We had dinner at White Maize during our trip to New York, and it was such a great introduction to Venezuelan food. We started with the vegetarian appetizers - the mandocas and tequeños. The mandocas were on the sweeter side, while the tequeños (fried dough filled with cheese) were warm, crispy, and absolutely delicious. For my main, I ordered the Pabellón Vegetariano arepa, and it was packed with flavor. It was fresh, satisfying, and one of those meals that leaves you already thinking about coming back. I also tried the sugarcane drink, which was just okay compared to how much I loved the food. The restaurant itself is clean, modern, and really cute, making the whole dining experience even better. Mmmm, tasty Venezuelan in the heart of the city--albeit it with the Manhattan mark-up. $18 for an arepa is....wow. On the other hand, you don't have to schlep to Union City, which is probably where the best Venezuelan fare in the Tri-State area is. So...there's that. Definitely come with a group of four (more will be a bit of a squeeze, as the space isn't big--another Manhattan tax). Get: - Mandocas: Kick off your Venezuelan journey with these sweet plantain fritters soaked in raw sugar cane syrup and stuffed with Venezuelan farmer's cheese... - Tequenos: Or get these--a darker, sweeter, similar concept - Guac & Tostones: I didn't actually want these, but our friends needed a more familiar safety blanket during their intro to V food. The fried green plantain accompaniments were a nice change, though - La de Pollo Cachapa: If you love sweet corn, I can't think of a better representation than cachapas. This was a tasty offering, though half the size of others I've gotten--but the pulled chicken and cheese filling was flavorful, as was the corn crepe itself. Cutting it to share, though...that's a messy endeavor - Venezuelan Ceviche: I would skip this unless you really, really want seafood, but that's because I prefer the zesty, citrus-y Peruvian-style ceviche over the tomato-bomb variants. There also wasn't a TON of seafood because, well, Manhattan mark-up. So save your $$$. - La de Pabellon & Vegetariano Arepas: No Venezuelan meal is complete without arepas, IMO. We got two, because we were greedy little piggies. I actually preferred the Veg one, which was overstuffed with avocado, black beans, sweet plantains, and cheese--mmm. The other was filled with shredded beef, which is a solid, tasty choice if you must consume animal flesh. As with the cachapa, though, cutting these to share was a nightmare in spilled cheese and splashed beans. Let's just say, we might've drained the restaurant's supply of wet wipes by the end. For drinky drinks, we opted for the Venezuelan sugarcane classic Papelon (which wasn't as sweet as you might think), and the freshly made Passion Fruit Juice. Might try their cocktails next time, but I just can't pay those Manhattan mark-up prices anymore. Service was fine, and the ambience--true to the restaurant's name--skews clean and white. Note that the Chelsea website's menu is hard to read, but the Brooklyn location's menu is slightly different and doesn't include everything that Chelsea has. read more

3 of us showed up with no reservation on a Sunday afternoon. We were able to be seated. Attention and service is kind and attentive. Space is tiny but the interior is beautiful. We had just missed the live music. Drinks are strong. I liked mine I swapped the bourbon for rum. Food was delicious. All the meats were savory. We did expect the arepitas to be filled not make your own which didn't feel clear. The food is a decent portion but could have used more arepas. The mandocas delicious! Came to White Maize for a Wednesday night dinner with friends. Booking a day-of table for five at 7pm through Resy was easy, with plenty of availability. Walk-ins might be trickier, though, as there was a steady stream of people coming in until around 8:30pm. The cocktail menu had a nice variety with some creative combinations. I got "La Fresa", made with the Chilean liquor Pisco El Gobernador, strawberry, lemon, and pistachio. It was light and refreshing. Others in my party ordered the red sangria and enjoyed it as well. The food is Venezuelan, but definitely tailored to a Manhattan crowd compared to the more traditional spots you'd find in Jackson Heights. That said, it was still quite good and reasonably priced for Manhattan (appetizers $10-15, entrées around $20) though more than you'd pay in Queens. The arepas rellenas were the highlight of the meal and stuffed with the traditional fillings. Both La Llanera (steak, chicken, queso llanero) and La de Pabellón (shredded beef, plantains, black beans, queso llanero) were hearty and flavorful. The appetizers leaned a bit more experimental. Their interpretation of mandocas were sweet plantain-and-cheese balls, while the chicharrón arepitas were fried corn-flour balls mixed with chicharrón--different from the mini arepas that the name suggests, but still tasty. Dessert was the weakest part of the meal. We tried the quesillo and tres leches. The quesillo was a bit firm and dry on top, and the tres leches wasn't quite moist enough. Overall, we had an enjoyable meal with good drinks and great service. As far as sit-down spots in Manhattan (especially Chelsea) go, White Maize is an affordable little gem that balances authenticity with a bit of inventiveness. read more

Visited 2/21/26. Came with a group of 3 and were able to easily make a reservation the day before. Started off with drinks then moved onto arepas. I got the Bestia arepa my sister got a veg one and the other member of our party got a Caesar. The meat in the bestia was well cooked but I will say that there wasn't a huge balance between that and the rest of the ingredients. The meats were also different temps. The place is cute but when we went for a Sunday brunch. the live music was defeaningly loud when we went, making the place less ideal for conversation. Some folx even left the restaurant after walking in and hearing how loud it was. I'd go back but would avoid going when they have loud music. If they didn't amplify the music, it probably would have been fine. Even when I asked for the speaker volume to be turned down, it was barely turned down. We went on Valentine's Day and I ended up getting glutened, which was extremely frustrating and disappointing. Service was very slow, and the portions were tiny for how expensive the food was--it honestly felt more like a tapas place without being labeled as one. The waiter seemed overwhelmed, and we waited a long time for our food. To be fair, he was polite and did his best under the circumstances. I was saddened when Caracas Arepa Bar recently closed, so I'm glad that a few new Venezuelan spots have popped up to take its place. White Maize + is the sit-down version of their original to-go outpost in Brooklyn. The vibe is a bit frazzled. It is apparently a fast casual lunch spot during the day, but during the course of our dinner, a DJ began his set. It was fairly empty, but picked up a little momentum later in the evening, and service was very friendly. I enjoyed the pabellon vegetarian empanada with the typical Guyanese white cheese, avocado and maduros, although I prefer the crunchiness of the version at Guacuco in Brooklyn. My family was very much in the mood for good Venezuelan food, so we got off the subway here couple miles early to try White Maize to go based on the reviews of their Brooklyn location. We were not disappointed at all. Everything we had was so good. I especially recommend La Bestia Arepa. But honestly absolutely everything. My family ordered was very good. Everything on the menu is gluten-free. The service is a walk up window on the sidewalk. The place is definitely designed to be a to go spot; however, they constructed a cute covered sitting area with For tables and benches, and the cashier/waitress offers very personal service. The on street covered eating area is actually very cute and in the evening allows a breeze to pass while guarding ears from noise and smells from passing cars.
