This is their story: At Los Hermanos you can basically find almost every Dominican Dish there is at some point during the week so call ahead to find out the days we make certain dishes such as Sancocho and Ox-Tails. Los Hermanos started out as a small Bodega. Back then the twins were only 10 years old and so their parents would bring them to the store to help out. During this time their mother would cook for them and the rest of the family.The smell of home cooked Dominican food would fill the Bodega and soon the customers who frequented the Bodega would try to buy their mothers food. Eventually their father bought a steam table and soon the mother was bringing in more money into the business with her cooking than the actual Bodega would. This led to a few remodeling sessions over the years and full reign was given to the Mother to do as she pleased bringing in a very large amount of loyal customers over the years. For the folks complaining about how the inside decor isn't welcoming, yadda yadda (roll of the eyes), you can plainly see that it's cafeteria style and they're not about ambiance but more about authentic comforting food. It reminds me of being back in the mom and pop restaurants in DR and I love it. There was no street parking so we parked in the Target parking garage which was a quick walk to shove our faces. I was so excited to have authentic Dominican food that I ordered most of my favorites. The lady initially helping me was very sweet and welcoming. She let me pick out my chicharrones and even gave her advice (which I took) on which was better. My only complaint is I wanted to order sopa de pollo to go and the other lady gave my bf Sancocho and said, "it's sopa de pollo". No sister, big difference between the two. Luckily. The rare place in DC to get food from DR. It is casual and very affordable. We fed two for less than $18 and still had leftovers. Can't beat that. Our fave item was the beef empanadas, which come in the fried style but are very hearty and flavorful. We also ordered the mofongo, which we didn't see on the menu but saw mentioned in many reviews here. When we asked they said they can make it but it takes awhile, so most people call ahead to order it. It came with three scoops of the good stuff, super garlicky, and topped with pickled onions. As a fan of pickled vegetables, I loved the addition of the onions. As far as mofongos go, we still prefer La Famosa's, but you can never have too much mofongo. You can get it in many different varieties if you want meat added. Bonus points because they are one of the only spots in Columbia Heights open on Tuesdays. read more

As a Puerto Rican, there aren't really any Puerto Rican dining places in this area, so when I moved here and wanted comfort I needed to cook it for myself. Then I found Los Hermanos. I love the a pernil (roasted pork shoulder), arroz con habichuela roja (white rice and the red beans), or arroz con gandules (yellow rice and pigeon peas). (I'm hungry just thinking about it lol). The fried plantains are made to order and you get a big plate for one side order! There are many options to choose from as well, -chicken, goat, pork, steak, white or yellow rice, two different style of beans, sweet plantains, etc. All are made authentically and delicious. Fantastic food at a great price! This place is so lowkey but as soon as you walk in, the scent of savory Dominican food hits you. Very no frills, hole in the wall feels where you will be given a massive amount of comfort food. I got a platter with plaintains, rice, and the juiciest, tender stewed Dominican chicken. The presentation isn't always pretty, but there is not one place in DC that I've been to that the taste of the food compares. You really can't compare because Los Hermanos is in a category all by themselves. Now I know they're a Dominican restaurant, and I'm not Dominican. Their food is always delicious. Empanadas are addictively good. Their various stews are hearty and delicious. But what I was most impressed with was their roasted vegetable. It sounds so simple and common in any restaurants but many restaurants don't cook right. They can be mushy, bland or just disgusting. Los Hermanos makes the best roasted veggie. Los Hermanos is a pretty popular Dominican restaurant located near the DC USA Mall. And it's just a few minutes from the Columbia Heights Metro Station. I have been wanting to visit Los Hermanos since I moved to the DMV area. I finally check them out. It is a simple, small family-owned restaurant with loud festive music. There are few tables and it's more like a biergarten style seating. I popped in an hour before closing time and it was still busy. It's cafeteria style. There were three side options, three rice options, and about five different meats. I know they have more offerings, but I'm not sure if they just ran out because they were about to close or if they change their daily offerings. I ended up getting an order of arroz con gandules ( rice with pigeon peas), pork chop, and fried plantains. They serve plenty of food. So come very hungry. Everything, everything was delicious, especially those pork chops. 5 stars. read more

I visited Los Hermanos a couple of years ago and loved it. It is run by two Dominican brothers and their mom, so it's a family operation. They are the nicest people!! Their food is totally authentic and delicious I particularly loved their "mangú" (mashed green plantains) served with vinegary pickled red onions. I don't know how they are coping right now during the pandemic, but as soon as I am vaccinated I will go and have some of their delicious "arroz y habichuelas" (White rice and red beans)! Los Hermanos is a dying breed amongst the overpriced gentrification that is D.C. My meal? About $10. Fed my girlfriend and I easily making it a very cheap meal. What's even more extraordinary? The food tastes like my mom made it and I'm not even Spanish. Here's what I mean by that statement - Dominican's make their meat super soft and flavorful. The pork reminded me of "thit kho" which is softly stewed meat in South-East Asian cuisine. The similarities gave me a comfort I'd only get if I went home and ate a meal made by my mom. This is what I loved about Los Hermanos. The authenticity and the humble prices are the reasons why I gave them a 5 star. So sad I'm giving this bad review, this review and rating is for their customer service. I had been trying to contact this restaurant for 3 weeks. I wrote to them on their website about catering and never got back to me. Then I called and called and 2 weeks before my event a lady answered, very nice and gave me an email to the owner, I wrote to him that same day. Waited 3 days and called back, the same lady answered saying they were going to look at my email. Another 2 days passes by, so mind you that's another week, no my event is a week away, I decided to call one more time and the same lady picked up saying the owner was working on a menu and pricing for my event and that I would get that email that evening or the next day, guess what, the next day rolls in and nothing, waited the whole day and I said forget it. Thank goodness there are other places with good prices and way better customer service. So sad that these people's customer service was the worst I've encountered in a while. This is a pretty solid cafeteria style restaurant serving Latin American food. I don't claim to be an expert on latinx food, and when it comes to restaurants like this, I just go with whatever the workers like. In this instance, that meant i can yellowish rice with peas, a chicken dish, and pulled pork. They're pretty generous with the portions, and the chicken dish was definitely the stand out dish. It was flavorful and a little bit tangy, which kind of reminded of chicken adobo a little bit. The pulled pork was definitely better than your average pulled pork, although I think having some sauces would have made the dish taste better. The rice was excellent but it was a pretty greasy, so I would not eat here everyday. Although certainly not the healthiest, the food tasted delicious, and the meal was cheap!! read more
