Local Roots - Homemade s'mores. An absolute fave! - New American Near Me - Powell, Ohio

Great patio and excellent wine. Love the food too! Kids get a special box full of toys to keep them happy...brilliant.

We shared the zucchini Fries, carnivore calzone, buffalo chicken dip and turkey bacon avocado sandwich and everything was great. Will definitely be back there. read more

SO FRESH. My greens and vegetables tasted like it was picked from a local farm that very day!!! Where I live, I pretty much have to subway over to Brooklyn to find great eats like this--and I have to pay double or triple the price. (God I the state of Ohio) My lunch mates ordered all kinds of things they allowed me to taste, and I thought it was excellent. So difficult to find fried green tomatoes where I live and they were as great as my faves in Nashville. There are SO MANY great places to eat in Columbus, OH (I think it's a secret foodie gem of a town). I live in NYC, so I take my pizza very, very seriously. The only other town that makes great pizza is Chicago, though. I have admitted that I also love Chi-town pizza, so Bill DeBlasio has just written a warrant for my arrest, but I have to be honest. I was pleasantly surprised by the spicy specialty pizza my friend ordered here. Very unique. I've never eaten anything quite like it. The chef here obviously knows what they are doing. My server (gosh I don't know why but I HATE that word-it sounds like servant-so I'm dating myself but I'll call her the waitress) was fun and flawless. (God I the people of Ohio) read more

This is the best place to hang with friends. The food and service is awesome. We are lucky to have it in Powell

The first time my husband and I came here we had some high expectations as it was our first date after our second child. We must have come on an off night because we did not have a good experience at all...since then we have been back a couple times to see our friends band play. I believe they are here on the second Wednesday of every month. (Great music by the way) I have been here with friends since then as well and now I am here on my Birthday. I am SO glad that our friend's Clint and Robin had us come back here to see Clint's band because this place is now one of our favorites!!!!!!! And I'm loving the food and drink selection! read more

While the avocado salsa was good, the chips that were served with them were stale. We asked for another set of chips and they were also stale. The service was slow and it was 45 minutes before we received our beers. The calzones were served with a sweet marina sauce, too much garlic was on the edge and the crust tasted stale. I was looking forward to eating here, but it did not hold up to its reputation. read more

I am disappointed with the customer service and will not be dining there again. Our order was incorrect and the manager still wanted to charge for the side not received. Later, a server brought a little bit of the side that wasn't equivalent to the full side we should have received, however we were charged the full cost. The manager was unconcerned when I called this to her attention. Response: I ordered the sweet potato fries as a healthier option for my daughter. When she did not receive them she ate the regular fries, which I was not happy about. It was longer than 30 seconds before the server brought out the sweet potato fries and my daughter was halfway finished with the original fries, which again was not my first choice for her. Also, the small plate of fries brought out was not equivalent to the side of sweet potato fries my son received with his order. This is why I thought we should not have been charged the $1.50. It was only a $1.50 and the mistake was on behalf of your staff. It seems like a trivial amount to lose a customer over. I ended up eating most of the sweet potato fries because I didn't receive my dinner. I ordered the appetizer as part of my dinner. If the server had taken a moment to clarify who the food was for, the order would not have been canceled. Also, our server switched midway through our experience, which added to the confusion. Our original server knew I was unable to order my original choice because the kitchen was unable to prepare pizza without using cornmeal and I ordered an appetizer instead. I ordered another appetizer as part of my meal. That appetizer didn't arrive until everyone else was finished and ready to go. I ended up canceling it when I realized everyone had finished their meals and I still had not received it. The manager did package the compensated appetizer to take to with me, however, I would have preferred to pay for and receive the item during the meal for which it was intended. I was so astounded by the manager's unwillingness to remove the $1.50 charge associated with the mis-prepared meal I left the appetizer at the table and did not want anything more to do with your restaurant. Yes, it was only $1.50, however, it was the principle of the issue. My daughter's order was not prepared correctly and she ended up eating food I did not order for her. I should not have been charged the side item fee. read more

My wife and I decided to give this place a try since we always pass by this restaurant going to work and had a coupon. My wife is a vegetarian, so I looked at the menu online and found only two vegetarian entrees. We decided to still go because we had the coupon and didn't want it to go to waste. When we got there, we had to wait 15-20 minutes for our server to come. We had to keep asking other servers to get him for us and finally after a while he came. I ordered the chicken buffalo sandwich and my wife ordered the squash pasta. I guess we were both misunderstood about that pasta dish because all it was, was shredded squash on a plate. How is a vegetarian supposed to eat that? We've been to many American restaurants and they can come up with better ideas for a vegetarian dish. My wife took one taste and said she was not going to eat it. She said it tasted disgusting and too sweet. We asked the waiter if we can get the black bean burger instead and he said that was fine. I am pretty sure their "homemade" black bean patty was not actually homemade. It tasted frozen and was falling apart. The buns tasted old and disgusting. My buffalo burger was not that great. It tasted completely average. I don't understand the prices at this place too. The price they have for each entrees is definitely not worth it....way too expensive! We will never come back here, even of they have another coupon out. read more

We have eaten here several times over the past few months and have been pleased with the food and service. We went here when they first opened and the food was good then the food changed and we stopped going. I think maybe they changed chefs or something. Their fish and chips are very good, salads are all good and the pork dish and haddock are excellent. The only complaint we have about this restaurant is their bread. They are just cold rolls in a basket. Sometimes they taste stale but the butter they serve with them is very good and deserves to be served with hot bread or hot rolls out of the oven. We also miss their pretzel bites! They were amazing and they took them off the menu. We like to frequent places in Powell that are not chain restaurants. The owners here seem to really work hard at making their restaurant good. The service is always excellent! read more

I'm a mother of two and a busy mom, but after eating here, I had to sign up and share my experience. I might be kind of nit-picky, but all the little things about my visit here just compounded into one horrible evening. It was a Friday night and my husband, my two children, and myself were at the candle store across the street and decided to head over for dinner. The parking lot looked busy, so we thought that was a good sign something good must be going on inside. The restaurant was packed, and I mean packed. People everywhere, and loud, very loud. We put our names on the waiting list and were told 30-40 minutes. That wasn't horrible for a Friday night, so we decided to wait. 55 minutes later we were finally taken to a table. It took the server about 10 minutes to finally come and get our drink/appetizer order, and another 10 to actually bring the drinks to us. It wasn't anything complicated either. Nothing from the bar. No joke, another 15 minutes went by before we got our appetizer. We got the fried calamari with a sweet chili dipping sauce. First of all, the calamari was so overdone it wasn't even funny, I was really surprised they even sent it out. I mean, it was REALLY dark. We tried to mask the burnt taste with the sauce only to discover that it was practically all oil. Really nasty. We were going to say something to our server, but the next time we saw her she had our dinners. So, after waiting about 45 minutes, everything finally was brought to the table. I ordered the salmon, my husband ordered the lobster mac & cheese, and my two kids had a kids burger with fruit, and fried chicken fingers with fruit also. Where to begin. The tiny piece of salmon that I had was literally in 3 pieces, it looked like someone pried it off the grill with a fork or something. The fish itself didn't taste bad, but the citrus fennel sauce that was all over it was WAY too sweet. It was like a dessert sauce on top of a piece of fish. The rice had cold spots throughout it, which made me think it was nuked :( My husband said his lobster mac & cheese had 3 small pieces of lobster in it, that's it. He said it was really good, but for the price, it should have had more meat. My daughter loved her burger and my son ate all of his chicken fingers, but thank god I looked at the fruit before either of them ate it. It was almost translucent and smelled like it was in the process of being fermented. Beyond disgusting. We really couldn't wait to get out of there and ate as fast as we could. We had waited SO long for everything, the place was so loud we almost had to shout to hear one another, and quite frankly, I was still kind of hungry. We got our check and took off to Jeni's across the street. I can tell you one thing, my family certainly isn't going to be headed back any time soon and I warn you that dining here is a tremendous waste of time and money. Head elsewhere! read more

Avoid at all costs! This place is horrible. I ordered the scallops benedictine, huge mistake. The scallops had absolutely zero sear and zero flavor. The "sauce" they came with was burnt and ridiculously thick. Not only was one scallop practically raw, but another was served to me falling apart. Not what I expected. My wife ordered the fillet which was ordered medium, but was served medium rare and completely without any seasoning whatsoever. The horrible food coupled with the horrible band equaled a horrible waste of money. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting something other than an uncomplicated sandwich (I'm assuming they can't screw those up). read more

I appreciate their philosophy and enjoy knowing that their offerings are locally sourced, but the food was average and service was very slow. The atmosphere was very loud with high ceilings and many small children crying and screaming. The outdoor dining area was beautiful and looked inviting we would like to try dining outdoors the next time. Maybe things were slow because it was a weekend. Might try again. read more

Can't get past their spaghetti squash. Every time I go, I want to try something different- but end up ordering their spaghetti squash. It is so delicious! Nice restaurant with s lot of good food choices! read more

Went to this place for the first time last night with my boyfriend and we will certainly be returning. We shared the zucchini fries as an appetizer and they were delicious, he got a calzone for dinner while I opted for the scallop & shrimp penne and by far it was one of the best pasta dishes I've ever had. Outside was a country band with a small bar. The staff was a little slow but after finding out our server was new that was to be expected. The atmosphere was great as well, a lot of craft beers available with great food. Reminds me a lot of Matt the Millers. read more

Food has gone downhill recently. Ordered the buffalo chicken sandwich, it took up about a quarter of the bun and was over cooked. Not a $9 sandwich to say the least. I hope they get their act together...soon. read more

This place continues to amaze me. The food is fantastic and they have the best happy hour in town. Their happy hour is 7 days a week and features 1/2 price Ohio beers! read more

My husband and I just ate here for the first time tonight with our almost one year old. It was the closest thing you can get to a perfect dining experience, and we're kind of self- proclaimed food/restaurant critics. First, they have a family friendly patio and a 21+ patio. They bring toys out for your kids to play with (which, honestly, was probably my favorite part and you'll understand why if you have ever eaten out with a one year old!). The menu was big enough to find something for anyone, but not so big that it's overwhelming. We started with beers and pretzel bites which were all great! The pretzels come with a cheese, bacon, green onion dip. My husband got fish and chips and I got the cod sandwich and we both got our fish "blackened" and grilled and it was perfect! I got a side salad and would highly recommend the maple balsamic dressing. Our waitress was friendly, happy, helpful. I love that the food is local and sustainably sourced! We'll definitely be back here for sure! read more

Decent food...wings are average....loaded chips were very good. Nothing fancy or special about the place....lots of flies which were annoying and made the visit unpleasant. Caters to the local area and specialized in Ohio grown products...which is cool. read more

Fantastic customer service! From the hostess, to our server Craig, to the manager Neil. Outstanding staff! The lemony, sweet butter and rolls were a perfect start to our meal, as well as the homemade chips. We'll definitely be back to test more menu options! Highly recommend! read more

Really wanted to say 3.5. Main dish and salads were good, sides were too salty, good beer selection. The building was really nice and location good, if you live in north Columbus. read more

The turkey bacon avocado sandwich was delicious and our server was friendly, courteous and attentive. Nice patio and live music, will definitely be going back for another visit! read more

Checked out Local Roots on a Friday night, and we were so pleased with our experience! There was a wait inside, so we sat on the patio. Even though it was a little cool outside, they had blankets available which was so thoughtful. We started with drinks; the beer selection is great with lots of Ohio brews to choose from, and I had the pear cucumber drink with habanero simple syrup. We also tried the pretzels which were fresh and a great start to the meal. I had the crab cake sandwich and my husband had one of the specials, buffalo mac and cheese, and we enjoyed it all. We love that they featured local ingredients. Will definitely be coming back! read more

Great ribs, nice cozy patio with fireplace

Ate there for the first time last night. Sat at the bar and the bartender was as nice and helpful as anyone I have ever encountered at a restaurant. Food was very good, atmosphere is nice and prices reasonable. Will go back for sure. read more

A bit overpriced, but for the quality of the food and superb customer service I'd say it's worth checking out. Gluten free menu is extensive, pizza is great! read more

Went back to give another try. Much better service and food was good as usual. I do recommend the pizza.

My boyfriend and I are fans! We have been there at least 6 times and have never been let down. Service is always beyond WONDERFUL! Food is very very good. I am picky so when I got the lobster mac & cheese I was let down, but that is the only meal I have not enjoyed. Burgers are good. Pizza is GREAT! Wonderful beer options. They enjoy serving locally grown fresh ingredients when possible, and you can tell when you enjoy their food. Only restaurant in downtown Powell I enjoy returning to :) read more

This is one of my favorite places to go. I am not a food connoisseur by any stretch, but I find the food very good. What separates it from many like restaurants is that it is great for kids, has very good live music and has a great beer selection with many Ohio and Michigan beers on tap. read more

My wife and I ate at Local Roots a couple months ago and were very pleased. Friendly, accommodating staff and delicious food. Wait time to be seated was normal for a weekend evening. Once we were seated someone immediately took our drink order. Food arrived hot and the pizza we had was top notch! We will definitely go back! read more

This restaurant was terrific in every way. The atmosphere was fun, the wait staff was attentive and efficient, there was a fine variety of food, most important- the food was fresh, well prepared, and well presented. We will definitely return the next time we are in the area. read more

I love Local Roots. They have an amazing salad... chopped up with turkey, avocado, and goodness! Highly highly recommend their house balsamic dressing with it. This is the reason I go to Local Roots. They also have amazing bread on sandwiches and all appetizers are great too! read more

Very good turkey bacon avocado sandwich, good horseradish coleslaw, red pepper soup bland, service so so, nice patio.

We stopped here after a day at the zoo. First the place looks fancier then is expected from outside, which was a pleasant surprise. My 8 and 9 year old got the kids penne and the chicken strips. I ordered the reubin and since happy hour is 2-7 daily we got a chicken quesadilla to share. The appetizer arrived very promptly and was served in a pleasant style rather then just placed on the plate. It was very good, nice and crisp with flavorful insides. Priced seemed high but for half price well worth it. My sons pasta was a very large portion! He is a good eater and couldn't finish it all. Te chicken strips were disappointing. Only 2 strips and not very big at that. Came with a side and drink for $6. My chips that came with my sandwich were either under cooked or over cooked. Not very much taste either. The ruebin was amazing! Plenty of beef with a great flavor. Just the right amount of slaw and dressing to compliment the meat without taking over. The bread was nice and crispy. Our waitress was friendly and kept us in refills. I will definately be back here next time I come through. read more

Great food, great service, great live music. Dave Smith Band, so talented. Highly recommend!

This is a great place to eat. I had the new age fish and chips and it tasted great. It was a good place to take my whole family. My sons enjoyed the gender specific toy boxes they brought out for each of them to keep them busy while we waited. We will definitely be back. read more
