Lockhorn is my favorite cider brewery, and it's so special to me to come back here every time I'm in my college town! It always has such a homey, neighborhood feel that makes it feel like a place you can just settle in and hang out. My favorite cider is the Chai, and whenever I'm in town, I have to stop by and get a growler to share with my friends. I also love switching it up and trying a different flight each time, while always coming back to my classics too. The games are so fun, the staff is always friendly, and it's just one of those places that feels like home. Definitely one of my favorite Bozeman spots! read more

Wow, what a surprise this stop was. I didn't think I would really like cider but they changed my mind. I tried a lot of samples and there weren't really any i didn't like. Stop 5 of 8 for Montana on our Hundreds of Hops self-guided US Hop Passport Brewery Tour Amazing Brewery Race was technically a lovely Cider House We haven't had good luck with ciders & are not very experienced with cider. We admittedly drove by twice before parking a goid ways away & walking around the block & up. The parking leaves much to be desired if you are looking for an open lot or close spot. We'd been in the car all day & were happy to get in a bit of a leg stretch, even parked a bit further than we needed to for that reason, as we had plenty of time at this stop. We went up to the counter & told the gal we were lost when it came to ciders & explained our wine preferences (dry) for reference. This seemed to work well & she was happy to pound out several samples for us to try before we committed. I chose the backyard blend, which, as the name implies, is a blend of several varieties from local backyards (how cool is that?) While Kel went with the flathead cherry which had cherries fermented with the apples, giving a nice vinegar-like-taste (in a good way, kind of like red cabbage, if I had to give a comparison) Anywho, we were VERY pleasantly surprised. And what seems to be the last of my Bozeman and Montana drinking establishment stops it appears that Lockhorn Cider House is the final one that I am due to write a review for. The cider that we had was fairly good but being from Washington state it's really difficult to compare cideries when they are out if the Wenatchee area but that is apple country and I need to take that into consideration when going to places that don't have those types of growing environments. But anyway onto the cider. The cider that I had and liked relatively well from this cidery was the Boar Sight Bittersweet. There are lots of bittersweet ciders I am noticing that this place puts out and perhaps I should have tried more than one of those for a compare and contrast demonstration for my tastebuds. But that didn't happen and that's okay. Flavor features that you can find with this cider are sweetness, apple and a clean and dry finish and aftertaste. It is a very smooth cider yet is refreshing to have. read more

So happy to find a cider house in Montana! We each tried the sampler/flight, and enjoyed all four of the selections. Each was quite dry, but very drinkable. My favorite was the variety with hops, which was surprising as I tend not to like beers that are very hoppy. Definitely try the flight, you might be surprised as well! Some of the upcoming seasonal rotations sounded really good to me (but I've forgotten what they were already). The decor is very northwest modern, with saws and other tools inlaid into the concrete floor. The wooden benches are a bit hard for me, but luckily I travel with a cushion at all times! We didn't try any of the food on this visit, but I'm sure we'll be back next time we're in Bozeman. The outdoor seating area was calling to me, but it was a bit drizzly. Next time! read more

We sat out on the patio with my parents and two kids. It was not busy but I am guessing that is because there is road maintenance on the street. The ciders were delicious and unique. We started with a taster of 4 different ciders. I am not a grapefruit fan, but the grapefruit mint cider was so good! After tasting we each ordered a pint, I got the sweet chili which was like nothing I have ever tasted and my husband got the grapefruit mint. We also tried the bison sausage, we cut it up and shared it between 4 people. We each got a few little bites. It was served with mustard, apple spread and goat cheese. They all paired very nicely with the meat. I don't care for sauerkraut, but theirs was tasty! I would go back in a heartbeat. read more

It's nice that Bozeman has a local cider house! They're open late too, later than brewery tasting rooms. Their ciders are decent - I've only tried the dryer ones as I'm not big on sweet cider (at least not a pint of it). We have been dying to check this place out for the longest time. We have stopped by several times in the past couple of weeks to find out that they were not open yet. However, we finally were able to get in this past Friday after work. The place itself looks great. The interior is nice, pleasant colors and decor. However, I think they can make better use of the space in terms of seating. 5PM on a Friday night, the place started to fill up and there was standing room only. The outside has a small seating area with an outdoor fireplace. The location isn't the greatest. There really is not any parking except for on the street and depending on what time you arrive, you may not be able to find any parking nearby. As for the ciders, I would recommend the sampler first. They were all fairly dry and there were 4 flavors on tap at the time. Traditional, Hops, Ginger and Black Currant. Our group seemed to enjoy the Black Currant the most as it seemed the most flavorful. read more

Two stars because I LOVED the atmosphere. The outdoor fireplace and the bench seats with a live bluegrassy band playing was wonderful. I even said out loud to my sister, "I want to hang out here, but I don't want to drink this." It's too bad. The cafeteria style sitting area, and stand in line for drinks & pay at the counter vibe didn't really bother me, casual is fine with me, but when I got my drink I was less than impressed. The ciders I tried were not flavorful by any means, they merely had a hint of apple. I tried the original and the hops. I was wanting for something a little more full bodied rather than slightly tasteless, watered-down seeming cider. Along with the blandness it just seemed to leave a terrible after taste and bitterness in the mouth. Sad to say, but what I thought was going to be a great new place to hit downtown for music and drinks is just a flop. Pump up the quality of the ciders and I'd consider coming back. read more

We were anxiously waiting for this place to open, glad to have them in Bozeman! I prefer a sweeter cider, so I was a little disappointed, but my husband loves it and it's a great place to go with friends. The atmosphere is fun and unique. Lots of local artwork displayed on the walls and a fire pit outside to enjoy weather permitting. The staff are friendly and do a great job. I am looking forward to trying their new cider that is supposed to be a bit sweeter, which is more what I'm used to and prefer! Good, dry cider is usually not only hard to find, but also fairly expensive. Well, at least in the Pacific Northwest, which is where I live. Lockhorn Cider House is that elusive beast that produces affordable, delicious, dry ciders. We wandered in here after a couple of beers at nearby Montana Ale Works, curious to sample the local cider. Since we came in an hour before closing, there were only a few other groups enjoying their drinks. Since there was reliable, free wi-fi, we even saw some students getting their work done over a glass of cider. How I wish I had a place like this near me when I was in college! My boyfriend and I each opted to get a cider flight, and thus managed to sample most of Lockhorn's offerings. Both flights and pints cost $6 apiece, which I consider very reasonable in the cider world. I thought the raspberry and hops ciders were the two standout offerings, with the ginger and dry apple ciders following closely behind. I was most disappointed by the bourbon reserve cider--it sounded so promising, but ended up tasting too funky to be enjoyable for me. Lockhorn also offers a completely gluten-free food menu that we didn't order anything from. It looked promising enough that I would not be opposed to sampling their fare on a future visit. We stayed in the cozy inside area this time (it was cold!), but the outdoor patio with a fire pit also looked very inviting. This is s fun little place I visited on a trip north when I was listening to a family friend play there. As one born in the southwest of England, I have a penchant for cider. Lockhorn did not disappoint. In particular, I liked that you could create your own flight. So many times, places that offer flights have them preselected and you end up with one or two you don't like. My favorite is the semi-sweet, although the bone dry is the house specialty. The owner/cider maker runs the shop, and is more than happy to help you make your decision. He's friendly, and polite. I'd definitely go there again. In fact, I wish he shipped the cider! read more

We stopped by Lockhorn today to check out the best of what Bozeman has to offer. We got the flight: Traditional, Currant, Ginger and Hops ciders for $2 a pop. Their ciders were pretty good, but lacked the crisp aftertaste that I usually look for in a cider. We also got some Tamari Almonds to munch on, which make a nice gluten-free snack for the gluten adverse. Overall though, with the chic and comfortable interior with chilled imbibement in hand on a sunny day, I couldn't envision a more perfect way to pass the afternoon. read more
