I stumbled onto Hot Tender Wings the way most hidden gems get discovered these days -- through an Instagram page dedicated to spotting local Bakersfield spots. Honestly, if it wasn't for them, I probably never would've known this place existed. Hot Tender Wings doesn't seem to do much marketing, and it's tucked away on Union Avenue near Superior Grocery, so it's easy to drive right past it. But I'm glad I didn't. I went with the 8 Piece Tender/Wing Combo -- 4 Garlic Parmesan wings and 4 Lemon Pepper tenders -- which came with a can of soda, fries, and a dip. The menu also lists coleslaw and garlic toast, but those didn't make it into my bag, made me a little sad. I also grabbed the Mexican Burger, which caught my eye because there's a spot in LA that does a legit al pastor burger patty, and I thought this was the same concept. Took everything back to the office for lunch, and my wife and I went in. The Garlic Parmesan wings were seriously good -- well-seasoned, cooked through, and still crispy. The Lemon Pepper tenders were juicy with great seasoning, not dry like so many places serve them. That's honestly the bar most spots fail to clear -- wings and tenders are either fire or garbage, rarely in between -- and Hot Tender Wings cleared it with room to spare. The fries were standard but fresh and seasoned well, no complaints there. Now, about that Mexican Burger. When I unwrapped it, I realized it was built like a torta -- al pastor meat, beans, lettuce, tomatoes, the whole thing on a hamburger-style bun. Was I a little let down? Yeah, slightly. But was it good? Absolutely. It just wasn't what I pictured. If you're going there for wings, stay in your lane and get the wings -- they outshine the Mexican Burger by miles. I probably won't reorder it, but only because I'm at a wing spot next time, not because it was bad. Speaking of wings, their current flavor lineup is Original, BBQ, Garlic Parmesan, Lemon Pepper, Mango Habanero, Sweet Chili, Buffalo, and Nashville Hot -- solid, but pretty standard. What separates the good spots from the great ones is when they go beyond the basics and make it their own. Bakersfield Pizza Company does Taco wings and Strawberry Chili wings. Fire Wings leans into Asian-inspired flavors. Hot Tender Wings is already solid -- now imagine if they leaned into their surroundings and added Mexican/Hispanic-inspired flavors. Birria wings where they thicken the consomé into a toss sauce? An Elote-style wing dusted with cotija and chili lime? Yes, I'm putting this in writing. Yes, I'm a little obsessed. But that kind of creativity would make them standout in this city. Go check them out. The food is good, the price is right, and they're easy to get to. The Birria first, maybe the only place I've found that makes them better than me. Consume was perfect too. The tripa and asada were also amazing. The Birria pizza was huge, could feed 2-3 hungry men, and was amazing. I also got an order of wings to try them, possibly the best hot wings I've ever had. Tried the buffalo and lemon hot. Both were fantastic but the lemon hot stole the show. Luis was patient with my kids, exemplified model customer service, answered every question, and kept a smile the whole time. I asked if he was the owner because of his leveling professionalism and helpfulness. He mainly work here, but he's an excellent ambassador for the restaurant. The place is small, and unassuming, and the neighborhood may seem a little rough, but trust me when I say, it's 100% the best place around, take the chance and you won't regret it. Do not be intimidated to try new places to eat on Union Avenue. We all know that it is not the best part of town, however there are several restaurants that the real ones know are worth the trip. I do believe that Hot Tender wings will be successful because of the food. Their wings were delicious and the sauces can compete with any other wing place in town. The chef even gave us a taste of the other sauces and their boneless wings. They have sandwiches and various other Mexican cuisine. Take a chance and try this place. Finally I was able to try Hot tender wings and let me tell you, it did not disappoint! I was lucky it was not too busy. We were greeted by staff, was asked if this was our first time and was given a lot of recommendations from their menu. I got 6 pc wings, Classic single burger, garlic Parmesan fries and mozzarella sticks. Menu is also extended to tacos,burritos, tortas etc. The food came out so good and fresh, the wings were flavorful (buffalo) plus being a great size! The burger was soooo good just a nice classic flavorful burger. Their house sauce is so delicious! The garlic Parmesan was great as well as the mozzarella sticks. Not sure if it was the owner or 1 of the workers but we were also offer samples of 3 more flavors (sweet chili , mango habanero and Nashville hot) all flavors were really good Nashville hot was my favorite from the 3. The ambiance is great there is indoor and outdoor seating but limited, limited parking so be cautious. Overall the experience and the food deserves a 5 out of 5.
