Two piece 2 pc Fish Meal - comes with two side sides
    Lydia V.

Had a busy day today and I was near the area and decided to pop into Long John Silver's. The parking lot was full of cars and sure enough. The inside of the restaurant and the drive-through were busy. I walked in and was able to order right away, which was very good considering I was in a hurry. The menu has options ranging from fried clams to shrimp and two types of fried fish, a white fish and cod, and they now offer chicken. I also noticed that they offer a grilled variety, but I did not take the time to look to see what kind of fish it was or if it included chicken. I ordered a two piece meal with two sides. The meal also included two hush puppies and I added a fountain drink. It took a few minutes to get my food, which was good, to me that means they don't have food just sitting around, waiting to be served. When I picked up my order, indeed it was fresh. My sides with this meal, were waffle fries and coleslaw. In terms of condiments, the restaurant offers malt vinegar, which is always a favorite of mine when I eat fish and chips. They also offered white tartar sauce, shrimp sauce, hot sauce, and ketchup. My fish was piping hot. I had to wait a minute to eat it and when I finally was able to, it was delicious. It was crunchy on the outside and moist on the inside. I was pleasantly surprised by the waffle fries. They were very tasty, I like them much better than Chick-fil-A's. They were seasoned just right and had the perfect fluffy texture. The coleslaw was amazing. It almost tasted like KFC's however what I liked about this coleslaw was that it was shredded cabbage instead of chopped cabbage...way to go long John Silver's! I normally don't like hush puppies but I decided to try one this time. It was so delicious, almost like I was eating a giant Funyuns! Yum! The restaurant was nice and tidy. There were a lot of tables and chairs and they were clean. The counter and drink area was also clean while I was eating. There was a worker going around, tidying up additional tables and picking up trays and wiping down the condiment counter and around the trash cans. That is always a good sign! From where I was sitting, it looked like the crew that was working at the restaurant just before 5 PM was running a pretty efficient shop. Naturally, I rang the bell to let them know that they did a great job. Enjoy!

Honestly this is a comfort food for me. I have been getting the same order for over 15 years... I'm not even kidding. I love love love the chicken with fried and coleslaw!!! The staff is always so welcoming and makes sure we are satisfied!

Uhhh... so it is affordable for 3.99 (basically $4) but one bite= a good portion is gone. Wish they had more servings. Not enough to make you full at all u less you need something light or a snack to keep it going thru the day. Friendly staffs. Food is affordable but for a very small servings :(

I'm biased when it comes to Long John Silvers because my tasty buds have memories of a long time ago. For that reason, they will always get an extra brownie point from me. When they are done right, you end up with a familiar satisfying, no-fishy-fish flavor that maybe you grew up digging on when you needed that simple fish and chips groove. If the captain needs a first mate on the ship and there is an opening because the previous one was caught eating more than their fair share of hush puppies and was forced to walk the plank, well then I'm his man because "ration, ration, ration people! And y'all, I'm gonna tell ya, hush puppies don't grow on trees, but from the uncharted island that is home to the Hushlilipuppian people and their leader and Long John's half-brother, Short Ned Silver. You know, I could write a book on the complicated relationship of these two brothers but let's get back to what counts and that's the golden crispy white flaky fish and the supporting fries and call it a day. As the new first mate, I will carry on the legacy of Long John Silver, Short Ned, and their long-lost cousin Slow Charlie Galvanized Steel. Order a two or three-piece fish dinner with a drink, pull up a seat, and enjoy while I spin a tall tale yarn that will have you imagining the expansive ocean with salt water in the breeze. Good staff, clean interior, lots of parking, friendly service. That's the Long John Silver way and don't forget your vinegar packet. Fried when you order so there's a short way.

When I was a kid, I used to think Long John Silver's was upscale for fast food. They served quality food with a smile, not to mention the best slice of pecan pie. Nowadays, it's comparable to Taco Bell. The customer service level has declined, and the quality of the food has become subpar. Today's visit reinforced just that. But, I still enjoy their fish and chips and don't want this establishment to close down. It's the last of it's kind in town, since the other locations had closed a few years ago. I just wish they didn't have to hurry their customers just because they have a line. When I tried to finish my order over the intercom, I was interrupted and rushed to finish. And then, when I finally got to the second window, they seemed annoyed that I asked for sauces. I understand that it's a Friday during Lent (and COVID), but if they want return customers, then maybe fix the 'tude just a tad.

Coconut Joe's is still a welcomed regular at any family gathering and a personal favorite of mine to this day. They've always had a strong burger. The huli huli burger n fries which is their pineapple burger is my favorite. For family style eating, their half pack and full packs are perfect. Their tri tip is good on its own, but with the corn, rice, and coleslaw mixed in with it is next level and the flavor always brings me back good times. The vibe inside is super fun. They fully embrace the surfer theme and have surf decorations wall to wall. Their televisions play classic surf trip movies which are fun to watch. Sometimes in the winter they will play snowboard and ski trip videos. Back in my youth, this was one of my favorite parts of the experience. I still love it, but don't get to dine in as often as I used to. They're great for take out, though I find the burger and fries are best enjoyed fresh in the restaurant.

The service was top notch, and the ambiance is over the top wonderful (as always). We had the tri-tip, bbq chicken, and then split a large plate of fish & chips. The fish was about half of what you would get at lengthwise for a similar price, but very delicious. The tri-tip was as good as I remember and waaaaaaaaay more flavorful than Harris BBQ (on Buena Vista). The bbq chicken was delicious, but the drumstick was the size of my index finger, so small compared with 11 years ago, but all chicken seems to be getting smaller and smaller at all restaurants. Overall, we are happy with the results, and it's nice to see that a restaurant that weathered COVID and all the price hikes is still making quality food. (We only took off one star for portion size as at $66 for lunch, there are many places that will fill us up...such as Lengthwise).

This time around, I decided to try out the fish sandwich and my daughter wanted the club sandwich. She absolutely loved her sandwich which is great because as I mentioned...super picky kid. Me on the other hand, not impressed at all with the fish sandwich. First impression was it did look super fresh. The lettuce looked crisp and fresh and the fish was poking out of the sandwich which means good portions. But the fish was a bit dark, suggesting either old or dirty grease or cooked too long? Either way it was bland. I ended up having to douse it with a mixture of tarter, malt vinegar, ketchup and Tabasco sauce. I feel as though since this is a fish restaurant that is from the coast, the fish should be their best dish. But this is twice now that it has failed to impress me.

We made a big mistake ordering peeled shrimps because the shrimps received were very small. Lesson learned, always keep the head-on for shrimps! They also skimped heavily on the sauce, which is a dealbreaker for Cajun food. The Works sauce has good flavor, but there wasn't nearly enough of it. Paying that much for so little is a bit frustrating. I've tried many different cajun seafood places and I don't think I'll be visiting here again.

When we made the reservation, no one told us that the restaurant operates as a self-service setup. We assumed, like most places that accept large reservations, that there would be some level of table service. Instead, the table was basically just a place for us to sit and eat. If we wanted drinks, we had to go up to the bar ourselves to order them. When it came time to eat, we had to leave the table again and go up to the front counter to place our food orders. No one came to the table to take orders, check on us, or even bring water. We ended up having to get water ourselves as well. What was most frustrating was at the end when I went to pay the bill and was told that an automatic 20% gratuity had been added because we were a large party. I completely understand adding gratuity when a staff is actively serving a large group taking orders, bringing drinks, refilling water, checking on the table, etc. But in this case there was essentially no service provided. Everything from ordering drinks, ordering food, and getting water was self-service. If the restaurant is going to run this way, that's fine but it should be clearly communicated when a large group makes a reservation, and automatic gratuity for "service" that didn't happen doesn't feel appropriate. We come to Bakersfield twice a year and after this experience, I don't think we will ever be back.
