My uncle was a founding father of this establishment and after a recent visit on the day of his memorial, we decided to make this our watering hole. The hitching post has quickly become my neighborhood go to, the atmosphere is great, the staff are kind and attentive. I enjoy the Catfish plus the cornbread, collard greens, mac n cheese and fries are all solid. Carrot cake is good! The lemonade is made fresh and delicious. I've been here with a large party of 16 people and had a great time but have also been here on a date sat at the bar enjoying the vibes and a few drinks with dinner. When i worked over in this neighborhood i used to eat here at least once a week. I was in NE and wanted some food from here. Does not matter how long it has been the chicken is always the best! Very underwhelming food and service. It was fairly empty on Sunday afternoon around 4pm. The bartender was also the server. She was trying her best but fell short. Our margaritas were served in a tall glass and not good. I asked for a sugar rim and we got no rim. The branzino sold out right as I ordered it so I settled for the seafood curry. It was not a good choice. 2 jumbo shrimp and pieces of catfish with bland rice and bland steamed cabbage for almost $30. I asked for the check multiple times but the bartender made us wait until she was done making multiple drinks. Never offered dessert. My mom did not like her pork chops and dressed them up when she got home. i'm 69 y/o and have never been in an eatery stateside which charges $5.00 for a 12 oz glass of sweetened ice tea which with the ice nets 6-8 ounces of actual tea AND then refuses just A single free refill. I looked at some drink profit margin calculators and even premium teas cost operators 2.70-3.00 for a 3 gallon batch to make costing 5-6 cents per 16oz serving . the rest of that 5.00 charge to customers WITH NO REFILL is profit to the establishment. My lunch partner also got no refill on his diet coke which admittingly cost more than the tea to provide and costing 4.00 at this establishment so again , no refills so humongous profit for the Hitching Post. I expect the same setup for coffee. I've personally just never been anywhere where tea, coffee and sodas were not refilled even once except for can or bottle products. I thought every thing on the menu was overpriced for the market in this area. read more

there was a time in yester year when this place had GREAT food. A kinda of neighborhood, family owned meeting spot. I was excited to try it again with my family in tow. Quite possibly one of the worst meals I've had in a long long while, and still pretty darn expensive to boot. fried chicken. while it looked good, was clearly frozen and quickly thawed for cooking. the skin was pretty tasty but simply a blanket for mostly freezer burned and thus hard and dry meat. Let's talk about the $10 sides. Mac and cheese that tasted more like bland buttered noodles void of cheese. I was excited about the potato salad but to my dismay it's grossly sweet! who does that?! The pinch of sugar would do well in the bitter collard greens. Lastly, the fried chicken dinners average about $25 a piece for carry out. Now i'm a foodie and would hardly complain if it weren't so incredibly disgusting. . Sorry. i'm all for neighborhood, family owned businesses that unite communities, but the sweet little old couple that has run this place for years needs to retire. Good food, reasonable prices, comfortable, homey environment, and great staff! I eat there regularly and also bring visiting family and friends. I haven't tried everything on the menu, but the options I've tried are well prepared, and portions are still good, although somewhat scaled down in size. I wish they were lighter on the sugar in the potato salad and cornbread, but that's a personal preference. I'll continue coming back. read more

This is a wonderful little local spot, with delicious food and wonderful service. Came for the fried whole fish and fried chicken and we were not disappointed. The fried fish was perfectly battered, fresh and very tasty. Fried wings were juicy and delicious. Kiddo also ordered the burger , and it came in great size, she couldn't finish most of it. This is a truly nice "family restaurant". The food quality was impressive and superb. Very crisp fried chicken, catfish and no kidding perhaps the best collard greens I'd ever had (also vegan)- spiced and neither overcooked nor bitter. I grew up in the deepest of the deep south and while the style of cooking the chicken, catfish, and collards is not the same as Mississippi, I'd say the food quality was as good if not better than any place I've been back home. Bread pudding and cornbread were fresh out of the oven. I took a peek in the kitchen, it was small and sparkling clean. It was Memorial Day and my friends and I were desperate for soul food. We are from the East coast so we are very picky about how our soul food is made and even more so, how it tastes. So many places were closed but Hitching Post was open till 5pm so we drove down from Silver Springs to check them out. We got seated outside and scanned their menu, as well as the happy hour menu, since it was happy hour all day. I immediately knew what I wanted but noticed they didn't have candied yams. I asked the waitress why that was, and she noted that they make all their food fresh and would rather not use canned candied yams. Apparently making candied yams from scratch takes long so they didn't deem it necessary to have on the menu. With that aside, I got the fried catfish, mac & cheese and broccoli. The food took a bit to come out but our drinks came out quickly. We all got the rum punch and had to ask for an extra shot because the drinks were weak (as expected bc they were on the happy hour menu). Our food came and much to my surprise, the mac & cheese was NOT good. Like it was probably one of the worst I've ever tasted. Our waitress, although begrudgingly, swapped it out for us and replaced it with the mashed potatoes. Overall, the food was decent but the service was poor. Our waitress had such an off-outing demeanor and it impacted the experience. Won't be returning. read more

This DC fixture is a real treat! I was at a real disadvantage since I have celiac, but I still enjoyed a wonderful meal. We were a large table, including a 5 y.o. and 2 y.o. Our servers couldn't have been more accommodating! In fact, one of the women suggested that we order for the kids while we perused the menu. This was truly helpful! Obviously, anyone who CAN eat fried chicken, waffles, and biscuits SHOULD do that here. My table mates raved over all! The crab cakes, according to my husband, were the best he's ever eaten. This place is a hidden gem Tucktaway in a DC neighborhood. While driving, I actually pass the spot so you have to be very vigilant to see it on the corner. The food reminded me of a southern Alabama meal. The food is cooked to order and they tell you upfront and on the me that it could possibly take 20 to 30 minutes to receive your food. The staff and the assistant wait staff were very helpful and kind. Officially my new go-to happy hour spot. Great happy hour prices, great food, and cozy atmosphere. They treat you like family here at the Hitching Post. I got 3 jumbo fried chicken wings for $7 & a nice presented old fashioned for $7 as well. I ordered a side salad for around $5 and greens for around $5 as well. I throughly enjoyed my happy hour experience and the staff were so friendly. The manager of the restaurant even hung out with us. Will be back soon! read more

Wasn't finished cooking... still had that wet slimy texture instead of a flake. The mac n cheese was congealed into a ball and was extremely bland. The cheesy factor was missing, no gooey no nothing. I traded in my blackened catfish for fried catfish. Although it was better, still not a plate I'd order again. They serve this creamy, tartar-ish type sauce on the plate. Now that was fire! Elevated the flavor of my fried fish! Swapped out the mac n cheese for mashed potatoes. I did sample their crab cake and that was simply delicious! Had a slight kick and flaked off evenly due to the same sized crab pieces and shreds throughout that crabby patty! read more

I was pleasantly surprised by this spot. Because they have more of a bar vibe, I didn't expect the food to be as great as it was. However their chicken did come highly recommended by a friend. I don't eat chicken so I wasn't able to order that, but I got the shrimp curry and wow! It was phenomenal. I was dining alone and was on the phone with a friend for a part of the time, and even she commented on how great the service here was. The environment is so kind and welcoming and the staff truly adheres to that kindness and environment. The only downside for me was the fact that there were no vegan desserts. Not even fruit! So when the owner offered me dessert I wasn't even able to have anything. That was very disappointing. However, he assured me that dairy free desserts will be implemented into the menu.
