When i worked over in this neighborhood i used to eat here at least once a week. I was in NE and wanted some food from here. Does not matter how long it has been the chicken is always the best! Very underwhelming food and service. It was fairly empty on Sunday afternoon around 4pm. The bartender was also the server. She was trying her best but fell short. Our margaritas were served in a tall glass and not good. I asked for a sugar rim and we got no rim. The branzino sold out right as I ordered it so I settled for the seafood curry. It was not a good choice. 2 jumbo shrimp and pieces of catfish with bland rice and bland steamed cabbage for almost $30. Quite possibly one of the worst meals I've had in a long long while, and still pretty darn expensive to boot. fried chicken. while it looked good, was clearly frozen and quickly thawed for cooking. the skin was pretty tasty but simply a blanket for mostly freezer burned and thus hard and dry meat. Let's talk about the $10 sides. Mac and cheese that tasted more like bland buttered noodles void of cheese. I was excited about the potato salad but to my dismay it's grossly sweet! who does that?! This is a wonderful little local spot, with delicious food and wonderful service. Came for the fried whole fish and fried chicken and we were not disappointed. The fried fish was perfectly battered, fresh and very tasty. Fried wings were juicy and delicious. Kiddo also ordered the burger , and it came in great size, she couldn't finish most of it. Very crisp fried chicken, catfish and no kidding perhaps the best collard greens I'd ever had (also vegan)- spiced and neither overcooked nor bitter. I grew up in the deepest of the deep south and while the style of cooking the chicken, catfish, and collards is not the same as Mississippi, I'd say the food quality was as good if not better than any place I've been back home. This DC fixture is a real treat! I was at a real disadvantage since I have celiac, but I still enjoyed a wonderful meal. We were a large table, including a 5 y.o. and 2 y.o. Our servers couldn't have been more accommodating! In fact, one of the women suggested that we order for the kids while we perused the menu. This was truly helpful! Obviously, anyone who CAN eat fried chicken, waffles, and biscuits SHOULD do that here. My table mates raved over all! The crab cakes, according to my husband, were the best he's ever eaten. It was Memorial Day and my friends and I were desperate for soul food. We are from the East coast so we are very picky about how our soul food is made and even more so, how it tastes. So many places were closed but Hitching Post was open till 5pm so we drove down from Silver Springs to check them out. We got seated outside and scanned their menu, as well as the happy hour menu, since it was happy hour all day. I immediately knew what I wanted but noticed they didn't have candied yams. I asked the waitress why that was, and she noted that they make all their food fresh and would rather not use canned candied yams. Apparently making candied yams from scratch takes long so they didn't deem it necessary to have on the menu. With that aside, I got the fried catfish, mac & cheese and broccoli. The food took a bit to come out but our drinks came out quickly. We all got the rum punch and had to ask for an extra shot because the drinks were weak (as expected bc they were on the happy hour menu). Our food came and much to my surprise, the mac & cheese was NOT good. Like it was probably one of the worst I've ever tasted. Our waitress, although begrudgingly, swapped it out for us and replaced it with the mashed potatoes. Overall, the food was decent but the service was poor. Officially my new go-to happy hour spot. Great happy hour prices, great food, and cozy atmosphere. They treat you like family here at the Hitching Post. I got 3 jumbo fried chicken wings for $7 & a nice presented old fashioned for $7 as well. I ordered a side salad for around $5 and greens for around $5 as well. Wasn't finished cooking... still had that wet slimy texture instead of a flake. The mac n cheese was congealed into a ball and was extremely bland. The cheesy factor was missing, no gooey no nothing. I traded in my blackened catfish for fried catfish. Although it was better, still not a plate I'd order again. They serve this creamy, tartar-ish type sauce on the plate. Now that was fire! Elevated the flavor of my fried fish! Swapped out the mac n cheese for mashed potatoes. I did sample their crab cake and that was simply delicious! I was pleasantly surprised by this spot. Because they have more of a bar vibe, I didn't expect the food to be as great as it was. However their chicken did come highly recommended by a friend. I was dining alone and was on the phone with a friend for a part of the time, and even she commented on how great the service here was. The environment is so kind and welcoming and the staff truly adheres to that kindness and environment. The only downside for me was the fact that there were no vegan desserts. Not even fruit! So when the owner offered me dessert I wasn't even able to have anything. That was very disappointing. However, he assured me that dairy free desserts will be implemented into the menu. Be prepared for some of the best fried chicken of your life. Was recommended by a friend and boy is the chicken juicy, tender, skin perfectly and lightly crispy. This spot is waaaay overrated. I came here upon the glowing recommendations of several neighbors, who said that this was the best place for fried chicken in the city. It absolutely is not!!!! I got the 5-wing entree with fries, and I was really disappointed with this entire meal. Let's start with the chicken. First of all, the wings were HUGE. You know what chicken looks like it when it's just abnormally large -- like it was pumped full of hormones and steroids and what not on the factory farm?!?! Well that's exactly what these wings look like. They were way too big, and while appearing to be fried perfectly -- weren't actually that tasty. There was a layer of too much fat just under the skin. And the meat (and apparently the batter itself) just didn't have much taste. As for the fries -- which were more like potato-ey steak frites than "fries fries" -- those were just ok. Nothing to write home about. Could have used a tad more salt. But they were "ok" overall. Also the side of greens was unremarkable. Not bad -- but just unremarkable. They certainly were not befitting of the flavor of a true soul food restaurant. So all in all, I felt like this meal was 0 for 3 and just a huge waste of money. Additionally, I picked up the order instead of paying extra to have it delivered. But I didn't like how the front door of the building requires you to go through a small seating area (basically where they closed in the front porch to facilitate outdoor dining), which was chock FULL of way too many people sitting in a small, enclosed place in very close proximity to one another -- all maskless, talking, and eating. It was shockingly terrible! Honestly, it seemed like a recipe for COVID transmission. I have no idea why patrons are putting themselves at risk like that, and I feel sorry for the wait staff that has to work in that small area. It was definitely not a socially-distanced eating situation. I literally held my breath as I made a beeline through the small room of ~20 people all seated in the area in front fo the door, which is off to the far right side of the porch. All in all, this was my first -- and last -- visit to Hitching Post. There's far better chicken, fries, and collards at Oohs and Aahs, and for a fraction of the price. I've been to this restaurant twice now and will definitely never be going back. The food is okay - passable as a restaurant. The big draw is that someone else cooks it for you, but it is very much grocery store level food upcharged for convenience. The service is reliably terrible. Do not come here unless you have a couple of extra hours to spend waiting for your food, attempting to flag a waiter for a drink refill, or to ask again if the kitchen is indeed working on your order and might have it out to you some time that same night. Unfortunately the ambiance leaves much to be desired as well. If you're stuck sitting outside you'll be surrounded by plastic accordion walls that block the nice evening breeze and view and will then have your eyes assaulted by the ever-blinking and color changing lights shining down upon your table as if you were in the middle of a rave. I can't find any reason to recommend this restaurant, unless you enjoy mediocre food delivered to you (maybe) as slowly as possible. They'll definitely forget to bring something you ordered and will likely never check in with you again after initially placing your order unless you make it your mission to get their attention. It's easier to just cook at home, even if you are bad at cooking or hate cooking. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else or just eat at home. read more
