Jam Doung Style is SO good! We've ordered from two different locations and the food has been great at both. I'm obsessed with the macaroni and cheese and the oxtail omg Good mac & cheese is hard to find when it's not homemade, so I already know I'll be ordering this a lot. The portions are generous and everything we've tried has been so flavorful!

I can see why Jam Doung Style has been around for 25 years! This is the first Jamaican restaurant I've tried since moving to the DMV, and it just might be the only one I stick with. It has a vibrant and rustic Jamaican feel to it, with plenty of space to dine in and listen to music while you eat. The ladies working the front counters were amazing, even nice enough to let me use a phone charger. The portions and prices are reasonable. I ordered a medium oxtail which came with two sides (they had a rice and mac and cheese option for a couple of dollars extra) and cabbage. The oxtails were meaty and reminded me of what I would always order back in Jersey. The rice and cabbage were plentiful, but the mac really surprised me. It was super cheesy and moist. This gem will be seeing a lot more of me!

This place kicks out some bona fide Jamaican and American cooking. Their jerk is just how I like it. It's got the right balance of the bazillion ingredients that go into jerk, and also, it's been rested properly, making a deeply flavorful marinade rather than one which is overly peppery. There are 2 types of jerk chicken platters offered: dark meat and white meat, a nice option for customers. Their mac n' cheese is what really surprised me. It's top notch-- creamy, cheesy, crusty. It makes me want to call home and talk to mom. The cabbage side is very tasty and I'm certainly not a cooked cabbage person at all, so it's got to be exceptional for me to write that. For dessert, butter rum cake is right on the money and red velvet cake is scrumptious as well.

The MAC has zero cheese but the owner called me back and said this is how we make it, it has cheese.

They are sooo inconsistent I almost forgot why I stopped going here. I had not been in at least a year but we stopped coming because it was a hit or miss with your order. Most consistent thing was the rum cake which i forgot to order today.

It had years since I had last ordered from Jam Doung, so I was so happy to see they were still in business. Since my mom is Jamaican, I usually just stick to getting my fix from her kitchen or family and friends' that cook Jamaican food as well. But on Juneteenth, I was being extra intentional to support Black-owned businesses that I may not always frequent and Jam Doung was a great option! First, I was so impressed by their portions. I ordered the snapper entree which was brimming with fish, mac and rice and pea. All of the food was delicious, although the rice and pea was on the dry side. But there was so much food, I was able to stretch this one entree into two meals - dinner and lunch the day! I'm glad I ordered because I'll be sure to keep Jam Doung on the radar and not wait so long again before the next time that I support this business.

"Takoma Eats Location" Talk about DELICIOUS!!! My friend told me about a place in Takoma with various places to eat. I get there and notice Jam Doung Style on the kiosk menu. I've seen this place several times on North Capitol Street but never tried them. Today ended up being the day. I ordered the Jerk wings and mmmhmm mmmhmm mmmhmmm. They were finger licking good. They were extremely well seasoned. Hot and ready and slid off the bone. Some of the best Jerk wings I have ever had. My wife ordered the oxtail. Soft, tender and at a great price. I can't wait to try their brick and mortar location.

Good tasting, good portion for the price, daily specials. Wide variety available to order

sorrel wasted in the bag it came in

Ordered off of Uber Eats... it was terrible. Seriously. i always have heard great things about Jam Doung Style and wanted to try it out since my usual Jamaican spot, Negril, had closed. Nope. Nope. Nope. I ordered a beef patty, mac & cheese, a jerk hot dog and a sorrel. Firstly, the bag the sorrel came in had its juice spilled in the bag. Sorrel has a strong taste, but this one had a strong alcohol type taste to it. Very unbalanced in flavor. The first bite i took out of the beef patty was just breading and no meat filling. The jerk hot dog just tasted like a mildly spicy hot dog with not a hint of jerk flavor. The biggest disappointment was the mac & cheese. As soon as i opened the container, i could see it was DRY. i gave it the benefit of the doubt and tried it. it tasted just how it looked -- bland. Like boiled noodles with burnt cheese sporadically placed on top.

The service and food here were AMAZING. Curry goat, oxtail, jerk chicken, and cabbage was all 10/10. Portions were very generous. As a Jamaican, this place is legit. The lady taking orders was very sweet and everyone at the restaurant was so attentive and friendly. The cook was authentic and everything was cooked with love. This is my new go-to spot if I'm ever back in the DC area!

Was told that this is one of those native-to-DC must try places, I can tell they have been there often and they're family-owned. Upon our pick-up delivery its become apparent that since Jam Doung Style has offered take-out options online, its really swarmed the place to just pump out a lot of food, and with all this traction that is great and of course, well deserved for a long-standing brick and mortar restaurant who has not commercialized and has maintained reasonably affordable food to its locals and DC customers. However, with this comes the need for there to be a re-evaluation of the quality of food that is coming out of the restaurant. Granted we ordered dishes traditionally made with bone in proteins and ordered about 2.5 hours before closing, but our plates made their weight in bones. And with special order of gravy had fully been absorbed the rice rather than sitting and flavoring the meat. I imagine by the end of the night, all of the bones have broken down and reached the end of the pot, which is probably where we got our portions. However, the prospect of ordering curry and oxtail should always be exciting and celebratory! Why give a customer only bones? I would imagine this is a product of just having too many orders come in that you just have to get those deliverables out of the way, especially since now the in-person experience with Jam Doung Style is mostly occupied by takeout delivery services. That said, the flavors were so good and left us wanting more, and it was definitely worth a re-try, maybe towards the beginning of the day but that's good to know now. Coco bread was light and fluffy but smashed by the aluminum packaging at the bottom of our delivery bag. Plantains were perfectly fried with a gooey sweet bright golden interior. Rum cake was dense and saturated in rum flavor, also got a very small sliver.

Restaurant has been renovated in recent years to include more space and some indoor seating compared to the smaller carry-out only location it has been. Food: My husband and I have only ever ordered their jerk chicken platters. The 'small' portion is more than enough for us. I usually get the 'small' portion to include jerk chicken, cabbage, and rice and peas. My husband orders the same, but sometimes chooses to get mac&cheese instead of cabbage. It's always delicious; however, there has been a few times where one of us has found a bay leaf in our food. While it is easy to take them out, I believe it should be taken out before customers are given their order because they are not supposed to be eaten and could be a significant choking hazard for someone not paying attention while eating. They do offer some deserts as well, but I've never tried them. Service: Good yet could be improved to include another person at the front. Every time we've gone, there is usually an older Jamaican woman and I believe her granddaughter working at the front end of the restaurant taking orders via walk-in, phone, or bagging up orders for Uber Eats and the likes. During lunch time, it can take pretty much someone's entire lunch period to get a meal in hand. Value: Approx $10-$20 per meal. Great value for the amount of food, in my opinion. However, they charge an extra percentage (I believe 4%), to anyone paying with a card instead of cash. Personally, this makes the experience less pleasant for me because in 2024 many people do not carry cash, and why is it that high? Ambiance: Busy restaurant so expect the phone to keep ringing and a constant flow of customers. During our last trip in Sept 2024, R&B music was playing and the videos to the songs were playing on a tv. My husband and I dined in and ate at a small 2 person table downstairs. They now have upstairs seating, but it always seems to be closed off so I'm not sure if that's for large parties only or not. Location: Definitely not a fan of this part. 1724 North Capitol St NW, Washington, DC 20002; on one of the busiest corners of D.C. Finding parking in the area is often horrible. If you're not dining in, I highly suggest calling in your order or ordering online: (202) 483-2445 orderjamdoungstyle.com

I feel scammed. I ordered the Brown Stew Chicken, and while I understand bone-in chicken is standard, there was barely any meat. The cooking was inconsistent. I was fighting for my life with some of those pieces. Overall, it just wasn't a satisfying meal, and my craving for Jamaican food remains unfulfilled. Also, $7 for this tiny cake...nah. Rice, cabbage, and plantains were good.

I ended up parking pretty far from the restaurant I'd intended to go to, when I noticed a "2025 Michelin" sign in the window of this little place. Of course, I had to go in. Pretty sure this was my first time eating at a Michelin-star restaurant! We just don't have those up here (yet). The server brought me a menu (and a beer) and explained how everything worked. And while I was tempted to order one of everything, it was just lunch after all so I settled on their ahhhhmazing Oxtail Bowl. I subbed pelau for the coconut rice and wow...just this layer itself would have made an excellent meal and I would happily eat a bowl of just pelau! But of course I had to dive into the succulent, fall-off-the-bone oxtails, too. They had clearly been cooked in some kind of magical way, and were presented with a rich, sinfully good sauce and topped with house-pickled vegetables. My only regret is there wasn't enough space in my belly to order one of their appies or desserts! I guess this means I'll have to come back. Which is just what I'm planning to do on my trip to DC for another event in a few weeks. Hey, it's a tough job but somebody has to do it!

Our server took the time to explain dishes and confirmed our dietary preferences that we had listed and asked some follow-up questions. However, there were a few things that could have been better. We initially received the shrimp with the coco bread even though we had said a couple of times that we just wanted the bread. The crispy baby corn was brought out after the small and large shares, which was a bit bizarre as it is listed as a snack on the menu. Additionally, we had indicated on the menu that this event was a celebration; when we ordered the turmeric cheesecake, our server said that Dōgon had already gotten the order, which was odd as we had never indicated a specific dessert we wanted. We were charged for the cheesecake, which was fine as we intended to order it regardless, but it was strange as usually when I hear things like the statement above I would assume that a restaurant is providing it complimentary. The ambiance is upscale hotel vibe (where it's located); very nice ambiance with low lighting but nothing distinctive given the menu, heritage, and vision. My wife and I shared the following dishes: Crispy Baby Corn: Great crunch, heat, and flavor-an excellent way to start a meal. Tuna Guisado: The tuna was extremely fresh and tasty and the sauce had great flavor and heat. However, the olives were very briny and added too much salt to the dish and not bringing anything else, at times overwhelming the tuna flavor. Carrot Tigua: A delicious dish with many excellent components, if a bit on the salty side. The carrots were perfectly cooked, the peanut stew provided great creaminess and heat, the peanuts added good crunch, the onions and peppers added great acidity, and the mint on top gave the dish some freshness to tie everything together and balancing the richness of the peanut stew. BBQ Greens (vegan) with Cornbread: We ordered the BBQ greens vegan, which Dōgon can easily accommodate. The greens were cooked well and the garlic added nice flavor; if you are not vegetarian or vegan, I would order the greens with the beef bacon to add the fat and even more flavor. The cornbread was moist, albeit extremely sweet. Coco Bread: The coco bread was solid with a great butter to go with it, and nice and warm, pairs nicely with other dishes and sauces. King Trumpets: Delicious meaty and hearty mushrooms with tofu, cooked to perfection. The coconut dashi had fantastic umami and the right amount of salt, complementing the mushrooms and tofu very well. The black garlic added a rich and unique flavor, and the snap peas were also good. We shared the Turmeric Cheesecake for dessert, which was OK but nothing notable. I would recommend Dōgon for your next special occasion!

I thought maybe I had a bad batch but my friend had the same portion and complaint. Unfortunately no pic of that. 2: Honestly the plating is meant to be aesthetically pleasing but it was very hard to eat bone-in chicken out of a bowl on a saucer full of more bowls with a knife and fork. It was better when I took it to go and had a plate at home. Please reconsider this for the diners experience. 3. The doubles was my fave! It's a small app but very delicious and had a slight kick to it.

The staff are always friendly and make good conversation, and the drinks are always a good strength. Most recently, I tried one of the flavored margaritas and left very pleased! When I come here, I typically get the curry goat, which comes with rice, chickpeas, and potatoes. The most recent time I visited, the potatos were going to take a little longer to cook, so they offered me a choice between cabbage or greens instead. I went with the collard greens, and they were really good! They seemed to be cooked with a lot of butter, which was new for me when it comes to collard greens, but I still loved them overall. Bammy's is located in Navy Yard, so parking isn't always the easiest. But if you're able to snag a spot or you're already walking around the area, I definitely recommend stopping by!

**** First off - this is a review for Union Market location. ****…read more Expect straight island time and beyond when ordering from this location. It took almost 20 minutes for the food on a Thursday afternoon. I appreciated the self order kiosk but you'd with all hands on meals it wouldn't take as long. As for the food, it was a big miss unfortunately. The cabbage was mushy. Decent taste though. The peas in the rice were hard and undercooked. The jerk chicken was cooked nice and moist. However, they put a mango sauce on top which maybe its me, but that was not the play. The beef patty was the best part of the meal but was one of the flattesr patties I've ever had. I may try to go back and try something else since its super close but I'm not going to rush to do so.
