"Takoma Eats Location" Talk about DELICIOUS!!! My friend told me about a place in Takoma with various places to eat. I get there and notice Jam Doung Style on the kiosk menu. I've seen this place several times on North Capitol Street but never tried them. Today ended up being the day. I ordered the Jerk wings and mmmhmm mmmhmm mmmhmmm. They were finger licking good. They were extremely well seasoned. Hot and ready and slid off the bone. Some of the best Jerk wings I have ever had. My wife ordered the oxtail. Soft, tender and at a great price. I can't wait to try their brick and mortar location.

sorrel wasted in the bag it came in

Ordered off of Uber Eats... it was terrible. Seriously. i always have heard great things about Jam Doung Style and wanted to try it out since my usual Jamaican spot, Negril, had closed. Nope. Nope. Nope. I ordered a beef patty, mac & cheese, a jerk hot dog and a sorrel. Firstly, the bag the sorrel came in had its juice spilled in the bag. Sorrel has a strong taste, but this one had a strong alcohol type taste to it. Very unbalanced in flavor. The first bite i took out of the beef patty was just breading and no meat filling. The jerk hot dog just tasted like a mildly spicy hot dog with not a hint of jerk flavor. The biggest disappointment was the mac & cheese. As soon as i opened the container, i could see it was DRY. i gave it the benefit of the doubt and tried it. it tasted just how it looked -- bland. Like boiled noodles with burnt cheese sporadically placed on top.

Was told that this is one of those native-to-DC must try places, I can tell they have been there often and they're family-owned. Upon our pick-up delivery its become apparent that since Jam Doung Style has offered take-out options online, its really swarmed the place to just pump out a lot of food, and with all this traction that is great and of course, well deserved for a long-standing brick and mortar restaurant who has not commercialized and has maintained reasonably affordable food to its locals and DC customers. However, with this comes the need for there to be a re-evaluation of the quality of food that is coming out of the restaurant. Granted we ordered dishes traditionally made with bone in proteins and ordered about 2.5 hours before closing, but our plates made their weight in bones. And with special order of gravy had fully been absorbed the rice rather than sitting and flavoring the meat. I imagine by the end of the night, all of the bones have broken down and reached the end of the pot, which is probably where we got our portions. However, the prospect of ordering curry and oxtail should always be exciting and celebratory! Why give a customer only bones? I would imagine this is a product of just having too many orders come in that you just have to get those deliverables out of the way, especially since now the in-person experience with Jam Doung Style is mostly occupied by takeout delivery services. That said, the flavors were so good and left us wanting more, and it was definitely worth a re-try, maybe towards the beginning of the day but that's good to know now. Coco bread was light and fluffy but smashed by the aluminum packaging at the bottom of our delivery bag. Plantains were perfectly fried with a gooey sweet bright golden interior. Rum cake was dense and saturated in rum flavor, also got a very small sliver.

Restaurant has been renovated in recent years to include more space and some indoor seating compared to the smaller carry-out only location it has been. Food: My husband and I have only ever ordered their jerk chicken platters. The 'small' portion is more than enough for us. I usually get the 'small' portion to include jerk chicken, cabbage, and rice and peas. My husband orders the same, but sometimes chooses to get mac&cheese instead of cabbage. It's always delicious; however, there has been a few times where one of us has found a bay leaf in our food. While it is easy to take them out, I believe it should be taken out before customers are given their order because they are not supposed to be eaten and could be a significant choking hazard for someone not paying attention while eating. They do offer some deserts as well, but I've never tried them. Service: Good yet could be improved to include another person at the front. Every time we've gone, there is usually an older Jamaican woman and I believe her granddaughter working at the front end of the restaurant taking orders via walk-in, phone, or bagging up orders for Uber Eats and the likes. During lunch time, it can take pretty much someone's entire lunch period to get a meal in hand. Value: Approx $10-$20 per meal. Great value for the amount of food, in my opinion. However, they charge an extra percentage (I believe 4%), to anyone paying with a card instead of cash. Personally, this makes the experience less pleasant for me because in 2024 many people do not carry cash, and why is it that high? Ambiance: Busy restaurant so expect the phone to keep ringing and a constant flow of customers. During our last trip in Sept 2024, R&B music was playing and the videos to the songs were playing on a tv. My husband and I dined in and ate at a small 2 person table downstairs. They now have upstairs seating, but it always seems to be closed off so I'm not sure if that's for large parties only or not. Location: Definitely not a fan of this part. 1724 North Capitol St NW, Washington, DC 20002; on one of the busiest corners of D.C. Finding parking in the area is often horrible. If you're not dining in, I highly suggest calling in your order or ordering online: (202) 483-2445 orderjamdoungstyle.com

I feel scammed. I ordered the Brown Stew Chicken, and while I understand bone-in chicken is standard, there was barely any meat. The cooking was inconsistent. I was fighting for my life with some of those pieces. Overall, it just wasn't a satisfying meal, and my craving for Jamaican food remains unfulfilled. Also, $7 for this tiny cake...nah. Rice, cabbage, and plantains were good.

    Red Velvet Cake
    Grace J.

I ordered a combo meal with oxtails and curry chicken, which came with sides of macaroni, rice and peas, and cabbage. I also added a beef patty and red velvet cake on the side. The oxtails were the highlight of my meal. They were cooked very well and practically fell off the bone. The beef patty was amazing with a great amount of spice, which I loved as a fan of spicy foods. However, the curry chicken was underwhelming. It lacked the spice factor I enjoy and was slightly dry. I prefer my curry chicken to have more juices to slather over the rice for better flavor. The cabbage was fairly soggy and not enjoyable. The macaroni was good, but the rice and peas were not to my taste. In the future, I'll definitely opt for white rice instead. The red velvet cake was enjoyable, though a bit different from what I'm used to. It was still pretty good, and I would recommend it. Overall, this was an okay visit. If you prefer foods with a kick, this might not be the place for you, as the spice factor was missing for me. I ordered through DoorDash, so I can't speak on the in-person service.

The curry goat was amazing 10/10 seasoned and not many bones. The Mac and cheese lacked flavor in my opinion 3/5. The rice and peas and cabbage was good. I would definitely return. Service was great food was ready soon as I arrived. Place is clean and cute

Haven't visited this place in so long but its always been so good. But this visit was underwhelming and I am a little disappointed. I got the BBQ WINGS MAC AND CABBAGE and my mom had the CURRY SHRIMP RICE & PEAS AND CABBAGE. The wings were pretty good but the Mac just needed salt & pepper and a sharp cheese. The rice was over cooked and the cabbage as well. I came for jerk wings but they were sold out so I got jerk sauce on the side. The shrimp were inconsistent texture wise, some were mushy and some were rubbery. The pineapple ginger drink was good just super sweet. I also had a beef pattie and it was literally 2teaspoons of beef inside I was shocked. We paid $53 together for the food and just wish the quality was more consistent like it was before. The staff was nice and the food doesn't take long to get ready because it's already made.

My favorite thing to order is the curry chicken lunch special. When I have some extra coins, I always add the mac n cheese!

Was planning on going to Jerk at Nite but didn't realize they don't open till 7 on Saturday!?? Anyway found this hidden gem and ordered online. I got the dark jerk chicken entree with Mac & cabbage. Absolutely loved it! Nice spice to the chicken. Inside is clean and pick-up is very organized! Will be back!

Not just knowledgeable, intuitive. The kind of service where you feel guided, not managed. He brought extra garlic aioli before we asked, we laughed, because he was absolutely right. That set the tone. The Aloo and Channa pies came out crisp and golden, with a filling that was warm, spiced, and balanced. Not heavy, not trying to prove anything, just well executed. The crab accras followed, light, clean fry, no grease, which matters. The sauces did their job. Each one added something instead of just sitting there looking pretty. Cocktails held their own. The West Indian Old Fashioned had depth without getting muddy. The Savannah was bright and easy in the best way. Together, they framed the food instead of competing with it. Then the Bake & Fish sandwiches. Solid on their own, but Tim brought lemon slices without prompting, and that was the move. That little hit of acid sharpened everything. Same intuition, twice. That's not luck. The kitchen shows restraint, which is where the confidence lives. This isn't "let's throw spice at it and call it Caribbean." The flavor is intentional, layered, and controlled. I would only recommend this spot to Americans (who've never had Jamaican food).

The food was . This was my first time trying Doubles and It was so good. If you're a fan of chickpeas and curry, it's a great starter. I had the mixed platter with curry chicken, curry shrimp and oxtail with basmati rice and spinach. It was sooooooo delicious. A healthy portion so I was able to take half home. Parking is horrible so brace yourself. I'm going back for sure!

I mean there was only another couple at the time I visited but also the food came out quickly so huge plus! And the restaurant is spacious and casual so enough space for large parties. Overall I enjoyed it but there are a couple things that fell short! I ordered the chicken roti platter. 1.The roti! It's a very small portion served in a small coconut shaped bowl compared to the amount of food you got on the platter. I thought more was coming and unfortunately it was balled up in shredded little pieces that were kind of dry and i couldn't eat it properly with my sides. I thought maybe I had a bad batch but my friend had the same portion and complaint. Unfortunately no pic of that. 2: Honestly the plating is meant to be aesthetically pleasing but it was very hard to eat bone-in chicken out of a bowl on a saucer full of more bowls with a knife and fork. It was better when I took it to go and had a plate at home. Please reconsider this for the diners experience. 3. The doubles was my fave! It's a small app but very delicious and had a slight kick to it.

Decor was simple nice and neat. They're sitting at the bar and the tables. I noticed the bar seats have those little purse hooks under the table, which are nice for those so inclined. Jamaican music playing at nice volume that permitted conversation while keeping a bouncy vibe. Service was quick and friendly. I ask for recommendation between two drinks and he recommended the purple dolphin. GREAT choice, I mix a bourbon elderflower and Plum infused syrup. Headed nice flavor profile of sweet with still the bourbon kick. Jerk chicken rasta pasta was OUTSTANDING with plenty of creamy, peppery KICK. It was honestly more spicy than other rasta pastas I have had but in an excellent way. EXCELLENT experience. Will add to heavy rotation when in the Navy Yard.

Bartender said he was the manager as well but did not act as so. Left the bar for several minutes while fetching "free" food for friend. Meanwhile my guest and I were still waiting on to-go boxes we requested. I did order a second drink but never got it. Ordered to go food as well was told "rice & peas" would take 25min to make I agreed to take to go along with cabbage and coco bread. Oh I also witnessed an off duty worker come in to assemble his marijuana at an open view table. Worker from the back noticed and told "manager/bartender" he was busy with other customers. That worker who noticed was able to get him to leave but he did return and left again. It was just a lot of unprofessional behavior going on. Even had to ask for my check amongst all the nonsense. Now concerning my food I ordered chicken Rasta pasta.....spicy dish. No flavor just spice. Update 13hrs later: my stomach hurtssss!! But let's talk about the side dishes to got to go: the rice was stiff. Cabbage has an overpowering vinegar taste (kinda like pickled peppers) I threw it away. First and last time for me.
