I was visiting the area to assist at a Yelp Elite Event and was trying to find some good lunch on my way to the airport. I ended up parking pretty far from the restaurant I'd intended to go to, when I noticed a "2025 Michelin" sign in the window of this little place. Of course, I had to go in. Pretty sure this was my first time eating at a Michelin-star restaurant! We just don't have those up here (yet). The server brought me a menu (and a beer) and explained how everything worked. And while I was tempted to order one of everything, it was just lunch after all so I settled on their ahhhhmazing Oxtail Bowl. I subbed pelau for the coconut rice and wow...just this layer itself would have made an excellent meal and I would happily eat a bowl of just pelau! But of course I had to dive into the succulent, fall-off-the-bone oxtails, too. They had clearly been cooked in some kind of magical way, and were presented with a rich, sinfully good sauce and topped with house-pickled vegetables. My only regret is there wasn't enough space in my belly to order one of their appies or desserts! I guess this means I'll have to come back. I used to come to Cane years ago, so I'm glad to see they're still up and running! It's a pretty small space, but I actually like that about it. We stopped by on a Saturday night, and there were no reservations available, but luckily we were able to grab seats at the bar. One thing I really appreciated was how fast the food came out! We had our food in less than 10 minutes, which was impressive, especially for a Saturday night. I ordered the oxtails, which I'd give a 7/10. The flavor was definitely there, but they were a little too fatty for my liking. I also got the Island drink, which I thought was pretty good! My friend ordered the rum punch, and yeah...that tasted nothing like rum punch . Definitely disappointing. I usually get the snapper when I come here, but whew, the price has gotten a little too high for me lol. Overall, still a nice spot with good flavors and super quick service. Quiant little spot. Service was good and very attentive. The hops (rolls) were hot and tasty. The pelau was also very tasty. Did not really taste any 'coconut' in the coconut rice. Sorrel needed more ginger and less cinnamon? Oxtail was tender. Pork belly had a nice taste - perhaps a bit more sauce needed. Jerk wings had a kick to them. Snapper was good for one of our guest and not so good for another, even when it was sent back. It tasted cook but had a a slight red interior that seemed odd. Service was lacking because the restaurant was super busy; we weren't given utensils or water and had to ask a few times. We ordered the eggplant pie starter which was tasty, family-size beef & goat, which came with paratha, potatoes, and chickpeas as well as two sauces (we picked spicy and culantro). Portions were big, flavors were a bit weak - or maybe we should've been given more sauce, I'm not sure. Ambiance was a bit loud and felt crowded. Prices were high although I do appreciate that on their menu, they explicitly write out automatic 20% to give fair wages to workers and says further tipping isn't necessary but optional. Cane, never disappoints! My mom loves coming here specifically for the snapper escovitch, so of course that was a must. We started with two orders of the doubles, followed by the medium snapper with coconut rice, a side of the crispy kale, and chickpeas. Everything was finger licking good! Why does Cane continue to do this?? Consistently deliver delicious food with great service that makes you feel like family! The crispy kale was fantastic and the mango chutney balances a hint of spice. I got the omnivore paratha tiffin box with tomato Choka and I got roti instead of paratha. Fantastic decision! It was good! It has all the core menu items for St. James and seems a little less busy. Which is a good thing! We ordered the bake and salt fish to start and it was great. There was avocado at the top and a mixture of cilantro along with some pepper spices. It was really good and blended well! It was not on the menu, but I got a roti with goat curry and it was great. I ordered Cane for delivery and all i can say : A meal like this calls for a nap right after. So be prepared to feel embraced by a multitude of flavors. The Trini-style beef patty held its crispy exterior it is NOT a Jamaican patty the wrapper is close to an empanada and the inside is bursting with flavor and spices. It was a great introduction to what would follow. The tamarind mayo needed more tamarind I couldn't taste it and will try the culantro sauce the next time. The Jerk wings were smoky, spicy, a little greasy? The was a lot of butter or oil at the bottom and was a so so for me (but to be fair it could be because i was so full from the start of the show). The dish that blew me away was the Oxtail bowl with Pelau (rice and peas) when i tell you the Pelau was so flavorful, spicy, creamy but not wet, it's like it was stewed in a flavor bomb of spices. The pickled peppers were bright, acidic, spicy but addictive. The Oxtail browning sauce was deep in flavor and i wish i had a little more of the gravy for the rice. They could have been stewed a little longer to fall off the bone but the meat was still tender. The best bite came from where the gravy and the rice met. This is a must eat in DC. read more

Had some impressive meals in this Michelin restaurant during my visit to DC. The first time was for lunch. Ordered the Oxtail bowl. By default it came with two pieces of oxtails but that was too much meat for me so I asked for just one piece and more veggies. My server was kind enough to do such modification for me. The oxtail was fork-tender, had lots of collagen, beefy, and had a distinct sourness. The pickled veggies (cucumber slaw & bell peppers) provided a different type of sourness and a hint of heat. Overall very good, though the flavors from the meat and veggies were so strong that I could not have a clear idea of the flavor of the coconut rice. Also, I wish there could be more jus because it went soooooo well with the rice! The second time was for dinner. Tried the Pepperpot, Crispy Kale and Hops. The Pepperpot was a stew of oxtails, cowheels and beef chucks. Very beefy and spicy, a little bit sour/tangy, and very earthy. The sauce was heavenly. It was served with a small bowl of coconut rice and 2 pieces of hops. The rice was a little bit sweet and salty. The hops were similar to dinner rolls, except that they were more dense and firmer. I thought the Crispy Kale was like fried cabbage in soul food but it was literally fried -- so it was very crispy. Too oily for me. I like the mango chutney, though. Service was good and quick. While the restaurant is very small, reservation does not seem to be difficult, especially for lunch. There were, however, lots of online orders. read more

I ordered a few items: Hakka pork ribs with a side of coconut rice Trini beef pies with a side of cilantro (chando beni) sauce Both dishes were AMAZING! Let me break it down so you understand why I love this place. The Hakka pork ribs isn't your typical ribs, it has an authentic level of herbs and spices on it which provided just enough Caribbean flavors. It was topped with picked cucumber and peppers-all of which I ate! To accompany the dish, they added a side of their delicious coconut rice and honestly, that could have been eaten by itself because there is something sweet and savory about it lol I'm serious! I actually eat it without anything several times. They added a sauce for the ribs and I must say that it gave the dish a sprinkle of love. Overall, this was incredible! Next, not pictured, the Trini beef pies reminded me of the pies that I enjoyed in Trinidad. The flavors in the ground beef were nicely contained by a chewy fried dough on the outside. The **Trini Beef Pie** ($9 for just one) was the highlight, reminding me of a well-executed bao bun. The **Shrimp Wontons** were also tasty but incredibly pricey for their minuscule size, and we had to request another serving of the very small dipping sauce serving. The biggest disappointment was the **Trini-Chinese Chicken**. It (similar to everything else) was meagerly portioned, making the pricing hard to justify. While the recipe includes oyster sauce, it was heavily oversalted, leaving the overall flavor profile completely flat and one-dimensional. However, the food issues pale in comparison to a shocking breach of professionalism by our waiter that completely ruined our evening. Mid-conversation, our waiter interrupted us to comment on my girlfriend's physical appearance, telling her she had "such beautiful skin" and proceeded to linger uncomfortably. When I politely interjected to let him know he was interrupting our table, he became hostile and defensive. He claimed that because she smiled while walking past him earlier, it was an "invitation" to initiate this sole engagement with her. When I called him back over to state that this was an unprofessional boundary cross, he refused to apologize. Instead, he pulled up a chair in front of our two-seat table, sat, and spent the next 20 minutes aggressively arguing and lecturing us. We were effectively cornered and trapped at our own table for longer than it took us to eat our meal. This restaurant is severely overpricing its small portions, but more importantly, its staff is utterly incapable of reading a room or respecting basic boundaries. Avoid this place if you value a comfortable, respectful dining experience. ***UPDATE AS OF 9/28*** I've since reached out to Cane Management and have received noticeably AI-generated responses (the first was argumentative). Wow I'm so glad my friend's and I plans changed. We originally were supposed to go somewhere else but they closed early. So we arrived here on a whim and they did not disappoint! Had lunch with an old childhood friend and the place has a great location on H Street. The food on the lunch menu is nicely portioned. I had the Trini-Chinese Chicken bowl with their Trini-Style Eggplant pie. The sauce that comes with the eggplant pie is a great match but beware! It has a spicy kick! My friend had the Curried Chicken Bowl he said it was good. Our server was attentive and was ready to answer questions about the dishes since this was a first time visit. My first review of the month! Automatic 5 stars because I took my brother here for lunch and he LOVED it, both the food and the vibe (great music and service!) The Trinidadian beef pie was delicious, and served very hot, which is the best and only way to truly enjoy savory pastries. The dhalpuri roti wrap with chicken and potatoes was excellent, so packed that the filling was literally bursting out of the dhalpuri and SO GOOD. The sorrel beverage was a little sweeter than I expected, but still very refreshing and good. Cane is in a cozy space with a modern minimalist vibe, and being just a few blocks from Union station makes it very easily accessible. I would definitely recommend making a reservation since it can fill up quickly. Luckily, when we got there, we had the place to ourselves which is always a plus! I really wanted to like it here, but this is just another Carribean restaurant that isn't authentic because they add cilantro to everything. I've visited many parts of the Caribbean and have never had cilantro on my food. **And as someone allergic to cilantro, you need to list it as an ingredient on your menu to prevent serious issues. Miami does not explore the vast variety of Trinidadian cuisine. It was nice to see roti, curry, pelau, stews, calalloo, and so much more on the menu! I was excited to try the food. We slipped in right before the kitchen closed and they were welcoming and gracious enough to seat us. It was smaller than I expected but very cozy and the service was attentive and fast. We food was amazing! Really upscale Trini fusion food and we ate until we were full and satisfied. The other part... We should have came in earlier because unfortunately we spent the rest of the night with food poisoning. Maybe there was a food handling snafu at the end of the evening. Food was aaaaaaamazing 3 star because the service was terrible. They charge 20% service fee which is probably why they don't care to serve you. My drink came when i finished the appetizer and almost finished my entree. Then after i finished the food, i had to ask 3 times and wait 40 minutes to get the check.
