The food here is really good. I've visited a few times, and the jerk wings and coconut rice are always a staple for me, and I love the dipping sauce that comes with the wings. This time decided to try some new items, including the shrimp wontons, the snapper, and the ribs. Loved the ribs. Felt the snapper was a good portion size and fried well, but could have packed more flavor. And also felt the shrimp wontons were just okay, could have also packed more flavor. I might go back to my old faithful, the oxtails, next time, or get the ribs again! Service could be improved. The waiter forgot to check in on us a few times, and was delayed refilling drinks. I didn't have my meal selection ready by the time as my other guests, so they agreed to come back and give me a bit more time. Had some impressive meals in this Michelin restaurant during my visit to DC. The first time was for lunch. Ordered the Oxtail bowl. By default it came with two pieces of oxtails but that was too much meat for me so I asked for just one piece and more veggies. My server was kind enough to do such modification for me. The oxtail was fork-tender, had lots of collagen, beefy, and had a distinct sourness. The pickled veggies (cucumber slaw & bell peppers) provided a different type of sourness and a hint of heat. Overall very good, though the flavors from the meat and veggies were so strong that I could not have a clear idea of the flavor of the coconut rice. Also, I wish there could be more jus because it went soooooo well with the rice! The second time was for dinner. Tried the Pepperpot, Crispy Kale and Hops. The Pepperpot was a stew of oxtails, cowheels and beef chucks. Very beefy and spicy, a little bit sour/tangy, and very earthy. The sauce was heavenly. It was served with a small bowl of coconut rice and 2 pieces of hops. The rice was a little bit sweet and salty. The hops were similar to dinner rolls, except that they were more dense and firmer. I thought the Crispy Kale was like fried cabbage in soul food but it was literally fried -- so it was very crispy. Too oily for me. I like the mango chutney, though. Service was good and quick. The Hakka pork ribs isn't your typical ribs, it has an authentic level of herbs and spices on it which provided just enough Caribbean flavors. It was topped with picked cucumber and peppers-all of which I ate! Had lunch with an old childhood friend and the place has a great location on H Street. The food on the lunch menu is nicely portioned. I had the Trini-Chinese Chicken bowl with their Trini-Style Eggplant pie. The sauce that comes with the eggplant pie is a great match but beware! It has a spicy kick! My friend had the Curried Chicken Bowl he said it was good. Our server was attentive and was ready to answer questions about the dishes since this was a first time visit. The Trinidadian beef pie was delicious, and served very hot, which is the best and only way to truly enjoy savory pastries. The dhalpuri roti wrap with chicken and potatoes was excellent, so packed that the filling was literally bursting out of the dhalpuri and SO GOOD. The sorrel beverage was a little sweeter than I expected, but still very refreshing and good. I would definitely recommend making a reservation since it can fill up quickly. Luckily, when we got there, we had the place to ourselves which is always a plus! I've visited many parts of the Caribbean and have never had cilantro on my food. **And as someone allergic to cilantro, you need to list it as an ingredient on your menu to prevent serious issues. We slipped in right before the kitchen closed and they were welcoming and gracious enough to seat us. It was smaller than I expected but very cozy and the service was attentive and fast. I really wanted to love this place. As someone from the Caribbean, I came to Cane with high hopes and an empty stomach. I left with low expectations and a full plate of regret. I've been a few times now trying to give it a fair shot, but Cane keeps proving that vibes alone can't carry a restaurant. What really surprises me is all the glowing reviews. The cuisine is more Trinidadian inspired, which put a small spin on the traditional Caribbean cuisines I'm used to. We ordered jerk wings and hops for starters. It was pretty small inside so not ideal for super big parties, but the vibes made you feel like you're at home. They played Caribbean music on the background and our server was very polite. I can't remember the name of the items I ordered but my drink was the house sorrel and I really enjoyed it! For my meal, I think it was called the potsucker which consisted of oxtails, brisket, and beef tendon served with rolls and coconut rice. I honestly was a bit disappointed. The pot was filled mainly with the tendons and very little oxtail/ brisket. There also wasn't enough sauce to fully enjoy over the rice so I mostly had plain rice and the coconut was not very prominent in the rice to me. I also ordered the smoked jerk wings which was slightly underwhelming to me as well. I expected it to be a tad bit more tender. My date enjoyed how food and I believe he got curry chicken and roti. I don't live in the DMV area so I'm not sure if this is a normal thing or not but there was a "20% Fare Wage" added to our total which is supposed to help with the wages of the staff but is NOT a tip. That's honestly a huge turn off to me because it's asking customers to help with the wages of the employees which to me would mean a tip is not necessarily required. Don't waste your time and money at CANE's. While is Washington over the weekend (Memorial Day Holiday) I looked everywhere for a West Indian restaurant with Roti. Cane came up as the only Trini resturant with Roti that was open on Sunday evening. We decided to drive 40 minutes to go eat there. What a huge disappointment it was. I ordered the Paratha Roti and my girlfriend ordered the Oxtail and my 12 year old son ordered the jerk wings. The oxtail came with 3 pieces that they somehow manage to ruin good oxtail the way it was prepared and served on a long tin platter. It tasted awful like it was boiled till it was soft then they add some kind of powered seasoning with some peppers and then baked. I never knew you could actually ruin oxtails. Then the paratha roti, curry potato and chana, and curry goat came is separate small tin vessels. They have these little bread and butter plates on the table and expect you eat your meal from it. I asked for a regular plate and they did not have one. They brought me this green plate that was about an inch larger than the bread and butter plate on the table. I decide that I would suck it up and just make do. First, the Roti was Oil Roti like they make in Guyana, not Paratha/Bussupshut like the menu reads. Second, the amount of salt in the food was so ridiculous, I could not eat much of it there. I literally drank an entire bottle of the rum bottle water by myself before I could eat half of the food. I tried one piece of the 3 very small pieces of goat in the container but it was all bone. The massala in the curry goat was so overwhelming, I could not eat it and decide to take it home. I told myself that other 2 pieces of goat would be all meat beacuse there is an expectation of a piece being bone when ordering goat. I got home and later into the night I decided to try some more. The other 2 pieces of goat were just big bones covered with the massala. How horrible was that. The jerk was 6 very small single pieces like 3 flats and 3 drumetts and he was not satisfied with thet taste. They charge 20 percent on top of your bill for backend and kitchen staff automatically and then you still have to tip apart from that. A half of tea spoon of one of the chutneys and pepper sauce are $3 each, which condiments are free with food everywhere. I even had to ask for a spoon to dip out the food from the tin cans to put on my little plate to eat. The food did not taste like trini food and just a lot of salt. Would never eat there and would not recommend it at all. I get all the tin can look they were going for, but trini food should be served on a white plate so you can see the beauty of the food. But then again, it tasted awaful, so I guess it does not matter. Very small portions for your money. So dissappointed. 3 little pieces of goat that was all bones covered with massala? HORRIBLE. If you went to a regular roti shop anywhere, you would get three time the amount of goat, potato, chana and everything else including condiments for $18 to $20. Roti was $32 and the Oxtail was $34. A coworker had suggested the Curried Shrimp from Cane and so I ordered for delivery to my job. The pricing of the dish and portion felt disproportionate but only by a little. The portion of shrimp was great, but I would've have liked more rice to finish up the curry. I found the flavor and spice to be remarkable, well balanced seasonings and just such an impactful flavor. The foood is bomb!!!! I usually accept the fact that food will taste less yummy if I order it for delivery cuz it won't be as fresh. However, today the dhalpuri roti (beef) and jerk wings tasted amazing!!!!!!! It is spicy for sure and I love the spice! I did wish I ordered chicken for the Roti instead of beef because beef short ribs meat isn't my favorite parts of beef in general but the seasoning was perfect!!!!!!! I would love to try other stuff on the menu and for sure visit in person! read more
