Took my dad here for Father's Day and as a Caribbean, he approved! We ordered the jerk wings (a bit spicy as a warning), beef pie, oxtails and paratha tin boxes (with chicken). We loved the beef pies so much that we ordered some to go - must try them! My parents felt the oxtails would have been better in a stew but still enjoyed it. It was good! It has all the core menu items for St. James and seems a little less busy. Which is a good thing! We ordered the bake and salt fish to start and it was great. There was avocado at the top and a mixture of cilantro along with some pepper spices. It was really good and blended well! It was not on the menu, but I got a roti with goat curry and it was great. Had some impressive meals in this Michelin restaurant during my visit to DC. The first time was for lunch. Ordered the Oxtail bowl. By default it came with two pieces of oxtails but that was too much meat for me so I asked for just one piece and more veggies. My server was kind enough to do such modification for me. The oxtail was fork-tender, had lots of collagen, beefy, and had a distinct sourness. The pickled veggies (cucumber slaw & bell peppers) provided a different type of sourness and a hint of heat. Overall very good, though the flavors from the meat and veggies were so strong that I could not have a clear idea of the flavor of the coconut rice. Also, I wish there could be more jus because it went soooooo well with the rice! The second time was for dinner. Tried the Pepperpot, Crispy Kale and Hops. The Pepperpot was a stew of oxtails, cowheels and beef chucks. Very beefy and spicy, a little bit sour/tangy, and very earthy. The sauce was heavenly. It was served with a small bowl of coconut rice and 2 pieces of hops. The rice was a little bit sweet and salty. The hops were similar to dinner rolls, except that they were more dense and firmer. I thought the Crispy Kale was like fried cabbage in soul food but it was literally fried -- so it was very crispy. Too oily for me. I like the mango chutney, though. Service was good and quick. Let me break it down so you understand why I love this place. The Hakka pork ribs isn't your typical ribs, it has an authentic level of herbs and spices on it which provided just enough Caribbean flavors. It was topped with picked cucumber and peppers-all of which I ate! To accompany the dish, they added a side of their delicious coconut rice and honestly, that could have been eaten by itself because there is something sweet and savory about it lol I'm serious! I actually eat it without anything several times. They added a sauce for the ribs and I must say that it gave the dish a sprinkle of love. Overall, this was incredible! Love this place for so many reasons! First off- the food and flavors alone will have me back. I loved the jerk chicken and the sauce that came with it and need to come back for the rum punch. Had lunch with an old childhood friend and the place has a great location on H Street. The food on the lunch menu is nicely portioned. I had the Trini-Chinese Chicken bowl with their Trini-Style Eggplant pie. The sauce that comes with the eggplant pie is a great match but beware! It has a spicy kick! My friend had the Curried Chicken Bowl he said it was good. Our server was attentive and was ready to answer questions about the dishes since this was a first time visit. My first review of the month! Automatic 5 stars because I took my brother here for lunch and he LOVED it, both the food and the vibe (great music and service!) The Trinidadian beef pie was delicious, and served very hot, which is the best and only way to truly enjoy savory pastries. The dhalpuri roti wrap with chicken and potatoes was excellent, so packed that the filling was literally bursting out of the dhalpuri and SO GOOD. The sorrel beverage was a little sweeter than I expected, but still very refreshing and good. Cane is in a cozy space with a modern minimalist vibe, and being just a few blocks from Union station makes it very easily accessible. Stopped by Cane's for lunch with a friend and had a really great time. The space is small and welcoming with lots of natural light that makes it feel open. I would definitely recommend making a reservation since it can fill up quickly. Luckily, when we got there, we had the place to ourselves which is always a plus! I had the Dhalpuri Roti with curried chicken and potatoes, and enjoyed every bite. It was full of flavor and filling so much that I had to take half of it to go. I really wanted to like it here, but this is just another Carribean restaurant that isn't authentic because they add cilantro to everything. I've visited many parts of the Caribbean and have never had cilantro on my food. **And as someone allergic to cilantro, you need to list it as an ingredient on your menu to prevent serious issues. Miami does not explore the vast variety of Trinidadian cuisine. It was nice to see roti, curry, pelau, stews, calalloo, and so much more on the menu! I was excited to try the food. We slipped in right before the kitchen closed and they were welcoming and gracious enough to seat us. It was smaller than I expected but very cozy and the service was attentive and fast. We food was amazing! Really upscale Trini fusion food and we ate until we were full and satisfied. The other part... We should have came in earlier because unfortunately we spent the rest of the night with food poisoning. Maybe there was a food handling snafu at the end of the evening. This time decided to try some new items, including the shrimp wontons, the snapper, and the ribs. Loved the ribs. Felt the snapper was a good portion size and fried well, but could have packed more flavor. And also felt the shrimp wontons were just okay, could have also packed more flavor. It was very tasty and complimented the oxtail well. One funny thing was that the food came within 5 mins of ordering which is wild (maybe they already had it made imo). For appetizers, we got the jerk wings and hops. The chicken had solid heat and was juicy, while the bread with their special butter was absorbing the spiciness from the wings. I really wanted to love this place. As someone from the Caribbean, I came to Cane with high hopes and an empty stomach. I left with low expectations and a full plate of regret. I've been a few times now trying to give it a fair shot, but Cane keeps proving that vibes alone can't carry a restaurant. What really surprises me is all the glowing reviews. They serve it in a bowl so small I thought it was a sample. Then they throw in one massive piece of bone or fat like it's a prize in a Cracker Jack box, and still have the audacity to charge $30. The meat? Blink and you'll miss it. I ordered it twice hoping the first time was a fluke. It wasn't. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, you owe me oxtail. The curry bowl? Another letdown. It's not bad, but it's giving "this-is-my-first-time-making-curry." Where's the seasoning? The depth? The drama? Caribbean curry is supposed to slap you in the face with flavor and richness. This one just politely nods. The rice is the same story. Not offensive, but not impressive either. It always tastes like something's missing -- like it was made in a hurry without any love.
