Very good Yoyo I brought that can feed two. It was sweet and savory and the fried cheese added just the right amount of salt flavor it needed to balance the flavors. This was a really good sandwich. I also picked me up some green sauce to go. Customer service was good, I was allow to sample a drink called Papelon and it quite refreshing. It had the taste of a lemonade and tea mixed together. The restaurant is big enough to dine inside or out with bathroom availability. I would definitely visit this place again for more dishes that I'm not familiar with. Ohhh, it's been way, way too long, Cachapas y Mas! At one point in life, the Pardner and I were regulars at this clean, bustling Venezuelan cafe on Dyckman. It was our go-to for arepas, patacones and, yes, the eponymous cachapas after jaunts in Inwood Hill Park with our pup. But it's been a few years... On a whim, we recently decided to drop by our old haunts and see how this lovely little establishment has aged. Conclusion: way better than we have. ;) If anything, it is even more delicious than it was before. For one thing, you now have to opt IN to that orange sauce that used to drown just about everything that came out of the kitchen unless you begged repeatedly for it to be omitted. That is a big fat win in my book. Cachapas are excellent as is, sans orange sauce. At one point they were overly sweet; the ones in our recent order were far more dialed back -- still a touch sweeter than we prefer (I just want to taste the natural sweetness of sweetcorn), but quite enjoyable. The arepas at CYM are heavenly. They are tender on the inside, crisp on the outside, generously stuffed. Proteins are moist, tender and flavorful; vegetarian options wide ranging and well made. All arepas come with a touch of green matter so you don't worry that you'll die of scurvy in the next 24 hours. The Pardner and Progeny 1, no lightweights, couldn't eat more than a single stuffed arepa. Empanadas are also unusually excellent in a neighborhood full of excellent empanadas. CYM's are made of 100% corn masa (e.g. wheat free) and well filled, a good stunt double for Colombian empanadas or any other masa-wrapped empanada, on the smaller side for structural stability. The deep fried crusts are beautifully golden and crisp, but well blotted and non-greasy. Chicha is thick enough to eat as a pudding with a spoon. Muy rico! This was my first visit, and I tried the chicken empanada and chinola (passion fruit juice), which totaled $10. Unfortunately, it wasn't worth it. The place is small but nicely decorated. However, I noticed one employee working very hard to prep and serve customers, while others were on their phones. As for the food, the chicken empanada was underwhelming; nothing special or particularly flavorful. The chinola tasted like what you'd find at most empanada or juice shops; nothing unique. I stopped by Cachapas y Mas on Dyckman with a friend Friday evening and I'm glad I did. We were headed to a cigar lounge and the maracucha burger was on my mind and is on their menu. It's exactly what the doctor orders BEFORE you go out for a night of drinking and cigars. The Maracucha is the unsung hero among the burgers in this competitive food genre of NYC. For fifteen bucks, you get a loaded burger of the non smashed variety that will satisfy the most demanding appetites: a thick beef patty with ham and bacon, American cheese, potato sticks, lettuce and tomato, with their sauce. Pardon me if I left anything off that list, which stacks the Maracucha at least six inches high before they wrap it up. However this past Friday, I would upgrade the Maracucha with the Venezuelan queso de mano for four bucks each burger, $19 total per Maracucha. Queso de mano, for the uninitiated, is a hand pulled cheese that is similar to mozzarella and this cheese is found in a lot of the offerings on the menu at Cachapas y Mas. Adding the queso de mano to the Maracucha puts this burger over the top for me. It adds a depth of flavor and richness to the burger that is as great on the palate as it is to see, increasing the stack height above seven inches unwrapped. This is for those with an appetite and about to go out on the town or to rescue you possibly from a hangover after going out on the town. This is for those who are tired of all the other hyped burgers, the smashed burgers that leave you wondering where is all the meat. This is for those looking for something different, immensely satisfying, and at a price point well under what is offered at those hyped places which can top out over thirty bucks. Came here before heading over to the Met Cloisters and it was so good. The woman at the register was nice and patient with my broken Spanish skills. The two of us ordered two arepas to share- the Reina pepillada (chicken salad with avocado) and the pabellon. The pabellon was my favorite. Savory from the beef, beans, and cheese, with a slight sweetness from the plantains. The Reina pepillada was also very good. POST COVID REVIEW TLDR: Venezuelan comfort food. The tequeños are to be ordered under any means necessary. Fast & to the point. Food/Drink - 4/5 - Have gotten the patacon with shredded chicken + avocado, the cachapa with shredded chicken + avocado and of course their tequeños (Venezuelan cheese sticks). All are great but my go to has become the patacon and the tequeños. This food is great for when you want to indulge in comfort food. So yummy. Also word of advice ALWAYS get the tequeños... 2 at the minimum. No question. Service - 4/5 - Fast and to the point. The type of spot where what's cooking gets most of the attention and when it comes to fast food, I honestly would not have it any other way. I've been wanting to try this place for the longest time and was finally able to. At first, we walked in to ask if they're allowing indoors dining and they said yes, you can choose between eating outside or indoors. However, after being in our table for about more than 5 minutes, we were told that we have to go to the cashier and order there. I asked for "queso de mano" or "queso guayanés" (these are the most typical Venezuelan types of cheese you'll find in a cachapa at any Venezuelan restaurant) and the guy clearly had no idea of what those were. I'm assuming this guy's name is Cesar P because that's the name printed on the receipt. Another employee came to take my order (a girl), after the first guy said OUT LOUD and with a horrible attitude "You come take this order". This girl was more approachable and appropriate, just nicer overall. I'll say this: food was good and prices are reasonable. However, maybe the owner of this restaurant, Mr Larry Villalobos or whoever is in charge, should prepare their staff better when it comes to venezuelan food. It doesn't matter where the employee is from, as long as they know what they're doing and know what they're asked for by costumers. MANNERS!! Make sure all your employees have manners.
