It's always so lovely to be taken to dinner by friends, and also a bit tricky when they suggest a place that is not your favorite from past experience. I wanted so much to have a DIFFERENT and BETTER experience here, so I said yes to the suggestion, but unfortunately no - it was not better, not at all. Now I know that it's absolutely NOT the restaurant for me. First unfortunate moment occurred when I mentioned that I needed my food not to be spicy. That's just not easy to do here. I had gone with my order in mind, and was looking forward to eating chicken Parmesan, but was told by our server that it would not work for me - that it has red pepper flakes and could not be made without them. Well, there she was, taking the order, and I didn't want to take much more time looking everything over again. And I applaud her for telling me that - but what happened next negated that. On the board was a special eggplant parmesan. It's a dish that I usually love. I made a point of asking the server whether THAT would work for me, i.e. whether it would NOT be spicy, and she assured me that it wouldn't be. Well, NOT THE CASE. I didn't get a great feeling from that server anyway. I don't know whether she did it on purpose or not, but it tasted like they'd poured an entire bottle of chili flakes on my dish. I could barely get it down. And there was another special on the menu that I could have easily eaten, had that server suggested it to me, due to my request. But no - she didn't, so while I had the SPICY eggplant parmesan, my friend had that special, and it had no spice to it whatsoever. And when ordering, I'd asked whether I could have perhaps a chicken breast with my eggplant as I wanted some protein, and that was also a hard NO. Thankfully, these sweet and generous friends ordered up a veritable feast for all of us, so I had enough to eat, but seriously - it was like being in Mexico and you ask for something to be mild so they pile on the spice (it's happened to me and many others - Im not making it up - it's the gringo experience) - that was the experience here. I did like the Italian Burrata & Spring Vegetables, admittedly, and the dessert, but again, even the English Peas were doused in spice and later, I was also not thrilled when I wanted some coffee and couldn't even get the word "decaf" out of my mouth before the server said NO emphatically. I've eaten at Little Dom's for dinner several times and have always enjoyed it. Love the dinner options. The vibe is good. More NY than L.A. which I like. The service has always been good and breakfast today was no different. The breakfast menu options are nice. Something for everyone. The cruller donut was a standout for me. It was fresh and delicious and not too greasy. The polenta dish was fair. I added salt and ordered a side a toast to go with it. A regular order only comes with one egg but I ordered an extra egg on top. The vibe is casual but fun and cozy for dinner or breakfast. It was a rainy morning so it was an especially comforting experience to be in the warm, woody decor that is Little Dom's. Since they close after lunch, our server let us hang out at our table for over 2 hours to chat over tea and coffee. He was very accommodating and our food came out quickly and pipping hot! To start, we split the rice balls appetizer, which were perfectly fried on the outside, yet warm and sticky on the inside with cheese and plump rice. It paired really well with the marinara sauce on the side and I appreciated the extra bit of Parmesan and fresh herbs on top to make the dish more visually appealing. For my main course, I ordered the calabrese fried chicken sandwich and absolutely loved it! The toasted brioche bun was buttery, soft and slightly sweet. The chicken was very well seasoned, battered and fried, and well complimented by the acidity from the pickles tomatoes and heat from the aioli. The side salad was a great palate cleanser between bites too. Had to wait a little bit for a table but got seated right at the time we booked. The interior was made up of booths and tables. Felt like we were in New York or someplace not LA. The website said we might see a celebrity or two, and we actually did the minute we were seated. That night they had a special menu of Mardi Gras eats and that is what we stuck to ordering. We ordered the roast beef Po-Boy, bbq oysters, gumbo and Crawfish Monica along with Primm Cup and other drinks. Our waitress was super nice from start to finish. She even brought out an order of jambalaya balls (the only item on the special menu we didn't order) on the house, so we could try those. Everything, including my Primm Cup was really good! I'm not sure what their regular food is like but their Mardi Gras food was delicious! Served sampler size, the portions were just perfect for the 3 of us to share .We got to try everything and the best, we still had room for dessert. We ordered the King Cake and the beignets with raspberry sauce. Both were outstanding and my kid pulled the plastic baby out of the King Cake! The pizza was paper thin and the sauce wasn't very flavorful. The chicken Parm the sauce tasted like jar Ragu sauce. The side of pasta with garlic and butter was the highlight of the meal. The vibe is neighborhood friendly, and the staff will greet you with a warm smile. Bartender Veronica was fantastic and engaging. They had a specialty cocktail with proceeds going to benefit Cal-Fire. It was called Station 35 and was comprised of Gin, Lime Cordial, & Pomegranate juice. My companions requested it with Tequila instead of Gin and Veronica happily obliged. I had a sip and it was very tasty. The LD Cosmo caught my eye. The combination of house-infused Lemon Vodka, Mandarin Napoleon Liqueur, Cranberry Cordial, & Lime took this Cosmopolitan to the next level. It was delicious. We didn't order any food but the aromas coming out of the kitchen smelled so good. Some friends invited me to try out Little Dom's on the east side and it was such a delight to try this local gem. Located in Los Feliz, Little Dom's is the neighborhood institution. Upon walking in you can definitely feel the classic Italian restaurant vibes and the tables were filled with people on dates all the way to large parties like ours, with kids an adult alike. We ordered a few of their classic dishes, and the highlights for me were there an archini and spaghetti and meatballs. The portions were generous, the wait stuff were super kind and welcoming, and this is definitely a kid friendly location. They had something on the menu for everyone. I also have to say that they're tiramisu was 10 out of 10, I could have eaten three more servings. I quite liked it, something like what I imagine an Italian grandma in the foothills of the Alps might whip up. - Grilled Toast with Nutella and Jam: hearty slices of toast, jam is homemade raspberry. We had such a fun brunch at Lil Dona on a beautiful Sunday morning. We got lucky with a table outside and our server was both friendly and helpful when we had to choose among so many tasty options. Based on her recommendations we ordered the blueberry ricotta pancakes to share at the table, and they did not disappoint! We had a fun time before our drive to North Hollywood for a play. The place opened at 5 PM, and you MUST have a reservation. We got a great table sitting in a semi circular booth in the middle of their small dining room. The restaurant reminded me of a "retro train car" with lots of photos on the walls of old celebrities, and old fashioned chairs and tables. We ordered plenty of food, but I forgot to take photos of the 4 desserts we ordered. How we wished they had lasanga (ONLY made on Friday's for their special that night) and their chicken parmesean is served without pasta or vegetables. Instead they charge a ridiculous $11-$13, side of pasta, asparagus, sauteed spinach, etc. when every other restaurant I've ever been to includes it. Very Disappointing! (If you wanted to add sides of veggies & pasta that dish becomes very expensive and makes no sense). Our server finally showed up about 14 mins to our table as introductions.
