If you're craving authentic oxtail I would not recommend cane. The snapper looked great, maybe I'll return to try that but I'm also a bit hesitant it will be garnished but flavorless like the oxtail. We've only done delivery from Cane and gone to St James in person a few times (higher end sister restaurant) and the delivery is perfection every time. I *hate* super sweet jerk seasoning and these wings had just the perfect amount of acid to balance the flavors. Plus, the skin was falling off the bone. Both the Trini eggplant and beef patties were well seasoned and tasty. Doubles were perfect. Hibiscus cocktail is a MUST! My only reservation in giving five stars is the oxtail dinner. This was my second time having Cane but first time ordering delivery. Everything arrived warm and packed well. I knew I had to order the jerk wings, because they were so flavorful and tender the last time I had them. Plantains are a must-order for me, but I was conflicted about the rest of my order. I ended up getting the personal omnivore entree for the sheer variety and opted for chicken curry along with potato and channa curries. They're served with roti, but I wish I had gotten a side of coconut rice. I'm usually not a big dipping sauce person but their habanero sauce and tamarind sauces were both AMAZING. After searching for a high-quality dining experience in DC, we landed on Cane--a Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant. As Caribbean natives, we were excited to see a Caribbean spot earn that recognition, especially after several days in DC craving food with real flavor. We had read mixed reviews ahead of time, with common complaints about portion sizes and a lack of authentic seasoning. We were also a bit wary of the automatic 20% front-of-house service charge added to the bill. Still, we decided to give it a try. The space itself is cozy and inviting--definitely has that modern "hole-in-the-wall" charm with a good vibe. Starters: We ordered the Geera Pork Belly, Jerk Chicken Wings, and Chinese 5-Spice Chicken. All three dishes were well-cooked and tender, but none delivered the bold, layered flavors we expected from true Caribbean food. The spices were muted, and the dishes lacked the punch and depth you usually find back home. Mains: We had the Escovitch Fish and Paratha. The fish was seasoned, but it didn't come close to what you'd expect from escovitch--no vinegar tang, no pickled pepper zest, none of that signature zing. The paratha also missed the mark entirely; it didn't resemble traditional paratha in texture or flavor. Drinks & Dessert: The Trinidad Rum Sour was far too bitter and unbalanced. The portion sizes and lack of authentic flavor just don't justify the high cost--especially the escovitch, which felt like the worst value of the night. A small and cozy restaurant on historic H street serving up some delightful food! The servers are very kind, and the place is quite intimate. I ate alone, so I only had the chance to try the pepper pot and coconut cream flan. The pepper pot was so delicious, and the meats were all tender and fall-off-the-bone. Eaten with the coconut rice, this dish is so comforting and honestly what I needed after a long day. I was full halfway through this meal but I persevered to eat the flan. It felt so big for $8, but it was such a delight to eat. The coconut was not too strong, and the dessert as a whole was tame, wrapping up the meal perfectly. I have not physically been here since before the pandemic. I've missed it so much! They started a new ordering process to where a customer now scans a QR code at the assigned dinner table, then orders with their phone. The whole process was pretty amazing. The small staff- hostess (beautiful and friendly), bartender, and waiter were all very attentive. I ordered the carnivore meal as well as the must have jerk wings and cabbage. For drinks, I had Cane fever which was excellent! The food never fails to bring me joy- everything tasted amazing. There was no room for dessert. I visited Cane yesterday and ordered the shrimp omnivore dish. Unfortunately, shortly after eating, I experienced intense food poisoning; so severe that I projectile vomited everything I had eaten. I ordered from Canes today and I have in the past as well but wanted to try out their new Dhalpuri Roti with Beef. I would say as a Trini I was not impressed by it because of the fact that I received a soggy roti skin and the beef/curry sauce was extremely salty. The currant roll however was really good and I loved the butter that they sent with it. Ideally I've tried other options as well such as the Pelau and I loved that. I really wanted to try their saltfish with bake but if there's a trend of the food being salty I'm nervous to try the salt fish that's already salty naturally. read more

My coworker and I came out to check this place out since I have been trying to get here forever and a day! It was a bit difficult to find but look up and look for the sign. We decided to try out this restaurant because of their Caribbean and West Indian inspired food options. The ambiance and overall vibe of this establishment was definitely fun. However, this was the only positive thing about this place. To make a long story short, the service was non-existent and the food left much to be desired. How is it that our party of 2 was the very first to be seated, but we had to literally flag our waitress down to finally place our order when we realized that all the parties who came after us seemed to have plates of food in front of them. Keep in mind, they automatically add on a 20% service charge to your entire bill if you dine in. This is criminal because what they offered in the name of service was abysmal. The waitresses seemed to be entirely disinterested in being there and the guests seemed to be incoveniencing them. The food we ordered was lack-luster. We ordered the Herbivore Tiffin meal that comes with tomato chokha, baingan chokha, channa-potato curry and a roti/paratha. The eggplant dish (baingan chokha) was terrible. It tasted like boiled eggplant. The West-Indian dishes I have had the pleasure of having are vibrant dishes with depth and complexity. This food paled in comparison. Maybe their meat dishes are better, but that doesn't mean you should ignore the quality of your vegetarian offerings. As avid restaurant goers, we usually like to tip way above the recommended 20% tip. But we were highly dissapointed with our experience and decision to come here. While we were leaving, the man with the dread-locks perhaps sensed the lack of professionalism with which we were treated with and happened to say, "Thank you for your patience". My rating for this spot is a 3.8 but I have a 4 because I'm not sure how to do the 3.8. The inside is very small so if you plan to go for happy hour or to dine in get there early. We went for lunch for my birthday and it was myself, wife and another lady who was really nice. The gentleman greeted us with a smile and made us delicious drinks. I was so happy to finally have a chance to eat at Cane! I have been looking at their food for months now. It was date night and I chose came because we both like West Indian food. We ordered doubles, jerk wings, crispy kale, omnivore paratha tiffin box with curry chicken along with red stripe and their hibiscus drinks. I really wanted to try the oxtail but since we were headed out afterwards, knew I wouldn't finish and wouldn't have anywhere to stash the leftovers. The curry also lacked depth of flavor. I was really looking forward to having food that was better than what my stepfather, a Trini himself makes. They had a consistency of the curry sauce correct whereas my stepfather's is more grainy however his has different flavor notes that gives it depth compared to canes which was really flat.
