I came to Chicken & Whiskey twice in two days, once on purpose and once by chance. Both times were after events, and I was so happy to have something casual but delicious that was still open on 14th. I had the chicken tenders with red sauce included. The first time, I had mac n' cheese as my side. The second I opted for no side. The chicken tenders are hot, crispy, and deliciously seasoned! Color me surprised when I've visited this place expecting chicken and whiskey; and while I got those things, I was pleasantly surprised by the Peruvian flair and cuisine. I was in town for homecoming and decided to take in a local eatery as 14th St. used to be one of the spots where fun would happen. I was pleased to see all of the new restaurants and bars that are in the area. I stopped in here as it looked lively, and I wasn't disappointed. The chicken was well flavored and juicy two things that I really appreciate. And I loved that there was a secret speakeasy type bar in the back that served amazing whiskeys. Both the servers and the bartender in the back were super dope and kind to me and I held great conversations with them. New to the area I found Chicken +Whiskey on a food delivery app. I love Peruvian food so I had to give them a try. I ordered the half chicken dark, half bean & rice and sweet plantains. I also ordered a Inka Kola. At first glance I was surprised at the portion. There were two pieces of chicken on a bed of 1/3 c of rice. I was like this can't be all the rice. Then when I looked in the bag the bowl with beans also had rice in it. Odd packaging but I guess altogether it was about a cup of rice. Then the sweet plantains were packaged separately. The chicken was way too salty and the rice and beans had no salt. The sweet plantains were not completely cooked. I was saddened because Peruvian food is always a hit for me and with the high ratings I expected good things. Perhaps it was an off night. There were no utensils in the bag which to me was a missed opportunity to make a good impression. Considering the food was being delivered to a hotel and folks usually need utensils away from home. This is our go to spot for casual dining with a group of friends. We often go here for dinner and get their combo meal. It used to be $50 but they have increased the price to $60. This place is the epitome of a mullet - business in the front and party in the back. I dropped by Chicken + Whiskey on a early Saturday evening to meet a few acquaintances. While visiting the boy's room, I noticed a bar in the back of the restaurant. Clearly, I missed the big sign on the wall in the restaurant saying "Whiskey in the back". ;) Since I arrived a bit early for my meetup, I decided to check out the bar...Also, I was quite excited to have an adult beverage while waiting for my acquaintances. I'll say that I loved both the chicken and whiskey components of Chicken + Whiskey. I think this is the perfect business model, because you can party in the bar and grab a bite to eat before or afterwards. Whiskey: The bar component has a MASSIVE selection of whiskey options, which is to be expected from the + Whiskey. Also, it has a nice mix of various cocktails, so I think everyone can find something that they will like. For my tasting pleasure, I went with "I can buy myself flowers" (of course I ordered it how Miley Cyrus sings it) and a standard Manhattan on the rocks. Both drinks were delicious although gin-based beverage (I can buy myself flowers) was a bit too sweet for my liking. My bartender (a woman with brownish/reddish hair) was absolutely amazing. Chicken: The restaurant component is a typical Peruvian rotisserie chicken operation with plenty of chicken and side options. For my meal, I went with 1/4 white chicken with two sides (mac n queso and fried rice). The chicken was very delicious with oh so juicy meat. The mac n queso was just ok, but the fried rice (arroz chufa) was amazing especially with the bits of bacon mixed in. The meal was about $14, which I thought was reasonable. Since I did not get enough gin and whiskey from the whiskey bar, I decided to wash my meal down with a can of a hazy IPA. The can of beer was $9, which I thought was a little pricey. But, it is what it is, I guess. Overall, I definitely will love to visit Chicken + Whiskey again, especially the Whiskey part, because I really would like to try more of their cocktails. One note: While you can take your beverages from the Whiskey part to the Chicken part, it is HIGHLY recommended (actually, it might be a rule) that you do not bring food from the Chicken part to the Whiskey part. After going to a concert in the neighborhood, we were looking for some food to fill our bellies. After checking out a few eateries, we settled on Chicken and Whisky, a Peruvian place, as the roast chicken looked really inviting. The first impression was good. The shop was decorated with bright colors and an open kitchen. All of the staff were young men who were in good spirits and very friendly. We shared the 1/2 chicken with two sides combo and selected the Yuca fries and sweet plantains. We also shared a can of Brazliian Guarana-flavored soda. My husband also tried a pork belly arepa. We must have been hungry because we devoured the food in just a few minutes. That's how good everything was. The chicken was roasted to perfection, even the breast was tender and juicy. The yuca fries were big and crispy and the plantains were nice and charred, but not overly sweet. Needlessly to say we were very impressed with the food and wish we have a Chicken and Whisky near home. My driver waited a lengthy period of time for food here and decided to cancel on me and leave. Their chicken empanadas with the aji amarillo sauce are just so good - generously filled, flavorful, full of tender chicken with sauce and veggies, warm and with perfectly fried dough. I've had so many empanadas lately that were bad or just okay (burnt, dry, bland, etc.) that I'm so happy to have tried these! I've had their fried arepas before, which are so decadent and filling (my favorite is the one stuffed with chicken and plantains) - the absolute perfect drunk food for me! The only thing I've not enjoyed here was a side of plantains, which were kind of tough/not a great texture. I haven't ordered them again, but the ones in my arepas haven't been like that, so it's possible I just got an old/off batch that one time. The restaurant is tiny and you're better off taking your order to go in my experience, but this is my comfort food spot for when I just want delicious fried food. I really need to try their drinks soon! I can vouch for the chicken but not yet the whiskey. I've always found the service quick and helpful, but I'm also usually there at odd times, and I know they can get crowded in the evening. Finding parking around here can be a bit tricky, especially during peak hours, but it's worth the effort for a taste of their food. They have a fun little outside counter for a quick bite, or you can dine inside, where there's several tables (and even a speakeasy in the back bumping Latin beats). I opted for takeout and ordered the 1/2 Chicken Dark with Yuca Fries ($15 for the chicken and one side, $16 for two sides), which turned out to be a delightful choice despite a few hiccups in the process. When I arrived to pick up my order, there was a bit of a delay--about five minutes as they located my meal. To add to the minor inconvenience, they initially forgot to include the fries and one of the sauces I requested (Aji Amarillo). However, the staff quickly rectified this, packing the fries in a small bag and offering a sincere apology for the oversight. Now, let's talk about the food itself. The website boasts that they "brine chicken for 12 hours in a uniquely flavorful recipe, then slow roast them to perfection at 1000°F, over natural wood charcoal." The 1/2 Chicken Dark was moist, juicy, and packed with flavor, hitting all the right notes in terms of seasoning and tenderness. It came with two sizable chicken quarters (thigh and drumstick), and it was simply seasoned, but the quality of the chicken was great. I visited Chicken + Whiskey for the first time recently after hearing great things about it for years. I don't know why it's taken me this long to visit. The 14th St location has a fast casual chicken spot in the front and a "hidden" whiskey bar in the back, behind a commercial freezer door. I visited for happy hour on a Friday at 5 PM and we were the first people there. We enjoyed the cocktails and food, especially with the happy hour discount. Happy hour runs Mon-Fri, 5-7 PM and includes $2 off all beers and arepas, $3 off all cocktails and sanguiches/wraps, $9 pisco punch, and $15 beer + wings combo. We had the Pisco Punch, Squash It, and Sweater Weather cocktails which were all tasty and $9/$10 on happy hour. We got the wings and beer combo and the Borracho Wrap, recommended by the bartender. The wings were good if a little dry, and actually came with all 3 sauces on the side. The wrap ($10.25 on HH) was excellent, the perfect balance of textures and flavors. Very impressed. Service was quick and friendly. Overall, we had good experience, but there are a couple opportunities to improve. The cocktails were clearly fall cocktails and out of season now that it's April. The beer + wings combo was a bit disappointing because it was only for the Tecate beer (not any beer). The 3.75% surcharge is also unwelcome. Finally, for a first timer, the food/drinks situation was a little confusing. Before visiting, we thought we would be able to order from the full menu at the back bar, but it actually has a limited food menu. Then, the door to the bar has a sign saying you can't take food and drinks back and forth between the front chicken shop and back bar, which gave us pause. The happy hour menu mentions a discount on "sanguiches" but the main drinks/food menu doesn't use this term. The staff is super friendly and helpful, and the restaurant was clean. The only reason I'm giving 4-stars rather than 5 is because the bartender in the whiskey bar was terrifically rude. He demanded payment before we received our drinks and said it was last call. However, he was serving guests that came in after us. His demeanor was condescending and extremely unwelcoming. Mind you, this was the first drink all day and I wasn't drunk. Cut the whiskey bar out or 'better yet' get rid of the rude arse bartender. I'll be happy to give a 5-star rating. Absolutely incredible! Well located along 14th Street NW, this Latin inspired quick serve offers exceptionally fresh, tasty dishes. I ordered the Inti (vegetarian) sandwich, and it may be the best sandwich I've ever had. Rich cherry tomatoes mixed with a robust feta cheese. Add a side of fresh, crunchy yuca fries for a treat. The sauce is boss! I loved the picante sauce on my Inti sandwich and used the Amarillo sauce to add a bit more zest to the yuca fries. I was pleasantly surprised to find the delicious Brazilian favorite soft drink, Guarana on offer. The ambiance is very positive and pleasant and the restaurant exceptionally clean. A special shout out to Karita (sp?) who made my experience all the richer. She was kind and patient as I navigated the menu and asked questions. Evidently this is the place to go for chicken and carnivorous options, but I can absolutely advise there is amazing fare for vegetarians as well.
