My Dominican wife discovered this place and of course we had to make a trip to try it. They have it setup like a cafeteria and you request what you want off the line. I had the pernil, rice, and beans, and found it be delicious although a lot of fat on the pernil. The plate was huge and filling regardless. My wife ordered plantains which took longer than expected to be ready compared to the rest of the food, and didn't come to the table until we were nearly finished with our meal. My wife was bothered that it took so long and made it a point to say something to the cashier. Given the lack of Dominican restaurants in the area, I'm sure we would return. It's a good drive for us from VA so we'll see how soon we return.

I finally made it! This place has been on my "must try" list forever! I don't live nearby, so to be "in the area" gave me the perfect opportunity to stop by. It was everything I expected! The food was on point! Authentic flavors, perfect portions and the quality was impeccable. The service was fast and efficient. We were greeted when we walked in and the young lady waiting on us was extremely patient. She even showed me the size of the fish to help me decide. It's a fast casual establishment with comfortable indoor and outdoor seating. Definitely a place I could visit 2 to 3 times a week if I lived closer. I can't wait to visit again. I encourage you to try them for yourself. You won't be disappointed. I promise!

It's pretty a big space, with ample seating inside and out. My platter of chicken bandera and rice was flavorful but wished it would have been served hot; it was room temperature. The cold potato salad that accompanied as a side was respectable. Tried an order of pork rib belly tidbits--different, meaty, very crispy. I ended the meal with pineapple upside down cake. The cake part was delicious however the pineapple on top was chewy. There's a gentle spirit within. Staff was earnest, if a bit timid, seemed reluctant to explain the various dishes to me when asked. The twin brothers who founded Mecho's have a compelling story. This new spot is an outgrowth of their first restaurant, Los Hermanos, in Columbia Heights.

All the food choices looked good! The plate I got was ! Everything was well cooked chicken and pernil were juicy. Maduros were crispy and soft. Rice was perfect with some of the sauce on there. They had great music playing and everyone in there was chilling and having a great time. Service was great and workers were nice and friendly. They also have events such as dance classes and karaoke that you might wanna check out!

The good: portions are huge! Flavor is on point. I am Dominican so when I go out I look for the "close to home made" flavor. They do have that. Where they go wrong is everywhere else. I walked in with my husband and no one greeted/acknowledged us for at least 5 mins (yes she was right in front of me filling an online order). It is kinda cafeteria style as you walk in and order from what is available (except for a few dishes which are made to order). I made the mistake of ordering tostones (made to order) which didn't come out for close to 45 mins. The restaurant itself is small but LOUD. The music is blasting n you can't hear yourself think. The bar occupies almost 25% of the real estate and there is zero table service. The ladies noticed I was Dominican as I was ordering and attitude changed for the better but that shouldn't be the case. Next time I'll take it to go. But it is so far away that I prob just won't come back. I gave it a 3 solely on food. Service would be a 2.

I didn't think I'd find good Dominican food outside of North Jersey but was I wrong. This spot was super legit everything was delicious. My Puerto Rican fam completely devoured the food. It was exactly what we needed before our long drive back to Jersey. It was so good I forgot to fight them over the word concon vs pegao, had me leaving there saying "que lo que mi gente esa vaina estaba bien durisimo" Who am I?

Friday 9/27/2024 I first visited this spot nearly 2 years ago with my dad but I didn't remember much from the experience. I had saw a TikTok from a foodie influencer (big schlim) who went here and decided that I wanted to try it again but for real this time. I made an order in person for takeout and got: pork chimi (pulled pork sandwich) with sweet plantains $10.50, pernil (Dominican pulled pork) bandera with sweet plantains and Moro de gandules (rice & peas) $14.75, chicharron de pollo (fried chicken) with arroz blanco (white rice & pinto beans) and boiled yuca $15.75, chicken empanada $3, and beef empanada $3. The service was nice and friendly. I wanted to get the mofongo but they didn't have any at the time of my visit. Also I saw ALOT of reviews praising this spot for their generous portions but I disagree. You get a good portion of the rice but the side and meat is quite limited. - Both The chicken empanada and beef empanada were decent but I liked the beef empanada a bit more. - The pernil (Dominican pulled pork) was solid but I've had better. Some of the pieces were dry and some were what I kinda expected. Also it was a lot better when paired with a sauce (I used bbq sauce and it was good). - The Chicharron de pollo (fried chicken) was good but I expected more in terms of the portions. - The Arroz blanco (white rice & pinto beans) and Moro de gandules (rice with pigeon peas) were both alright. - The boiled yuca was okay but then again I've never been a big fan of boiled yuca. - The Sweet plantains were made well and were very good. - The pork chimi (pulled pork sandwich) was very good and was easily my favorite item. They use ciabatta bread to pair with the delicious & juicy pulled pork. Overall, this was a solid Dominican food experience that I would come back to and recommend (try that pork chimi). The limiting portions for the side and meat are what hold this spot back from being a 5 star in my eyes.

4/13/24 Our last day in DC, and we had to get the hubby his native food It's a big space in a shopping mall You order and take the food to a table. Inside or outside. Hubby wanted the Tres Golpes, but they were out of eggs, so hubby got extra cheese. We can't figure out how they did it, but the cheese was so soft and melty. Usually, it's a little gummy. And the mangu was so soft and buttery. Since it was close to lunch, I opted for the Chuleta y Arroz con Gandules. Which was good. They don't serve as much food as the restaurants in NY/NJ. I had no leftovers.

Mecho's has been on my list for a little while. I'm in the shopping center from time to time so I finally decided to try over the weekend. They had beautiful holiday decor throughout, a full service bar, and plenty of seating. I couldn't stay so I was placing an order to go. The line wasn't long when I arrived but it moved pretty slow. They were handling customers in line and delivery and pick up orders simultaneously so they could benefit from a better system to keep things moving smoothly. I also wish they had labels for the food to make ordering a little simpler because I had a few questions about what's what. I ordered the yellow rice and peas, pinto beans, mixed vegetables, and stewed chicken. The portion sizes were nice. There was more rice in the plate than anything else but it tasted good. I also ordered the flan and Dominican cake. I didn't really like either. The cake had a decent flavor profile but the actual cake was hard and too spongy. While I was there, a lot of people ordered the soup. It looked delicious so I want to go back and try it one day.

Food is fine. Typically get stewed beef or pollo guisado, tostones, and yellow rice with black beans. Overall I'd say buffet quality in terms of seasoning and flavor - middle of the lane comfort food. Reliable, doesn't make a statement, but doesn't try to either. I rate at 3 stars because it can be oddly unreliable. Sometimes you go in and they're just out of basic things, like no chicken of any kind or no black beans. This isn't a place that serves up a huge variety of things, it's surprising how they can run out of basics.

I love coming here for authentic Dominican food. I usually get the chicken mofongo and it's delicious! The service is always friendly and the restaurant is always clean. I would recommend visiting for a great food experience

My first time was Valentine's Day, and the restaurant, while calm, was chaotic, AKA the full menu was not available. The second attempt to dine there, the staff member (whose name I forgot, please charge it to my head and not my heart!) informed us before we sat down that the evening service was a limited menu. To entice us to return and ensure consistent customer-centric service, the bar manager invited us to return on the first night and asked the staff to inform us when we arrived. Sure enough, the next day, when we arrived, there was a note for the staff informing them that they should be expecting us. The vibe in Lydia's is always chill! The music is always good and at a volume where you and others can still enjoy each other's company with conversation if desired. Overall, the food, service, and ambiance at this establishment should be the standard for many others. Well done, Lydia's. It was also my first time trying Malawian cuisine, so I was genuinely excited to experience something different. I went with a group of friends after an event, which worked out perfectly because we were able to taste a little bit of everything. I ordered the Brussels sprouts as my starter; they were good, nicely seasoned. My only issue? Timing. They didn't come out first. Everyone else had their food, and my "starter" came right before my entrée, which kind of defeated the purpose. For my main, I had the shrimp and salmon rasta pasta. It was good...creamy, flavorful, but definitely spicy. Not unbearable, just be prepared if heat isn't your thing. My mocktail was refreshing and good too... just small. A couple real sips and it was gone. Overall, the service was good. They were accommodating and made sure our group was seated comfortably, even moving tables around so we had a better setup. I appreciated that. The ambiance was very Black eclectic: cool R&B vibes, nice energy, a solid spot to gather and vibe. Checl out my pics! I'll be rating each dish I tried on a 10 point scale.
