sized shrimp, two large mussels, lots of squid rings and tentacles, and--lo and behold--1/2 of a small crab! And with some lime and salt to perk it up, the flavor of the rice was pretty wonderful too. 5 stars. Visit 2: Inspired by my first experience, I resolved to travel to try their barbecue chicken--a Peruvian specialty. It was Sunday at 6pm and now the previously deserted place was hopping and animated by Latin music. And there were paintings on the walls too--were they there the first time? Turned out they'd run out of dark meat, but the breast was moist and the spicing good. Red beans were just ok but the white rice tasty. Nice that they gave me the lunch special price of $7+. My wife and I live nearby and came down for a wonderful New Year's Day lunch and definitely plan to come back. We shared the Ceviche Mixto, 1/2 rotisserie chicken and a pitcher of Chicha de Maiz Morado, a sweet punch made from purple corn, cinnamon, sugar etc...very tasty and refreshing. The food was fantastic. The chicken, as we hoped, had crispy skin, but very tender meat. Also had a very ample serving of white rice that, simple as that is, caught our attention...not sure if they cook it in chicken stock or what, but it packed in a subtle but welcome taste above plain rice. The Ceviche portion was generous, with a healthy variety of fish and veggies and milky sauce. My wife could not get enough of the spicy-ish green garlic sauce served at all tables, as well. I'm moving to this neighborhood in a few weeks and my friend suggested we have lunch at La Granja Peruvian Restaurant. I can see how this restaurant might be a big problem for me and a bigger problem for my pants. As others have stated, this place has the feel of a cheaper Pio Pio. That is both excellent and true news! My only gripes before we get to the good parts: beans were a little bland, whereas everything else was extremely flavorful; and when dining in, they don't offer you water...We'll work on that in my future visits. This is a super casual spot, with an open kitchen behind the counter and everything is fresh and made-to-order, so don't expect to get your food in 10-15 minutes if you have multiple dishes. Note: They have a baked chicken lunch special that comes with rice and beans, offered Monday through Friday. Shrimp in garlic sauce, delicious and served with fried yucca. I ordered rice and beans and an order of maduros (sweet plaintains), plus their yummy garlic sauce. Their famed sauce has a lot more heat than the one at other Peruvian places, which I appreciate, BUT also is not nearly as garlicky, and I think that's probably more important. Everything we tried here was amazing--see photos-- and it was a challenge, but we managed to eat everything we ordered. I LOVE PERUVIAN FOOD. I have no and it in several years and I was pleased to see they had my favorite dish. I love seco verde de carne. Its a Peruvian dish that is very popular and extremely delicious. The food was so full of flavor, everything was so fresh. Also, it was so cheap! I had to have spent less than 15 for a full entree, rice beans and meat, a side dish, a morirsoñando [popular hispanic drink]. I WILL ABSOLUTELY COME AGAIN! Do not be fooled by the small location and bare minimum decorations. It is a lot better than how it looks. Service is not really good but for the food and price I could care less. read more

The one thing I enjoy as a chef is Peruvian chicken I found this really awesome small neighborhood Peruvian restaurant where the chicken is simply off the chain. Seriously if your on 149. & 3Ave shopping instead of fast food come to Los Nisperos . The chicken is delicious, fresh , so moist, and the chicken fried rice is amazing. The service was good, considering the waitress had about 5 tables. The bill was a bit steep tho 4th time here, will be my last...ordered pick up, from experience their delivery is I purchased 2 chaufa's and was given 3 sauces. Additional sauces are 3/$1.... This plate of fried rice is huge. The sauces are less than half full. I'd say it's a scam to have customers purchase extra sauce because you would have to buy 6 extra sauces in order to be satisfied with your meal. read more

Hands down the best peruvian restaurant I have been to. This beats Pio Pio in Manhattan and random establishments I tested out in Miami.. because you get quality AND quantity. Holy moly! Food: - arroz con marisco - my eyes bulged, my jaw dropped, my mouth watered. This plate was ridiculous. It can seriously feed 5 people. The seafood was huge, the rice was cooked tender and made perfectly flavorful without being too salty or dry. I was in love. I have leftovers for at least 5 more meals.. for $15!! - avocado salad - pretty standard in terms of taste but so big i felt proud of myself for reaching my vegetable intake of the day. - plaintains - the side of plaintains is basically an entree worth of food. my friend and I barely made a dent. - beans - yummy but nothing too special. it was overshadowed by the arroz con marisco. i probably wouldn't order it again. Service: - our waitress was lovely! She provided us samples of their homemade beverage and was very delightful. Please give this place a try! It is worth the trek!! La granja is definitely a gem in the Bronx. At first glance the restaurant does not look fancy however the food makes up for the decor. My usual Lunch special with baked chicken (dark meat), yellow rice and fried plantains. Beware that the fried plantains are deep fried and not pan fried so they hold a lot more oil than usual however the food is still tasty! We got one of the combos with a whole chicken, rice and beans, and avocado salad. Everything was great. The chicken was the star of the show-- it was perfectly cooked, flavorful, and juicy. The green spicy sauce they give you takes it to the next level. We also had a drink made from purple corn called Chicha Morada. Latin American drinks are often way too sweet for me-- this one wasn't too sweet, and was refreshing and fruity with what tasted like clove and cinnamon. I loved it. Definitely recommend this spot.
